  • I got some requests to compare the vocals of Sebastian Bach vs. Erik Grönwall in Skid Row. It turns out to be a battle in many ways. Watch to see who YOU think is the best fit for the band!
Skid Row - Sebastian Bach vs. Erik Grönwall - Vocal Showdown - Who Did It Better? Ken Tamplin
I have received many requests on what my take is on the new singer for Skid Row.
As many people may or may not know, Skid Row has had quite a few singers in the band over many years, and believe it or not, Sebastian Bach is not the original singer.
But instead of focusing on all of the singers, I thought it would be best to stay with the request which was Sebastian Bach vs. Erik Grönwall.
Since Erik is relatively new in the band, I don't think it's fair to judge him so prematurely.
But I do think it's OK to enjoy taking a look at both vocalists' strong points and evaluate their strengths (and weaknesses) positively.
So I put together a montage of each one of them for evaluation with some of Skid Row's greatest hits to take a look at their performances back-to-back in hopes to do a blindfold test. So on the one hand, let's not judge based on nostalgia, or on the other hand, let's not be given only to the enchantments of something shiny and new.
Let's enjoy both singers together, shall we?

Ya Sebastian has way more charisma. Its not even close. Sebastian is one of the greatest frontmen ever. He's a beast in vocals and in stage presence. Like zero insecurities. Almost all these other front men were on drugs and masking insecuritues. Even Chris Cornell had mad anxiety.
Sebastian was an alpha frontman. Just chill and sure of himself in everything he did. Eric is very feminine and although he hits all the notes it like he is afraid to be a little off in the name of style.
I never got to see Robert Plant but Sebastian seems similar to me. Sebastian is just more masculine and less sentimental than almost any other great singer which tend to be feminine guys.
The only other guy I have seen like Sebastain was the Edwin the lead singer of Eye Mother Earth.

The first two skid row row albums are basically flawless. Bach is untouchable. A rock god amongst rock gods. Different era all together. Eric is far closer to the album than any of the replacement singers and closer than Bach has been in a very long time. An impossible task to “replace” vintage era Bach. You won’t hear those songs sung better today than what Eric is doing. Fantastic talent and congrats to him for living the dream.

I just saw Skid Row 2 days ago. The were one of my absolute favorites when they first came out! I saw them open for Bob Jovi 9 times in one year!!! I LOVE Sebastian and DID NOT want it like Eric, but he nailed it! Loved him!! My test is “In a Darkened Room”…. And he passed it with flying colors! As far as the energy, it’s the crowd not the band. I was seeing original Skid Row in my 20s! At this last show Rachel asked the crowd their age… who’s in their 20’s, 30’s, over 40. Well the vast majority was over 40…..I’m old enough to be Eric’s mother!!! I still love these shows and I’m on my feet singing along, but nothing like the crazy jumping around of 35 years ago!! Sebastian CAN NOT be replaced, and I’ve seen skid Row with 4 other lead singers. I liked ZP but the others were not at all a good fit. Eric is the real deal and I think is shows in the live performance and their new album. I think he could really revitalize the band.

I agree totally with this comment.
Erik when he performs tries to get too much crowd participation all of the time rather than just singing. He's always saying " yeah" and "come on everybody clap your hands" type thing like you'd see in a cover band so it kind of comes off that way or like he's doing Skid Row karaoke.
Bach in his youthful prime was up there with Axl Rose for great frontmen. I could see him being difficult to deal with though on the road as middle aged adults.
A little of his personality goes a long way so I understand why they never reformed the original lineup even if it would have meant a bigger payday.
That said I'd definitely pay to see them reunited with Bach but just feel kind of meh about it with Gronwall despite being a good singer.
It seems like the guys are happy with him though so I'm glad for them. But they've had so many singers now though it's getting into Spinal Tap esque joke territory.

You really do fantastic things! Being from Sweden, I can tell you that Erik did a talk on Swedish radio last week. We have this in the summers. A well known person gets to talk for 90 minutes, mixed with the persons favorite music. Therefor, I just wanted to add that Erik got the question to join the band almost immediately after his final treatment for the blood cancer. He had only a month to get in shape for his first shows with the band. The first days of preparing, he could barely sing through one song without beeing totally exhausted. I don't know from what time the clips you use are from, but maybe what I say here can shed some light on your nice comparison. However, this is not a critique. I only wanted to share this with you. Thanks a lot!

