crazy how everyone that was shot and killed had a positive message to the youth; to stay in school, do something you love, do everything to the fullest of your abilities. Just that they were already deeply rooted to the Street Life.
Ali G it’s Feb 2 2020 as I sit here today and reply to your question. We now know that it was a corrupt government run by a Globalist banking cartel that designed this horrific nightmare lifestyle for these gullible people. Nothing is free included government housing, food, health welfare programs. Even their free education was/is an indoctrination. The real path out of the hood is a job and there is where the control mechanism is.... JOBS... MAKE ALL OF AMERICA GREAT AGAIN....JOBS, JOBS , JOBS!
I grew up and hung out on these streets. It's crazy watching people in his video i know who are not here today. wow Special shout out to everybody still living in THE TOWN. Be safe and stay blessed 😍
This was an outstanding film. Coming from the streets of DC, it didn't seem as bad as Oakland. But the drama is nearly the same. For me, I decided to give Uncle Sam a try. And it has been the turning point in my life. I look back (over 15 years ago) and I say. What would life be like for me, I if I didn't do something different? The U.S Army help me grow as a person, despite the war issues people have with the Army. There has been countless positives life experiences with the Armed Forces.
Thank God you made it out God has plans for people or forcing people be playing with the devil ref plans to destroy their life. I lived in the Bay for 35 years and now I moved back to Nacogdoches Texas and my heart 💜❤️ is saddened to see how things went wrong because of politics, corruption, drugs,, etc etc. In 1975 East Oakland was a working class nice community,, this breaks my heart,,. My oldest son is 48 and he has not been able to escape that Oakland Mentality, he is here in Texas now but I wish I had left sooner
This corrupt culture needs to turn from their rescind their corruption or anger or violence Jesus Christ die is one thing dying without Jesus Christ is how forever there's no gangsters in hell is only weeping and gnashing of teeth crying like little boys forever. With no remedy today is the day of salvation today is the day one could experience love from above before it's too late
I'm from SF, me and my family were about to move out there in East or West Oakland because our landlord evicted us. Thankfully, we were able to remain in SF for the time being. The neighborhood we're in, is less safe than the one we were living in before, but even though this neighborhood is unsafe, I and a lot of people would prefer almost anything over East or West Oakland.
Sad, I grew up in the projects of Chicago. I decided to enter college, because I wanted to give my son a better life. Graduated in 87 from nursing school, thank God I got out! Why don't they go to school, and get a skill?

Yeah the camera crew trippin riding around with some hot boyz. If they light the car up everyone done. They was lighting shit up with choppers back in the days, night time and broad daylight.
Praying for my town its gotten worse since after my elementary days and that was 08. I still got hope, wish the gov didnt mess with the black panthers uniting the people. Long live the Oakland legends.
*what i learned from this video* 1. Jobs shut down 2. Without jobs people go crazy 3. Who supplies those jobs the government 4. it seems like its the governments fault that there is no oppertunities 5. But its also the peoples fault for putting a value on paper 6. who forced the people to put a value on paper? the government 7. So ultimately its the governments fault 8. Conclusion, government don't give a shit about you boy, so instead of killing one another to war with the government
+Ozonencb government do not supply jobs. America is owned by private corporations. Look across rural America. Same thing. An industry comes in, creates jobs; then leaves and ships them overseas. Town is ruined. Crime, poverty and lack of morality goes with it.
Stunami yes yes that's old news even governments are slaves, but at the end of the day, there's only one persons who put value on worthless paper and that is the people.
I’m born raised West Side of Chicago. Stayed in East and west Oakland fir 2 weeks total . I lived in Vegas for 6 years was always in LA and OC . Was in west LA . East LA north Hollywood watts Compton . It was bad but not Chicago bad . Nothing to brag about but Chicago is a different beasts. But Oakland is just like Chicago. It’s fucking crazy in Oakland

