I'm not sure it's so common anymore but it was traditional from colonial times through the 70s, especially in old school NYC dinners (where it is often still available upon request). You can see it depicted in Taxi Driver.
What I like about Beryl's videos is she is willing to try eating the craziest shit people recommend to her. She keeps an open mind and makes me expand beyond my own food phobias.
A sandwich cafe I used to go to in England had a signature sandwich called the 'chickbanchut' - chicken, banana and mango chutney. Unexpectedly but ABSOLUTELY delicious!!
In SE Asia we like to eat fired battered bananas which are so sweet, savoury and crunchy so I'm not surprised that bananas were paired with grilled cheese in this video.
Best grilled cheese I have ever had was apple, Brie and arugula on ciabatta bread. Apple in a grilled cheese is amazing (and totally unexpected for me).
If I may suggest; Brie en Croute. It’s a wheel Of Brie topped with a mixture then wrapped in puff pastry. In my opinion the best mixture is an apple compote. I have had it with pecans and without. But the best apples used in my opinion should be a crisp tart apple, and I prefer it with still a small bite to the apples. Not completely softened, for brightness and texture. Then wrap in a puff pastry and egg wash and bake until the Brie will be melted completely. Slice and serve with anything from crackers, fruit, crudités, brioche toast points… or a fork and knife lol.
I have always been experimental with food... and have always wondered what people with other cultures eat. Thanks to you I don't only have exposure to food of different places but also have ample of recipes to be tried in my kitchen.
My mom made us grilled cheese sandwiches, when me and my brother were very small, so my grandma always toasts those very quickly to serve us. This video brings back so many memories. I'm going to try these with mom. Thank you Beryl ❤️
My favorite summer grilled cheese has unexpected fruit too. Thinly-sliced ham, fresh nectarine, and fresh mozzarella with a little Dijon mustard. Summer because the nectarines need to be ripe and sweet, not mealy and blah. The salty/sweet combo is delicious.
You know, one of my favorite things about your channel is that you are introducing us to not only new ingredients but also new uses for old ingredients.
I think what I find most interesting about this assortment of recipes is that 4 out of the 5 used sweet ingredients - apples, hot honey, brown sugar, bananas. I'm not usually looking for sweetness when I make a grilled cheese, but that's an interesting take on things, and I can see how that might work.
I can not believe how delicious garlic and honey combo is. Sometimes I make spread of honey with garlic purée with some sea salt. It is so good it is addictive.
I’m such a sucker for a grilled cheese. Maybe bc it’s the first thing I started to cook as a latch key kid and from the start with the apple pie grilled cheese I knew it was going to be a great one. Geese Beryl you’ve helped make us a great community that’s so well fed both with food and the joy of sharing. Thanks for that.
Why is it great? "Because it has an apple in it." I love how he casually establishes that it's just universally accepted that an apple makes everything better. XD
Turns out necessity is the mother of invention, it was really interesting to see the different combos born out of people's different needs and experiences
My dad used to make me a grilled cheese with cinnamon and sugar. Somehow it works really well together and I eat them as an adult some times just for the comfort.
Pineapple jam and pickled red jalapeños in a grilled cheese made with Amul cheese slices (at least 2) is unfairly good. Add some green chillies chopped fine as well if you want more of a kick.
You know what, I was in hospital all weekend after surgery and this channel is amazing. Just great to see people from around the world sharing ideas. All with love. No hate. No politics. Just awesome thanks. And of course I have subscribed.
on the topic of chips in grilled cheese sandwiches, i just recently discovered nacho grilled cheese with tortilla chips & whatever you like to put on nachos. it’s pretty dang good.
My mother (fan of the most bizarre food combos) used to make me banana sandwiches! Toasted rye bread, butter, mild cheese slices and banana slices on top! If I was feeling down, she’d add honey (always UNDER the cheese to prevent stickiness), too. Works amazingly!
