I'm certain that composers 100 years from now will still b trying to keep up with the people that put this machine together. The complicated nature of the VL3 is very difficult to figure out. You can turn on the vocal global preset and simply manually copy (e.g, select next preset, select Store, and move to the next) all your the main vocal preset settings you like to all other presets. When you're done copying your vocal (or guitar) preset to all the other presets simply turn off the global vocal preset. This applies to a guitar preset as well.

      heya! Check in the mixer screen (the 4 little knobs will take you there), that your output for vox/guitar is at 0db. Often that limits volume output and gets missed. I've been using the very basic functions on the VLE3 for about 2 years now, I SO appreciate you making these videos. I've started noticing vocal "bleed" into my guitar loops. I'm considering hitting the "Factory Reset" button, but decided to ask if you have any other suggestions. Have a wonderful time in Japan, we went a year ago and wow, what an amazing culture! So awesome to be touring there! Thanks again for your contributions!

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад

      Hey Grover! you're most welcome for the videos man and glad they've been useful. I have the same issue with vocal bleed on the VL3, and have considered reducing my vocal gain to see if that changes the amount of bleed, but haven't gotten around to experimenting with it yet! If you do before I do... could you let me know! It could also be that I only notice it in small rooms, and what it is, is actually the guitar pickup picking up some of the vibrations of my voice. A good test of that can be using a feedback stopper in the guitar soundhole, and can often reduce what the guitar pickup gets from the room. Let me know if either helps you anyway and cheers for joining the channel 😊

    Touring Japan AND taking time out to record and upload more great content for us eager fans?! You sir are a shining example of work ethic.
    For me, the step button couldn't be more important, since I'm outsourcing all the looping responsibilities to the RC300. The step button helps me quickly build an elaborate mix of sounds before eventually landing me at whatever the vocal/guitar sound needs to be for the current song: so for What Is Love it'll be a delayed vocal with a bunch of reverb, or a slappy transducer sound for Pumped Up Kicks. Then when it's time for the next song, banking up on the VL3 also banks up my GR55, Handsonic and JDXI (or just an iPad if there were loads of stairs at the get in!)

      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      Haha not sure if it’s a good example or a lil bit crazy sometimes haha!
      I love that you brought up the importance of steps 😂 they are super handy for loop building like you mentioned 👌 are you still using the sub n up for your bass sound (think thats what you were running 🤔)

      Haha, thank you sir! Yes it's great having everything linked up, although it does mean that if the notoriously flaky VL3 goes down, so does everything else! 😅
      Awesome video by the way - I love your slick presentation, and it's nice when someone else confirms what you discovered on your own: that the mic clip protection and noise gate were well meaning but utterly useless as default settings. It's nice that they're there, but I imagine a lot of units were returned before people figured out they could turn them off! Haha!
      How are you anyway? Glad to be home or pining for more Soba??

      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      ah that's right haha! Got my wires/pedals crossed haha.
      hmmmm good point about if the VL3 fails on you... that makes for some hasty re-adjustments mid gig I imagine. I'm sure the audience would have no idea you're stressed, but can imagine the performing nightmare that it would be when it happens! 😬
      haha I expect those 2 things alone are responsible for a bunch of people saying the VL3 is simply awful... 'my guitar just cuts out... the vocal level drops randomly at gigs...' haha!
      I'm good mate! Been a hectic hectic schedule and not sure actually why I decided to add filming this into the midst of it, but just had an evening over there to film and not much else happening in the hotel room that eve so this is what came out haha! • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  3 года назад

      Hey Scott - I have a feeling that the midi connection won't let you put audio into the loops of the VL3 (but I could be wrong - the midi side isn't my strength tbh). Just a hunch, but I think your best bet is going to be the main out of the 880 into the Aux input of the VL3 if you want to record grooves from the 880 into your loops. Then on the looping screen simply make sure you have the input set to 'all' or Aux. You can button map to switch between what goes into the loop if you want to eliminate the vocal whilst looping (which cuts down general loop stage noise whilst building). Eg loop guitar input to start with, then switch the input to Aux only. Let me know how you get on!

    Hi David I love your video's there very informative. I've had a vl3 for a few years now but really never explored it that much for customizing the right sound for my live shows but since watching you videos I have a new outlook on this. I have a quick question for you. In the vocal section of the Voicelive 3 in the harmony section particular where do you set you lead level to get the best live mix of harmony and lead vocal?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +2

      Hey Shawn - in the harmony options I set my harmony level to -13. It varies depending on the gain of your mic and how loud you sing etc. Eg if you turn up the gain on your mic and then sing softer into the mic, the harmonies will come out higher in the mix, but once you have a pretty good starting point you're unlikely to need to tweak it particularly much. Hope that helps!

