  • How wide should your Mountain Bike handlebars be? | Unboxing Renthal Fatbar | Carbon handlebar Installation | MTB: Join me as I unbox my new Renthal Fatbar Carbon Handle Bars. I will then test my new Handlebar with to see if I should run 780mm or 760mm handlebars on my Intense Recluse Elite Mountain Bike. I begin with the installation at Jax Bicycle shop in Murrieta, then we go the testing grounds, and then we conclude with my final judgement in regards to if Im going to run 780mm vs. 760mm handlebars. It's always a good thing when the trails convert every leap year, to the new wider standard. Midnight, Feb 29 it's so cool to be out there, and watch everything just magically move over to allow the new stuff to fit through every tight corridor, and the trees pull up roots, scoot over, and plop back down precisely 30 mm to the side.

    Went from 660 on my XC bike to 780 on my new all mountain bike. It's been a huge adjustment but I'm starting to feel more comfortable with it. My biggest worry has been clipping the bars or smashing my hands on a tree!

    In case you don't know: You can use the reverb remote clamp for your front brake. It'll clean up your cockpit and save a bit of weight.
    I ran 800 and 780 for awhile. I didn't feel any benefit from the extra 20 so I trimmed them down to help with tree strikes.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  6 лет назад

      Im starting to feel how turning is a bit slower with wider bars as i experiment over time. I really don't know what you are referring to in regards to reverb remote clamp i need to look this up, thank you!

    riding tight single track on the east coast means 750mm. Sure, I like a wider bar but i also like not beating my knuckles against trees aside the trails. i even cut my enduro/cross country/Hare scrambles KTM bars down to 29" = 736mm to fit through the trees easier.

      Dirtnap300 , I feel your pain having to run more narrow bars as I ride Western North Carolina and the upstate of South Carolina.

  •  7 лет назад +3

    I have had few tight spots on narrow single tracks where the 780mm has been almost too wide. But that has not happened so often.

    The wider handle bars will reduce arm pump, they will reduce joint slipping issues,but of course when I ride hard in very technical terrain or do street riding, the joints slip, but on more xc and asphalt or gravel riding switching from 720 to 800mm has made a huge difference.

  • @Terruhcutta
    @Terruhcutta 6 лет назад +1

    I also went from a 625 (650?) stock bar with a super long stem to a 720 and a short stem. man what a difference! I love it, but I cant imagine any wider.

  • @JustinRamseyphotography
    @JustinRamseyphotography 7 лет назад

    I run 780's and have no issues other than a few of the skinny bridges you have to dismount and rear wheel walk over. But no issues with trees or ultra tight trails so far so good. I certainly wouldn't want to go narrower than 760, but 780 is the sweet spot for me

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, i can agree i like bigger that 760 I'm wondering now how 770 may feel, due to my size this might be my sweet spot but Im not sold yet on shaving them.

  • @leroygt1
    @leroygt1 5 лет назад +1

    A comfortable bar width depends on arm length and the geometry of your bike (stem length etc.). I just put on some 800mM bars on my hardtail and found them too long. I'm 5'9 with a 70 inch reach. 720-750mM works and feels best for me on this particular bike.

    XC racing - 650-720. Downhill - 720+. Within those ranges, take shoulder width and arm length into consideration. I race XC with a very long and low stem and use 700mm. I cannot sprint efficiently on anything longer and I get the stability from the longer stem.

  • @goranradakovic4108

    Nice vid like always.
    After 30 years of ridin' (i'm 54), I run 760 mm RF NEXT 35 carbon bar with 50mm ATLAS stem and pretty happy with them.
    I'm 5.10 and try 780, but I think is too much wide for me. Just not feel so comfortable.
    I don't think that 20 mm of width make any big difference for terrain I ride (and is very mixed one).
    Between 760 and 800 yes, it is difference, but hey, come on 10, 20mm, nope.
    Think that all depends of rider shoulders width and comfortability on the bike.
    Leave Young kids to play in their courtyard with 800mm bars, someday every mountain will be Whistler lol, lol.
    Anyway I'm not big fan of shaved bars. I like their original made size.
    Again great vid, and interresting project too. Keep doin' dude.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +1

      Dude, thank you so much, I really agree with ya, 780 makes me just feel safer in technical sections, I think that is why I'm enjoying them so much right now..

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 7 лет назад +7

    So far I have not had any issues with wide bars on tight trails, but unless you try to ride between 2 tight walls it should not be an issue, but some times there are enduro tracks that do that, I saw a clip of EWS run and the course was going between 2 rock walls, so the riders had to run with narrower bars than usual.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +3

      Johannes Nilsen yeah man some trails can get really narrow

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 7 лет назад +3

      if there are just not so huge trees, it won't be a issue, but trees can be an issue too, it they are of the fat kind, then its like a wall, because you cant turn the bar and lean to go trough. But in my area three are no fat trees or trails going between rock walls.