I just made the Apple Grilled Cheese and you did not exaggerate at all. It was SO delicious! It doesn't even taste "interesting-good" like some sort of novelty food but rather like a dish that always was supposed to be prepared this way. I think one of the reasons why it works so well is that the apples kind of taste like how reaaaally great, very ripe and kind of sweet tomatoes should taste like (instead of the bland ones we get at grocery stores most of the time). Btw: I followed your suggestion and used cheddar cheese. Delish! Btw 2: It seems like the cinnamon is missing from the recipe in the video description and god forbid someone would forget putting it in. :D
Beryl platforming people of diaspora and immigration is so important! Nationality comes with its complexities and nuances and I’m so grateful that is represented in your content
I love how all these recipes are so simple and dont take that part away from grilled cheese, of it being a quick and easy thing to make, but add so much differnt flavor palettes and elevate them so much :))) thanks for sharing
My husband makes amazing grilled cheese sandwiches! No matter what’s going into it (apples, spinach, pickles, whatever + cheese), he swears by toasting the bread first, before assembling the sandwich, and then making it on our panini press. No more soggy grilled cheese!
i cant remember if youve always done it this way, but I love seeing the videos of the recipe creators telling their story. it just gives so much to the food is comfort, family & culture idea!
The apple sandwich sounds amazing!! I'm definitely trying that. Also, Justin! is that your apple-grilled-cheese ART in the background of your video? I love it!
Update: I failed my first try (as I have less experience with making grilled cheese in general, and I also left out an ingredient…big mistake.). Just sat down to eat Try #2 following the restore exactly and YES, this is everything I’d hoped for! So good! I stewed the apples a little less time than before too-I still like a tiny bit of bite and texture variation. I am in love.
Cara with the Kimchi Panino here! Thank you so much for including me in this awesome video, Beryl. Can't wait to try all these grilled cheese recipes :)
Just finished watching your back catalogue of videos. You are truly a treasure ❤️ I love how you have introduced me to so many new foods and I love watching peoples videos from across the world. Now I am all up-to-date, and have loads of new recipes to try out. Love cheese toastiest, great episode xx
i love grilled cheese so much 😭 my faves are basic grilled cheese dunked in tomato soup (sometimes i add hot mustard to the grilled cheese), and my fancier, more time-consuming fave is bacon+brie+fig jam. you just cook the bacon to your preferred level of crispiness and slice the cold brie while the bacon cooks. tossing the brie into the freezer for 20 or 30 minutes beforehand can help you get cleaner slices as it's such a soft cheese, but i normally don't think that far ahead. i also cut off all the rind on the brie because i hate the texture, but it's edible so that level of persnickitiness is not necessary. after the bacon is done, pour off most of the grease but leave a bit in the pan. layer the bacon and brie onto the sandwich and spread a generous amount of fig jam on one side of the bread, then toast in the dregs of the bacon grease. it is SO GOOD. pork goes well with a lot of different fruits so you could switch up the fig jam for many different jams, and if you wanted something less mild/creamy and more savory, you could swap the brie out for a more assertive cheese. this grilled cheese is sweet and savory and creamy and crunchy and very indulgent. when i've been less lazy i have also added caramelized onions, which were good with it as well! i can't wait for there to be more comments so i can scroll through and find other people sharing their fave grilled cheese variations ♥😭
ok - i was intrigued - we watched this episode and went to the store yesterday and got more kimchi. Today's lunch was the Kimchi Grilled panino and we also did a couple of just ham and havarti and a turkey and cheddar for the non adventurous family members. I loved the Kimchi one - Wish I'd made just those! So good. Thank you for sharing and Inspiring us!
