This epidemic is happening in every city across the country. My son was shot and killed 2 1/2 years ago. Not gang related, not drug related. He was set up by people he thought cared about him I think. Trial for the shooter is coming up so I don’t say much about it. Our young men. Our sons, dying and going to prison. I feel every word these families said. The agony is beyond words. His girlfriend called me and my younger son and I went over there to an empty block just to find him unconscious and bleeding. I’ve felt despair, rage, unforgiveness, loneliness, flashbacks, insomnia…it goes on. I hope these people are ready for the consequences of murder. They’re not! They get arrested and worry more about their not guilty pleas. They don’t have guns in prison. It’s heartbreaking. You can grow up in a neighborhood and still make it. We have a choice. They made the wrong choice! Clout chasing! My son and all of these people are gone for nothing! Pray for this lost generation!
I’m listening like if you see this man working feeding his family why not let that be your motivation to want to do the same! Just an excuse to kill someone sad sad sad!!
Trimzby Cartier exactly brother I was thinking the same thing how stupid was that statement! This is a mentality and a choice that's why I can't feel sorry for these fools....these are not black people these are niggas!
it might be the dumbest thing u ever heard and i can kinda feel u...but the reality is thats just how some dudes think when they at they lowest point. in reality, thats not just a black thing thats practically lowkey the american way. even in business "if we aint got and u got, we gon take"...i agree though it is backwards n sad but like they say "is what it is"
The statements about not having jobs available is BS. I served 15 years(17-32 years old) in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. When I was released, I moved back home to Ca and then migrated to Houston. At first lived in North Borough Woods Apt(Greenspoint}, and I was working at the Greenspoint Marriott. From there I worked my way to supervisor and saved money. My spouse at the time and I were rearing our newborn. I worked at the Tubular Steel in Katy and went on to make enough to where we ended up buying a home in The Woodlands TX. Success is a mentality. I have since moved back to San Diego and I am a Pastor who works to change the community. I don't get paid because God called me to do this assignment. My point being, Success is a mind frame. You MUST CHOOSE TO LIVE!!!
First of all thank you for sharing your story yes you are right if a person wants to make it he/she will make it happen. Right here in the great USA I just watch a video's of people that grew up in the USA when they were kids got into trouble there whole live's them went to prison when they got realised straight to the air port and deported back to the country they were born from. What I saw was all bad they didn't fit in a few were sent back to Tonga island stuck living in a hut it brought them back to reality with nothing. The other guy got deported to deep in El Salvador where he got killed two months after he got deported. You can watch the video's on RUclips. Stay blessed and keep on working hope nothing but the best for you and your family.
@richard mccann you got that right I listen to rap music just to hear what they are talking about I was blown away what these kids are listening to and glorifying. I am okay with my 80's on back music.
Imma be real its my be bullshit to you but live in 5thward and find out your self...and you fought for what these pakeha's to posses you from the real Houston have been a war zone USO don't get it messed up
Born & raised in Houston. Dropped outta HS in 10th grade. Served in the Marines and Army for 11 years. Now I’m a ER nurse here. Please stop shooting each other. Edit: One year later and seeing this for the first time. Thanks for the likes. I love Houston. I was born and raised in Alief. To those people doubting me, I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1998. I dropped out of HS in the 10th grade. I went to Tomball junior college. It’s called Lonestar College now. The Marine Corps accepted my GED plus 15 college credits. I have the DD214’s and the medals to prove it. I’m not saying this to convince the people who think they know the military or my story. I’m saying this because I want young men and women to know that they can still make it if they don’t finish HS. It will be hard, but you can do it. God bless. Semper Fi.
Galatians 5:13-26, My brothers and sisters, you were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."
@Vin Gasoline Thats DMT brother. They're brain is releasing a chemical thats gets them high and lets them have a peaceful trip on their way out. doesn't happen to everybody. If you really want things to change, as sad as it is to say, activists need to address this first and foremost before we try and fix anything else. The only way to get regular people to want to help is by addressing their wallets. The drain that street violence weighs on our tax dollars enormous, hospital bills, nobody has insurance, everybody who isn't selling drugs is on government benefits, lack of community owned busniesses. If we can fix the hoods, we can fix America.
The problem is us, I grew up DIRT POOR, never thought of robbing or stealing, went to bed hungry many of nights as a child. I started working at the age of 9, delivering store flyers or returning bottles for money. No father, family on WELFARE. I always worked, and stay out of trouble. It's about the choices in life that you make. I could have join a gang and sold drugs, like some of my friends. I chose another way, kept PRAYING to GOD to help guide me to a BETTER WAY. The first time I PRAY TO GOD, TO NEVER LET ME GO TO BED HUNGRY AGAIN, that was the last time in my life, that I went to bed hungry. As a married father of one, there was a time when my whole house was unemployed, my wife and I, my son and the CAT were all unemployed. GOD MADE SURE MY STOREHOUSE WAS FULL, MY FAMILY HAS LACKED FOR NOTHING. GOD HAS BLESS ME AND MY FAMILY. FROM HARD WORK COMES GREAT BLESSINGS. GOD BLESS.
Praise the Lord, you have the answer! You didn't reject God's calling on your life. It's not about temple, pastor worship. It's about believing in Him and trusting Him. I truly hate this mentality of being from the hood you gotta get it how you live....TF. I'm from the gutta. Lower 9th ward New Orleans. Ain't come from shit, ain't had shit, etc. I was a teenager mother X'2......Went to school, went to college, gotta career, open my own business and my older kids are following in my footsteps (minus the kid part). Them two kids I had...One in the navy, the other is about to graduate college. Cycles can be broken. Period. People have to want better to do better.
@KKKrazy KKKaren unfortunately you're still in New Orleans. Lol. You are 5hrs away and everyone that left for "Katrina" went straight to Houston. You're not missing a thing. I actually live in Slidell now.
@Fish Sandwich Thank you. Its a lot of us though, its just not exposed the way it should be. Even though I grew up poor, I was raised by my parents. Which, they didn't play that "thug" shit. Now I have 4 children. All of which has the same father. My 23 year old is in the Navy, 21 year old graduated college but is at home trying to figure it out. 18 year old just graduated high school, and 16 year old with a year left to do. ALSO, I'm not a grandmother. I thank God for showing me the way.
I watch all kinds of documentaries. The ones with money......big productions, professional narrators, music etc. Without all that, this is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen of our people. Hands down You let the people talk. Let them express their reality. Crisp audio and visual. Well researched with no annoying loud, dramatic and distracting music. Well done.
This was one of the best docs I've seen in a while, and I've seen 1000s. It evoked every range of emotion - anger, angst, hopelessness, sadness, despair, hopefulness, inspiration, informative - I'm ready to mobilize. The brother with the bowtie must be protected at all costs.
I appreciate this documentary and this needs to be seen by everyone that's a minority or from a bad or impoverish area. This is real, and though this wasn't my reality growing up, an I cried alot watching this. It was such a reality pill to swallow I kept having to pull away from it. Great job to the creators and for showing everyone the raw Truth, society would say shame on these black people for this killing robbing and hang banging, but my I was in grief because they won't understand this has become a way of life, and everyone would have an opinion without understanding, what would you do, when you grow up living and seeing this all your life, ans on top of it being in poverty, how do you stop it, especially when nobody would take the time to redirect or grab one by the hand and pull them up, I had no idea it was the bad. And my.heart goes out, I want better for my brothers and def can't stand the Killing of one another or the idea you have to live ready to die, or kill to survive. Tears fill my eyes at the idea. And that the fact there is no change or relief for them no help, and no way to change it, this is almost more deviating as watching what's going on in the Ukraine right now, they deserve better. And so do these brothers that are just trying to live in a world where it's get or be got!
Just because you're from the "hood", it doesn't define who you are nor does it determine your destiny. YOU define who you are and where YOU go. It's not where you come from but where you're going. May their souls rest in peace. My condolences to all of the families who lost someone to gun violence. Guns don't kill people,: hatred, lack of self love, lack of guidance, lack of education, lack of discipline and lack of respect kill people.