With this gentrification bullshit, theres no shortage of dope money. Idk. Im from the 209 and ive been everywhere. Oakland is something special.
Ni Patterson you’re absolutely correct. That’s how it should be. Too many people hide behind guns. It’s easy to pull a trigger, sometimes not as easy to throw down. Takes more heart. Imo. Sometimes guns are necessary but many many times they’re not. God bless you.
Danny Thompson Oakland IS something special. I used to live there. And I was born there. So it holds a place in my heart for sure. Btw I just moved to the 209! What a trip! It’s a little different out here. Different can be good! The only bad thing is how HOT it gets out here! And right now summer is just starting and it’s already hot as fuck!!!!! I hate that part about Modesto!!! Thank God for pools and air conditioning!!! God bless you! Btw where in the 209 are you from?
The problem is alotta these thugs in oakland werent raised with alotta love and compassion so now that they older that dont have any compassion or regard for human life so the bi product of that is more fighting more shootings and more killings its decadence at its finest.....the city is rotting from the inside out
we're doomed. this footage make me want to cry, no wonder the Raiders are leaving town, if we're not careful the A's will follow ... is this the end of Oakland?
@morenazo952 I can attest to that. I was one of those more privileged white people from the east bay who spent too many years lost in east oakland doing drugs. I'm sad I ruined that association for myself because I really do love east Oakland but have a hard time going back without feeling some type of way about it. That being said, drug abuse is rampant among all the other races in Oakland, which is just an unfortunate manifestation of the lack of resources and opportunity out there and the lifestyle in general that lots of folks get involved in initially just to survive and then pay the ultimate price.
I lived near 105th and Edes for one year in 2008-9 and two shootings happened that year, once while i was taking a piss in the bathroom heard the rattle of shots. East oakland is no joke, and ive been to alot of hoods coast to coast. Ive never seen shit like ive seen in oakland, guns are so damn common yet the law abiding citizens cannot even concealed carry to protect themselves. Those narrow streets are dangerous because they can be blocked easily and you can get stuck in a dead end and it can get ugly. My neighbors front door was kicked in and some crackheads held the poor family at knifepoint and stole a bunch of stuff. I slept with an AR15 by my bed and kept the pocket rocket on me. I was also an alcoholic at this time drinking every single night to ease the nerves, i would ALWAYS have a gun nearby because i was paranoid the front door would get kicked in at any moment. I moved to a quiet mountain town near Chico in 2010 and i miss the bay area alot. But everytime i visit im reminded of why i left, my GF was recently robbed for her purse on 23rd and san pablo in broad daylight, my friend who moved to 29th in west oakland got into a shootout the first month he moved there defending himself from attempted robbers. I know people who have been carjacked in both oakland and SF....I lost 3 friends who were killed in san francisco gang violence and know of dozens of others killed and im not even from the hood or in the streets im a square who works a 9-5....Part of me wants to move back to the bay, but then im reminded of this documentary and all the homies ive lost from east bay to san francisco and i appreciate just living in the mountains away from all of this nonsense. The fear of having to watch your back pumping gas or getting a drink is a huge paranoia that i feel when back in oakland. When visiting my friends house in west oakland i became so paranoid that i had to have him walk me to the car with the hammer because i had a backpack on me i was sure someone would try to snatch. California needs to wake up and make concealed carry legal so that law abiding citizens can protect themselves. I would rather break the law and carry concealed when i visit oakland, its a place i honestly try to avoid but i have alot of friends who live there since gentrification pushed everyone out of SF. CA needs LEGAL CONCEALED CARRY for people like me who are not in gangs or street activities but are potential victims of robbery.
In the 1920s Mexicans was Already Gang Banging Throwing Gang Signs Meanwhile in the 1920s Black people was Marching for Civil Rightz , Tap Dancing , And singing the Blues😂😂😂
Very well put together documentary. I admire your work Mr. Grijalva. The entire composition was effective. I know a little bit about Oakland, as I am from Reno and I used to make trips to East O. back in the day. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Good job!