    I use RACE FACE Sixc 35 800mm, but I have not noticed any flex in the bars yet. But I notice flex in my 2014 fuel ex 7 29. But the vibration damping was very notisable.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +3

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 7 лет назад +1

      I am going to try the Atlas cranks, I loved the Turbine cranks, I am satisfied with the sixc bar so far, the turbine dropper too,my bike not much, I recently dislocated the left rear bearing, the frame is way too flexible, trek called this a trail bike, but it's junk.
      I will have to look for proper frame or bike now:-(
      BTW I saw on mtbr.com that race face updated their sixc bars to 820mm

    800mm spank vibrocore for me and I ride a small frame (basically the same height as you)
    all down to personal preference - I went from 680 - 711 - 750 - 800. wouldn't go back to carbon as its far too stiff. can't remember the last time I got trail buzz with these vibrocore bars
    also stem length has an effect too on body position. longer bars + shorter stem
    wider bars also make the front end lift up more, I climb with my hands inboard

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +1

      Very interesting, i myself am thinking of trying a shorter stem

    • @MTBScotland
      @MTBScotland 7 лет назад +1

      I've tried 60, 55,50,35. Settled on a 50m with a 10 degree rise. The other stems haven't gone to waste though as they are on the rest of the family's bikes lol
      I'd try a stem with 10mm less length. It will reduce the twitchy feeling with going wider.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  7 лет назад +2

      easton, spank, rsp - TBH they are all pretty much the same, I wouldn't buy a stem just because it matched the bars. The spank stem was just a coincidence as it was the length I wanted at the price I was willing to pay. My bro inlaw has the apex stem with the fat bar light carbon (740) because he is anal about that kinda shit lol. no way would I pay £80 for a stem.

    I have 740's on my Trek Xcal-9 and just got a Spider 275c with 760's. On my close by trail that I ride often, I did two laps last night and clipped the same dang tree just barely on the bar both laps (didn't wreck though). It's a pretty tight trail in that section, I'm gonna see if I can get my tires a little further from the tree and make it without clipping. I will say this though, I don't think I could ride this particular trail with 780's on it.
    Good vid again MTBdI..

    Are renthal fat bars compatible with race face atlas stems ? Already own the stems ( 2 different lengths ) and was thinking of getting the renthal carbon fat bar , , gets too expensive if you have to buy new stems as well .

      Slowing down in tight places is definitely needed, a also cornering and balance practise is needed, I slow down and turn my bars in one direction and lean the other and turn back to pass tighter trees if there is tighter trees I just walk around which is never for me.

    Weird question because I'm pretty OCD, I bought a renthal carbon fatbar and am using a cheap stem to get the fit right on my new bike before I buy my apex 35 stem, I noticed you used a stem on this like the one I will be using first then you switched to an apex stem, did this first stem you used scratch up the bar where the stem contacted it? The apex stem doesn't have the full plate up front so I thought scratches would look pretty bad when I switch to the apex since it shows more of the bar.

    • @MTBdropIN
      @MTBdropIN  5 лет назад +1

      lol I'm the same way and thought the same thing, honestly I can't remember for sure if it did or not, if it did it was not a huge deal, however its gonna peal and scratch even with the rental stamp, but I guess it did not rub or scratch anything under the cap now that I things about it.

    Thanx for the video . I just got a new bike it came with 180s. After the first couple of rides i felt they were a little big. Mostly because I over shot a few berms. I notice in a few of your turns you came close to over shooting them. I'm 5'8" and of all the things this is what i noticed the most. Just wondering if you have ever shaved anything off? And did you notice this more as you rode with them ?

    Dude there is only 3/4" between 780 mm and 760 mm on the bars and that is 3/8" on one side of the bar, how much difference can that make? Now carbon fiber and aluminum or steel bar now we have some difference.

      @MTBdropIN  6 лет назад +2

      Bob, thank you for your comment, you have no idea home I appreciate them. To answer your question there, is a huge difference in the feel, I got on my buddies bike the other day, he has 760 and I could tell a serious difference, 760 to 780 feels more different than one might expect.

    Haven't seen anyone talk about body position maybe because 10 or 20 mm one way or the other doesn't seem like it will matter. However, wider bars brings you slightly more forward on the bike. Point is, it should be mentioned..opening up your chest cavity a little bit, etc....just more things to consider, than just splitting the gap between trees and easier handling.

    I run my bars wide pretty much. I ride dirt bikes with renthal bars so I try to copy that to my mountain bikes just to keep the same type feeling I also run the same grip style half waffle style. Watch out about running a wider bar you're a smaller guy as you run a wider bar you're also leaning more forward too so you don't want to run to wide. Wide bars do give you better leverage to a certain point but really what kind of Leverage do you really need on a mountain bike so just be careful with the wide bars does. The Wider the bar the more you lean forward. For me I like to sit on the bike or motorcycle close my eyes put my hands out in front of me where I feel comfortable and then set them down and see where they land and judge from there. I've been in mountain biking since the mid-1980s I've seen a lot of fads come and go it's like a circle it comes around I think we're going to see the multi front chainring again in the near future I think the 1X is not suited for most people. One last thing handlebars are like anything else frame size, seat pedal shoes one size does not fit all so you need to try and find out what you like and stick with it.

    So what he's saying is, he went from 760 mm to 780 mm and he felt more in control... because now the steering is slower. Meaning the steering Arc is longer. Not sure how that could actually feel better. I would agree it's down to ride or preference but on the trail 780 steers like a pig. Downhill I totally understand you don't want a twitchy steering bike. I'm running 680mm. I can't stand wide bars... I want a fast steering machine on the trails 👍

    • @MTBdropIN

  • @kendoglarson5419
    @kendoglarson5419 3 года назад +2

    Hey, man....I did some quick calculations (simple proportion type) against a 6ft tall rider using 780mm bars. At 5'7" you should try 725mm for same experience assuming that is really a straight comparison with no need for accounting for other variables.
    780mm at 5'7" against 6'0" rider is 725mm. Ride some 725mm bars for an apples to apples comparison given your height. So....you should be riding shorter bars according to the math you are already riding beyond 780mm at your height. Your experiment should be to go smaller bars. The math doesn't lie. It's 42% of your height. 42% of 5'7" is 725mm. If you already ride 800mm....your way over what any of those guys ride proportionally. Good luck.

      There is actually no set rule, people have tried, but everyone’s build is different in some way and I could never be comfortable with 725, I do not have the same confidence, i actually ride 800 now and I’m loving it and sending it bigger then ever
