    • @GloriamMonarchia

      It's difficult for those who do not know how to imitate sound. I was often assessed as having great or perfect French pronounciation (on my DELF exam I got the highest marking on the spoken test, after the reading one), but I don't know how to express myself, or write - yet; on those my marks were much lower. It is just an inborn ability to hear & reproduce certain sounds. French is a very musical language too. They can just speak and it sounds like they're singing.

    @kaymuldoon3575 4 года назад +337

    I took French in high school back in the late 70s, and my French teacher was amazing. She explained that to properly pronounce the “r” is to pretend you are gargling but with no water, but to make the sound very softly and subtly, and not the harsh sound, same as what you were explaining in this video.
    That helped me tremendously and afterwards I had the pronunciation down pat.

    • @juch3
      @juch3 4 года назад +17

      Basically the french R (uvular fricative) is like gargling but with a dry throat. If your uvula is too wet and vibrates to much then it may turn into the german R instead (uvular trill).

      Well The French R sound is very common in European Portuguese. The Portugeuse "initial R" and "RR" are pronounced like the French R. Example: ronaldo, torre
      But most people in the north pronounce them like the Spanish R and RR (respectively).
      In Brazilian Portuguese, they sound exactly like English H.

      How so? As a fluent spanish speaker, I totally agree with mania. The R is very similar to the Grrrrrrra used for a machine gun noise.
      What could you possibly be disagreeing with?

    Frickin best video ever! I had a friend of mine try to explain to me for days, telling me to just "make the sound" but I couldn't because I didn't know what to do with my mouth. Comparing this to the H sound is extremely helpful, as if I don't get it right it still sounds understandable.

    After about 10 minutes of fiddling, I can finally pronounce it! It isn’t quite perfect yet. Doesn’t have to be. It will eventually evolve into a really good R. And for evolution, I believe listening is the best thing one can do. I picked up British English even though here in India, English has a weird accent, just by listening to it over and over again.

    You're lessons are great! Spanish is my mother tongue, but I really love French. I took lessons many years ago, but I have difficulties pronouncing one word in particular, which is 'arbre'.
    My native French teacher taught me the 'r' pronunciation with one of the same manner of articulation you use in this video (pressing the tongue against the lower teeth and make that 'h' sound) . But I just can't say it correctly.

    This isn't the problem I end up having. My problem is that the French "r" is actually multiple sounds in different environments, but while I can do a light uvular fricative at the start of a syllable, if it's final and requires me to move to a consonant, it gets hard: "parler" is a surprisingly difficult word in French, and has an awkward hiatus between the syllables.

    Hi! You know what? I'm learning English, and it's truly great to know that I can understand what you're saying and, at the same time, I'm catching up the skill of another language! I desire to be able to speak both English and French, and, yeah, even if I make mistakes with, I'm feeling more confident. It is delicious knowing how many shapes, colours and vibrations other languages can have! I won't give up. ^^
    Greetings from Colombia, wish you the best, everyone!
