He's definitely more effective than Beerus tbh especially since he did something interesting in this months recent chapter
I have a hunch we will see him in action in the next chapter. It would be a great way to end the year.
I agree. Whis feels more like what Beerus should be. He's like an antagonistic force that isn't necessarily a bad guy. He shows up and encourages the Z Fighters to grow and become stronger and participate in the events that transpire. And unlike Beerus we haven't seen him play his hand yet, so even though his bubbly personality comes off as really charming there's this underlying mystique that's makes him intersting solely for the reason that we don't know if he is a Villain or not.
Toriyama is known to write conveniences inside his stories. But Whis created something that's even more convenient than capsules: Miraculous childbirth.
@@zigmus00A whis has that bubbly happy side but I really want to see him serious
they still make it? i stopped watching after the main T O P was done
I still think Roshi was a good mentor for Goku
He fought him in the tournament not to change him , but to make sure he doesn’t change , to never stop improving
This can't be a controversial opinion, he is the best one by far, followed by Kami, King Kai and Whis in last place
If we include Meros, he is imo better than King Kai
In Gohan’s defense he was only FOUR years old.
When Goku was 4 he was already beating up Mountain Lions the size of a mini van.
@wantsuckle BUT need i remind you that gohan has the higher potential between the two?
@wantsuckle and yet according to multiple characters gohan has the ability to bc the strongest person in the universe that includes being stronger than beerus and whis.
@@Baron_Wurst goku was 11/12
@@Baron_Wurst okay but. Raditz could absolutely have annihilated them. And gohan literally left him breathless with a headbutt. Gohan was far stronger than goku was at his age. Just with none of the attitude and willingness to use it as the drawback

In all honesty he is fine I don’t see anything wrong with him. I love how calm and pragmatic he was and how he influenced the main cast. And in all honesty that is all he needs to do to play a part in the story
A jar of pickles I love whis, even when he can be wrong (like in goku black arc), he’s so calm and intelligent you’ll still think he’s right
I think the main point is that he doesn't affect the main cast, or at least not well. He's still an entertaining character regardless
@@dominickperez2952 well but this could be atributed to the shot sigthed nature of super arcs, the event of the story dint toke in consideration goku and vageta arcs, wis himself only showed problematic in the last arc when they used his caracther as just a tool to convenience
You're doing as the video said, judging him by his personality and not as his effectiveness as a mentor. I don't think this video really put the impact Goku's mentors had on him into view either.
@@gcDaydays None of his mentors taught him anything besides literal lessons in martial arts, mathematics, and Ki. The only mentor we know that changed his views and life was Grandpa Gohan, who only appears in the beginning of DB in flashbacks and once in the afterlife. Master Roshi taught Goku math and Japanese and how to fight but never taught him a life lesson or changed the "lie" he believed in. Same with Kami, except we don't really see that. None of his mentors really make him develop as a person. Though that doesn't mean they aren't important to Goku.
Whis being a mentor never crossed my mind honestly. I saw him as funny comic relief troll with funny voice acting, and cool yet playful demeanor. There’s something else about him I like but honestly? I can’t put my finger on it, he’s one of my favorite additions to DBZ.

Whis is more likeable than Beerus to be honest.
Heck yeah. If you were to have a conversation with one of the two, you'll find Whis much more easy to get along with.
I like Whis and Beerus equally, though I'd agree Whis is more interesting and would probably be better to get along with than Beerus.
Tbf I'm not sure a God of Destruction should be likable, sort of goes against his job description i would imagine, seems like more of a Kai's job haha
I get very much on why you say that because based on what we see he doesn't really do much unless beerus tell him to do something but wiese is very capable of doing what he has to do he is strong he took beerus down one neck chop

You're not kidding. It kinda starts to feel like Groundhog Day after a while.
I agree with you. But to be fair, he doesn't have much leeway if someone hasn't seen this series before.
You can argue he put some kind of link to the other videos but that still wouldn't stop him from mentioning it.
I mean, I get that dbz is very arch so Creating Character Arcs is a good foundational text for analysis, but his viewers know by now, he should just throw it in more casually with a footnote citing the source (like most more academic video essays on RUclips) in the corner or something instead of giving this simple concept the whole “source cited” song and dance each time.
Keenan McCarty it’s a Dragon Ball theory video, not an academic paper.

I'm going to agree with the others here saying he's more of an "Attendant" type of entity; yes, he CAN teach, mostly to those who are already above everyone else about things Mortals simply couldn't know about by themselves, but most of what he does is simply monitoring and watching.
You seem to forget that the Angels, while full of personality, are absolutely remorseless and lack any real morals other than doing what they think they should do at the time . . . which typically amounts to whatever seems amusing. They are not meant to do anything specific, nor do they have any clearly-defined rules or parameters. Zeno created them as Neutral all-encompassing forces simply meant to observe the Universes and give certain individuals in each of them the tools to use to either make the Universe better or worse without any real personal input on the part of the Angel's themselves.

