Often when you're about to do something you unlikely want to do, your head starts thinking endless possibilities and clouding your brain up : | making everything even heavier
Voluntary discomfort really builds your character and changes your life. I used to ride my bike to the top of the same mountain every morning at 5am. And yes, cold showers actually work. You can feel the effects of these discomforts pretty much immediately anywhere in your life like controlling your depression, social anxiety, insomnia, lack of focus, sexual desire,and... So to sum it up, do it guys
The first time I had heard my thoughts do not define me my mind was blown away. I know this fact for a year now but tend to forget that while in trouble
This is a great video. I do want to advise people to be cautious about ignoring too many of your body's suggestions - remember you aren't a robot and those suggestions are there for self preservation. It's about finding a balance.
I think it's important to understand that the mind's thoughts are themselves influenced by a variety of things. You will think different thoughts depending on your mood, how full your stomach is, weather or not you have alcohol in your system, and even the weather itself can influence what you think about. It's also relevant to consider the “color” of your thoughts, that is, the emotional background of the thought itself. An angry thought that is focused on being productive is slightly different to a happy thought that is focused on being productive. As you say, the mind is a suggestion box that is influenced by thousands of internal and external factors. The ability to take the suggestion box with a grain of salt and push on regardless can take you far in life. Good video, good stuff!
Funny I’ve practiced voluntary discomfort in uncomfortable social situations in the past simply because I wanted to see what made me so uncomfortable and if I could conquer it… never figured it out why I was uncomfortable but I’ve defiantly becomes more comfortable with my fear.
this is why i am depressed- i cant relate to others anymore because ive conditioned my mind through years of "suck it up", JUST DO IT, ignoring my thoughts. now my mind is blank all the time and I never feel anything. all because my mind would remind me that it would rather be doing something else while at the gym, at work, at school, but i did it all anyways. now i dont want to accomplish anything in life anymore- i have no goals, plans or passions. so in a way it worked.
@@WakingUpToday213 I have spent a substantial portion of my wealth on psychotherapy. I know for some people it helps to just be heard by another person, but I have expressed these sentiments to my friends and family and therapists for years and it hasn't really helped. I really only uncovered more issues within myself during therapy such as an underlying low self-worth, neediness and insecurity in interpersonal relationships. I'm still looking for new ways to try to work through this.
I am in the same state, seeing a therapist now. I pushed myself into doing what was best career wise. The result? Miserable. The message is confusing because he says you need to do what you don't want to do to acclomplish your goals and desires...things you do want! So what i did was forse myself towards goals i did not value....pure waste of energy. I am now searching for better ways to give me direction, i know i can do the work, i excersice 3-4 times a week because i value it as important and it gives me energy, i feel good afterwards! I even try to enjoy it! So..should you not do the things you want to do? I'm confused.
@@davek1728 To be honest, last year things started getting better for me! I stopped going to therapy and meditated and lifted weights a lot. Got a new girlfriend. Do the things you want to do and be kind to yourself. Understand what others want and need from you and put your own well-being first (maybe if you have children it's different, but I don't). Do things that align with your values and find ways to be accepted and accept yourself. I think I need to still grow a lot more, but at least I am feeling better now :)
Voluntary discomfort is a dangerous thing. I have a problem with procrastination, and doing voluntary discomfort was a good method at first, but I figured over time I was still procrastinating, but effectively making myself suffer in order to feel better about it. Make sure the discomfort is effectively a good thing. Fasting, as suggested in this video, is a really slippery slope. It may lead to you thinking that it's ok to not do X because in exchange you won't eat.
The video was mind blowing for me because I always perceived my thoughts as truth and that led me to living through my life as a passive lazy individual , almost a slave to my mind . I don't know how commuting to push through my thoughts will affect my life but I'll do it . It's time to take action indeed . Thank you very much , sir .
MistyHavenEu You may or may not see this but I feel the same way. Did doing all of these help you at all because I want to make a change too and become more productive.
A thing that changed me a lot as a person was jumping off the second story of the house. I had to increase my willpower a LOT to do that. It was one of the hardest mental challenges I have faced.
thank you so much for this precise message. I don't know if anybody else feel the same way, but I tend to be really motivated at times and sometimes I find myself with no energy to do anything, even getting out of bed has become a very difficult task. And this has been my cycle for my entire life and I don't know how to find a way to combat that, i should keep reminding myself that my thoughts are not my reality.
Seriously, if nothing else helps, all it takes are 3 seconds of shutting down whatever keeps you in bed, just roll yourself out of it, I never tried it, but I'd guess there is no going back there then. Build from there, discomfort is always just very temporary, never be UNconscious of that!
I definitely agree with this kind of thinking. In a distracted society like today, it is hard to stay focused and do things one does not want to do. The only thing about resistance training is your focus (which I intend to continue to do), is to not mistake resistance training for pushing yourself too far. However, if one is cognisant of when they actually are tired or not and when you simply don't FEEL like doing it, then resistance training is harmless and very beneficial to your health and wellbeing. I want to write up a challenge / plan to regain my focus. I already installed the app One-Sec. Other things I wish to do are to are: -try and read for longer periods of time without getting distracted or my mind wandering -more meditation (5 minutes a day even if it is just focusing on my breath with no guided anything) -journaling as often as I can to reroute my day and catch myself when I'm in a procrastination cycle -use social media healthily (know why and what you intend to do with the app BEFORE you open it) Any other suggestions?
Great way to tackle those things I don't look forward to doing. I find it helpful to do those things I don't want to as soon as I can, to avoid having them hanging around bothering me.
Thank you so much. I've listened to motivational videos before and even made notes but this one is probably the best. It is short but says everything that needs to be said. I took notes on almost everything that you said and plan to rewrite it and post it where I will see it. I am older and if I don't get it together, I will leave the planet as a failure. I will let you know how I do on this if you care to know. Please get back to me.
Planet X, thank you for your comment. I am older too, and I can definitely relate. I do not have much time left to achieve the success I have a burning desire for. I do not want to leave this life knowing that I lived below my potential.

