Wow your advice is so good, I’m a bit shocked at how accurate your timing is :’) I always hear and see people saying “oh you should look at art you love and see what you enjoy and implement it in your own art!” and stuff like that. I feel y'all there! I'm not sure if satisfaction ever truly comes or not with drawing (still not satisfied with my own style sometimes as well, unless they're studies or observational sketches), but with my experience there's a weird labor of love feeling (don't know how relatable that is or not). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Its nice hearing your backstory and how it isn't one of those "I've been drawing since I was 3" stories. Not that those stories mean anything negative, I just can relate with the "I started doing Anime characters" thing more :D Right now I'm finally starting to draw watercolor and I feel like from here a lot of things will change (espeiclly my paper thickness :D ). Also, very nice video I like watching them =)
I'm 21 like you and only a couple of years ago I realised that it didn't really matter if drawing was going to be my career or not, I have FUN drawing!! Now I'm a lot less stressed about it and, like magic, I improve every day. I was thinking I had to set the bar high, then that I should have lowered it... but the truth is I had to get rid of that bar! Of course I still have personal goals like finally learn how to do side view of faces cause that's a mistery for me :D But I mainly enjoy the time I take to draw everyday, trying new things, laughing at them and then try to fix. There's no need to make a perfect piece every time I open the sketchbook!
Fair warning this might be a bit of a rant... So I've been drawing for, uh, maybe a year or two. Dates are fuzzy but that's unrelated. But when I started drawing I had only one inspiration, and that was my best friend, so I pretty much spent 10 months trying to copy them and it turned out absolutely horrid. Due to that, I decided that I was going to draw however I wanted to. It worked well for 6 or so months and my art skills skyrocketed. Then I got more inspirations as an artist and it really made me realize that even though I was letting myself draw anything I wanted, it still wasn't how I wanted to draw. And because of that, drawing started to really stress me out. Not because it wasn't looking like (insert artist) but it was because I stopped improving and it just wasn't fun to draw like that. I flipped my art around and now I'm struggling with getting it to be something I find fun to draw. I'm closer now but I think because of my lack of uh time drawing I don't have as many technical skills. Anyways, thank you to anyone who read this the whole way through. It really means a lot.
as i am watching this, i hit a style crisis, I painted some small doodles with old wet paint from a painting from this morning AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH! the doodles are so different from what I normally do and idk why
I know the struggle of getting inspired by other artists and wanting to draw like them. My technique is to ask myself what exactly I like about their style. The inking? The shading? So I try that out and build my own artstyle with the influence of other people.
It's so interesting to see how artist find their own style and when they share it on RUclips like this it actually helps smaller artist (like myself) find new ways to grow and expand their own style! Lovely video as always Jel ❤
I can confidently say that your channel really helped me on my art journey. I've been a portrait artist on and off a few years ago, now I moved on and I think about drawing every day. I'm glad I found your channel when I started getting serious on my path. Thank you!
I did start with Anime style but I gradually move to semi-realism and realism (learning anatomy) I've finally discovered my art over the course of 3 years (when I started to get serious and left anime style). I came back with this cartoon style and kept drawing until I started to make it something more recognisable and then leaving of drawing for some months. Until recently this summer I started to draw every day. I know it took a lot of trials and errors. But over the course of 3 months I finally saw improvements on my arts. I really thank you and the other artists that helped me through their videos. Thank you very much
As someone who doodled a lot as a kid and then stopped for a decade, I'm definitely learning these things later in life than you did, but regardless seeing your journey is comforting. These days my busy schedule and anxiety about never being able to achieve what I want combine to make progress feel really slow, but just as you said, I don't plan on stopping any time soon. My problem is I always want things to have more detail, or look a bit different so I iterate a ton (mainly paint digitally) and that drags out the time it takes to finish things. Getting comfortable with something not being perfect is what I have to start working on. We'll all get there, just have to keep at it!