Whenever a character of anime comes to discussion I usually talk about their power and skill never as what they usually are as a person in fiction like how TotallyNotMark explains...
Even in animes that don't have people with powers?
@@toddstone230 well not it exactly, most of my friends don't pay attention to other anime besides shounen and ghoul
Dragon ball franchise: *is an acceptable, fun entry level anime for people who are potentially not anime fans*
This guy: *im about to ruin this career's whole career*
dragonball franchise: is the best fictional work in the hall universe
Mark: *Talks about Whis(an angel)*
Also Mark: * Plays the theme of the soul-killing, mountain-destroying, demon-esque character known as Akuma(literally translates to Demon, or Devil, can't remember which).
Well that explains the thumbnail lol
Me personally, at this point I can't imagine Dragon Ball without Whis and Beerus, they are amazing characters.
This series is just slowly becoming why every DBS character is seriously flawed
Well, alot about DBS is flawed...
DBS: I don't feel nostalgic for it, therefore its flawed.
All of this guy's videos boil down to him complaining that Toriyama is trying to mix up the formula of Dragon Ball instead of adhering to the same rigid archetypes and themes we've seen a thousand times before in past series and other media. The irony is that a number of his complaints can be applied to number of DBZ characters he praises in other videos - but he is subconsciously willing to overlook that because of nostalgia.
What makes Dragon Ball unique is precisely Toriyama's willingness to try new things and turn existing tropes on their head. When you take that experimentation out and adhere solely to traditional ideas about story telling, you end up with mediocre works...like GT. Is DBS perfect? Nope. But when your polls consistently show that the characters you're complaining about are loved by the fanbase, that shows that something is going right.
The fact that Whis isn't a textbook example of what makes a "good" mentor like say, Kami, isn't a sign that he is flawed. In fact I'd bet dollars to pesos that in 10 years, people will think more highly of Whis than Kami precisely because Whis' is character is more complex than some generic mentor figure. That is what Totally Not Mark misses when he complains that Whis isn't delivering the "desired utility and optimal effect a mentor should have": Whis is supposed to be more than a generic mentor in DBS.
Whis plays a number of roles, perhaps most importantly serving as an embodiment of what makes the Angels and their motivations both mysterious and ominous. Whis' disinterested and generic training is not an oversight, its deliberate - it is supposed to distinguish him from Goku's past mentors and make us question what his motivations are and if he actually cares about the Saiyans. But rather than considering what role Whis plays **beyond** being a mentor, Totally Not Mark arbitrarily decides that the utility Toriyama is trying to get from the character solely to creator a mentor for the Saiyans thereby imaging "flaws" due to his own narrow focus.
Is Whis' execution perfect? Not by a long shot. Are all the stories he appears in masterpieces? No way. But to suggest he is "defective" when compared to characters like Kami, who was easily discarded and forgettable, is a laughable idea that only sits well with views because most of them grew up watching DBZ.
@@AdrianMartinez-bg5kl Or and hear me out. Just like with everything it has flaws. It just so happens it has a metric fuck ton of them.
@@AdrianMartinez-bg5kl Nah, it's just extremely flawed in general.
Yup cuz dbs is flawed. Gotta work with what you have right?
Beerus gets a 79% approval rating and that shows how divisive he is.
Whis gets a 79% approval rating and that shows how popular he is.
Hmm.
Probably because the same people like them. They are also a power couple. They would both be pretty beige without the other.I can't see someone liking one but not the other. I myself find them as dull as the other. Not bad character...just predictable and dull.
This actually was something I ruminated on some months ago. Whis seems like the kind of mentor that would actually help to develop and strengthen Goku both physically and mentally. Show him a new or better outlook at life while simultaneously giving him the kind of power needed to fight against new threats, all shown not through just a new form but a different fighting style.
And yet all we got was a Goku that stagnated and got worse over time and the scale of the fights he's in or how they're put together have not changed one bit from the level displayed in Z. It's even worse given that despite being granted divine powers, he is consistently humbled by people who don't have or even need those same powers, making Goku a lot smaller and weaker than most people usually try to perceive him. It's as if either Goku's learned nothing from him due to Whis' method of training or Goku is simply incapable of learning anything out of his comfort zone
You know, Whis had that potential. I too thought that... Needless to say, I am *very* disappointed.
The most powerful characters in dragonball are who love food the most I just realized that
Whis is a really fun character. How could anyone dislike him?
He could be fun in a superficial way but might not offer more to viewers. Don't watch Super but that would be my guess.

