I do these as well. I use the red yams or sweet potatoes....whichever is cheaper. They make cheap and very nutritious treat for Mike, Chili, Snickers, Anastasia, Alexei and Marya
I just ordered my first dehydrator. I got the Cabela's 6 tray 800 watt dehydrator. I found it was on sale through bass pro shops, just like you said. Cabela's was full price but Bass Pro had it on sale. Thanks 😊
This is excellent. We have an older handicapped dog and his diet is all organic. (I cook for him). So this is an excellent special treat for him. Definitely trying in next few days. Thank you.
You're welcome. Don't be surprised if he doesn't like it, though...it's hit or miss with some dogs. Try it blanched if you didn't blanch it first before you give up.
@@ThePurposefulPantry He loves sweet potatoes, and have been purchasing store bought - organic. So, I am sure he, Sammy, will enjoy. thanks again. Will give an update when I do.
My dog LOVES these. I've done them for years. We call them doggie chips. He even follows me to the dehydrator now every time I use it. Does matter what is going on it, he thinks its his doggy chips. Lol
Merry Christmas to you, as well! I hope Sami loves them! If not, and some dogs don't, throw them back into your dehydrator to get them good and dry, and store them up for yourself for later! Rehydrate, mash, and make some sweet potato mash to top cottage pie or have as a side dish!
*Gasp* I need that glove! I have cut myself on my mandoline more than I care to admit.I bet our puppers would love these treats and I just happen to have some sweet potatoes. You know what that means...
Well, slice them a little more thinly and dehydrate in the same fashion, and you've got sweet potatoes you can put up for yourself! Rehydrate in hot water, mash and season as you normally would. Sweet potato mash as a side dish, or use it to top your favorite cottage pie recipe.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I was wondering whether you could do this. Sometimes sweet potatoes start rotting before I can use them. I should dehydrate some before this happens.
Yep - that's why my cutting glove is so important to me! I use it even if I'm using the mandoline guard, too. I doubt cats would like this (mine certainly wouldn't), because they are tough chews. But if you give it a tray, I'd love to know what yours think!
Its Coco 7 and Lilly 3,we call Sweet potatoes kumara and have 4 varieties. They only eat veggies a big variety, brown rice and fish that I cookedfor them, they like to eat raw veggies and fruit even pineapple, blueberries 😉 They Shih Tzu and poodle mix dogs but like our kids. We been Plantbased for the last 3 years I had colon problems and then they want to remove it but I am 68 and feel Fantastic. Loved your Video's and will try the uncooked Sweet potatoes 😊🐶🍠 Just done the dry mushroom powder and 1kg frozen veggies Fantastic, want to do the onions and leek today
our beagle, Bunny, loves sweet potatoes....I put them in her homemade dog food all the time. I just got my first dehydrator, but it doesn't have the mesh screens. I see people using plastic canvas to make liners. Not sure this is safe. Should I use parchment paper instead, until I can get the real liners? Thanks and God Bless
Rewatching this video again. I have some cute dog themed cookie cutters. I might use those for the treats and cook the scraps to make purée or powder. These will make great treats for my dog Rufus and the grandpups Ben Ben and Buckley.
@@ThePurposefulPantry after I got my mandolin, And got ready for the first try, I cut my hand pretty quickly. I bought a pair of the no cut gloves and never looked back. It’s an amazing tool.
Darcy I clean the vegies with the same thing. I thought people would think I was crazy if I told them. I had a lot of sweet potatoes so I dehydrated them for my dogs and they did not dry them long enough and they mildewed. Boo Hoo.
If you are that afraid of a kitchen utensil you should not be using it. That's just asking for a accident to happen. I also when washing vegetables add a bit of 30% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Only a little capful. I keep a dark spray bottle by the sink with water and peroxide in to wash all veggies. Works great on broccoli and cauliflower! It must be 30% FOOD GRADE hydrogen peroxide and must be handled with care in the undiluted form. You can get it on Amazon.

I have to share my sweet taters with my pups? Isn't 90% of my bed enough? LOL GREAT vid!! I'll be doing this over the holidays as a special treat.
AND your bacon. Don't they deserve it all!??!
This was perfect for the question I asked! Thanks a MILLION!!❤
I love this idea! Thank you for posting this video, my service dog loves sweet potatoes.
Great! Do you make your own? Does he prefer blanched or nonblanched?
😮 that's a sharp knife I just ordered my dehydration machine and I'm going to try as soon as I get it for my dog
my dog loves these, thank you!

