I grew up in Third Ward and to this day it's a part of my very Fiber. I will never forget the lessons and since of responsibility that I received from my Elders. who lived and worked in the Community. I left in 1986 to explore the world and I can honestly say that I was well prepared for the experience. So shout out to those Elders who are still alive and thank you for your Love and Insight
I was born in Houston in 1959. I am white. My parents taught us one of the lessons by Martin Luther King. "Don't you judge anyone by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." I never understood racism, cringed when I heard the "N" word from people I knew. I would have gotten my butt whipped if I ever disrespected anyone for their color or nationality. I thank God for that every single day. Sadly, my upbringing was most definitely the exception, not the rule.
I grew up during forced school integration. Black kids were taken from their neighborhood high schools and bussed to white schools. They were not happy about that. I really don't blame them, but it caused a lot of problems. There was plenty of racism from all ethnic groups and unfortunately still is.
I was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1942. It's right down the street from 'the ward.' When I graduated from university in 1965, i drove over to 3rd ward one Saturday night looking for a jazz band to sit in with. I found The Continental Club, went in and made my way to the bandstand. I was met by Charles 'Spooky' Dancey, (organ) Horace Grigsby, (vocals) and Ronnie Wynn (drums.) They welcomed me up and i played a couple of sets with them. The next day Spooky called and hired me on to work with him that night. I worked with them until Spooky's demise four years later. That experience was really valuable in shaping my musical career. I got to play with topflight musicians that i met through Spooky, both in Houston and Los Angeles, where i spent the summer in 1968. I'm sure the ward has changed, but I fondly remember it as the place where my life-long musical experience was shaped and formulated.
The music scene was amazing in the Wards from that time and back! So much history people don't know-or care to know about! Much published about the musical history and well worth the time learning about.
I've lived in 3rd ward for 35 years now and I can honestly say this video was very informative and moving. Excellent video, a couple of days ago I was downtown and decided that I wanted to eat at Sparkles on Dowling. I was eastbound on Texas Ave. and turned on to what I thought was Dowling, I noticed the street sign read Emancipation, so the street has already been changed. I didn't know that the street was originally named after Confederate Richard Dowling. I grew in southwest Houston and attended Richard "Dick" Dowling Jr. High. They changed the name of the school.
Interesting, but when you talk about economic setbacks, please look at how the government "intervention" has not helped minorities. The black community had a higher economic standard in the 1940s than they do now. The reason? Families stayed together, everyone knows a two income family will be more well off than a single income family. The government replaced the father in many cases and have kept women poor and made the incarceration rate for men go up. Read Thomas Sowell for more information on this.

I am white & grew up in Denver Harbor across I10 from 5th ward. I worked at the Lockwood Bank in the 5th & ate at the Lockwood Inn since I was a kid. I always felt safe because blacks & whites had good relations. Houston was a nice place back in the '60s but it's no place for a retired senior now. Too crowded, terrible traffic, claustrophobic. 3rd Ward is a disaster. When I was in college I did Amazon Flex deliveries and half the time I’d get shifts delivering to 3rd Ward and it was always scary. Lots of aggressive homeless, addicts, gangs and loose dogs. Always saw police around yellow tape houses and lots of fighting among the locals. You’d be crazy to go to the park, restaurant or even park your car and go for a run down the street. It’s dangerous there.
@@pokeypigg3931 why would anyone even go to the 3rd ward for. It’s a complete dump but them white folks coming in and cleaning it up and doing what the blacks didn’t do.

