Slightly biased being a GTD owner, but the Golf is a much more solid car overall with a quality build and more premium legacy. Anyone should be happy with either but I genuinely do love my MK7
looking to buy a gtd but having doubts cause I have always driving (to this day and still) high hp gas cars like the old s6 4.2 v8, e39 m5, tuned audi tt 3.2vr6, all fast cars, I had couple of diesels and still have one bmw e39 530d tuned 252hp and 600nm so I know how a diesel feels like, just scared even when tuned stage 2 the gtd will be too slow or isnt it? Well it doesnt have to be fast maybe or that fast but feel like it tho at least if that makes sense.
I nearly bought a GTD recently but opted for a 330D instead, however, there is no fucking way I would pick that Ford over the Golf, ever. The interior quality alone is miles ahead.
Got A3 quattro 220hp after Focus 105hp. Audi (and MQB overall) has shity suspension (mine got 2uc "sport")- no comfort, no handling. Seats are just awful after Focus. Claustrophobic feeling inside the car. VW is a disaster after Ford. The only advantage is acceleration.
I own a gtd and I’m so glad a chose it. £20 road tax and £330 a year for the insurance! And it’s quick! (soon to be quicker once I’ve had it remapped next week) Complete package in my opinion
I own a ST3 diesel and it turns heads much more than that boring Euro box. ST3 overall is a much better car in my opinion. And that’s what it is - an opinion, and certainly not FACT as you make it sound. The ST3 is a clear winner and overall a much nicer looking car especially in Deep Impact Blue
Having owned both id say the interior quality of materials is better in the golf but the focus handles better and I find the seating position better but each to their own
i got both of them, and i prefer the ST, much better feeling of sportiness and better handling, and they dont look like my grandfathers car. just my 2 cents
do not own either of it, test drove both as I once consider either GTD or ST-3 diesel. VW is more comfortable and better design inside but would never call VW design premium, neither are very sporty but very punchy even at low rev, perfect daily drive. Personally found the ST better looking, Golf is abit dull and lack of character, which is also represent by how they drive. Golf is softer but refine, take you from A to B, get the job done but not the extra mile. Focus feel more engaging but raw. They are both good car for daily drive, I would pick the ST if I have to as I found it more character and fun
Having owned both you have summed this up perfectly had a gtd for 8 months as a work car , changed job and bought the focus and still have it 2 years later no issues at all in 50k miles

I will agree. I have a Jaguar X Type diesel which was once compared with the BMW 320d in its day. Reviewers said at the time "Both 150bhp both the same" nope... 2.2 Jaguars not like the 320d at all. 320d was a lot better quality and stronger and capable of sustaining high speeds. Jaguar X Type drove like a typical 1990's Ford. Much better comfortable plodder at lower speeds then a BMW 3 series. More comfortable to drive and a much better low speed donkey then a BMW. Ford built Jags 'Can' go fast as in they can do it ocassionally but they really don't like that at all. German definately engineering wins on the horse bit. Ford does the donkey work better.
In Britain Fords make great mules. They are fairly reliable, arguably quite good, drive quite well, and do the job very well but I am talking about dealing with the UK here. They are perfect all-round cars for British soil and I won't argue that. But build quality, speed, and performance they are rubbish really. Compared to the competition Ford fall foul in this area and they always did. Never as good in a straight line as a German equivalent and not as good at sustaining high speed. Trouble is Ford always put steering and going around corners better than brakes. Give Ford their due they did the little things that matter like extra overboost on a turbo, low short gearing, and go kart steering unlike Germans which is great engineering if you live in the UK. But rubbish if you plan to do high speeds with it.
This video makes me appreciate my Golf R 300 DSG much more 👍🏻. I don't understand how we can call a focus St 185 tdci a sports car 0-60 8.1 seconds. An A class A220d can do a 0-60 in 7.6 seconds so is that also classed as a sports car 😂

Ergh don't get a Mazda I owned a Mazda 2 and a Mazda 3 2016 models for 4 years, they both had break issues, sound like tin cans on the road (awful levels of road noise), the engine will last forever with the right servicing but like all Japanese cars it will fall apart around you, I liked the features in the Mazda but the system played up from day one in both, sporadically rebooting the centre console while driving for no reason, had them looked at by Mazda 4 times and still never got fixed, air con broke in the 2 after 6 months from new, and the start stop was extremely abysmal from day one. 69 GTD 7.5 my new work horse much much higher quality while driving, very low road noise, more comfortable while driving but as mine is sitting on the 18's with wide Pirelli tyres you do feel the bumps, no random reboots on the centre console, much better range tank.(Dislike the start/stop but who doesn't in any car) many more safety features, better adaptive cruise control, so much quicker off the line and has the power there when you need it, 7 speed DSG is the best version to get, nothing like sitting on the motorway in 7th low revs just watching as the MPG goes up and up.
