At least MLB's attendance this year has been mostly positive, a +2,548 differential compared to last year's attendance according to Baseball reference. Not to mention that awesome World Baseball Classic that also happened this year which made a lot of people Baseball fans or MLB fans.

Fans love their local teams and are showing increased interest in them, which is good, but the league wide fandom is still poor which means fans aren't interested in national broadcasts unless their team is included and check out once their team is eliminated, which is bad. Mostly paints the picture of a league office that has done a terrible job of marketing the league even to its fans and needs to shifts its focus onto and completely revamp that area

Baseball fans undervalue this aspect of the league. It's so bizarre how much crying and bitching happened because the "relevant teams" got utterly exposed in October once again.

I think it has to do with how many games there are. In football, there are 272 games. In baseball, just one team plays 162 games. That’s plenty to keep you occupied. Local ratings for baseball teams are actually really good, which is why RSNs would pay so much for them.
I guess the question is, does it matter if baseball as a league isn’t popular? Cuz the amount of games isn’t changing anytime soon.

Blackouts and the need to sign up for so many different streaming services is killing viewership, especially among younger viewers. Almost everyone I know under the age of 50 watched the WS via a pirated stream which probably is affecting official viewership numbers.

Once MLB solves its blackout problems and gets a decent way to distribute digitally, TV ratings won't matter. I also think MLB needs to do a better job of marketing its rivalries and players. Stars aren't the only guys that need to be "known" in order for baseball to thrive. Fans MLB wide need to know about the quirky guys or the ones that run their mouths or the guy who has seen a UFO or who donate millions of their dollars to feed people, etc. I don't watch the NBA but I know about LeBron's philanthropy. I don't watch women's soccer or the WNBA but I know who Sue Bird and Meagan Rapinoe are. How many non-baseball fans can even pronounce Shohei Ohtani or Sandy Alcantara?

I’m an Orioles fan, but could you imagine the collective nightmare that would be if let’s say the 2024 World Series is between the Orioles and the Diamondbacks? Two teams with little national relevance. Sure the Diamondbacks and Orioles not being flukes after seeing the abyss is a nice story. But Arizona does not care for baseball as much as Football and Baltimore is on the smaller side of markets anyways. Also the Presidential election would be around that time. If the timing is bad, we could end up with a Presidential debate on a World Series night and that game would get shifted to FS1 probably outside of the Phoenix and Baltimore tv markets.

It’s not just the teams. It’s the lack of stars and storylines. Those teams have no household names. There’s no reason to watch unless your a fan of the teams which is why the rating were so low this year. 20 years ago the league was full of stars. Now it’s defenitely not

@@youwereprettylasttimeisawy1227not true at all I don't know any NBA or NFL teams, or players and I am an American. I think International basketball, soccer, Volleyball and baseball in international tournaments are much better to root for than some domestic leagues like NBA and MLB. Baseball may not be well popular anymore in the United States but it's hugely popular in Asia and some Caribbean countries and Latin American countries close to 66 million people in Japan millions more in South Korea most like 100 million in East Asia watch Japan vs Korea in the World Baseball classic. Even though Japan Soccer and Volleyball are the popular sport baseball is third and basketball. Baseball may decline heavily in the United States but in other parts of the world it will remain hugely popular.

Rangers vs Diamondbacks World Series ratings of course would be low because they're not the teams you expected to be there... also no players that can attract casual fans like Mookie Betts, Ronald Acuña Jr and Shohei Ohtani, Bryce Harper or Aaron Judge are the most popular. But hey we saw Rangers with their first title in franchise history..

It’s less the pace of game and more the business side of it. It’s expensive to go to games and most games are on cable while less people have cable. Added their package and blackout policy is terrible. Their marketing and branding haven’t been great either. Unless their willing to make big business moves to try and grow their fan base and make it more accessible to people who haven’t been interested it’s going to be the same.

@@adanalyst6925I think we need to adress the mechanics of the game that are leading to it's downfall. Not the new changes, but the lack of changes needed to keep pace with today's entertainment landscape.
You can have high action, high scoring
You can have high action, low scoring
But you can't have low action, low scoring.
There is is no real story lines they can create when u have 162 games. Nothing feels important. The sport itself doesn't lend to good anticipation. Meaning, every game can feel disjointed, one game doesn't influence the next.
With all this, the social interaction decreases with baseball events. With other sports, you bring new fans in by being able to explain the what's at stake and what are in game scenarios. Baseball, u can't do that. U don't see half the action. U don't know where the ball is being pitched. No one keeps stats on them to know the a certain batter swings mid high, so it needs to go low. Never hear these convos. So causal fans say fk it. That's where the sport starts to die.

That's correct! But idk why all the news headlines are focusing on the world series numbers and not mentioning the regular season numbers, the average viewership per game in the regular season was good and increased in 2023 over 2022, Same goes for average Live attendance per game as well it had a 9% increase which is the biggest since 30 years, i don't care if the world series viewership numbers were an all time low, a 9 million on average per game is still good, especially considering the 2 teams aren't exactly the most popular in the league

The blackout for local games is absolutely killer... I dont live near the ballpark, and I dont have cable, so i would have to stream games on a shady streaming website. Radio is an option for $30 a year, but id like to be able to just flip on tv to watch my local team.
Also, im not a fan of the rule changes. They should have just enforced existing rules of pace of play, instead of charging phantom balls and strikes. Combine all that with the politics and contreversies, and theyve just about lost me. The owners need to wake up and remove their bum commissioner.

I think “baseball” is doing fine, youth participation is fine and local ratings tend to be really good. Anecdotally most people I know enjoy going to baseball games even though they might never watch it on TV. People like rooting for their “home” team, and teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are popular as ever.
However “MLB” is not doing great and really hasn’t been since the strike. Their games are behind a paywall, stars aren’t marketed, and the league doesn’t get much press. People root for their home team, but it’s uncommon that people follow “the league”. Three true outcome max effort baseball made for a product that is less interesting to a casual.
So are they doing bad or good? Honestly, I don’t care. I enjoy the sport and it doesn’t bother me how they’re doing financially. I’m not their shareholder. Who knows, though.

Put a salary cap/floor so small market teams aren't glorified Triple A teams. MLB is losing small market fans. They have a star player for team control, and then they have to trade because they can't pay like a big markets. Rinse wash repeat. Its gets old. 9times outta 10 the team that wins the world series is top 10 in payroll. Ohtani alone is making more than 4 teams payrolls!! (without deferrals) its a joke for small market fans to invest time and money into a team. Unfair league

I can assure you that Kid's do play baseball. Recreational leagues, little leagues, school ball and select ball have full teams across the country. The MLB might be having problems selling seats but the Savannah Bananas do not. Banana ball is massively popular with kids on social media. The Bananas sell out every game.