INSPIRING video. I'm right now, in my 40's, in my journey of discovery in my own art... strange as that may sound. I used to draw a lot in my teens, and as much as I wanted to learn inking and coloring, working with real paint just wasn't something I took to... messy form and inconsistent color tones had me too frustrated, lol. Pretty sure copic markers weren't around back then. But I having gone into work in the graphic design field, which is of course more "technical" oriented for publication composition, I greatly developed my digital skills. Among that, color tuning and blending that isn't akin to "chemistry" like with paints, or at least it was to me, lol. Thing is I'd gotten more and more used to designing with a mouse and one day I pondered why I wasn't drawing by pencil any more. And seeing that digital painting, merging freeform hand illustration with the limitless options in color toning & blending, is what I've always been looking for to expand my creative expression... I decided to do something about it. So I've had my Wacom tablet for little over 2 months, beginning with just practicing form (lines, character, posing, etc...), getting back into shape with my character sketching, and beginning my venture into fully fleshing out my art in color to complete the lines. After a prolonged absence in hand illustration, I realized I had no clear vision of my own style. I don't mind saying I take my inspiration from a broad range of comic artists; John Byrne, George Perez, Neal Adams, John Buscema, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Michael Turner, J. Scott Campbell, and more recently, Stanley Lau (Artgerm). I think we all agree art doesn't exist in a vacuum and most artists (including the ones I named) are inspired by those before them. Of course I don't want to be an *imitation* of any of them, but in drawing upon them as a *learning reference* that I develop (or re-develop) my skills. And THIS is the epiphany your video gave me; From inspiration, emerges passion. From passion, emerges skill. From skill... emerges style. Style isn't a determined choice, it's the *organic result* of practice, dedication, and patience.
after graduating high school i stopped doing art for many years, although i really wanted to paint but i didn't feel confident enough to bother. when i first started drawing again, around last year, i was so disappointed with how horrible everything looked, it was like i had lost some of my art skills. your videos and advice have actually helped encourage me to get back into art and embrace it because i'll get better if i just keep at it.
i know it’s been a minute since you posted this but thank you. when you said “don’t focus on what you want your style to be, and focus on what feels right to you” that clicked for me idk what it was. but thanks 😊 lol
Thank you this video is really inspiring because finding your art style can be so frustrating I also begin with anime style Now I try to be more realistic have fun and stop thinking too much 😊
Artists get each other! It is the only explanation of how they know all these tips and also because they have done that themselves :) I love this channel!!!
I love your take on this topic! Something I see people saying the most is that improving = drawing in a more complex way; adding more detail. But I don't think that's how it works. I draw kawaii/anime style and while I was focusing on improving I actually thought I needed to make my drawings look more 'realistic' in order to improve them (smaller heads and eyes, for instance). After a while I felt super uncomfortable with what my art had become. Now I have embraced my simple kawaii style and have been working on techniques to improve my style without actually changing it, and I've never been happier with my big headed huge eyed girls. It's important to know the basics but I feel like what's more important is improving your technique in order to make your style look better, not changing your style so you can use all the techniques.
I just started drawing, it all started at the beginning of the quarantine and I ended up giving up for a while because I always feel frustrated and think that I will never be able to draw something beautiful or realistic, your video helped me that even the simplest can be beautiful, thank you
Thank you so much! I was trying to force myself into the anime style, but then I realized that I feel more comfortable with a more simple style, like you lol. And I tried to doodle around just like you suggested in another video and I have seen some progress!!! And again, thank you so much, ily!
I just got back into drawing. I let it go for a few years because people in art communities were so negative, not to me in particular but my friends and people I worked with and it just got kind of stressful. Now I’m jumping back into it, and I feel like I lost my technique a bit but in a way I’m not mad about it because I feel like it’s a good point to start my style over
I like how your journey started with anime, I've seen videos where other artists started out the same way and even came across some bumps in their journey because they drew anime. All art starts from the artist enjoys to see and create. But I don't feel like that my art is coming around to the same skill of the ones I admire for their work. I'm glad your work keeps improving and hope I and others are able to find their own way to better improve and stop comparing my work to others and stop trying to rush to reach the expectations we set for ourselves. Thank you for making these videos, and keep on drawing!👍❤
This is a wonderful video, thank you for sharing your experiences. This synchronicity is very cool: i was talking 2 hours ago with my boyfriend telling him that allowing myself to draw is my « therapy »...i know i have to allow myself to let my drawings be what they are to be authentic to myself; all the things that you said in this video talks a lot to me because that’s exactly how i’m feeling about drawing. Thank you!!!