  • @stevehart65

    Sensational video sir.. quick question. is there a way you can independently control the level of backing track V the mic level.. They seem to be as one and the system relies on you getting the mix right when you set up each preset however this surely would be a problem when playing live if you need to adjust your mix on the fly ?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  2 года назад

      Steve you have mixer controls via the four small dials on the unit just below the screen. That'd be the simplest/quickest way to do this and after a while you'll know exactly which dial you need and can just reach down and adjust it 👌

    I'm trying to figure out how to assign a distortion guitar preset to a step within on an existing clean guitar preset. My reason for doing this is when you get your clean guitar settings (i.e, pre\post gain, frequencies, etc) to form really nice bright, fully bodied clean sound simply hitting the step to enable distortion doesn't work because it's using the sound settings for your clean amp and won't produce the required amp\crunch, gain etc you need for your distorted patch. I just can't figure out how to do this.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  3 года назад

      Hey Tim - this is the best video on setting steps - ruclips.net/video/UzwntwA9gvw/видео.html. I did exactly the same thing as you're wanting here - but instead of steps, i simply save the full preset and tone I want to the very next patch and just click up or down the presets to change. Essentially for either of these options though - you'll want to create a preset that has the full tone you want for distortion/delay/amp settings etc, and then go about saving it as a step, or saving it as the preset number just before or after your main one. Reach out if any questions etc and happy to help 😊

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад

      Hey Dharma, I usually record a rhythm section only on track A, and then build chords/bass on track B. then in a song I will use A/B together for the main loop, then if there is a bridge or something like that, I will just use A (which is rhythm only) and play the bridge section that has different chords. Does that make sense?

      if you're writing them to the 'next preset' then they will overwrite what's already there. You would need to make sure that preset is either free, or that you have already copied that 'next preset' to another location if you wish to recall it later etc as it will get overwritten.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  2 года назад

      hey Mr Ryan! Clip protection is only to do with the input gain - making sure signal isn't clipping on the way in to the unit. Unfortunately the VL3 is set up terribly with very inconsistent output volumes for each preset. There's no way to level the output without going in and adjusting it yourself per preset (that I've found up to this point anyway). It's been a frustration for most of us that you eventually forget about as you get presets you enjoy set up to suit.

      heya, great questions! What mic are you using? and silly question - but you are using a Voicelive 3 rather than VL2 etc yes? There isn't a way in the unit to keep the reverb going, but what I do to get around it - is to simply play the last chord live when i stop the loop - that way the reverb tail still comes off my live guitar chord when I stop and it's not so abrupt :) Hope that helps!

    Hey David. Thanks for the great video and thanks for getting me into looping. As a new loop artist, what would you recommend between the VL3X or RC600?

    VL3X seems amazing though I'm not sure of the max 2 simultaneous tracks.
    Really confused here.

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  2 года назад +1

      hey Farrukh. Great question my friend - it really depends always on your specific needs. I would describe the VL3 as an 'all in one' unit that includes a pretty good looping capability. I would describe the RC600 as an excellent loop pedal that includes other effects.
      Overall if you are wanting to get into looping I would go with the RC600, and then if you find you need additional guitar and vocal effects beyond what it provides, I would add and buy the specific gear you need after that.
      I still have the VL3 and would take it with me if I needed a compact solution that includes everything all in one pedal. The VL3x is still one of the most powerful vocal and guitar effects units around (I don't have anything else on my mind that really compares to the TC vocal fx personally).
      Not sure if this helps you or makes your choice harder haha!

      Hey Matt cheers for the comment. I love and hate this pedal haha. If there was something that could replace what it does and do it just as well then i would swap... so far, I haven't found any combo that really does so I'm still using the VL3 and I do love it (when it works). For it's overall size and features it's great - i do feel that there is some risk in buying it with all the issues that are out there. Many are able to be solved on your own, however I had a bad experience with TC's approved repairers in New Zealand who charged me $140 and would not guarantee any of their work, which I then solved myself for $20. The TC helicon social media reps on instagram simply 'like/heart' any mention of TC Helicon, even when it's their fan base saying their TC Helicon pedal stopped working mid gig, or had issues - has happened to me and others. I have had some dealings with people that are part of the TC Helicon team and they seem super nice, overall as a company though I think they have exceptionally terrible customer service. So - with all that said - you gotta choose what you think is right for you. If it works and doesn't have issues you'll have an amazing pedal that you'll absolutely love, if it has issues then do your best to contact TC Helicon and get it sorted, or if it was second hand there's a bunch of self repair advice online that in many cases does work. Long reply mate - but hope that gives you my perspective and experience of the pedals and all of the comments online to take into account!