I do make an open grilled banana with Irish vintage cheddar. As the cheese is stronger it cuts the sweetness more. Pear, bacon and cheddar work as a sandwich too.
these look so good! grilled sandwiches are so great sometimes ill even grill a peanut better and jelly. any grilled sandwich with peanut butter is special bc the peanut butter melts and gets so good. another favorite when im feeling lazy is white bread with butter and honey applied to it before cooking it in a pan, it soaks into the bread so well and the honey gets a bits sticky and caramelized...so simple and soooo good. a little spice/salt on that one is 🔥🔥🔥 too.
First let me say, I was excited soon as I saw you did a grill cheese segment. I LOOOVE grill cheese. And, I agree that the apple pie grill cheese is a must try. I actually want to try them all. I'm telling you, thanks to your channel, I am getting adventurous...Lol well, adventurous for me anyway....small steps.....LOL Thank you for creating and doing this type of content. It's so very appreciated. Arlene
I love chips in sandwiches, especially tuna sandwiches. Now, I must try the chips on grilled cheese, and definitely need to use the sour cream & onion version. Yes, the weekend for sure.
Hot honey and chilli flakes are the best toppings for a grilled cheese! That said, Beryl I know you’re in NYC so please go to the Chelsea Market and have the Sal E Pepe grilled cheese from Saxelby Cheesemongers. Best grilled cheese of my life, has haunted me for years since i no longer live there.
Banana sandwich, toast is super good. In my country we only used shredded cheese, condensed milk, and banana. Sometimes we also add chocolate sprinkles.
Butter on the outside of the bread first, cheese on the inside, then crisp up the bread so it's nice and toasty, cheese melted inside. My favorite cheeses for grilled cheese are either a sharp cheddar or an American cheese-- don't come at me. Processed cheese has its place, and grilled cheese is one 😆
@@bodyofhope You can also use mayo on the outside in lieu of butter. Also, "American" cheese is just a bunch of cheese scraps melted into a cheese sauce, mixed with gelatin, and then chilled to firm up, all things you can easily do at home with any cheese you want.
I LOVE bananas on grilled cheese! I feel like they belong there. Here in Brazil it’s common to have bananas along with salty food like beans, rice, etc. it’s so yummy! Btw I love your videos beryl ♥️
Combining cheese and banana seems to make sense to me. Maybe you should try the variation including cooked or baked ham. Several years ago I even came across a recipe in which a banana was wrapped in a slice of cheese and a slice of cooked (or baked) ham and then grilled (with a little bit of butter) in a pan, which at that time was popular as a quick snack. I would suggest using a banana which is barely ripe for this purpose so that it still has some earthy flavours, with more sweetness being developed when it is being grilled.
The minute the apple grilled cheese came up I'm like yep that's gonna be a Midwest recipe. Such a classic. I loved his grilled cheese painting in the back too.
I used to have apple and cheese sandwiches all the time ❤️ its so good with sliced apple, ham or turkey or something, slice of swiss or gouda or whatever you like, sweet dijon mustard, mayonaise and arugula 💚 yummm
my favorite grilled cheese is rye bread, homemade basil pesto, chili infused honey, mozzarella, parmesan, and garlic, cooked is lots of butter... its divine
I love a fancy grilled cheese with some fruit or veg or other additions and expensive cheeses. That said I also love just your basic American cheese on white bread dipped in some tomato soup on a cold day.
i’ve visited serbia for about one month and i had to confirm that serbian food was pretty friendly with southeast asian tongue like me. i think besides the grilled cheese sandwich you must try their chili paste, it was really spicy that even asian like me can’t handle
Beryl playing tricks on us, I saw grill marks on first sandwich and said oohh that looks nice, went back to see how that happened in a pan, and it wasn't the same sandwich, I feel so betrayed, lmao
Oh I have one of these that I make all the time. It's best with goat cheese, but cream cheese will do in a pinch. Made like regular grilled cheese, but put down a layer of goat cheese, a light spread of honey and a light spread of sriracha. Thinly sliced figs are optional but delicious.