I'm happy to see a few people explaining that Erik was still recovering from Leukemia treatment and was probably needing to pace himself . I know even this past fall Skid Row postponed some of their tour to allow him more time to recover as touring was taking a toll on his health and he recently stepped away from the band to prioritize his health in a way he could not do in a touring band.
I love Baz but also think Erik had done an amazing job as a singer with Skid Row and the album he did with them is great.

The biggest variable here is the fact that Sebastian in those clips is relying solely on floor monitors. In-ear monitors weren't even really a thing back then. I'm quite certain that Erik is running in-ears. That makes a HUGE difference. As a singer, I can tell you that the ease with which you can hear yourself makes ALL the difference.

    • @dodjiegarcia2320
      @dodjiegarcia2320 Год назад +1

Not to mention the soundguy does not worry about feedback if everyone does IEMs onstage. Or at least you do not need to crank up vocals in the monitor mix in the wedges, which before made it prone to feedback. Rock is not easy to mix onstage especially with those half-stacks and sidefills. And once the singer asks for more vocals in the mix, and cannot give it, the tendency is to be a lot throatier.
But then, IEM can change someone's style of singing.

The emotional conveyance of this song originally achieved by SB is what makes it so special IMO...and without that Erik's rendition would be of lesser value. Here's how I see it.... Erik had to come in and duplicate an iconic voice. He does it, and he does it so well. I am Sebastian's age, so "I Remember You (Sebastian)", and neither of us are who we were in the 80's. I saw Winger/Warrant/Skid Row last year (2022) in Dayton, OH where I live. I was so impressed with Erik, he sounded soooo good. So much so, that I went back and saw Skid Row again this year. Erik is a professional, lots of energy and no sign of intoxication. The new album is excellent (that's right, new). Personally, I think "Time Bomb" should be on all the rock stations that keep playing the same music year after year.
Of course I love Sebastian's (young) voice, but he doesn't have it anymore. New music is bringing in young listeners and keeping Rachel, Snake, and the band motivated. I think with Erik, they still have lots of new music ahead. If Sebastian wasn't running around trashing Erik like he is, maybe I would feel differently. Go see Skid Row if you get the opportunity. They still sound awesome....thanks to Erik.

Great video! But let’s be real on a few of these comparisons:
    - Sebastian in his early 20s vs Erik mid 30s. This 15 year age difference has a huge impact on vocal strength and stamina. Yet Erik still sounds stronger. Baz is more emotion, but extremely pitchy and all over the place at times.
    - Sebastian singing as the original lead singer vs Erik filling shoes. Who do you think would have more passion? This comes across in the energy of not just Baz, but the entire band.
    - Sebastian singing in front of 10,000+ fans vs Erik singing in front of a couple thousand. The band feeds off the energy of the crowd. Baz has the advantage. And you wonder why it sounds ‘clubby’? You’re affected by what you see - a bigger crowd, better lights, younger band members.
    - Sebastian singing with other bandmates his age (early 20s) vs Erik singing with guys hovering around 60 (old enough to be his father and uncles). Don’t you think this also plays an impact on Erik’s performance vs Baz’s?
One final comparison: Sebastian’s height, long hair, shirtless body and pretty boy looks also give him an advantage as this may be considered the ideal “rockstar” look. This is an image comparison that has nothing to do with their vocal abilities.
Sebastian will always the “the singer” of Skid Row, but Erik is doing a fine job filling in his shoes. In fact, I can’t imagine anyone doing it better. Erik, IMO, is a better fit with his first band, HEAT. As awesome as Skid Row’s first 2 album were, I prefer HEAT’s albums with Erik. As a whole, the songwriting, performances, and productions are all superior in my opinion.

I see your point of their age gap. In Sebastian’s mid 30 was his Broadway era. I saw his Jesus Christ Superstar 3 times and his pitching was so much better than his 20’s. So, what I wanna point out is, this benefits and de benefits both ways.
Erik doesn’t have the Rockstar power to shake the house in 30’s compared to Baz in 20’s. Also Baz in 20’s didn’t have good pitching skills compared to Erik in 30’s.

