As a teacher at Columbia I can say that classes are in hybrid format until the end of semester, not cancelled. Most of the antisemitic chants you see online are coming from people unaffiliated with Columbia (outside of campus).

It is sad when this country cares more about these student protest (which have historically been on the right side of history) then at the actual crisis in Gaza.

In this discussion of UNRWA, everybody keeps leaving out the essential point: Israel always wanted the removal of UNRWA because as long as they are there, the Palestinians remain as refugees in an occupied land. Prior to the current government of Netanyahu, there were no plans to settle Gaza. The disengagement of Gaza was considered a settled matter in Israel. The West Bank, however, is another story.

I’d like to offer some brazilian lawyer perspective: - first, about the number of cases in the Supreme Court. they’re both a constitutional court, and the last court anyone may appeal to, meaning they’ll issue generation defining rulings about how we read our constitution, and also decide if a dude named Pedro should stay in prison for stealing a bag of rice. besides, there’s no such thing as supreme courts in every state, since as a federation, we’ve always strived for uniformity in important matters - as for judge Moraes. yes, he makes individual decisions, however, those aren’t the final ones in this particular case, and his ruling will be submitted to the court when they’re ready to vote. I do think he is stepping out of line, but that is due to a whole other problem: congress’ refusal to legislate. in Brazil, the powers have been struggling with each other for some years, and president Lula’s election has not changed that. Congress doesn’t wish to do something they perceive as unpopular, and the Supreme court has frequently been called to decide something anyways, so they do it with no clear law on the matter. Congress complains that the Court is invading their power, population gets mad, Congress continues to not do a thing, cycle goes on. this is performative and bad for the country, especially since attention and blame rarely is placed on Congress (unfortunately) - lastly, brazilian law has no view of any rights, even of expression, as absolute. our constitution protects this freedom, and then adds that anonymity is forbidden, something hard to maintain in the face of social media. what Moraes believes in is the power of democracy to protect itself against actors in bad faith, and while I think that’s correct, I also think that the danger is the fact that, for almost two years now, he’s been the main one to decide what *bad faith* even is, and that can’t stand

I'm kind of confused as to why these campus protests are getting such news coverage. I get reporting it a few times, but is what's going on on ivy league campuses actually a public interest issue? How many people are actually affected/interested in it? And I say this as a college professor (at a non-ivy league university).
Yes it’s true that protesters have been harassing Jewish students and saying antisemitic things - and it hurts the movement so groups have spoken out about it. But students don’t have the power that Paul Gosar has, who suggested a Palestinian American is responsible for the attacks on Gaza, and there is no moral panic about that. Ilhan Omar nailed it when she said this moral panic is about anti war protesters and the footage from Columbia during the Vietnam War bears that out.
Guys you missed the latest royal development. Lady Colin Campbell who was one of the first to write about Diana has updated her Meghan and Harry book. Let's just say if the King is your head of state. You would have a legitimate right to question if a surrogate was used for Harry's children, which is suspected by many. As UK law only recognises the birth mother in surrogacy. Normally wouldn't care about a private matter. But when your whole claim to be special is because of your birth right. In this discussion of UNRWA, everybody keeps leaving out the essential point: Israel always wanted the removal of UNRWA because as long as they are there, the Palestinians remain as refugees in an occupied land. It is so obvious that Israel is using the war to achieve the extermination of UNRWA to complete the settlement plans for GAZA and the West Bank; a critical step in completing the ethnic cleansing. Ben, you know this. Please say this and repeat it.
Prior to the current government of Netanyahu, there were no plans to settle Gaza. The disengagement of Gaza was considered a settled matter in Israel. The West Bank, however, is another story.
Is there concrete evidence you can point to, to support this theory of yours? I am under the impression that neither Israel, nor Egypt, actually wants to lay claim to Gaza. I'm under the impression that Israel is pretty happy to just continue things in Gaza as an occupation indefinitely.
I'm open to changing that opinion, but I'd need to see some evidence to support your claim.
The West Bank is a different story, though. They do seem to want to lay claim to that.

2) Simon Rosenberg said that the numbers of anti-genocide campus protestors is minuscule compared to the anti-Vietnam protests. Would you agree- that even when the latter started it was much larger? How does the present-day protest movement compare to the anti-apartheid Divest Now movement of the 90s?

Further, Israel wasn't created by colonization. Those people were migrants, fleeing oppression in Europe (see WW2 and Holocaust). Yes, there was a Zionist movement involved but at its core it was a mass of people fleeing danger.