You made me feel so much better on so many different levels i cant even count. Srsly thank you so much. I struggle a lot recently and saw myself in some of your phases and ,,, it gives me hope :')
Honestly thank you so much jelarts!! I've been watching your videos for abt a year now, and out of all the youtubers I watch, you've been the most influential. You've made me learn so much stuff abt myself, and my art, that I have to thank you. I look up to you, cause I'm only 13, and if it wasnt for you I would've probably already quit art. So thank you for inspiring me everyday❤❤
I struggle with letting my art style evolve. I think it's cool that you said it will evolve naturally. Sometimes I forget art styles change. Love the video!
I loved this video, I'm in the third (of four) year of art school and I still haven't found my art style. I feel like I learn a lot, and I definitely am more skilled since I started, but not having found my art style yet frustrates me. From now on I'll just go with the flow, not put too much pressure on it and have fun! Thankyou!
I love how loose and simple your art can be, I think I've been following you since your art started to evolve more, your videos have inspired me a lot, and it's been really cool to see you improve!
It was really cool to see your journey! I've just recently started trying to draw in a cartoony style. I always just did semi-realism, but kind of closer to realism. I always admired people with cool cartoony styles, it always seemed so much more difficult to draw cartoony things than to draw realism/semi-realism. So I feel a bit like I did when I started to draw, I'm very uncomfortable with everything I make. But learning is fun, so it's also very exciting.
Good video ✌😁 I have been drawing consistently for about a year and trying new things along the way. I don't think I have a style and/or am trying to identify my nuances. I'm not too worried about it for now since I'm an infant artist. What I think is most helpful and prominent in your advice is the reflection of your own art. Especially how you decided to expand on your skills and try new things. I think that's the best thing every artist can do. Thank you! 🎨
Ur literally my favorite artist on yt i rewatch ur videos a bunch of times especially your watercolor videos i love those i really like the way i color things its really inspiring
That was really interesting, thank you. 😊 I went back to school at 34 to study art and got really bogged down in creating what the tutors liked (that got higher marks), so when I graduated I didn't even touch a pencil for 8 years. Now I'm unlearning everything they taught me and I swear I've made more progress in the last 9 months than I did in 3 years at university! 😁
This video helped me so so much... Hearing that you delt with doubting your style and how you delt with constantly wanting to draw like others... I relate with that so much and I'm sure a lot of others do too. I've been dealing with it for like 2 years and it really has held me back. But now I feel motivated to keep going so thank you so much.
I never really took notice but, since watching this video, I realised how much I improved and how quickly. So thanks because I feel so much more inspired now to draw more and keep making those improvements
When I was 8, I started drawing. I followed tons of art tutorials. I think that's when I realized I loved drawing. I am still struggling with my style, and what I want to do. I really want to do those beautiful illustrations, but found I'm better at realism and portraits.... This really helped!
Thank you so much for making this video, thank you for making videos actually, every time I see one of your videos I get so inspired. I kind of have my style figured out right now but I sometimes get a bit of an art block and don't have any inspiration and your videos help me a lot with this. Right now I'm working on figuring out the way I want to render digital paintings (and drawing animals, realism)
Just found you as a recommended video. Can’t thank you enough for talking through the evolution journey you’ve been on. I’m just starting to get back into drawing for me and it’s been a revelation to be sure. The advice you give here is very timely and very good. Plus your art is adorable!!