Vegeta's growth doesn't suddenly happen. There is a big deal put on Vegeta forcing himself to try and relax and getting pummeled for it during the tournament of power. He is forced to realize that it isn't just being relaxed but letting his emotional stress of catching Goku relax that will enable him to develop further. Vegeta takes the advice seriously and you see multiple times throughout the ToP arc where he is inteltionally following Whis's advice.
Whis is an enabler. I think he finds the situation they're in funny
All praise be to K. M. Weiland. Who without, we would be lost, unable to comprehend the mystical "Character Arc".

i actually liked Whis because he's a mentor with nothing at stake. In Z Roshi and King Kai are somewhat "vulnerable" so they are maybe more connected to Goku, but Whis offers a contrast: kind of like he supplies knowledge but no judgement

I like the shading you've added to the art of yourself in the video. Really stands out this time around.
0:57 its ironic how he's playing akuma's(a demon) theme for whis(a angel)
I think the problem is Whis feels like he has next to nothing to do with the plot or story. There’s no real rush in the story for Whis to train and it’s hard to figure what he wants or has to gain by training Goku or Vegeta. Roshi likes to teach, and there were reasons in story for Korin, Kami, King Kai, Elder Supreme Kai, all of them. Whis, as great as he is (my fav character in Super) is really just sort of there

Yo Mark, I'm early this time. Doing Whis and Beerus before my boy Tien? When's he getting his anatomy? Is he next?
Darkjonny79 and krillin
Darkjonny79 The hell does Tien’s character have worth mentioning? His character arc lasted the span of a few episodes. I doubt that’s enough for a whole video, especially with how simple it is

*If you love both Masakazu Morita and Ian Sinclair, you must hear what Arturo Castañeda sounds like.*
The guy is the best example of "ascended fanboy": He is the son of Adult Goku's VA, Mario Castañeda. He convinced his father as a kid to take that role, he was given the new episodes by dubbing director Gloria Rocha herself. And is a good VA too!
To me watching Whis give advices to Goku and Vegeta in DBS, is like Arturín explaining over and over again what his father and René García did to gain such followers.
Angel Mark, not angle, stop working so hard buddy get your rest
For Akuma's theme you have my respect.
its ok mark you can say Super is Mediocre, we won't get angry
Here come those that do, lol.
One thing I didn't like about Whis was the fact that Whis has always been pushing Goku to calm his mind completely even though he is a saiyan, and now all of a sudden he scolds Goku for trying to be like the Angles and find his own ultra instinct EVEN THOUGH THAT'S MOSTLY WHAT WHIS HAS BEEN TEACHING GOKU. But I feel like Whis didn't really understand and accept saiyan nature until the granola arc. And I'm perfectly fine with that. But I just wish we would see some development with Whis to show his realization on how he was wrong about Goku and Vegeta. But now that I think about it, it is beneficial to have two different mind sets, the mind set of an angel and a saiyan. And I'd like to point out a real good point Vegeta made about how he should remain relaxed and only have his power level raised when he is attacking so the opponent doesn't know what to expect and to conserve energy. That's why Vegeta meditated, to have a relaxed mindset. Jiren can do it instinctively while Vegeta is a Saiyan so it woukd be hard for him to master. But then again, in Ressurection of Frieza whis said that Goku needs to be less calm but then proceeds to switch up his attitude when he sees Goku use ultra instinct. So what I think Whis should teach is that to have different mindsets but not forget or let go of their original ones. Which is where true ultra instinct and Ultra ego plays a part.
11:30 That writer probably hates Doc Brown from Back to the Future.
The more i watch this series, the more i realize this series is amazing, but far from the best, and that most manga series today have taken lessons from the show, and improved on it 10 fold

In regards to Vegeta's decision to stop obsessing over Goku, one thing you may have missed - In Super, Vegeta adamantly refuses to go train with Goku at one point, or to even seek out fights, because he's waiting for the birth of his daughter. I think there are little hints like that throughout Super that Vegeta isn't just less obsessed with being better than Goku, but just with overall life balance in general. He's just mentally healthier.

siiigh. Dude. I loved the first few videos in this series but these last few and your rewrite of the Buu saga have really turned me off your content. It feels like you have fundamentally misunderstood Toriyama's writing style and what makes it so great. Specifically in this video you talk about how you love Whis' personality but you don't like how "his character doesn't serve a narrative purpose." My problem with that, and why I say you have misunderstood Toriyama's writing style is that Whis' personality IS his purpose. Dragon Ball is not a series where characters serve narrative but one where narrative serves characters, Dragon Ball isn't about the destination but the journey, it's not about the wish you make when you have all 7 but the adventure you went on to get them. And your comments that Goku and Vegeta's training under Whis doesn't actually lead anywhere for them is really less about Whis and more about the flaws of Super. Super refuses to advance and develop the core cast because it /can't/ develop them, because it has to still fit into a pre-determined ending (Goku flying away to train Uub) it can't make any changes that would alter that ending.

I think what Whis needs is some agency. Yes he's an attendant and mentor, yes he's powerful enough it's hard to even see growth if it does happen, but we've already seen a glimpse of personal goals. With both Vegeta and Goku, he tried to make them promise to be the next god of destruction before training them, but was bribed with food by vegeta and with goku....it just never came up again. In an odd twist I think the recent Broly movie could provide this. When Gogeta came back to the fight, Whis was seen practically dancing around Broly, but I have to imagine being face to face with someone stronger than both his students (individually) at the time would get his curiosity. Especially with Broly's rampaging state in mind. I'd love to see a scene somewhere of Whis going to Broly when he's calm, and offering to mentor him into the next deity. All in all, he's a perfect candidate. It could be a positive change arc with Broly learning to control his anger like Gohan, or even a negative change arc with a damaged man becoming a monster.