Glad that you've also found success with them!
You are the first person I've heard recommend washing produce before peeling for the reasons you stated; I've always done this.
You bet! Safest thing to do!
In food service, it’s wash, peel, wash
So good my dogs love them

I love using the dehydrator but have not thought to do this for my fur baby. Thank you for sharing.
Hope he/she loves them!
Going to try these next week
Would love to know what you think!
There are 4 dogs in our family that I do Christmas for
This year it is sweet potato treats!!! Yea
Awesome!
Mack, Sapphire, Lucky, and Poo Poo thank you. I will definitely make them some treats.
I hope they love them, Karen! If not, look up at the replay I gave Peggy in how you can use them for yourself, instead.
Thank you!! Affordable tasty and nutritious for ScoutRoger! I did make him pupsickles for him this summer...these will be great for fall!!
Sounds great!
Can't wait to try these for my Sami-The World's Best Boston Terrier. Thank you and Merry Christmas

Our dogs are Bo Duke and Georgia Rose.
Yes, yes you do. I saw you do those apples without any protection :P
I am going to try this again and see if he will like them. But I will also use your suggestion of broth before dehydrating.
It was actually blanching - and not all dogs love them. If not...stock them up for yourself to rehydrate and make mashed sweet potatoes with!
So, when you said they needed a little more to dry. Did you just leave them sitting out or put back in the dehydrater?
Back in the dehydrator. If you just leave them sitting out, they'll absorb the humidity in the room.
Very interesting. Didn't know about this. Currently no dogs in our family.

Just subscribed Prepper Potpourri sent me , looking forward to January!
Awesome, Carolyn, - glad to have you here!!
I use the same little green scrubbers from Dollar tree I cut mine in half so I get double the product for my money
Thank you for this great idea: just a suggestion, you might try a meat slicer I was watching a video where this lady used hers for all her vegetables.
If I had a place to store it I would.
hi yes that slicer is sharp have one I like it but like my fingers better lol anything for kittys like this?

I cooked my sweet potatoes first in micro oven cool it and then dry it in my ezidri dehydrator do this for the last 5 years
I will have to sneak and do this LOL I bet my chi's would love this.I know Little man will he wants to chew on everything
Our neighbor's dog scarfed down our samples :) I'm hoping Shelby loves them, too - but every dog is different.
I hope you try out these DIY Dog treats. They are SO easy to do. Do you have a dog? Let me know your pup's name in the comments below!

Hi Darcy, I tried to find dehydrating potatoes in your videos but can’t find one. What is the blanching time for potato slices?
Nope - I haven't recorded them, yet. Keep this chart handy: www.thepurposefulpantry.com/how-to-blanch-vegetables-for-dehydrating/
Could we bake the potatoes, slice, and then dehydrate?
Yes, but put them in the fridge overnight before slicing, it helps!
Do you have a tutorial with out a dehydrating machine
Just put it in an oven on the lowest temperature until dry.
@@ThePurposefulPantry thanks 😊

Plastic canvas are not "food safe" as per their makers. It's up to you to use them or not. Parchment will work just fine.
for longer storage should the sweet potato be crisp or can it bend a little?
Always crisp - bending means moisture.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I was afraid of that. I really appreciate your answers and your knowledge. Thank you.
Rewatching this video again. I have some cute dog themed cookie cutters. I might use those for the treats and cook the scraps to make purée or powder. These will make great treats for my dog Rufus and the grandpups Ben Ben and Buckley.
Is it only for dogs?
You won't want to eat it like a chip - they need to be blanched first to dry and store.
My dogs like Dehydrated berries
You should get a food processor to cut them up. Than you wont have to worry asbout cutting yourself and they will all be the perfect thickness.
Why? I'm perfectly fine with a mandoline. I don't want another big tool I'll rarely use in the kitchen. But thanks for the tip.
@@ThePurposefulPantry after I got my mandolin, And got ready for the first try, I cut my hand pretty quickly. I bought a pair of the no cut gloves and never looked back. It’s an amazing tool.
There is quite a learning curve to get things cut evenly with food processors. For me a mandolin is quicker and more intuitive.
Darcy I clean the vegies with the same thing. I thought people would think I was crazy if I told them. I had a lot of sweet potatoes so I dehydrated them for my dogs and they did not dry them long enough and they mildewed. Boo Hoo.
Sorry!! That's why the conditioning process is so important! I hope you'll give it another try!