Yeah, I mean I thought this was a VOCAL showdown, but Ken definitely comments outside of those parameters. Even so, *I'm* doing the vocal showdown in my head without additional comments on passion, looks, and the size of the crowd, and it's just no comparison. Bach's vocal warmth, vibrato, attack, etc. is just superior singing. I could care less about pitch between the two, because it's the overall vocal PERFORMANCE that really matters, and Bach has it in spades.

Sebastian got to feel his crowds energy and that fired him up even more. Sebastian's crowd was teens and 20 something's full of piss and beer. Erik is singing to the same crowd 30 years later. So he is singing to a crowd of 50 somethings that just had dinner before the show and wore sensible shoes. Total different energy

But you can bet your ass off that this music is not just for youth of that era. I was 5 years old when Sebastian left Skid Row, and I'd bang my head off in a concert.

I think you underestimate the power of music to transport us back to our youth. I was 18 in 1983. I lived through the best of rock/metal and virtually ALL we did was wrapped around music. I don’t have the time or resources (tickets are insane today) to see as many shows these days, but when I do I’d match my energy against that of a hoard of booger-eaters any day. My shoes got nothin’ to do with it. 🤘😎🤘

That’s such a genius and true observation/comment! 👏🏻 I‘ve seen him and the band last Saturday and I couldn’t believe how perfect it was. I had seen RUclips videos beforehand and as good Erik sings in all of them… what happened here last Saturday night was a completely different animal. And when I read your comment it all makes sense: The crowd here was younger than the usual Skid Row crowd nowadays. That’s because it was a Festival. Skid Row were Headliners but the audience was mostly just young rock enthusiasts that came out for the whole festival. The mood was already heated up when Skid Row entered the stage… but man they blew the roof off! Awesome, awesome, awesome! The audience went nuts and the band just mirrored and further pushed it. That I could experience this again - after having seen Skid Row with Sebastian Bach at their peak - I won‘t forget last weekend! Thanks to the crowd who enabled the band and Erik to push it over all limits! 🙏🏻

Eric is the best vocalist Skid Row could meet since Sebastian Bach was fired from the band. He really can sing , he seems happy singing in the band , he has many positive traits as a singer , but it was given him a hard job : follow the footprints of a legend and sing to an older audience. I wish good luck to him and the band, I liked some few of their new songs : I didn't listen to the band songs since Sebastian left. Sadly , I miss Sebastian terribly , he was the soul and passion of Skid Row and no one can replace him. Thanks for sharing, Ken !

2 things that I have been thinking about since I first heard Erik. 1. There is a huge difference between what it takes to CREATE these huge vocal parts for massive hit songs... vs. what it takes to come back later and essentially cover them.. (same with Arnel Pineda and Journey). So you have to give props (which you certainly did) to the creators... they started with NOTHING and created this magic. And 2. Erik is KILLING it! He is filling HUGE shoes, and in my opinion, this is the first time Skid Row has sounded like Skid Row since Bas left. Erik is one extremely talented dude (like Arnel Pineda), and absolutely brings it. One of the possibilities in the "club like" energy that Erik is experiencing, is that most Skid fans are my age (I am 47). A little older crowd is obviously not going to have the energy that you are seeing from the crowds in the videos from 30 years ago.. I know I don't still have the same energy as I did when I was 17!!! LOL. Great video Ken... I enjoyed it and appreciate the time you invested.

Hey man, I enjoyed your take on these 2 men. The comments don’t give you the props you deserve for putting up this comparison.
Having put aside my ass kissing.
I think Gronwall is performing within parameters set for by the band. And he’s doing a great job.
However, Sebastian is on a stratosphere of his own. I saw Skid Row in Providence RI back in 1995 and Sebastian was wild. Then again I saw the band in Pensacola Fl. In 2011. (Not Gronwall) These were 2 different shows and experiences altogether.
I think you were fair and gave both singers fair criticism.
This video reminded me of best heavyweights debates. Different eras, different everything.
All in all, Gronwall held his own and is living the dream. But Sebastian Bach is and will always be Skid Row.