Jam & cream cheese toasties are amazing for breakfast or a light afternoon tea. Also, a toastie with aged Caerphilly cheese, bacon / fake-con & sautéed leeks is #chefskiss 🏴
Cheese and kimchi is an amaaazing combo, my roommate and i used to make quesadillas with cheese, garlic mayo, and kimchi just cause we didn’t have a lot of food in our fridge. Adding caramelized onions and mushrooms is great too if you have them and wanna make it more substantial
We finally have a recipe from Serbia! I was hoping for something traditional, but I love this mix as well. Thank you Jovana for representing Serbia in this wonderful food show 🥰
So Beryl, what's the story behind the change in the apple/cheese sandwich from completely browned bread on a regular pan surface during prep, to the grill marks on the one you are eating? Inquiring minds want to know!
I can absolutely understand adding apple to a grilled cheese. It's like preparing a hot apple pie filling and putting that on top of a blintz. Delicious!
Actually this is not how we commonly make grill cheese sandwich in India because when it comes to India, there are alots of flavours and masalas going one so this is not how exactly we make he just gave his own recipe i guess. In case you want to try here's the recipe:- 1.Boil the potatoes and smash them 2.Heat up some oil put some cumin seeds mustard seeds and curry leaves 3.add your boiled potatoes 4.Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, dried mango powder, garam masala, green chillies to make it extra spicy and salt into your mixture (each and every masala is as per your taste just put how much you like) 5.Turn off the heat and mix everything up 6.take your bread apply generous amount of butter, add green chutney, add thick layer of your mixture you made, add alot of cheddar cheese and a cheese slice and close it with another bread with chutney on it and grill it in a griller 7.Top it up with some butter and thin sev(optional) And you're done! This is the classic way and we call it as Masala cheese grill sandwich You must try!
I’ve been making grilled banana-cheese sandwiches for a long time & my sister never even knew there’s 🍌 in them until recently when she saw me making them 😆
This one I will be taking tips from. The apple-cinnamon one sounds great! But the garlic while grilling! I have tossed in some pickle juice when it's almost done grilling before though because I like the pairing with pickles. As for the banana - I once had a pasta alfredo from a restaurant that was super good and it was unique (to me) because it had banana and grapes in it. I made it myself at home and the trick is to not toss in the bananas until almost done or the banana will melt too much into the sauce.
I thought putting bananas in grilled cheese sandwiches was a quirk of my family 🤣 Me being German it seems to really be a german thing. I swap paprika for curry powder though. Takes me back to childhood, thanks for reminding me! 😊
I LOVE LOVE LOVE putting chips on my sammies too! I love making a turkey, cheese, and Dorito sandwich, it reminds me of summer time since that was always our easy beach snacks heh
Hey better late than never right? Lol I’ve always had a weird thing about condiments as a kid, I didn’t use mayo, mustard, ketchup, etc. I hated the smell and couldn’t get passed it; so adding chips was huge for me too, since everything was always plain heh
After living my entire life in India I can confidently say that I have never ever in my life heard of the Indian cheese sandwich mentioned in the video.
I like to do my cheese sandwich either really simple with just cheese or I make a rendition of a Flammkuchen (a type of tarte, I guess). This includes spreading Creme fraîche on the Toast (or whatever is on hand), add pear slices, Honey and some kind of feta cheese and salt and pepper. The original recipe demands a very thin dough, which is stupidly easy to make, but I am usually not able to make it thin enough, so that is how I fix my cravings.
I have thrown in stir fried kimchi into my toasts and it just works, I’ve even used in burgers and hot dogs. Stir fried kimchi is just tasty. Banana in a cheese toast! We already had banana in pizza, this should be interesting.
Beryl! I’m so glad you liked the sandwich! Super honored to be a part of this and appreciate all the kind comments.
I don’t know what I like more the sandwich compliments or the painting comments! I much appreciate these kind corners of the internet
Omgggg yesss justin!!! Your sandwich 🤩🤩thank you for sharing with all of us!!