@@devourerofnuggets - Exactly. Most people don’t understand common sense. And instead fully with all trust decide to believe what their parents taught them as children. 🤦🏻♂️
@@devourerofnuggets Ummmm, no. 1) Being cold does not strengthen immune response to rhinovirus (a cold). Studies indicate it does in fact lower it. As far as we can tell it lowers immune response in general too, but we've specifically tested it with rhinovirus and seen it lower immune response to it. 2) Sinuses are at a lower temperature than the rest of the body in general, which is why rhinovirus typically replicates there, because it doesn't replicate as well in higher temperatures, and being cold and letting your nose/sinuses get even colder absolutely allows it to replicated out of control (i.e. get you sick). 3) One of the body's response to being cold is to narrow blood vessels in the upper respiratory tract, which lessens what white blood cells can do to combat a replicating virus in those areas, again, allowing it to replicate out of control (i.e. get you sick). Saying "being cold gives you a cold" may be a severe simplification of what's going on...but it's not really a wrong one.
@@1BeGe Exposing yourself to the cold has been proven to increase white blood cells significantly, which strengthens your immune system, along with it increasing BAT (brown adipose tissue, brown fat) which causes your body to burn extra calories which can in turn burn off excess fat. An increased metabolic rate stimulates the immune response. It also reduces inflammation, swelling and sore muscles. Another 2014 study showed that immersion in cold water causes the body to release adrenaline. This has two effects: It makes your immune system produce more anti-inflammatory substances. It also lowers your inflammation response to infections. Both of these effects can help your body resist illness.
@@bobbys1308 Your body literally has those responses BECAUSE of how susceptible it is to illness when cold. That's it doing what it can to fortify against it. Instead of studies about whether one or two of the plethora of variables involved in immune response go up or down and then making sweeping large scale conclusions such as "these few things increased, it must mean it's stronger" try looking up actual end result studies: i.e. when people were exposed to X in various temperature conditions how often did the contract the illness? They nearly universally show that you catch stuff easier when you're cold. And this is literally EXTRA true for rhinovirus specifically because it is SPECIALLY adapted to replicate better when you get cold. That's LITERALLY its specific evolved characteristic. It lays mostly dormant until your sinuses are cooled and dried by cold weather, then replicates in those conditions. Anyone that thinks that being cold will make you more resistant to rhinovirus literally does not know anything about rhinovirus.
And it's real because every time i have to clean my room and i dont its starts getting harder to do it just once but when i do it consistently, it gets easier each times but if i stop for a bit its gets really hard again
I hate to sound like a stuck record recommending yoga; Holding poses through discomfort has made me so much better able to endure things like miserable airport settings without a hint of reactionary stress. That is another form of the discomfort training recommended in this video.
I'm confused, the video starts and ends with "things you want to accomplish" and "your goals"... so aren't these the things i do want??? I i wanted to be a doctor should i force myself to become an engineer? Do what you don't want to do??? I mean...i want to excersise, so i work out 3-4 times a week...do i always feel like it? No! I push myself, get started, i get that energy flowing and enjoy it, i feel better. But..i wanted it, i just had to do it! So...i'm confused...should i not persue what i want?
Instead of doing what I should be doing, I'm googling how to do things I don't want to do, and now I'm watching a RUclips video when I should be studying.
I find if I force myself to do something I don't want to do (like carry 30 lbs of groceries up 5 flights of stairs because the elevator is broken) I find out it was not so bad, and actually look forward to doing it again! Guitar players have to do this with exceedingly boring fingering excercises and scales. Computer programmers have to make a lot of mistakes to learn how to do it well. Men who want to go out with women have to ask them out and be prepared to be rejected. If you want to grow your business you have to do sales. Start with 10 phone calls a day. Then go to 20, etc.
I read somewhere that you shouldn't train your willpower with some random exercise. It's better to attack head on. If your hardship is reading, then you must train your willpower to read. This also forms the habit of not running away from the particular exercise.

I'm trying to practice voluntary discomfort not trying to get a cold buddy
Thats a suggestion of your brain buddy
Thank you, this was very helpful.
Watching this before I go for a run🏃🏼...
Would love a kid's version of this info to show my son.
Honestly, this really helped me focus on work
Interestingly, I made a video exactly like this! great job!
This is absolutely amazing, thank you.
wonderful tips! enjoyed the video a lot! thanks!
Thanks u. U truly deserved than a like. U solved my yearly dumb problems and help me out of self-destructed thoughts.
Thank you! I really need this
I stand up now and tidy my kitchen for 30min. Making my bed, too, it is a bit smelly.
Thanks.
Using this for school, wish me luck!

This is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you.
This make getting better so mush easier.
Absolutely love your channel.
Now that was 4.30 minutes well spent watching this. Great vid guys! Practical and actionable, keep it up:)
Great video. Helped me a lot. Thank you!! ♥️
Excellent. Great Work. Keep Walking!
Thank you so much!!
THANK YOUUU!!!!
I read somewhere that you shouldn't train your willpower with some random exercise. It's better to attack head on. If your hardship is reading, then you must train your willpower to read. This also forms the habit of not running away from the particular exercise.
Interesting 🤔
It's kinda like what this video is saying 🤭😆