    I have what seems a big issue. I just bought the VL 3 extreme.
    i do not have any dry output from xlr 'voice - L mono' output when 'mono output' mode in setup menu is selected. What I mean is NO sound/signal can be heard when no effect is on. And activating an effect e.g delay or reverb or (it would seem) doubling etc, results in hearing only those wet output signals. This also occurs if the output mode is set to ‘stereo’, in this instance both left and right voice outputs only output fx wet signal.

      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      Hi Germain. Both the steps or the preset way for changing harmonies are pretty good - just choose whichever works best for you!
      The reason my pitch correction is off, is that my own pitching vocally is excellent, and I don't want anything messing with it, or trying to adjust my pitch especially when there is no guitar signal - eg acapella vocals. I can't actually remember if the GLB is set to 440 Hz, or triggered by the guitar, but I remember noticing it very early on when i got the unit, that it sounded odd especially if playing a small venue with low PA volume. Then you hear both your own voice, plus the slight pitch correction - and they have then a bad clash as they are ever so slightly different.
      I suggest doing whatever feels right for you - it's a handy tool, and I think can work excellently well in certain situations, just isn't right for me hence turning it off!

I'll be singing a phrase with harmonies and all of a sudden the harmonies just top! I realized that I have the harmonies set on Natplay auto sense. Should I change it to midi? To me it sounds like it has more to do with clip protection but I don't have this option. I'm wondering if there is anything I need to do with the db. Lead is on 0 for most options and harmonies are on -6db but it's not like the red light turns on. When I do the set up mic gain it usually settles on 32 db. I wish there were more videos on how to used this with a band and an actual keyboard. Lots of singers in bands are using this and are hooked up to keyboards and there is so little explanation. I have a feeling I got a pedal that is too advanced and too complicated for what I actually need it for. An easy hook via midi to the keyboard that can do harmonies and have a few effects.

      Thanks man. You're a good guy. This particular volume problem I was referring to here was resolved. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I had a volume switch turned down on my boss 505 loop station after swapping some input leads around on the back of it 🤦🏻‍♂️ I was devastated, I went to bed thinking it was broken and the first 2 hours of the next day too. I adjusted so many settings trying to figure out what it was that I had to do a factory reset once I realised what the problem really was. I'm such a doofus

    Hey! Just got the VL3X, having switched over from the old TC Helicon singles. At 3:30, you flip through “Main Setup” and “Main Setup 2”. How do you get to those blank presets?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +1

      Hey Tom - when you click 'save' to save your presets - it lets you choose which blank preset to store them to and you can name them whatever you like. I have simply saved them to 368 and 369 when i created them, and then it's a simple 'up' or 'down' to switch between them once saved.

    with clip protection on with really low input level to me sound better i think u get a more compressed signal ...tell me what u think ...really really low input so what u say wont happen

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад

      if you're getting a good sound thats the main thing! So long as you aren't clipping, there shouldn't be an issue with how high or low the signal level is, although there is the chance of getting more 'electrical noise' in the chain (potentially) if the signal is too low. Your ears will tell you what is working well for you though, and sounds like you have a good sound which is awesome!

    Have you used the VoiceLiveEditor app for your box? It's a bad a$$ way to configure your box. If you don't know, because it's GUI, it really simplifies editing and managing presets, even backups, with the click of a mouse. And it can store up to 10,000 presets that I can download into my box! It advertises it allows the use of set-lists, but I haven't used that yet since I'm just getting started w/ both my VL box and the VoiceLiveEditor software. I made an unsponsored RUclips video that demos the s/w: ruclips.net/video/R0bwKLrnh7I/видео.html

    Great tips, David. I was wondering about the the threshold cutoff for guitar and didn't know where the setting was. So here's a question for you. So I have a bunch of .manual presets setup -- about 40 of them. I like the idea of switching harmony types within the same song by using different presets. Is there any way of inserting a preset into the unit so that existing presets move up one to make space for it (instead of overwriting the preset)?

    • @davidshanhun
      @davidshanhun  4 года назад +2

      Hey Mark, good timing for the noise gate then eh! The easiest solution for you that I can think of would be to use the Voicesupport 2 app and connect your Voicelive 3 to your computer. Will make it easier to drag your presets to later slots and start to make some space to then insert new presets into the mix. Let me know how you go!
