Quick Tip: Get More From Tamiya Extra Thin Cement

- Tamiya Extra Thin (TET) is a mainstay in the hobby, but one of the annoyances is the cap brush that can't seem to reach the dregs when the bottle starts to run low. Here's an insanely, headsmackingly simple tip to address that.
LOL! Your intro was hilarious - it was like you've been watching me at my modelling desk for the past two years making an idiot of myself attempting to deal with my dregs of Tamiya thin!!! Thanks a million for taking the time to pass on the tip!
This video couldn't have come at a better time as I just the other day purchased some Tamiya thin sement. Keep em comin, big thank you!!
I was aware of this with the brush. I just wanted to comment though to say if anyone has not used this product it is absolutely fantastic. The capillary action is amazing, a little goes a really long way.
Wow! And I've been using brushes, and losing brushes to using them to get the last remnants. I'm glad I saw this!
Wow, what a great bit of info. How did we miss that one? Is it because the bottle is plastered in Japanese?!
I feel like such an idiot! Brilliant, I had no idea! Thank you for this. This has always driven me nuts!
I have a kanban system on Tamiya Extra Thin. When I am down to one bottle, I order another. When the first reaches its end of life, I tip the dregs into the next bottle.
"Usefull little tip." No pun intended:)
My mind is blown..... Than you for posting this!!!
If you turn the cap upside down, you can temporarily cap the bottle with it to stop fumes, you can also mix your own from acetone and butyl acetate (model airplane dope thinner) to a 1:1 mix. Same thing.
Hidden treasure indeed. I usually use low bottles of Extra Thin and mix them with low bottles of Tamiya Orange - end up with a Tamiya Testors.
But, perhaps I'm dreaming this and have a secret desire to keep model companies happy, but I think cement works a little better new. I think this is certainly true with CA. If I do a ship I use a lot of Aleene's Tacky (sweet PVA) and new bottles are tackier. Since observing this I've been thinking about effect when I open a new Tamiya - think that's better too. Not a huge difference, but better. The stuff is cheap.
Wow that was super useful I'm glad I watched
Damn! Did not know this! Much appreciated for sharing!!!
Thank you… that has been driving me nuts. It is the simple things in life for sure….
Awesome, thank you, I just ordered my first bottle. This is probably top secret.
Excellent tip, thank you!
Thanks! Didn't know this either. Probably saved me a spill or two..
Thanks so much. This has been frustrating me for years.
Cool tip about a tip I will remember that I really like the extra thin cement thanks
I use those cheap testors paint brushes. The nylon brush never fuses and if you trim it into a tight angle, you can get really fine application.
Whaaaaat? O_O
That's unbelievable. Thank God youtube exists. 5 minutes agho I was wondering "What can I do to reach ethe bottom of my extrathin bottle...let me see what other people do". I feel so stupid because I already bought a second jar too.
Thanks for the tip
Had the same problem 👍
well now I feel like I wasted copious amounts of my time cleaning spills for no reason
Thank you, a nice simple fix.
Thank you for this great tip, It really helps a lot!!!
Thanks for the *tip* !
Thanks Brendon👍 Eco warrior and all round decent chap.
Cheers mate I'm going to adjust mine now.
Thanks for the info!
I like their brush applicator and it works for most situations, but the cap sometimes gets in the way or the applicator tube itself isn't long enough. Does anyone know of a similar styled brush that could be used?
Another one of life’s great mysteries solved! I’m hitting my forehead going “doh”! That’s super good to know! Thanks!
Thanks very much! I am just about hit that point with my current bottle.
Omg this is a lifesaver never even knew
i could never thought about that
Wow thanks for the tip
Thanks for the vid... I never knew that... Thanks again.
wow thanks for sharing! i never knew that.
Wow. I've been using this for ages and never realised.
Thanks a lot, this is golden! :D
Wow! That's helpful to know. Tyvm
How do you prevent the brush from picking up paint and then discolouring the rest of the glue in the bottle?
What I did, I removed the brush in the cap and I use a dedicated normal fine brush for glueing. That way you can always get in the bottle. The brush might harden out if you don't use it for a while, but when you use it again let it sit in the bottle for a little bit and the brush will be usable again.
Hi @mcroadk1II - what type of brush do you use and how do you stop the bristles gluing together?
