      Question? Is the turning of the airtight container for how many days? Then can you place into another airtight container afterwards if no issues? My new dehydrator is so post to show up tomorrow.

    It might be a good idea to warn people with dehydrators, such as the Casori or the various knockoffs, the manufacturers often suggest turning your machine off to give it a 30/60 min rest after long usage times. My manual suggests giving it a rest every 24 hours to ensure your machine has a longer life. Water distillers have a similar usage method. Even though most distillers have an automatic shutoff to prevent burning them out, they suggest NOT waiting until the entire tank is empty. The same goes for things like electric kettles. Don't let them run dry. And don't overwork your dehydrator without a short cool-off period.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Год назад +17

      Or better, yet, read their manuals because they all have different needs. My Excalibur doesn't need it at all, my small Cosori after 48 hours. Always read your manual.

    I made some gluten free gingerbread cookies for Xmas, and I added too much flour when I was rolling them. They were hard and dry. My mother in law suggested I put them in an air tight container with a slice of bread (GF bread) overnight. My the morning the bread was dry and the cookies were nicely softened 🎉

    I just started using a round Cabela's dehydrator, I got as a Christmas gift a few years ago, probably 10! I can't find silicone sheet that will fit, but found some mats, meant for dehydrators, that have holes in them. I tried making apple sauce, cinnamon fruit leather, and it "cooked" the pattern of the rubber mat into it. While removing it in pieces, and rolling pieces in wax paper, I laughed, because I thought that my 4 grandsons, under the age of 10, would have fun eating it, if I told them it was snake skin! It looked exactly like snake skin! And with the varied marks the cinnamon made, it made it look more real! Even my 2-year old granddaughter will like it, because she and her 5-year old brother come here a lot, and they love going to the basement to retrieve the 5-6-foot stuffed python snake that is down there, from one of our son's, and they bring it up to chase grandpa, and to bite grandma (I don't run much these days!😁)!! I thought it would make a great treat at a snake theme party.....and it happened by accident! Guess I'm back to cutting parchment paper!
    I've got frozen mixed fruit in right now! I did take time to divide the fruit to their own trays, and I sliced the bigger pieces thinner. I didn't cut them smaller, as some suggest. I just sliced them thinner, and will remove any trays, as they finish dehydrating. I'll let you know how they do. My fruit mix had pineapple, strawberries, mango and peaches.

    I just tried this last night, I flipped it about 6 hours into dehydrating which kept it from sticking to the parchment as it was still hydrated enough to peel off easily yet dry enough that it didn't stick to the parchment again after that. I think it dried faster too as the moisture was settling to the bottom.

    Have you ever blended fruit for leather, then because of lack of dehydrater room, frozen it into bags of liquid that should each fit on one tray when thawed?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Год назад +2

      No - but I'm sure you could - just watch for the excessive liquid release it may have and know that you may need to simmer it to thicken it up.

    I'm trying to make room in the freezer. I put 2 gallon size bags of my homegrown strawberries in the dehydrator yesterday. O BOY! I soaked a very large towel that I place near the "leakage". Good thing the motor is on top! 🤦‍♀️ I'm letting it continue to dry. I shifted the trays around. I doubt I'll be able to get the leather off the bottom but we'll see. I'm not given up! - newbie 🙋‍♀️

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Год назад

      Yes, sorry :( Some fruits do well from frozen, some do not. And it's always an 'if' but if they had a large water content going in, the freezing breaks those cells, so it all comes out in drying. You'll be able to clean it ♥ Hopefully you were able to savlage the strawberry bits!!

      @ThePurposefulPantry absolutely zero need to apologize! I made a big ol mess on the trays but they washed fairly easily. I do have a nice amount of powder now. 👍 It doesn't hydrate in a glass of cold milk like I'd hoped for. 😂 I will be trying to make a syrup on the stove top next. 🤞 I'm sure I'll make another mess with something else soon! 😊

      You don't need to put powder in for hours. Browning can be from too hot of heat on the powder (lower the heat), oxidation, etc.

      1) the dial is hard to understand for actual temps
      2) there is no timer
      3) plastic trays
      4) the single fan blows the dehydrated food around

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  11 месяцев назад +1

      1) You mean the area to turn to is too wide you don't know where to put it? (just put it at the beginning the way we do with Excalibur).
      2) You don't need a timer ;) Just run things until they are dry. The timer doesn't tell you things are done, it just shuts off the machine. And if the machine shuts off and it stays that way for a while and you have a humid environment, your food is then reabsorbing that moisture. If you see alot of my videos - I turn that timer up way more than it needs because I ignore it.
      3) Plastic trays are fine. Use mesh on the (which is plastic/silicone) even those of us with trays that are stainless use mesh because it helps keep things from sticking.
      4) Everyone has a single fan for the most part. Lightweight foods do tend to move, put a piece of mesh or parchment paper on top if it's a big issue. I have to do it with herbs/greens/green onions sometimes.
      Hope that helps? LOL