Thank you for this, for a while I've been feeling like I needed to do a certain style but after watching your videos, I slowly started to love an appreciate the way I draw. Thank you :)
I was always told if you have to practice to draw then u can’t draw and I think that s what made me forget about art and just not even try but now that I look back at my younger drawing I have improved I’m currently learning anatomy and finding my styles and improving and your vid helped there’s little things in your art that I love that I’ll try bc idk it warms my heart ? But yeah tysmmmmm I’ll keep on practicing
I'm still a pretty young for where I am in my art. I look up to lots of artists for advice, and I think that's what helped me. I used to only draw cats a few years ago. I noticed the anatomy was all wonky, so I browsed YT. I found this girl named Tennelle Flowers who drew characters from my favorite book series. Then, I found Drawing Wiff Waffles (Aka Rin) And Kasey Golden and of course you. Your styles are very different but your all amazing and inspiring. Thank you

Honestly thank you for this video you truly give me inspiration alot, right now I'm still a beginner artist I'm trying my best to improve everyday. You making this video about your journey made me go beyond even more it truly gives me alot of inspiration and new goals. I'm glad I found you while searching for art videos because you are one of my favorite art channels! Thank you so much again and I hope you keep on posting amazing videos in the future! ❤️ Sincerely- Star 🌠
Thank you so much for making this video! I really needed to hear this and hearing your story made me more confident. I also envy people with a semi realistic style and would try to use certain elements from other people's styles and smoosh them into my art style. But drawing like that never felt right. Like you, I found that I like to draw super simplistic faces but then add tons of details to the character's outfit or surroundings. So this hit home for me and I'm so incredibly grateful that you made this video! I'm super inspired to continue my art journey and I'm not scared to show off my more simplistic style! :) A million thank you's!!!
Hi, I just want to say thank you for giving me my inspiration back. So there is this art academy I really want to go but since I got encouraged I lost my muse for drawings. I started watching your videos and drew along, listening to your advices and got some awesome drawing.❤
It’s interesting, I didn’t start with anime as a style, I copied a book that was 365 drawings a day or something similar, but then when I was thirteen I discovered RUclips (I discovered it at 11 but I thought it was used for watching bad movies free) and deviantart. I was inspired by people who had anime influence in their drawings and now my style has a bit of anime in it. Now my style is really influenced by Illustrators (and some fine artist) because I asked myself what inspired me to draw, and it was the countless of beautiful illustrated children’s books that I loved to read over and over again because of the art.
Skillls babay!, I felt so unskilled when I was doing head perspective over and over again, but my sketches got better and my friend noticed, I had more fun with my sketches
interesting to see how your style had evolved to what it is now :) I don't think I had a set style until I was around 30 and 8 years later its still changing
I've been drawing for quite a long time now, but the thing is that I never draw constantly I want it and usually do some little simple sketches during classes but that's it And while the time goes I don't really improve and still have huge problems with anatomy Once I get home I lose all the inspiration or whole weeks go into fighting apathy Though videos like yours somewhat make me go forward Thank you
Thanks for sharing! I'm always curious on how people get where they are, but as an artist I realize trying to copy peoples art I end up completely different and feel like that's how I ended up having the style I do now but I'm not confident enough to draw in just my own style
This was so encouraging! Thank you so much for filming this and talking about this.🌻 I really hope I will draw until the day I die tbh 🙈🌈 I mean... really, why not? There is so standstills in developing skills, learning and improving, as long as you do not decide to never ever draw again ☀️
omg thank you so much! you helped me so much with this video! I have been struggling with my style for the last few months ( I have 3 artist I really look up too and they all have such beautiful styles) but I have been forcing myself too much >
At the time I’m just working on anatomy, depth, etc (just realistic drawing). And when I feel like I really control those basics I want to start playing with color use, different art supplies and my personal style. But you know, I’m just 13yo so I’ve got a long way to go
Hi! I just watched your video and I want to say that you inspire me so much, and your videos are always calming and insightful. Thanks for being a great youtuber!
amazing video!! it was definitely inspiring to see how much you've changed and improved in so little time. I absolutely love where your art is at right now and I can't wait to see where the future will take you. Have you ever considered dabbling in animation? I'd love to see your pieces come to life!