Omg the sandwich && the painting...😍
Just hearing your description of it I was all "oh man, that sounds perfect"! Well done, sir.

My town has a event once each year called the “Grilled Cheese Experience”, where each February dozens of restaurants around town add a grilled cheese to their menu for the whole month. Last year in my Italian town they did a similar thing with polenta around Carnival (polenta is the traditional Carnival dish in the North)
Sounds heavenly
I want to go to there
Apple pie and cheddar cheese is a common pairing in the US? Gonna have to try that!
Edit: Ahhhh you made the Maggi Hot & Sweet look so good. I should’ve grabbed a bottle when I was in nyc with you!
I'm not sure it's so common anymore but it was traditional from colonial times through the 70s, especially in old school NYC dinners (where it is often still available upon request). You can see it depicted in Taxi Driver.
Roy Rogers Restaurants used to serve Apple Cheese Crisp too
Hi Lisa 😀... Can I give u a suggestion for day 5 or 6 of letting us pick ur meals????
In the UK, apple pie and Wensleydale cheese is more traditional, but try it with a good aged cheddar, and you won't be disappointed 🙂
As my mom used to say... "Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze" We're Canadian, though.

Ghosts + Sandwiches = Perfect For A Cold Day
Umm no ghosts please
In South Africa we have a bacon, banana and cheddar cheese toasted sandwich. That's a pretty decent combo. Banana and cheese does work.
Not to mention the bacon and banana pizza.
Oohh yeah, Im south African and this is are one of my favorite combos!
Bacon goes with every sandwich...
In SE Asia we like to eat fired battered bananas which are so sweet, savoury and crunchy so I'm not surprised that bananas were paired with grilled cheese in this video.
That sounds weird but amazing. I had banana on my toast the other day and didn't think to add cheese, but bacon is completely inspired
Best grilled cheese I have ever had was apple, Brie and arugula on ciabatta bread. Apple in a grilled cheese is amazing (and totally unexpected for me).

If I may suggest; Brie en Croute. It’s a wheel

Next time, try adding fig and prosciutto … and voila ❣️
I grew up with sharp cheddar slices put on hot apple pie. I understand. It is gorgeous.
Yep! I do apples on grilled cheese all the time. throw some fig jam in here as well - very yummy.
The apple one immediately grabbed my kiddo’s attention so now we’re making grilled cheese for breakfast! 🙌🏼
Looks so good. How was it?
I need more cheese next time the other flavors overpowered it a bit but very very tasty!!

I'm still recovering from craving oats all week from the oats episode... I don't think I'll survive craving so much grilled cheese

I use your videos for ideas to make cheap food because I'm broke, thank you. Rice and toast videos are the best.
Sourdough, or light rye in a pinch, are the best breads for grilled cheese. Much better texture when grilled than anything else.
Both good choices, but I also like butterbread and potato bread for grilled cheese.

Beryl, you should try putting hummus in your grilled cheese! It makes it super creamy and adds some protein and flavor
Oh my god why have I never thought of this!! I love grilled cheeses and I love hummus
I do this too as a substitute for cream cheese or butter, it works!!
I feel like kimchi would go great in this.

Oooo ok!!
Hot honey is perfect on pizza
Banana sandwich, toast is super good. In my country we only used shredded cheese, condensed milk, and banana. Sometimes we also add chocolate sprinkles.
I once did a 'cheese toastie crawl' where a company paid me to eat five toasties from five different places in one day.
The close up shade on rajats hiking shoes! Chefs kiss 🤌🏾🤌🏾
Banana sandwiches are (or were when I was young) very popular in England. I have mine with Marmite, my mouth is watering just writing this!!!
Banana on pizza is literally the best thing ever. I'm not a big fan of bananas on their own; but when you put them on pizza?? It's soooo good!
I've never had a grilled cheese before, but I really want to try that apple one.
Seems like a great combo!
You should not miss on grilled cheese sandwiches. Unbelievably delicious and the options are endless.
