What Happened to Remington Steele (1982-87)?

  • Long before he was James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was a young Irish actor who became an overnight heartthrob when he was signed to star in the NBC series Remington Steele. Co-starring Stephanie Zimbalist, the show was about a female private eye who crested a fictional male boss to be taken seriously, only for a roguish man to show up claiming to be the character she invented. A mash-up of film noir and old-school Hitchcock like To Catch a Thief, the show was a smash and ran for five years. While it made Brosnan a star, it also arguably cost him his first opportunity at playing 007 when the show’s producers wouldn’t let him out of his contract for the abbreviated fifth season (it would also cost Zimbalist the role of Lewis in Robocop). In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, our host Jessica Dwyer explains how this show came to be and why it kept Brosnan from playing 007 for so many years.

I was terribly torn at the time between having Brosnan do James Bond and having him continue as Remington Steele. I loved the show so much that I wanted it to continue but I grew up watching the Bond films. Luckily, fans like me ended up with both. Thanks for posting about one of my favorite shows!

I admired Stephanie Zimbalist and Kate Jackson in a similar way. They both played intelligent, feminine and capable women who didn't take themselves too seriously. And both were gorgeous in my opinion in a way that wasn't overtly sexual and entitled.

I haven't rewatched this detective show since originally airing, but I still believe to remember Remington Steele asking Laura how she knows he actually isn't Remingron Steele and then her majestic frustration because she couldn't admit that she invented him. Although later on in the series she does tell people but they didn't believe her and accuse her of envy of her boss.
Much of the fun in the interaction between Steele and Laura was that she was always angry about his identity theft and that she couldn't find out nor prove who he really was, throughout the entire series. And he kept trying to charm her to give it up while actually growing from winging it into becoming a good detecrive after all.

Sorry - one correction. The pilot episode was actually the 2nd episode broadcast. The License to Steel was created to be the first episode because NBC suits said the show needed a backstory. Also, the series went overseas to avoid to the logistics issues of the summer Olympics being held in Los Angeles in 1984.

watched some episodes and this show still holds up; the relationship issues of the 2 leads could be copy pasted into any current show and thats why you cant remake it, because its still everwhere, e.g. Bones, Castle, Mentalist... the same Remington Steele formula for 2 leads at odds paired together to solve crimes, w her being the trained intellectual and him being the quirkier/comedic/eccentric one, in a will they-wont they relationship is still being used in tv shows. So there is no need to remake

In fact, the network 'suits' rather than the MTM producers were the ones who effectively prevented Brosnan from taking the 007 role (but then, the delay had proven to be a blessing; had he gotten the role _then_ he would presumably have had to cool his heels for 5+ years while the legal tussles were being sorted out).

I think you could do a remake series and it would still be topical today, but it seems like it would be very hard to beat the Brosnan & Zimbalist casting. I do worry a modern take on the concept would dumb down the Steele character for comic relief.

Great video and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm watching the series now, in season two and loving it. I like the Thin Man movies, Mr and Mrs North, McMillan and Wife. Who stole what from whom? They're all good and fun. I did think the writer protested too much about Zimbalist's contribution. Let's face it, she was immediately lost in the shadow of Brosnan (see the Season 1 DVD box where she was completely left out!). I liked Zimbalist, but it was Brosnan's show, in spite of who got top billing. She joins Shatner outshone by Nimoy, Alice outsassed by Flo, and many other stars whose supporting players stole the show.

You couldn't make Remington Steele today. Any remake would ruin it. A large part of Steele's charm was in the small mannerism that modern "sensibilities" would deem "problematic" or even outright misogynist. Despite his playful trickster traits (and evidently being a con artist before taking on the role of PI), he was a gentleman through and through, complete with all the proper attitudes in regards of how to conduct oneself in presence of, or towards, women.

you didn't mention that the reason why there was a rift between Stephanie and Pierce was because she was supposed to be the star of the show, while he was supposed to be more in a supporting role. That changed due to Pierce's looks, charisma, talent and comic ability, and he became a main character. As a result, Stephanie despised him. She was classically trained while he learned through experience, so she thought he wasn't her equal and essentially looked down on him. On his side, he thought she was a snobish stick in the mud. So they hated each other

I have no idea what this channel is or anything, everything seems weird to me. But this video especially, compared to the other three I clicked, had awful sound. I seriously thought it was a 1000 subs or less channel. If it's something that seems like an organized collaboration I'd assume someone would at least give directions on how to make each video an equal viewing experience. It's not even mic quality or anything like that, but just how it's mastered. Volume is low, EQ is bad and I don't even know if there's any compression on it. If there's even anything done to the audio at all.