These stories, listening to friends & family members talk about their loved ones was not only heart wrenching but seeing these folks through their eyes really slammed the tragedy home. Listening to the moms made me grateful that both my children are safe & still with me. The survivors of shootings telling their stories was sobering. My heart goes out to each friend & family member; I will be praying for Houston. Thank you for sharing your stories, your tragedy & heartbreak.

@No Pill 4 me this is true. African men in 1850 in America were emasculated in different ways. The white man has ALWAYS feared the African man, which is why the methods used during slavery were so brutal. They had to do REAL PSYCHOLOGICAL damage in order to instill fear in the Africans they enslaved. It’s all evil.

The love of money is the root of all evil. If economics issues is the common denominator in all urban communities then it's time to eliminate the need for money. Sounds crazy but indigenous person have got to work together. African people are by nature communal. When their atmosphere is perverted with this industrial worldly substance and the resource and abilities to gain those substances are limited, then what you get is this world of chaos. It's time to study indigenous living. The industrious living doesn't work for impoverished people. Either go to school or grab a tool...whatever the case, it's insane to think there is anyway to not have casualties in the inner cities.
On February 16 of 2019 we loss my nephew Davonte R. White. He was in the car with some of his other friend here in Houston at the corner of West Montgomery and Little York when he and his other friend was shot in the back seat of the vehicle that they were in. After he and his other friend was shot in the back seat of the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle drove him and the other friend to the fire station and dumped them and drove off, my nephew did not survive. If RUclips actually starts putting ads on non-monetized videos by creators who never asked for them, that just goes to show how greedy this corporation can be. This thought is disgusting. RUclips is essentially making free money off small channels and not paying them a single penny. Yes, these are small channels, but since there's so many of them, RUclips will still make a huge profit off of this new policy. I don't care if RUclips hates us now, it must be said by someone. I started to watching these documentaries to help educate myself on something I know nothing about. While growing up my folks had their own struggles ... we were poor like most of us in the flyover states, but I knew I was I safe to go outside & ride my bike. I believe so many people in this country have a strong opinion on shit they have NO idea about. They have NEVER lived in these kinda neighborhoods. This is like the 8th or 9th doc in the last 3 days....so thank you for putting this out. Maybe more people like me who don’t know will take a minute learn & try to understand rather than judge & honestly slander these young folks with no education as to how this could happen. We need BIG changes in this country. As a white woman with a mixed child who raised by parents who taught me to love everyone & accept anyone who loves you back, I pray more people will start reaching out across these lines that have drawn for us & say NO MORE! NOT TODAY! Help each other & love Thy neighbor. NEVER stop educating yourself ... that is where the understanding & change will come from. Peace to these families & the friends. Thank you.

Fuck around and get prescribed some shit that fuck’em up even more now no one wants to deal with’em. Those same kids get in these streets and get their hands on a gun and well u get the picture. When ppl see a family eating, they don’t see the struggle, hard work & sacrifice that produced that food. They just see the reward of hard work. The formula for survival is the same for most of us. It’s irksome to here that “if your eating & I’m not.....) bs because the majority of us struggle to have the things we have. The guy in this film said “they catch felonies” like it’s a cold or they’re victims of the felony. I wanted more than my parents & the ppl in my neighborhood so I studied, worked 2 jobs, went to school & slept 5 hrs a day for 5 yrs. 5 yrs is all it takes! If I can do it, anyone can. They just have to want it. If I sold drugs, the end game wouldn’t be “being a drug dealer”. They’re in love with that fast money without work effort but the trade is the high risks of jail & death. Gansta Rap/gun culture is the tool that a portion of our ppl use to commit self genocide. If we want others to respect us, we have to respect ourselves. What good are Jordan’s, chains & cars when your soul is lost?
You're so correct. I'm glad you used your brain and hard work to better yourself. We all have the opportunity to make it in this country, as long as we have our health.