I don’t think the energy of a young band and young crowd can be compared to an older band with an older crowd! Yes we are still passionate about our music in our 50s but it’s still different.
Sebastian is a crazy animal, still is. He never grew up. 😆 He can still sing amazing too! Which says something for his range and age after all these years.
Having said all of that. I absolutely love Erik! His vocal range and energy are fantastic and maybe not really the best fit for an older band. I saw him on MORC in H.E.A.T. and he was unbelievable, crowd surfed and ended up in one of the hot tubs across the top deck Swinging from the chandeliers practically so that’s why I feel the comparison isn’t accurate. Plus, he’s still getting stronger after recovering from cancer. 🤘🏻

It's like Sebastian is actually thinking about someone, and when Erik sings it's like he's only thinking about his pitch. I absolutely love Eric Clapton. He's awesome. plays perfect and is a great singer, but I don't feel it. I feel it when JJ Cale does the songs he wrote, and although Eric Clapton had huge hits and is well known for them. I read this comment before I heard the clips and I couldn't agree more. There's emotion in Sebastian's delivery. Erik's is more - robotic and perfunctory - for the lack of a better description. I think this is also the case with Arnel Pineda replacing Steve Perry as Journey's lead singer. It's the emotion the original singers convey that it's difficult for a replacement singer to replicate.

As a singer in my hard rock band, I agree with a lot of things that you have said and I feel it’s spot on. My opinion is as much as Erik is a great singer with a lot of range, he doesn’t have the same charisma, energy and intensity that I feel is needed in this genre. I have said this before too about the other SR members now, they lack energy and it kinda feels like they are just going through the motions. As much as it’s great to hit all the notes and be spot on in your pitch I feel intensity, passion and are so important particularly in this genre and also with Sebastian I believed every word as if he wrote the song himself so for me Sebastian was the full package.

This has been awesome and I enjoyed it very much! Great job and thank you for your hard work. As a singer and long time lover of Rock I have a few thoughts to share that I was processing as I watched your video. The comparison is really not only vocals. That should also be a lesson to all of us. It’s not just the technical part of singing but it’s also the ability to draw emotion from the crowd. The original Skid Row’s audience were young just like the band. It was new, innovative and an expression of that particular generation. You can’t reproduce that. The audience is still the same folks but all quite senior now. They don’t have the energy either. The dynamic with the new Skid Row is a young guy playing to the old folks. The songs that they loved. It’s not the same. It’s not all about vocals. It’s now a business. Let’s try to provide this older audience a glimpse of the past with a high quality young singer. Erik is amazing. He should be fronting his own band with his own sound. Skid Row without Sebastian is just the same as a tribute band. I don’t know what Sebastian did yet. I’ll look into it but as a professional vocalist he earned his space and delivered what we were all looking for. He expressed the unsettled energy that we were all feeling as young people. Great memories for me! Thanks again. It was a place in time. That’s all.

Sebastian Bach is the greatest hard rock singer ofall time. His voice is almost perfect on every Skid album. I Remember You is the best vocal performance ever recorded, in my opinion. Nothing taken away from Erik. It's just that Bach's recordings are masterpieces. To speak more to your comments, I was just telling my daughter the other day that the reason Bach is such a legend is that he made the MOST difficult decision when singing, almost ALWAYS. Yes, live sometimes that won't translate, but it is like playing Eddie or Steve Vai twenty years later after the innovation and critiquing. I agree those risks are what made him special.

Comparing the 2 I can hear the intense passion more in younger Sebastian’s voice & he was a real hottie. I have more respect for Erik. Loved this analysis, very fair. I will say that I saw Erik a few days ago in Reno, and his vocal ability has improved significantly from these earlier Skid Row clips you showed. He was great then, so you can imagine how good he was in Reno. He's gotten more comfortable, solidified his own style, and has a lot more energy and presence. It's true he does match Sebastian's voice almost 100% to the studio recordings, but I think that's what people want to hear. Trust me, he won the crowd over in a big way, getting standing ovations in mid song for the high notes that he crushed. He doesn't have the stage presence or charisma Sebastian had in his prime, but who does? He's still got plenty in his own right, and unlike Bas, isn't a pain in the ass to deal with and doesn't hurl glass bottles at innocent fans. In 2022, I'd much rather see Skid Row with Erik than the current version of Sebastian. He's resurrected this band and has come to overshadow them live. It was honestly the best live vocal performance I've seen in person in 30+ years of attending rock concerts.