Correction: The city of Houston gov was notified numerous times at city hall in 1998 by a single houstonian, That Dick Dowling's terrible historic past and name should be removed ,at the time anise parker sat as a council member under Mayor Lee p.brown, all though the city minutes clearly show houstonian Joshua Ben Bullard was the sole Individual to contest Dowling and first Individual in Houston history to contest the issue of Dowlings confederate affiliation with city government , twenty years later both Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston chronicle would choose to bury these historical city facts with no mention of Joshua Bullards place in the historical record ,a houstonian with a forward vision ahead of his Time, it would take the City of Houston twenty years to implement Bullard demands .
@Mike Wilson who gives a fuck. I still got my white last name. Yall act like just confederates stepped on black people necks. Removing Dowling from Third Ward erases history fool.
Very informative video. I've lived just outside of what's considered Houston for about 2 years, but have tried to learn more about the city's history, as east and south of downtown is still very unfamiliar to me. I've heard a lot of people refer to places like Third Ward as "ghetto", but always figured that wasn't a fair critique. I've driven around Third Ward and other areas trying to get a better understanding of what they're like, and it's unfortunate how impoverished some areas are. UofH looks very nice, and there are some areas that seem to be doing quite well. I hope it can continue to improve and thrive. Despite it's problems, I do like Houston and want it to prosper.
The 3rd was a black hub for economic growth. After segregation like many cities blacks moved to be in diverse neighborhoods. Drugs and crime riddled the area and the place went down. Houston only has a black population of 25%. Yes blacks make up 1/4 of the population. The influx of immigration from Latin,Asian, African and Middle Eastern countries shifted the population. Many blacks moved to the outskirts, other cities or left the state all together. By 2050 Houston is projected to be 10% black. Black night clubs, restaurants, and businesses in general have all but disappeared. I'm talking about very prominent places because there are many black businesses but not thriving like Atlanta, New Orleans, Charlotte,Jackson and even Dallas. The black neighborhoods, culture and growth has pretty much vanished.
census 2020 shows the black population in inner-city houston has indeed been steadily falling, they compromise 22% of the population now. It does show that they have been growing in the suburbs/outskirts of the city.
SOUNDS LIKE SEGREGATION WAS THE KEY. EVERYONE HAS THEY'RE OWN AND THRIVED. SAD OUTCOME. HOPEFULLY THINGS CHANGE MORE. STAY SAFE AND BLESSED BEAUTIFUL FAMILIES 💕🙏🌹🫂🥲
Alot of what was said is true only to a point. Most is not race but a culture thing. Blacks can go to a rich school with new books. Just like they can graduate and become whatever they want and be stable. But also they can work at McDonald's if they choose.... and well..we'll... they chose just like any race. And ignorance is bliss in BLM movement. They have even screwed their own people and chapters over. It's about time to stop making excuses and holding yourselves back and move on and always remember the history but learn from it and become better. Don't use it as a crutch
There is a lot of incorrect information and some very important facts left out. Third ward is bounded by main street up to buffalo bayou around to Macgregor. Before U.S. 59 came through there, Jews and blacks both lived there with a few Italian families mostly west of Hamilton street. The stores Wiengartens was owned by Jews. These socalled row houses where built as temp housing for the railroad workers that were close to the track that ran from north of I45 along where 288 out to Sugarland and a song was made named after the train that passed by the central Prison in Sugar land where Lead Belly Blake made the song midnight speacial.

My mother grew up in the 3rd Ward in the 50's & 60's. She said it was a beautiful neighborhood, that is until integration started. Once that happened, crime rates and violence shot up. They moved to Galveston by the late 60's, to get away from it. She was talking with a woman a couple years ago that was from the 3rd Ward, and asked whatever happened to such n such who had that store. The lady replied, "oh they robbed and killed him years ago". And that's exactly why they left.
Hello Sarah, Can you tell me more about this class. I am looking to get a similar video for Third Ward made. You seem to have a lot of content already, would you be interested in a collaboration or fee for service?
Prior to the well fair programs if the LBJ administration and the introduction of crack in the 80's the wards (and especially 3rd ward) had a thriving economic and social community. It was a self sustaining economic powerhouse with opportunities. Many buildings and houses are still standing and reflect the prosperity of that time. It was a good time to live for most everyone in Houston of all races. This is well documented in books and publications and well worth the time to research. Really nice presentation and informative video.
I appreciate the inclusion of the bar graph at 9:12 but it has no source listed, no individual job specified nor year indicated. The following graph at 9:26 shows 2% of 75 million in the white collar workforce whom qualify for healthcare, not jobs in 2017... (Restless Bandit looks for candidates eligible for healthcare, not labor statitics)
I live in Houston and ride thru third ward every day. Their tearing it down, building thousands of condos trying to move the white folks back in. This is a whole ad. A fuckin promo video
Making Houston a safe and prosperous city will require a massive international military operation with artillery, napalm, and war crimes no cap. It'd be akin to the US in Iraq back in the day lol

3rd ward is so convinient, close to downtown, not too far from woodlands, if not for the drugs and crimes and ignant people that live there it would be perfect
Complete opposite side of the metro than the The Woodlands.
Black Star far from the Woodlands
Better find you another "convenient" neighborhood brother and a new map. Maybe closer to "The Hoodlands".
@Black Star
Lol how did you put 3rd ward and the Woodlands together? You might as well be talking about California and New York.
Why would you want to go to the woodlands? A bunch of racist uptight people.... it’s literally like 1-2 hrs away super far away
I was born in Houston Texas in 1966 3rd ward was home until I left
No one’s going to say anything about the still shot of the Grape Shasta can? 🤔
Lovely story of progress , community, and diversity.
nice video. i lived in HOUSTON and enjoyed its rich history. 3rd ward should always be preserved. being white we should never forget our past and never repeat it. but allow our future generations of our country to remember as well. we must never forget. sincerely, a damn Yankee...peace.
Did the migration from N.O. after hurricane Katrina have any effect on Third Ward? I understand a lot of folks moved from there to Houston, but don't know if they went to Third Ward.
I sure miss the old Houston.
Lockwood Inn was one of a kind!!
Denver harbor is Hispanic now.
Coming from someone who grew up in houston Third Ward was only known as a hood
I’m going to move here one day, the homes seem nice and it’s close to an ER (i’m working to be in the medical field) I can’t wait to live in 3rd ward
Drugs and gangs and bad parents have nothing to do with it , huh
and who infested 3rd ward with drugs?