Hinzel 77 and whoever else this applies to... The easiest thing to do is deny the truth... It's crazy how people deny the truth but stand up for all of the lies... Atleast until they come face-to-face with undeniable power of God to receive the conviction for denying the truth! The world cannot move forward to become a race free and equal place until the problem at hand is solved which is only able to be done by learning our history and figuring out the reason that got us here. A good hearted white person will admit that history and his bad spirited ancestors are the sole reason why black people are so screwed up... For those of you who do not want to admit what the problem and keep the carousel going... Hence there is a judgement for you! You know in your heart that what your people done was totally wrong and to sit here and act like it is okay is only prolonging the healing of this world! Your people are doing exactly what God hates and that is committing sin against his chosen people... this world should be in harmony but instead we have people like you who deny the truth and don't understand why Black America is in the state that is in now.. I repeat... for those of you who do understand what is going on but still choose to act like you don't see it and deny it... you are going to hell and burn for a very long time. As much as it hurts to accept the truth... YOU MUST understand that your people are the reason why not only us as black people are messed up... This problem goes all the way back to when your people killed Christ...the world is messed up because of your people And for those of you who do not repent but know the truth you will go to Hell Without a question of a doubt because the most high God is all of our God just remember that. God hates what you have done to his people and he hates what you have caused this world to come to...
If you think that slavery is the only sole reason why our race is messed up then maybe you should go and pray for understanding... "Inferiority" look that word up... Just a few examples: Schools were good when they were segregated... But since the segregation law was ended and blacks were allowed in they let the schools go to crap and then private schools were put up of course but the blacks couldnt afford it. Even Before that Black people were poor and did not have education's and were thrown in jail for just trying to learn how to read. Also, the genius plan of having a nation of people with no education sobthat they would have to depend on welfare and handouts to survive... But of course there were stipulations to receiving the welfare. Those stipulations were to take the black father out of the home. We all know without a responsible man in the household to give the boy proper guidance... He is likely to become disrepectful, disobedient, definitely emotional, kill each other, disrespect our women because we have not had a man to show us how to treat one. and do all types of other wickedness it comes. The only thing comments like these let me know is that lots of people are still ignorant and need to figure out why things are how they are before speakimg on it because it is deeper than slavery. It goes all the way back to Christ... If you can still feel proud of what your people have done... and it reaches all the way back as far as them killing Christ then you have a real problem and it is something that you must take up with God yourself.
That was a dumb logic “if I see you feeding your family and I can’t feed mine” ni??@ it’s called working for what you need. That’s how you end up dead dipping into somebody else situation.
@@starjunkie2804 yea that happens when our people glorify being street. I’m with the 21st century it’s time to go out and get it the legal way. Feels better not looking over your shoulder. But a lot of us don’t see it that way.
I'm sorry...this has to be one of the most painful docs I've seen in a while. I'm from STL, and the murder rate here is staggering as well. it's been almost 20 years since I permanently left the hood for the burbs; not to be insensitive to others, but I feel blessed and fortunate for that opportunity. I just could not imagine putting the people who care for me through that much pain.
I've been shot. I also lost my only brother due to gun violence. Losing him feels like I have a hole in my soul with a nausea feeling. Hurts every time I think of him. Its like living with a amputated limb. You'll never be the same. After living on earth. We are going to appreciate heaven so much. Gotta keep pushing though.
Being a sociology major and a criminology minor from Atlanta, this documentary was interesting to see. It was also heartbreaking. It's a sad reality out here in many of America's inner cities. Violence is never that far away in these neighborhoods. I do find it interesting however that there were comments about gangs contributing to the violence nowadays and how back in the day, there weren't any gangs in Houston. Though one murder is one too many, the homicide rate has dropped significantly in Houston and in many other cities around the country compared to their peak in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I read that Houston peaked at about 700 homicides back in 1981 which is literally double the amount of what it tends to get today. I hope that the homicides and violent crime continue to decrease. Houston is a great city and doesn't deserve to have this level of violence. The parents, family, friends, and loved ones of those killed don't deserve to experience their pain either...
I just think that this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the many great contributions of the African American community and their culture to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature makes them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real Estate values are fueled by the influx of African Americans into an area due to their caring and respectful nurturing of these communities, an example of all they have acheived by their enthusiasm for self-improvement through hard work and a self-reliant can-do nature. Without their industrious and creative drive we would be poorer as a nation.
