- David Samson today revealed a story about when the Miami Marlins fired their bat boy after he lost a gallon challenge bet with a Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and threw up outside of the clubhouse. Only the news was known and we discovered the bat boy made an appearance on the David Letterman Show. 20 years later Nick Cirillo is still waiting on an explanation from the Marlins about why he was fired and gets to confront former Marlins team president David Samson. Then Brad Penny the player that made the bet that lost his job tells his side of the story.

Domonique’s genuine uncontrollable expression of joy/delight as Samson realizes the ball boy is actually going to confront him during this interview is priceless. Also, I love that the show has a “rejoiner” of Samson telling everyone who will listen that he loves to fire people in person because it gives him a chance to enlighten them with his sage career wisdom and provide them with life advice … and yet he never actually bothered to have a conversation with this dude (and save the money on the Samson bots/burners telling me that was only for people he directly supervised). Great reactions from Jess throughout the segment!

Samson vividly demonstrates one of the qualities that so many top corporate executives share - an icy cold heart. Not concerned at all with anybody's health, only about the company's potential liabilities. Btw,, I believe I came close to drinking a gallon of milk within an hour when I was about 16. I had a summer job working in a summer camp kitchen, and more than once I'd take a break after completing my duties for a meal, and eat a whole large box of Oreos, and wash it down with at least a quart and a half of milk. Had I "tossed my cookies"" yeah, would have blamed it on the Oreos.

The number one thing the ex-ball boy said, and that is extremely ironic given how off Samson was today at getting the joke, is that players just wanna goof around and laugh. These are basically fraternity guys in their 20s. And not really mean spirited way, but they just wanna shoot shit. Clubbies making literally just a few bucks will happily entertain for nothing and especially for cash. There is a power dynamic thing at play which is worth getting into maybe. The guy even referenced it when saying Samson was the big shot prez (which was probably true, especially back then). And Samson had no problem bossing players and staff around, although not in a "do this or your fired" kinda way. Should that kid have been fired? Hell no. If anything, Penny should've been reprimanded, but he was an away player then, so what are you gonna do. It's not like Dodgers personnel would do anything. And you wouldn't suspend a player for that anyway. But if the clubhouse attendant throws up for a players amusement, I feel like it's the player who needs to be disciplined, not the staff member, especially given the power dynamic. NBD really since this guy ended up working in the MLB for someone else.

love you guys so much. I love the DLS entity so much even sans Dan and Stu. I grew up in Okeechobee where there isn’t shit (except for that of cows) and watching Florida Marlins games every night with Rich and Tommy on the call, seeing all of those God awful orange seats empty every night when there was still a hint of teal in the uniforms, was always the highlight of my day. I think back on that time glowingly. one of the first guys I think of is Brad Penny. so cool you guys got him for this crazy ass story.
I love dunking on Samson as much as anybody and as pure entertainment, this segment was top notch. But real talk, the true villian in this story is Brad Penny, who was throwing the equivalent of a nickel in my pocket to an overgrown child, to humiliate himslef for Penny's own amusement. Even more pathetic is that 20 years later, this stunted man child hasn't found the self-respect to turn down another 'milk challenge' by Torre, the insigator.