I’d like to offer some brazilian lawyer perspective:
- first, about the number of cases in the Supreme Court. they’re both a constitutional court, and the last court anyone may appeal to, meaning they’ll issue generation defining rulings about how we read our constitution, and also decide if a dude named Pedro should stay in prison for stealing a bag of rice. besides, there’s no such thing as supreme courts in every state, since as a federation, we’ve always strived for uniformity in important matters
- as for judge Moraes. yes, he makes individual decisions, however, those aren’t the final ones in this particular case, and his ruling will be submitted to the court when they’re ready to vote. I do think he is stepping out of line, but that is due to a whole other problem: congress’ refusal to legislate. in Brazil, the powers have been struggling with each other for some years, and president Lula’s election has not changed that. Congress doesn’t wish to do something they perceive as unpopular, and the Supreme court has frequently been called to decide something anyways, so they do it with no clear law on the matter. Congress complains that the Court is invading their power, population gets mad, Congress continues to not do a thing, cycle goes on. this is performative and bad for the country, especially since attention and blame rarely is placed on Congress (unfortunately)
- lastly, brazilian law has no view of any rights, even of expression, as absolute. our constitution protects this freedom, and then adds that anonymity is forbidden, something hard to maintain in the face of social media. what Moraes believes in is the power of democracy to protect itself against actors in bad faith, and while I think that’s correct, I also think that the danger is the fact that, for almost two years now, he’s been the main one to decide what *bad faith* even is, and that can’t stand

It isn't unusual for the elderly to blurt out a skewed idea that firmly implanted itself in their mind back in their youth after some shocking event. That's probably all the cannibalism thing is. Although, considering he's the US President, that's bad enough.
However, what if is were something more sinister? What if PNG has something the US wants? I would have thought the US could just buy anything they wanted but it's never averse to forcing down the price. What if PNG doesn't want to be one of the hosts of Americas's next war, the one against China? Because those wars never work out well for the host country. Already Americans are dutifully writing about PNG cannibalism. It doesn't take much to dehumanize any foreign peoples just enough in American eyes.

These are genuine questions: Can one separate the country of Israel from the actual religion of Judaism ? Can you be supportive of Jewish people but not supportive of the Israeli state? Is Israel so entangled with the religion of Judaism that to be against the state is to be against the faith ?

In fact the most long standing group of antizionists are the most religious orthodox jews, who see it as heretical for Israel to be established without the coming of the messiah. The “Israel” of judaism is a people, not a state. it was a way to understand the shared bonds of jews who were displaced and suppressed for millennia, whether they were in Jerusalem, Kiev, Madrid, Tehran, or Addis Ababa.
The idea that the state of Israel is the representative of all Jewish people has always been antisemitic. By numbers the most common type of Zionist is not Jewish. Most zionists are christian fundamentalists who see the existence of Israel as a necessary precondition for the second coming. Historically the most powerful type of zionist was the european antisemite who saw Israel as a convenient place to deport Jews to. The British favored Jewish Zionists for this reason, they wanted to get rid of the Jews in London and also weaken the former Ottoman territories.
So, yes. you can support Jewish people and not support the state of Israel. Doing so you would be standing with the majority of young american jews and against racist christian fundamentalists

I'm kind of confused as to why these campus protests are getting such news coverage. I get reporting it a few times, but is what's going on on ivy league campuses actually a public interest issue? How many people are actually affected/interested in it? And I say this as a college professor (at a non-ivy league university).
Because those that attend Ivy league schools tend to be employed in decision making establishment roles. Their recruitment source.

Yes it’s true that protesters have been harassing Jewish students and saying antisemitic things - and it hurts the movement so groups have spoken out about it. But students don’t have the power that Paul Gosar has, who suggested a Palestinian American is responsible for the attacks on Gaza, and there is no moral panic about that. Ilhan Omar nailed it when she said this moral panic is about anti war protesters and the footage from Columbia during the Vietnam War bears that out.
Guys you missed the latest royal development. Lady Colin Campbell who was one of the first to write about Diana has updated her Meghan and Harry book. Let's just say if the King is your head of state. You would have a legitimate right to question if a surrogate was used for Harry's children, which is suspected by many. As UK law only recognises the birth mother in surrogacy. Normally wouldn't care about a private matter. But when your whole claim to be special is because of your birth right. And your name is added to the line of succession. Then these persistent surrogacy claims need to be properly addressed by them.
