It's amazing to see how much planning you do behind the scenes! I usually... dive right in and whether it turns out or not depends on my willpower at the time to push through haha xD
It all depends on your mood, your energy level, and whether it's a "good drawing day" and so much more, haha. Sometimes I can plan all I want and even then it turns out bad :)
I have been binge watching your videos for a couple of days and I must say your progress is amazing! You’ve improved so much. Your kind and humble personality shines through your videos along with your great artwork. I really appreciate you putting out these videos for free for all of us to see. I am learning from you while also being entertained. Thanks for the tips. Keep on what you’re doing. Know that you’re appreciated.
@@mica4977 >Title Of video is "One Drawing Tip" >"It's actually four or five tips" It's clickbait, doesn't matter if the uploader meant it to be or not.
Does appear like "Plan your art piece before aiming for the final version" is the overarching tip that gets divided into sub-points on how to go about this
Planning things out helps soooo much. I usually just jump into projects but I'm trying to transition into planning more beforehand and the few pieces that I have made that way have been really successful and less frustrating to work with.
Thank you so much for the advice Jelarts. Your advice can be useful for almost anything: digital art, traditional, portfolios, college art projects, work projects, etc. Thank you so much your advice is super useful considering that I am too going to be an art major.
Very informative video. I learned most of those steps while going to school for graphic design oh so long ago but, it’s great to see how you use it for your illustration. The value and color studies were new to me. Thanks for the video.
It's actually really interesting to see your process. I attempted this a while ago, without all the steps, and I haven't been able to get results, but seeing another person do it really helped me out. Thank you for sharing!
wow this is really helpful actually. I generally know that planning your paintings is a really good way to get the results you want, but seeing your full process made me realize it's not just making a few thumbnail sketches and then jumping into the painting (though that does work too to some extent), making soooooo many sketches and looking up so many resources and combining them all together and doing color studies and lighting studies. That's a lot of process work and now I realy wanna try that. I've only ever done that kind of thing with my design projects (I'm an interior designer/graduated last year) but I never thought to apply the full process to my art. Thanks! your example work was really helpful too!
Im making a comic book.I have a great idea but all my drawings make me not proud of it. This is helpful because Im gonna draw it all digitally to make it look way better! Thanks for the tips!
Amazing! I've been having problems to complete my illustrations but this has helped me to have a better idea of how to proceed. Thank you very much for sharing your process ^_^!
Woah, this whole video is like a treasure chest of ideas. I feel so much more inspired now!! I didn't think of these tips, I'm sure they will definitely come in handy. Thanks for sharing your advice!! :D
I hope to be someday as good at making a composition as you are. To make an environment for a character I feel like it's the hardest thing in the world. Everything looks amazing
I’ve really been enjoying your videos lately. They’re so informative and enjoyable and they really inspire me and keep me motivated to push myself in directions and explore more about art ;_;
Omg this is just what I need! I've been struggling a lot with art that's more ''finished'' lately where I use my watercolors and I know it's because I just want to jump right in and do the final piece. Planning is so important and I didn't know the best way to do it, also my lack of patience doesn't help lol You're already a huge inspiration and now you read my mind xD Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. I've been thinking about process a lot lately. I have pretty much done things in the moment and not had actual projects in mind. The art classes I've taken are all adult ed, rather than art school, so they dont focus on larger planned things, it's more technique of the day kinds of instruction. So learning to develop ideas is something I need.
I feel like a dumb dumb for not knowing this. I do some of the steps intuitively but the rest I never even considered. I always suck at executing my ideas cause, as it turns out, I dont plan enough. 😂 thank you so much! I will be trying this for future projects.
I usually do quite a few roughs and thumbnails and then move on to color comps but I've never done any value sketches. I've just never really thought about it but I think it's a great idea and I'm going to start incorporating it into my process from now on, especially since I struggle with shading and lighting.
Thanks for all the helpful info Jel! This is the sort of thing I wish we had gone over in my highschool art classes, we never really went into planning or value studies or color theory and to this day those are the things I struggle the most with.
hey, i liked this video but i just wanted to say, i understand that from an illustration standpoint, references should be used for just pieces of a drawing, but copying a reference directly for practice is okay (you should credit the photo source if you post it though!!) 💖
Hey, The painting turned out so cute, Can you plz give a suggestion of which iPad and size are good for the artist ? I am thinking to try digital art. Thanks
I've seen people use the iPad Mini with Procreate VERY effectively it comes down to a balance between what you prefer and what you can afford, though. The iPad pro 12 inch (approx.) is going to give you a huge canvas and excellent performance, but at $2000 USD it may not be a practical choice. Alternatively the iPad Mini is closer to $400 USD, 1/5th of the cost of the Pro, with internal hardware that's comparable to the Pro. But if you struggle with small screens, this too might be impractical. I hope these examples help give you some perspective! And remember the Apple Pencil is $90 USD, which you'll have to purchase regardless of which tablet you choose.

That's sure is a helpful tip/s! But every time I want to plan for an illustration I just do the first steps then all of sudden I find myself too exited and draw the illustration hahah :'), I do some of this steps usually in my mind lol! Hi Jel! I recently got an ipad of my own with an apple pencil and procreate. I was wondering what some of your favorite brushes to use are? any tips on how to go about coloring as well?
Thank you so much for a very helpful video! What are you drawing on, it looks like an apple pen, but not like an iPad? (unless there is a new model that I have missed).
@@soren9715 thank you! I have an iPad pro myself, but did not recognize the the little indentations. But mine is a couple of years old. (I absolutely love it)
tehsina Haq a bunch of people use procreate but if you’re a beginner I would start out with an app that’s free, like Medibang or ibisPaint. I’m not saying this is good info, those are just the 2 apps I stated with :)

Could I ask? What size do you make your canvas in procreate, and how many layers do you use, in general? Thank you for sharing with us. Kindest. @debbiejoyart
I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I wanted to ask you, is that pink sketchbook from the begining designated for thumbnails and roughts or is that your current sketchbook? And if it is a designated sketchbook for thumbnail, how does that help or influence your process?
Yeah, I use it for really rough stuff. It was $9 from Michael's so it allows me to use as much paper as I want and not feel like I'm wasting good paper on just scribbly pencil stuff. I used a third of it just for one project at school, so it really prevents me from using up all my nice sketchbooks!
Your sketchbook doesn’t need to be pretty in my opinion. I say go all out, it’s yours!
Yeah, go crazy!