Oakland was a different city for me to grow up in than it is now. But around this 80's is when I noticed a change. Lots of people I knew around my age started using crack. It turned into an epidemic.Too many of these young adults today are the kids of past crack addicts. It's very sad the way things are.
If I made as much money as "Pretty Black" I would get my ass up out of that cesspool. I would move into a condo somewhere and invest that money like Jay Z did. It's insane to own and park a Hummer and a Lamborghini on the street, IN THAT CESSPOOL and not expect a hater to do something to your property, or you.
Bobby "BLUENOSE"was my homeboy....good dude, everything his mother and sister said was so true , very gentle soul, we actually met in college!....don't let these documentaries fool you, everybody ain't a "street dude"..... I've been in Oakland my whole life, over forty years, now.....I didn't know Pretty Black, personally, but I lived and had to raise my son right where he was filmed in both his segments, we had to pass that gas station every day from preschool to elementary school, my son was born over there ....Hennesy was known all over the town, he had three or four purple cars and a van....we used to see his van or car parked and run up and spin them wheels.....
It's crazy because im 39 and still losing childhood friends to the streets because they refuse to get away from the hood I lost more than 30 friends it's crazy grown men thinking like kids I struggled but I refused to stay there I saved up with my girlfriend and bounced with 2500 dollars and we struggled at first but didn't give up and now im living good home, car, jeep and motorcycle brand new shit nothing used just being focused and doing right made it better
Lived in East Oaktown off MacArthur in the late 70's and lot's of this is just everyday living. Worked with a guy @Safeway Eastmont mall who showed me his scars from shooting heroin and told me about how he and his best friend tried to shoot each other over a bad dope deal Notice the sign saying Eastmont Wellness Center in the background, that used to be a JC Penny's before the local ghetto culture closed them down. A friend of mine was shot in the elbow after buying orange juice @the corner of 82nd and MacArthur(Jim's Liquor and Deli) in the 80's.Robbery gone bad. Keeping it "real".
Town that , because between the Town , Crest and City the Bay put me through College when I'm from Detroit , and a lot of my kinfolks ain't even had no chance like that they giving me , so forever thankful -RIP To The Jack
Sad, The Town went crazy in 85 crack era, got worse in 96, and as of today it's 2021 it's horrible. Gentrification, Homelessness, and homicides. I pray for my city. I almost lost my little brother in them streets. Smh I love the Town but I'm glad I got out.
All my family from Oakland the 30s a 100s we moved out to Stockton at 10. It’s always crazy feeling watching someone in a video to them passing away like they was just here. Crazy
Crazy seeing the my old neighborhood on a doc about violence. This shit is for real- no exaggerations. Most violent place I've ever been, i had to get out, but that's still my home. Wish these docs talked about how it is for women of color in Oakland too, though. We deal with at that mess but while being smaller, (usually) weaker, possibly pregnant or raising kids, and much more likely to be raped.
+Sarahbella Deerwoman Trujillo thx for your comment. What 's to be at chool looks like? ( we saw a lots of people who stop the school or are missing the schools days, what do you think about it)
this really a stark contrast to a lot of these hood DVDs just exploiting people that are going through hell for views - this shit really dug into why the hood is the way it is, the pain people really go thru every day, and how deep-rooted these problems are
i came back to Oakland in june 2011 and my fam talked me into staying for good i got shot at twice in the first week of being back in that city after being gone for ten years, i was on the next plane out of their and back to kansas this vid is 100% truth, i have lots of fam in east and west Oakland, San Leandro, richmond the whole damn bay area was at war back then, idk if its still like that now in 2014, i bet it is
I'm from the bay born n raised still here, most of it aint like this just oakland, san Leandro, richmond, a bit of hayward n martinez. the rest is cool
Lion of Yahawadah meh, Oakland is getting worse, take a look at crime rate and statistics. And check this out, i'm going to Laney College in Oakland in 1 year...if guns were allowed on campus i'd get me a nine.

