They've done live performances differently throughout their career, from them being all behind the screen, to the Demon Days live shows where the guest vocalists were in the spotlight with the musicians and Damon being silhouetted against color backdrops. Mostly since then they've all been live onstage with a screen behind them.
On Nov. 11 the of the year 2000 my face met the rear end of a ford moving truck. This group helped then and there so great they help me still. Thank you so very much.
Performance I've seen in videos of live and I take it to me that like old school hip hop just lives in the brain of the drummer and this is just the moment where it gets to breath You know like this is the stuff that lives in his head
Man I got so excited once you said live I could've sworn it was gunna be the one when Snoop Dogg came out, but still happy to see all your Gorillaz reactions.
I was at that gig. They pulled a fast one with Snoop as they used a pre-record for the track they did with him so we all assumed he wasn't going to make an appearance. Him walking on partway through this track was one of the musical highlights of my life.
I highly recommend also watching one of the performances where it's just a straight up live band they have several tours like that. One such is live at the Apollo which is a really cool show
I'd recommend the Glastonbury 2010 set as it's probably the only one where they had he majority of guest stars on stage with them. From memory they had Lou Reed, De La Soul, Snoop, Kano and Bashy, Shaun Ryder, Mark E Smith and Bobby Womack. Sure there's more that's slipped my mind. The gig got panned somewhat but it was definitely a gig of two halves. First half just the band and that was OK at best (loads left during this). Then the second half was including all the guest stars and was fantastic.
One thing I love is that the rap is completely different than the album version of this song. I wonder if it's because they have a different rapper, and thus gave him room to bring his own energy to the song?
This was actually the original version of the song. When Damon first started recording the track he did it with the UK Hip-Hop collective "Phi-Life Cypher" (if you like your Hip-Hop they're well worth checking out in their own right). However, when Damon brought DangerMouse in as the producer on the album I believe, for whatever reason, they felt they needed a different MC on the track and DangerMouse had a connection to Del the Funky Homosapien, sent him the track and he threw down a couple verses. They loved it and so that was the version that ended up on the album but, like I said, this version was actually the original version.
My man the guys who are rapping are called phi life cypher. Even if you don't do it for a video you owe to it yourself to give them a listen if you're a fan of music. Keep up the good work 👏
I saw the Gorrilaz live at ACL in Austin, Texas in 2015 and it is undoubtedly one of the best performances I have ever seen live. Their production level is absolutely unreal and while incredibly grand in scale and scope it doesn't try too hard or take away from the musical performances going on. From lasers and a massive TV screen with animations and flashy sequences it can also drop into a single spot light on Damon as he performs a solo bit that transitions with into more visually appealing affects as the other performers slide into the solo. It's so well thought out and just genuinely artistic in a multitude of ways. It'd be fun to hear you also cover Glass Animals, they have a really interesting approach to music and lyrics and solid instrumentals to go with it. I saw them perform just before Gorillaz on that hot a*s second weekend of ACL 2015
Love Del, but if he's gonna check out the Deltron3030 stuff, I feel like he should check the OG of that style, Dr. Octagon. Dan the Automator produced that album long before 3030 was a thing. No beef or nothing, just very similar styles, same producer is all I'm saying. Plus I think Boyd would dig it a lot, older artist with a bit different feel, more like what he seems to like. But experimental as well. If you don't know either, should give it a listen. Buddy showed me after we were talking about deltron3030, and I was immediately into it. It's got a bit weirder vibes, but the fun kind. And it was cool to sort of see where it all came from. Also just good stuff in general. Album you should check out would be the self titled one, if you can't find it, the name was later changed to Dr. Octagonecologist, so look for that perhaps. Love both artists, just wanna spread a bit of knowledge and music wherever I can ✌️
@@nicjohn648 Indeed he was. That's what made it pop into my head immediately. You can read the lyrics and spot his feature on it just by the cadence. Knowing the stuff he likes to react to, it's right up his alley.
Another great "artificial" animated group is Dethklok. One man, 5 instruments, the BEST ironic heavy metal you'll ever hear. As a first look, I recommend the song Murmaider.
This original version with Phi Life Cipher rapping is my favorite. I much prefer it to the version with Del. I remember watching this performance live on tv. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend checking out more by Phi Life Cipher
They're actually about to start a new tour, Europe first, then North America in September and October. I tried to convince my boyfriend we should try and travel to see Twenty One Pilots and Gorillaz in the same time frame, but only one location gets them within a few days of each other. He said he doesn't really want to go to Salt Lake City lol.
gorillaz live stuff is basically features of loads of different artists. you dont go to live concerts or listen to live stuff if you want the original songs lol. its amazing how they can introduce other artists into their already dynamic music style tho, just really different vibes.
You'll probably notice this as you do more from this band, but there's actually a story weaved through these videos; see if you can catch it as you watch...😎😎😎 P.S. They named the Characters at the end: the lead singer is "2-D", the short one is "Noodle" (The only girl in the group), the drummer is Russel, and the guitarist is "Murrdoc".
@@mikeypillow5285 this is phi life cypher. Ironically, this is what the original version actually sounded like, but after the album was done, before release, they had del record his version and they liked that more so they went with the del version

This video for what ever reason made me think well the Gorrilaz are a first ballot Rock and Roll hall of fame group. So I looked up when they were formed 1998 the only requirement other than being legends are the act is 25 years old. So they could join their rightful place in music history in the next few years. They are no beetles because basically no one is but also not found anyone else be even compared to the Gorrilaz only other band that comes up is blur mostly as they have the same lead singer and its his project.
Should check out some Reel Big Fish sellout, she has a girlfriend now, trendy, take on me(cover), hungry like the wolf(cover), the many versions of suburban rythem
They play way more than hip hop, as he said here you'll hear many different genres depending on the song. The only permanent member is Damon Albarn, who plays many of the instruments himself for the album recording. He often has guest artists and collaborators for different songs, and will bring live musicians on tour.
Awesome to see you react to the live performance. I think i prefer the live Feel Good Inc performance from the MTV EMA's but this was pretty cool back in the day. And i like how they went with a live performance with the pacing of the original song, but the guest audio from one of the remixes it gave this a totally different vibe than if it had been a straight live performance of the original Clint Eastwood.
I assure you Gorillaz are playing live behind the screen. If you have an oculus, I would highly recommend doing a reaction the the VR vid for Saturnz Barz
there was a lot of drama about money with Del (he thought he deserved the same live cut as Damon which is nuts because he is on two whole songs. De La Soul usually use their version of the song when they perform it live with the band so they dont bite Del's verses
Maybe check out some N.A.S.A. It's a collaboration project pairing artists from North America and South America with musical influences from throughout, very interesting work. This album was one I listened the cover off of. The other album I did that to was the 2nd half of the genius of this song and was sadly lacking in this live version. That's Deltron 3030. Clint Eastwood without Del the Funky Homosapien on this track it just lacks something. You should react to anything off Deltron3030. It's another collaboration and it's one of the best concept hip hop albums ever imo. It's right up your alley MrLBoyd and I'd bet your audience as well.