What? All you need is a few slices of bread and a few slices of cheese and you can fix that today LOL
Banana toasted sandwiches/sandwiches/toast with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top, no cheese, is incredible!
I would suggest using a banana which is barely ripe for this purpose so that it still has some earthy flavours, with more sweetness being developed when it is being grilled.
there are a lot of weird banana recipes in my vintage cookbooks!
The apple pie grilled cheese and the kimichi grilled cheese look amazing.
I noticed that too! Lol
May be she made a second one.
@@abhilashagupta4357 yes, that is more than likely the case lol, I was just joking
Beryl!!
1. Your facial expressions are amazing.
2. Where is your sweet orange shirt from?
Thank you for your heartwarming content.
Hey Claire! Thank you!! It is from an online shop called Cider!
Watched this this morning, made the apple grilled cheese for lunch. Delicious!!
For bananas, I like to put a little oil and cook/mash it down into a paste. I use it as a spread instead of jam.
I had to have a grilled cheese today! My go-to is Apple, cheddar cheese, and blackberry jam. 😋
I don't normally think much about the artist of the day but wow this is AMAZING artwork i love it so much!
Also Justin is ADORABLE
Grilled cheese with caramelized onions, chili, and bacon is my favorite
Cheese and kimchi is an amaaazing combo, my roommate and i used to make quesadillas with cheese, garlic mayo, and kimchi just cause we didn’t have a lot of food in our fridge. Adding caramelized onions and mushrooms is great too if you have them and wanna make it more substantial
Potato chips on sandwiches are great! My favourite is salami and chips, so yummy!
Plain potato chips on peanut butter and jelly is sooo good. And Doritos go really well with tuna.
Delicious!
With all that extra cheese, you might as well make a mac and cheese episode!!!
Actually this is not how we commonly make grill cheese sandwich in India because when it comes to India, there are alots of flavours and masalas going one so this is not how exactly we make he just gave his own recipe i guess.
In case you want to try here's the recipe:-
1.Boil the potatoes and smash them
2.Heat up some oil put some cumin seeds mustard seeds and curry leaves
3.add your boiled potatoes
4.Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, dried mango powder, garam masala, green chillies to make it extra spicy and salt into your mixture (each and every masala is as per your taste just put how much you like)
5.Turn off the heat and mix everything up
6.take your bread apply generous amount of butter, add green chutney, add thick layer of your mixture you made, add alot of cheddar cheese and a cheese slice and close it with another bread with chutney on it and grill it in a griller
7.Top it up with some butter and thin sev(optional)
And you're done!
This is the classic way and we call it as Masala cheese grill sandwich
You must try!
And also i forgot to tell you add some raw vegetables such as capsicum onions tomatoes inside your sandwich and eat it with ketchup and green chutney
Banana and curry pair so wonderfully! I made a curried banana and sausage dish once and it was delicious, I have to try in a grilled cheese sandwich.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE putting chips on my sammies too! I love making a turkey, cheese, and Dorito sandwich, it reminds me of summer time since that was always our easy beach snacks heh
I only learned the chips-on-sandwich thing in like 2009 and it was mind-blowing to me!
Hey better late than never right? Lol I’ve always had a weird thing about condiments as a kid, I didn’t use mayo, mustard, ketchup, etc. I hated the smell and couldn’t get passed it; so adding chips was huge for me too, since everything was always plain heh
Cheese! Bread! My favourite foods! 😍
One time, my roommate caramelized onions so I used that pan for a grilled cheese. Game. Changer. I can't wait to try the garlic hack!
After living my entire life in India I can confidently say that I have never ever in my life heard of the Indian cheese sandwich mentioned in the video.
Well he did say that his mother invented it for him and his brother so makes sense you’ve never heard of it
Having lived my life in the aforementioned country in this comment, I can attest to this statement.
And also, the Bombay sandwich one.
Thank you.
India is so diverse though.