Make a brighter light to strive for. I've lost friends to glorifying street life. It takes real strength to do the right thing. stay up my friends. keep the peace and spread the love. the music brings us together. not the violence

@@jumpman1234Oakland was definitely tough I have family in Oakland still till this day but growing up as a 15 in 2007 the same age as the kid in the wheel chair and we used to visit my cousins back then in the mid 2000s I remember going to some of them sideshows times were crazier people were able to get away with a lot my cousin would always tell his boys were getting shot killed way to often for how young we were to experince something like that it’s crazy . My cousin been through a lot now he suffers from ptsd I served in Afghanistan I know ptsd when I see it I served with some hard ass dudes who would freeze up under mortar attacks or gun fire that fear alone makes you man and just to know these young men when through just as much trauma as a solider in Iraq in 2004-2005
2021, just stumbled across this video and I’m gutted by sadness especially for the mother who lost her 2 sons, and their sister who lost 2 brothers, I’ve lost 3 to cancer and my youngest too. It’s a heartbreak that’s hard to describe, but as a mother I don’t think I would want to go on losing a child, actually I wouldn’t want to go on. My heart goes out to them. I’m sorry for you loss. Watching from Ohio. 😢💕💕
If you ever take advice from someone, take it from the most successful entertainers out there which is, you can't stay and live in the area you're from if you become successful. Get out of there. People will despise you and try to take you out. This video is all the proof you need.
@Guitargreat this coming from a most likely white guy living in the suburbs never having to be raised around poverty and violence🤦🏽♂️ always easy for you to say something like this unless you've lived in their shoes
I can't speak on Oakland per se but I've lived in LA & NYC so I witnessed a lot of the same violence but what is missing or rarely if ever discussed is how the Reagan era policies helped destroy many of these neighborhoods. Granted these areas were already impoverished but we still had a sense of community, local jobs & factories, rec. centers as well as other youth orientated programs but once these jobs were exported & the programs eliminated a void was created which was quickly filled w/ drugs and violence.
After over 35 years of being raised in the bay area, I can finally say I made it out ,and up a level in life. I would've never had a house of my own if I stayed in the bay!! Now they are raising the cost of living so high to force everybody to leave!! Unless you are a millionaire, you got no chance of owning a house or property which means that you're gonna be struggling to survive til your last breath! And that's no way to live, least not for me. Everyone tries to say they're from the Bay everywhere I go, and I just fuckn' laugh!! I can always spot a fake!!

crazy how everyone that was shot and killed had a positive message to the youth;
to stay in school, do something you love, do everything to the fullest of your abilities.

Aside from the violence, I miss how it was
Me too brah
This was an outstanding film. Coming from the streets of DC, it didn't seem as bad as Oakland. But the drama is nearly the same. For me, I decided to give Uncle Sam a try. And it has been the turning point in my life. I look back (over 15 years ago) and I say. What would life be like for me, I if I didn't do something different? The U.S Army help me grow as a person, despite the war issues people have with the Army. There has been countless positives life experiences with the Armed Forces.
Thank God you made it out God has plans for people or forcing people be playing with the devil ref plans to destroy their life.
I pray people see this is a spiritual warfare in the way out is Jesus Christ the way to freedom is Jesus Christ

*what i learned from this video*
1. Jobs shut down
2. Without jobs people go crazy
3. Who supplies those jobs the government
4. it seems like its the governments fault that there is no oppertunities
5. But its also the peoples fault for putting a value on paper
6. who forced the people to put a value on paper? the government
7. So ultimately its the governments fault
8. Conclusion, government don't give a shit about you boy, so instead of killing one another to war with the government
Then people kill people..
+Ozonencb Government doesn't supply any jobs.
+Ozonencb government do not supply jobs. America is owned by private corporations. Look across rural America. Same thing. An industry comes in, creates jobs; then leaves and ships them overseas. Town is ruined. Crime, poverty and lack of morality goes with it.

yes yes that's old news even governments are slaves, but at the end of the day, there's only one persons who put value on worthless paper and that is the people.

Ni Patterson you’re absolutely correct. That’s how it should be. Too many people hide behind guns. It’s easy to pull a trigger, sometimes not as easy to throw down. Takes more heart. Imo. Sometimes guns are necessary but many many times they’re not. God bless you.

Most of these post are made from someone on the outside looking in.
Watching in 2019. So sad all of the senseless deaths also interesting seeing how much phrases have change.
@morenazo952 aint that something so the crackheads and drug users are mostly white people
@morenazo952 I can attest to that.
Yes they do.
Trusting Jesus

Oakland was a different city for me to grow up in than it is now. But around this 80's is when I noticed a change. Lots of people I knew around my age started using crack. It turned into an epidemic.Too many of these young adults today are the kids of past crack addicts. It's very sad the way things are.

Guitargreat ur acting like they’re inhuman bro
So True
So much tragedy.... So many killings, but for what.. Why ??
After over 35 years of being raised in the bay area, I can finally say I made it out ,and up a level in life. I would've never had a house of my own if I stayed in the bay!! Now they are raising the cost of living so high to force everybody to leave!! Unless you are a millionaire, you got no chance of owning a house or property which means that you're gonna be struggling to survive til your last breath! And that's no way to live, least not for me. Everyone tries to say they're from the Bay everywhere I go, and I just fuckn' laugh!! I can always spot a fake!!
The guy in red spoke some profound words! Very wise.
