Our Parents did not want us to become like him, Radical, Hemp smoking, Crazy head with all the Women around him, Always fighting the oppressive Governments when I was growing up. He went to my high school, I was soo close but soo far from him then. Now I wish I disobeyed my Parents for once when I was growing up. True Legend.

    Reliving my days as a young foreign PhD student in the early 70s at the University of Ibadan (UI). Just before the time of Fela's concert at UI there had been a student protest and the police had stormed the campus. Many students fled. Some challenged the police and threw home made bombs. The big day for the concert arrived. We took our seats early as we'd been told the place would be jam packed and that Fela, typically, did not arrive early. We sat for hours waiting. Then the bandsmen turned up and took their position on the stage. They spent an inordinate amount of time tuning their instruments. Everyone in the hall grew impatient and began to hurl insults at them. Some threw objects. Then hours later, Fela arrived. The minute he started to play, all was forgiven. We got up from our seats and started to dance. It was electric!! Right bang in the middle of the song the music stopped. We wondered what happened. The lights were still on. Then Fela looked around, from right to left and said "Look at you...foolish students. You see police you run. You see Fela you throw stone!". Before anyone could say a thing, he continued to sing and.. well.. .everyone returned to dancing.
    Such a gifted musician. RIP Fela.
    Those were the days of the oil boom. Nigeria rocked. We pray for the peace of that fascinating country.

    I just spent 2 hours listening to Seun and Femi Kuti and then landed here. I must say I got like a cold shower because the master, Fela, is still light years ahead!!! But Seun comes closest maybe thanks to the old timers in his band.

    • @albertanthony.5389
      @albertanthony.5389 5 лет назад +6

      This is because Seun retained FELA'S band "The Egypt 80", which Femi was a member of while their dad was still alive.

    • @LimKaamen
      @LimKaamen 5 лет назад +10

      @Albert Anthony, precisely! I'm aware of that. In fact I saw a video reporting on how Fela's band (in the presence of then 14-year-old Seun) almost decided to dissolve The Egypt 80. Then little boy Seun stood up to these older folks and said: no one day; I'm becoming the band leader (although he wasn't even skilled yet). Then in unison, the band elders took on to teach Seun all his dad's musical ways, from the start. That was certainly "a hell" of a decision!