Learn to take responsibility Rather than excuses...
Nobody poured it down their throat
In some cases it was poured down their throats.....This country should take responsibility without being forced to for its role in systematic oppression. And btw 🖕🏿you and the original commenter. I typed that with a smile on my face!
Todd Guillory u say take responsibility but want to ignore those responsible for importing drugs into this communities.

Yep still remember my address all though it not there any more mom made me memorize it 2111R2 Live Oak
Yeah, it's a total war zone. I live around the Houston area and haven't been through 3rd ward in many years. I avoid it like the plague.
@@WZPXZMDQRGTHEFYOPBMLNSHOPJBOJT STAY YOUR SCARY ASS OUT OF THE ""3RD"!!!!!

@@pokeypigg3931 why would anyone even go to the 3rd ward for. It’s a complete dump but them white folks coming in and cleaning it up and doing what the blacks didn’t do.
You're not showing the other side of 3rd ward. It's a huge SHITHOLE. Lots of drugs and violence. you showed a "rosy" view. I grew up in 2nd ward
The Jason's lyric music playing in the background. That was made in 3rd ward too. Dowling and live oak emancipation park and other places in houston. Love my city
Jason's Lyric was filmed in the 4th Ward.
Brian Lohse ralston liquor store and the blue store was on Dowling and Live oak in 3rd ward. I lived right down the street from there in a house across from wolfs department store/pawnshop. Our house was torn down in 08. I’m sure it wasn’t fully filmed in third ward but most scenes were. The carnival scene was at emancipation park.

When I left south La. I ended up 3rd ward Southmore & Scott great experience
I love the south, it's so beautiful!
Texas isn't technically the South. It's Texas.
Maggie Grace Rasor it's the south like it or not.
It may be considered Southwest, however, it has all the makings of a southern state.
@@maggie2sticks717Texas was, is, and always will be southern.
@@maggie2sticks717 Texas is the South.... and no, contrary to what Thomas Sowell brainwashed you to believe, poverty in the black community is not all because of the democrats.... or republicans. I have seen far worse racism in Chicago than Houston, but there is and had been racism in Texas.... and funding differences as well.
Wolf's is not black owned. Being an octogenarian I recall Dowling being a street loaded with black owned businesses.
I remember Wolf’s dept store being owned by a Jewish family.
There was also another local dept store called Ruebenstein’s in 3rd Ward owned by a Jewish family as well.
Wolfs Pawn shop is no longer there. It has been replaced by a black owned gym and the El Dorado Ballroom is being renovated. Dowling has officially been renamed Emancipation Street.
Great stuff
Thank you!
Nice documentary love from the UK
I lived in the big green house/dentistry right across from wolf's pawnshop. 2718 Dowling Street
Despite it's problems, I do like Houston and want it to prosper.
nice documentary
My people we from Matagorda tx but I was born at Riverside hospital in 3 ward , it was a clinic before it shut down
I like the back of the bus the fire exits in the back
The 3rd was a black hub for economic growth.
LadyLioness Hispanics are know owning beauty supply stores in the black communities.
LadyMikey35 I don't know about owning in Houston but they are hired to run them by Asians I see.
C caymer yep
census 2020 shows the black population in inner-city houston has indeed been steadily falling, they compromise 22% of the population now.
Great video, very informative
Had some high times back behind the Brown Cab Co back in the day ! Shout out to Nino, you still alive ?

That eldorado needs to be renovated into a new music venue
you have to do a Northside of houston documentary that's where I'm from
I love you video you do it so well

Hello Sarah, Can you tell me more about this class. I am looking to get a similar video for Third Ward made. You seem to have a lot of content already, would you be interested in a collaboration or fee for service?
Thanks glad to know alittle about where im from houston yellowstone mlk

Keep on preaching and reliving racism ,I can say a lot about my Hispanic community being mistreated but would rather succeed and show what hard work can do
Yeah so when Jews and history books teach about the Holocaust the Jewish people are “preaching and reliving racism” and not trying to succeed and work hard? Silly.