@@the_zombie_ritual897 hi, it's a regular cheap synthetic brush. The funny thing is after you use it, it becomes rock hard, next time you use it, first you put it in the tamiya extra thin and voila the brush becomes soft again. 👍 i hope it helps.
@@MCRoadk1ll thanks so much!!
Really cool feature for Tamiya to include, be it intentional or just a by-product of the design. I tend to use a dedicated 00-sized brush for TET and remove the included brush from the cap, though.
Hi @mosokaiser - what type of brush do you use and how do you stop the bristles gluing together?
@@the_zombie_ritual897 Some type of natural hair (important, won't melt with solvent exposure) size 00 brush that I relegated to liquid cement duties after losing its ability to keep a fine point but still being perfectly good for cemen application. Bristles gluing together is not an issue with liquid cement like Tamiya Extra Thin, since those are essentially nothing but solvent so it alone won't stick bristles together, and whatever miniscule amounts of styrene the brush might pick up when used, potentially causing some stiffening, is instantly liquified when dipped in the cement again.
@@MosoKaiser Thanks so much!
Useful tip. I just used a separate brush or use a "flex I file" touch'n flow applicator.
thanks, I found this out a while ago whilst being annoyed by not being able to get the remaining glue. Same thing can be done to Mr Cement S.
Aw cool! And it was there all this time?
Brilliant thank you
Well that's a damn big surprise I didn't know this
cheers for sharing Doog
I dunno if I’m just super dumb but I always ruin the rod. It doesn’t stay in place and falls out.
Literally a mystery quest tip?😳
Jman👀
Already knew this from a differen video, but it blew my mind. You'd think that was something to advertise more XD
I drop a couple of stainless steel nuts into the bottle - that’s raises the level enough to use the last of the stuff!
When done - retrieve them and quick wipe down - ready for next time!
Hey Doogs, tamiyas design team just let out a collective " what the f@€k". Great tip cheers
How do you open it
"Aint nobody got time for that!" Great reference-were you wondering if anyone 'got it?" It was one of the best "man on the street" interviews ever. She was talking about asthma, from a house fire think.
Yeah, it's this thing called an "Internet meme"
I had no idea either....GREAT tip....also no pun intended
Me either... MY PENIS IS VERY LARGE... also no pun intended
I take the brush tip and fashion it to a bamboo skewer.
I add old sprue to the last of the cement allow it to melt and then I can use this gloop as a plastic filler works wonders
Brilliant!!
Lol thanks i just use plastercine/clay
Thank you Brandon Mikkelsen. I did NOT know that, holy crap... all these years...
After having just spilled half of my first bottle...........
This came in handy
an extension in the tip? Most excellent Doog-ster... thanks...
WHAT! GREAT TIP! 🎉
I bought some of this and I can't get it to stick well. Am I doing something wrong?
it doesn't "stick". Glue is actually a terrible name for it. It's more of a chemical welder. It melts styrene and then as it evaporates out the styrene cures "welded" together. Need to move relatively fast though as it evaporates quickly. If you can already get the two parts together and let capillary action pull it down the join, that's the ideal way to go.
Thank you
Thanks, Doogs.
Thank you thank you thank you
You don't need to pull the tip out using pliers. You can just pull the whole brush shaft out of the cap using your fingers and then just press it back in just not as far doing the same thing.
I started doing that with the Testors Liquid Cement oh those many years ago. I just thought everybody already knew how to solve this problem. Just goes to show that what you know doesn't mean that everyone else knows it too.
Well i have been doing that since this super thin cement came out. Guess great folks really do think alike...
Cool tip~ I have one myself that I want to use for minor repairs and customizing but I’m too worried to use it cause of the crazy cancer warning logo. Is it really that bad? Do I need to wear like a respirator? I have good ventilation in my house since my workstation is near a window, just wanted to ask how you all use it.
Caveat - I'm not a doctor. But my understanding is that, at commercial/professional exposure levels, that's where the risk exists. Obviously don't drink the stuff or use it as a lotion. But having a small pot on your desk and using it reasonably, the risks are minimal.