This documentary brought tears to my eyes. Pain in my heart. I lost 4 cousins in one summer and I live in a quiet more so small town. We all grew up in St louis surrounded by negativity and drama. Looking out thr window could cost you your life. The fact that we all moved to this small town and I lose them says alot. You never know brothers and sisters. We need to do better. Man this video will forever be in burned in my memory. I'm sorry and my heart is heavy for every last victim. May god have mercy on the killers soul. The Lord knows what to do and retaliation is an endless cycle. Man I'm sorry for everyone in these devilish times. If anyone sees this back me up. Respond. How can we do this to one another.
Not true travel the world and you will see worse black, white or Asian. Seen the slums of the eastern block to the people who live on top of the garbage in the Philippines. Even Italy can be scary I have served or over 20 years in the military (I love my profession of flying). Life is about the choices you make I have friends that lived on park avenue but the drug bug got them, This is just one view look deeper at mans inhumanity to each other.
Arizona Papa very much appreciated I’m at the end of a great career I will miss my people and the missions but it has given me an opportunity to see the world as well. Although our country is not perfect from what I have observed it’s one of the best places on the planet to be. Life is about the choices you make people talk about how hard the ghetto is there are places on this planet where the so called gangster, pimps and hustlers would not last a minute. I was just in Spain and saw a whole group of individuals who live in buildings that reminded me of the Bronx in the 70’s no running water no electricity It looked like a scene from mad max but still they strive to survive. We all need to be happy for what we have not for what we don’t have in this country, and be happy you were born or immigrated here.
Why would someone kill someone else because of jealousy, what do they gain? Ask him how he got there and do the same. It should inspire you not create hate.
Why ask when its easier to take...that’s the mentality they have. And don’t tell me...no ones hiring shit. I work at BK for years to feed my kids. Gotta start somewhere. I rather work hard then to rob, steal or kill someone bc they have it better than me. JEALOUSY & LAZINESS is what it is.
This was so well done, but so painful to watch. My heart hurts for these lost lives- these shattered families.. I cried with these injured and deceased’s loved ones- especially the Mothers. I struggle to find the words to describe my pain. My precious child was murdered in a family community park on a sunny Thursday afternoon just a few miles from our home. I never even imagined my life without him. We didn’t know this guy- we had no problems with anyone. He just wanted to take a life- “catch a body”. That murderer killed my whole family that day. And for what? So he could brag about it on SC. I will never understand this. The loved ones- the ones who have lost their son, bro, classmate, sister, cousin, neighbor, friend… they are the brave victims, and I admire them for sharing their pain in this documentary. It’s so poignant, and powerful. Thank you, and May God bless you and yours richly.
Oh my God..... This is REAL. I watched this and i was completely moved. I realized that as a black male who has even been shot that I can relate to this over and over again. I also realized that there are many more like me in every black neighborhood Its not where you are from but its where you at. Now at 48 years old I can honestly say that as a youth in my era I seen this coming. I was lucky enough to have a father to point these things out to me. I also can see that no Republican nor Democrat did a damn thing about it ! They seen the crack epidemic chew away at generations , they seen young fathers who were first time felons get sentences beyond measurable amounts and Instead of producing counseling programs they locked them up to produced more "license plates" for the mass production of new cars which sent ford and GM out on their asses. to sum it up .... " American greed has no boundaries". My country of which i served has morphed into a GREED DEMON who will resort to devouring itself when the lust of wanting more arises. Just look around. I have PTSD. NO , not from serving in the Marines but from living in America as a black man experiencing what i've experienced. From going to work at jobs where you know that you are not welcomed, From looking at the news and seeing another person shot who has the same complexion as mines, from hoping that the police won't shoot me on a routine traffic stop, going to these funerals and hearing the screams of hurting mothers and watching strong men of faith weep with helpless looks on their faces. i remember a congresswoman from California named Maxine Waters tried to warn us about the poisonous lyrics that was being placed into "urban" music but she was called a hater in so many ways. Now look..... Is your son in his early 20's ? is his pants falling off of his ass ? Is he "on the block?" or where's your daughter right now ? It hurts me .... All of these "kids" in this documentary was good kids gone too soon. Yeah some appeared mischievous but that was due to lack of role models being present. Look , we see what's happening now and its up to us to fix it. As a Marine its easy to get on a rooftop with a snipers rifle and put dope on the scope about a mile out and start pickin off these rotten apples who"s destroying our families, but if i did that I'd be no better than them cause they don"t know better. Even though some of these young black men are serial killers. I KNOW. May God be with each of you through our generations of mourning. may love and peace be with you.