I love this. I have a very bad tendency to wish I could draw like other people or specific styles. Then I have styles I follow that can do and that’s all I end up doing vs just taking my sketchbook and seeing what comes out naturally. I really need to work on that one. Btw I love those mini paintings of the room scenes!
*OMG YOU ARE THE PERSON THAT SHOWED ME I DONT HAVE TO DRAW LINES FOR LIPS LMAO*

I know the struggle of getting inspired by other artists and wanting to draw like them. My technique is to ask myself what exactly I like about their style. The inking? The shading? So I try that out and build my own artstyle with the influence of other people.
It's so interesting to see how artist find their own style and when they share it on RUclips like this it actually helps smaller artist (like myself) find new ways to grow and expand their own style! Lovely video as always Jel ❤
I haven't finished watching but I know it's gonna be good. Love your art
I can confidently say that your channel really helped me on my art journey.
I've been a portrait artist on and off a few years ago, now I moved on and I think about drawing every day. I'm glad I found your channel when I started getting serious on my path.
Thank you!
I been trying to develop an art style I like it’s so inspiring to see different kinds of art styles people have and how each one is amazing❤️😍😄
I'm saving this for later. I can't wait!
Thank you.
Thank you very much
The paintings you did on the canvases and the smaller post card sized ones were absolutely amazing! Definitely makes me want to pick up paints lol
Your art style is so adorable I love it!
Of course I don't want to be an *imitation* of any of them, but in drawing upon them as a *learning reference* that I develop (or re-develop) my skills. And THIS is the epiphany your video gave me;
From inspiration, emerges passion. From passion, emerges skill. From skill... emerges style.
Style isn't a determined choice, it's the *organic result* of practice, dedication, and patience.
I've been struggling with style and media and what I actually want to draw, this video came at a good time.
after graduating high school i stopped doing art for many years, although i really wanted to paint but i didn't feel confident enough to bother. when i first started drawing again, around last year, i was so disappointed with how horrible everything looked, it was like i had lost some of my art skills. your videos and advice have actually helped encourage me to get back into art and embrace it because i'll get better if i just keep at it.
i know it’s been a minute since you posted this but thank you. when you said “don’t focus on what you want your style to be, and focus on what feels right to you” that clicked for me idk what it was. but thanks 😊 lol
Thank you this video is really inspiring because finding your art style can be so frustrating
I also begin with anime style
Now I try to be more realistic have fun and stop thinking too much 😊
Artists get each other!
It is the only explanation of how they know all these tips and also because they have done that themselves :)
I love this channel!!!
I just started drawing, it all started at the beginning of the quarantine and I ended up giving up for a while because I always feel frustrated and think that I will never be able to draw something beautiful or realistic, your video helped me that even the simplest can be beautiful, thank you
Every time you post I get inspired to draw I love your videos
I'm happy to hear that 👍
Your art is so beautiful, you inspire me!
Thank you so much! I was trying to force myself into the anime style, but then I realized that I feel more comfortable with a more simple style, like you lol. And I tried to doodle around just like you suggested in another video and I have seen some progress!!! And again, thank you so much, ily!
I can't wait to watch thisssss
I just really love your videos
I love your style! It is so soft and cool! :)
This was incredibly inspiring, and I looooved seeing your evolution. You are one of my big style heroes!!
You made me feel so much better on so many different levels i cant even count. Srsly thank you so much. I struggle a lot recently and saw myself in some of your phases and ,,, it gives me hope :')
i love ur current style its like simple but in a rly nice cute way. ur art inspires me alot :)
Thankyou!
I'm really enjoying these insightful/reflective and 'behind the scenes' sorta vlogs. I love seeing folks are journeys and this was so fun to watch.
You've inspired me to start drawing again. Thank you.
I also like Fran Meneses. She inspired me. ❤️ These days I found your channel and you are also a source of inspiration for me. ❤️
Good video ✌😁
I have been drawing consistently for about a year and trying new things along the way.
I went back to school at 34 to study art and got really bogged down in creating what the tutors liked (that got higher marks), so when I graduated I didn't even touch a pencil for 8 years.