Doogs' Models hmmm, okay well I’m obviously not gonna be drinking the thing like some drunken master haha. But in all seriousness, how do you deal with the vapor that comes out when you open it? Have you ever inhaled it before? I’m not too experienced with the stuff and I tried using it. Just worried about the effects cause of the project I’m working on
I do 95% of my work in a garage, with the door opened, with airflow coming from behind me so I rarely have any concerns about ventilation. But even the rare times I do some work indoors, it's a small opening and the cap is usually only off the bottle for a few seconds at a time. It's never bothered me at all.
Doogs' Models so you’ve never really felt any side effects or bothered much of the fumes that come out of the bottle from use?
Nope. I'd be more concerned sitting in line at a drive-thru with the windows down.
Thank you ,
how long do these generally last
?
Cameron S. Quite a while - I've been using TET since 2013 I think (whatever year Revell's 109G-6 came out) and have only bought three bottles.
Thanks
Nice shout out for NUMSA's Pres Brandon.M!!!
They saved an issue that shouldn't be an issue in the first place.
You can also place a few Marbles in the cement container and get most of the glue out then transfer the difference to the next bottle.
That’s smart
Or as I recently found out Lacquer thinner works the same as Tamiya extra thin cement. I would bet that Tamiya extra thin cements is actually lacquer thinner. Lacquer is a very chemically hot solvent that melts plastic. So for the price of a quart of lacquer thinner you could buy 20 bottles of the extra thin cement. Just keep topping off your bottle. I love finding cheaper alternative model building products. People are paying way too much for brand name products.
Work cheaper and buy more models. But I like your tip of lengthening the brush
Thanks
well I don't know whats in TET but its the methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) in Lacquer thinner that doses the weld/melt
@@theguru18 Judging by the smell extra thin cement probaply uses acetone.
@@theguru18 My guess is Tet is just Mek.
Hey, what's up with the flurry of videos? I keep watching your black basing videos over and over again as they apply to my projects, so your view numbers are skewed a bit. I'm having trouble seeing the marbling, though. I see it on my projects, though, so that's how I follow you. You produced your series just in time for me to paint my Zero and my Spitfire. The Mr. paint is something I'd like to try. Thank You and keep it up!
Justine Smith camera sensor + glare from the lights really does a number on seeing the marbling pull through, frustratingly
You are awesome! Thanks, Matt!
Wowww, no way!! thanks...!!
Or you can take the insert from a used applicator and gain the extra lenght !
M.I.N.D.B.L.O.W.N..... :D
What can I say... thanks for sharing this tip ;)
PRO TIP !!!!
WOW!
Saw this the day after I bought by second bottle
thx
wish they would have done that with the thick cement
Hidden in plain sight😮
But in Japan they have so many different types of bottles of glue I wish we can get have of what the Tamiya hobby shop in Tokyo has u don't understand why we can't get the same products I have to travel to Japan 3 times a year just to get some of my supplies and models that you can only get in Japan its crazy.
Had THE accident just now.......:-(..............accidentally bumped my TET knocking it over, spilling half of it!!!!!
Jeffrey Sasquatch
Just happened to me fuck
huhuhuhu, nice!
Warm water. You take a tin brush and can resolve
Why can't they just design a longer brush that reached to the bottom?
Because it'd get all smashed up when the lid is screwed shut
👍🏼
Is Darth Vader speaking?
Lol, from day 1 I knew that 😂
I just use a dedicated cheep art brush for my applications.
Wow
Why can't Tamiya just put in a longer brush
It could hit the bottom and and mess up the tip there was an interview in a hobby magazine 7 or so years ago about this I'm going to try to find it... the question about the brush being short
@@Dot2TheLock I believe, as well as the Japanese build things, they certainly could make a glue bottle brush that does not quite touch the bottom.
I just put some small, clean, steel balls to raise the fluid level
You really don’t even need that much of this cement. You could I don’t know always just leave the bottle close. Then proceed to flip the bottle upside down. That will help get the cement to touch the brush??? The person you seen do this really reached there lol
... if you are a hard-core modeller you can save a lot of money, when you brew your glue DIY ... you just have to order 1 Liter of Butylacetat at your next pharmacy and 1 Liter of Aceton ... mix them together 1:1 and you've got enough glue for the next years. That brew works similar than Tamiya Extrathin ... smells the same and you could re-activate your dried out putty, to give them a second life. That's all together for about 20 Euro or a liitle less in US Dollars !!
And you get put on a government watch list!