Unfortunately, kids grow up to be different things. You can raise all 5 of your children the same way and one is gonna grow up to be a successful person, one might be a drug dealer, one might be a gang leader, one my end up going to prison, etc. It’s unfortunate that children probably raised in a good household go down these roads.

In all fairness to the man who said the "If I can't feed my family and this man can feed his, one of us gotta go." line - they actually show more of the context behind what he's saying just before he says it again at 11:00 . He was explaining of the jealous mind state a person can go through when he said that, as he was saying "thats when the guns come out". All of this is a cycle and just like the single mother thing, catching the felonies early out of desperation and lack of guidance, then as adults seeing the ones who are able to still find "street employment" from a place of envy and they shoot and kill for that amongst other things because its not the same as robbing an innocent civilian or liquor store etc. I do think this is a case where they shouldn't have used that part of the quote for the begging because it made the guy seem ignorant when in fact his simply just describing jealousy and all the evil it can do as he's seen through his own eyes.
In these documentaries things are often taken out of context back clipping the footage but at the end of the day survival of the fittest (mind/body/hustle)

That hasn't been the case. I get told to act as a human shield during protests that are likely to devolve into riots by people who are way more educated and privileged than I could ever dream of. I grew up in the juvenile justice system, I have what is essentially a 9th grade education, yet I have made it farther than anyone else around here in my fight for police reform. “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” - Albert Einstein. A great quote to live by.
Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."

problem is that we live in world that conflates success with value, so a lot of people really don't know the difference.

I wanted more than my parents & the ppl in my neighborhood so I studied, worked 2 jobs, went to school & slept 5 hrs a day for 5 yrs. 5 yrs is all it takes! If I can do it, anyone can.
Hinzel 77 if you did not read the whole text that is your loss of knowledge from the truth...

And this is all just third ward n a lil bit of southwest

I KNOW.
May God be with each of you through our generations of mourning. may love and peace be with you.
im 38 and back in 95 my dad went to jail for attempted murder and was locked up for 20 years so i used to carry a 22 revolver and a sawed off 12 gauge but i put all that shit behind me