It can be so difficult, I've definitely been there! I'm glad my words helped you :)
Your drawings are beautiful!
Thanks for the video!
I like how you proceed on another drawing while i'm here taking 15 minutes to figure out what else to draw
Thank you
Ava Claire are you my twin? That is literally the exact way I got better at art and the order I found my favourite art youtubers in! JuSt GiVe TenNeLLe tHe TiMe tO stRaiGhT uP bLoW yOuR miNd wiTh a NeW ShOw Of DrAwiNg a BLAnK! Waffles Kasey Tennelle and Jel are amazing :) warrior cats rule! Woot!
You should try post art videos on RUclips. I would watch them :)
@@wild_fl0wersss Thanks Em. I'll try insta and Amino first
I can’t draw good like you but you are the best artist I ever seen and thank you for making me happy and draw better thank you
Love the progression and changes from your old art to current stuff 😁 I totally agree with the point of drawing what feels right to you !
Sincerely- Star 🌠
Thank you so much for making this video! I really needed to hear this and hearing your story made me more confident. I also envy people with a semi realistic style and would try to use certain elements from other people's styles and smoosh them into my art style. But drawing like that never felt right. Like you, I found that I like to draw super simplistic faces but then add tons of details to the character's outfit or surroundings. So this hit home for me and I'm so incredibly grateful that you made this video! I'm super inspired to continue my art journey and I'm not scared to show off my more simplistic style! :) A million thank you's!!!
I love your pieces with soft dreamy colors, I remember you had a lot in your school portfolio ❤️
Your advice is great! 😆
Hi, I just want to say thank you for giving me my inspiration back. So there is this art academy I really want to go but since I got encouraged I lost my muse for drawings. I started watching your videos and drew along, listening to your advices and got some awesome drawing.❤
You are one of the channels that encouraged me to start my own!
Thank you so much. That's just what I needed to hear.
your art and style are awesome and so inspiring!! your finished pieces are stunning!
interesting to see how your style had evolved to what it is now :)
I don't think I had a set style until I was around 30 and 8 years later its still changing
It's so cool how styles change!
This video was so inspiring! I have just gotten back to drawing again from a long break and it feels so good. 😍
I love your channel so much, been watching it for 2 years now
This video gave me my answer. Very helpfull👍
I'm glad I'm so early, i love your videos, and I always get notifications! :)
Well...I just looked up Fran Meneses, and I like your style much more. I like your storytelling in your art. Keep up the great work my friend 👍
I've been drawing for quite a long time now, but the thing is that I never draw constantly
I want it and usually do some little simple sketches during classes but that's it
And while the time goes I don't really improve and still have huge problems with anatomy
Once I get home I lose all the inspiration or whole weeks go into fighting apathy
Though videos like yours somewhat make me go forward
Thank you
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah! It's like a life-long companion!
omg thank you so much! you helped me so much with this video! I have been struggling with my style for the last few months ( I have 3 artist I really look up too and they all have such beautiful styles) but I have been forcing myself too much >
I feel like anatomy is still so hard for me and I'm hoping taking an a&p class will be helpful. Thanks for the video and motivation
ur actually so inspiring. Ur style is so uniquely beautiful n so simple n easy. Earned a sub 😊
Yes please! 😍 These kind of videos help me! Now I'm gonna start watching 🥨🍯 x
i love your art it is so cool and your art style is just amazing
East or west
Jelarts is the best...😊❤❤
Love from a small art youtuber❤
Im your 200th subscriber 😉
You're welcome😘
@@johanslays_ thank you😊
I love this. I have a very bad tendency to wish I could draw like other people or specific styles. Then I have styles I follow that can do and that’s all I end up doing vs just taking my sketchbook and seeing what comes out naturally. I really need to work on that one. Btw I love those mini paintings of the room scenes!
Your art is so good 💛
Thank you so much for this video, no grain of salt included.
very inspirational :) love your vids!
This is good advice, I’m happy you shared your art journey. 😁
Recently we watched one of your videos in our art class, kinda cool
