My greatest advice is to buy few pencils open stock and experiment with them, and find the line that you like more. After experimenting with many different brands and lines I would def say the Pablos and Polychromos are by far my favorites to use. As for the luminance I recommend getting the white and black pencils which are very opaque and worth to have in your collection, asides those I personally don't feel they're worth the price. Now as for the Derwent lightfast pencils, I've also tried them, they feel very similar to the luminance but not as good in my opinion, they are a bit more waxy and sticky and I personally thought they were ridiculously expensive also. I haven't tried Holbein yet because I read at multiple websites and forums that they were removed from some markets because they were toxic. I've also looked at many, many different video reviews of holbeins and they act very similar to water soluble colored pencils and that's honestly not what I am looking for, not to mention the price and how incredibly diffficult it is to get them. I think they have a beautiful color selection, and their pastels selection is stunning, but right now, I'm just not willing to go that extra mile to experiment with them. I have a full set of pablos and polychromos and honestly that feels absolutely more than enough for me. I also have a full set of albretch durer watercolor pencils that I love and complement with, and I'm very happy with them.
PS - I have also tried and experimented with allot of low budget colored pencils, and I'd highly recommend the Giotto Natural line, I was so impressed with their quality! Very smooth, highly pigmented and easy to layer and blend. There's only 36 colors available and they're not easy to find, but for everyone reading this - if you do find them, buy them! They're ridiculously cheap for the results they produce. I have them and I absolutely adore them!

Prismacolor are fine if you don't sharpen to a long point. The way the come in the set is the best way to stop the soft lead crumbling

The strenght of expensive colored pencils is, that you can mix them all together to get your desired result. I like to mix the Polychromos, the Luminance and the Derwent Drawing. I can recommend the Derwent Drawing, because their palette consists only of muted earthy tones.

Thank you very much. Been wanting to get some luminance but already have the pablos. Since lightfastness doesn't concern me i feel more that i am set. Yay! Esp since i can't stand the softness of prismas your review def made my mind up.

    Holbein's
Holbein's are definitely more expensive but also better.

Good to know! Thanks for sharing. When I was looking at prices I saw that a set of 12 Holbein pencils were around $45, which is about the same but I've never drawn with them. So I decided to do a separate video about those when the time comes. 🙂 I appreciate your note. PS. I just looked it up again and you're right Holbein is even more!! 🫣 Insane . I wonder how they feel working

@@veronicasartI was gifted (!) the Holbein pastel CP set … would love to hear your thoughts. In my limited experience so far, I find them dreamy & creamy as many have said … although I’m not sure they always “play well with others” (i.e. other brands). The biggest concern, for me and I think for many, is that their lightfastness testing process and results lack transparency. YMMV. Anyway, a second vote for Holbein - thanks.

The Prismacolor are widely available in the US. They are not widely available in Europe.

I thought Holbein were the most expensive? I have a lot of top brands but can’t justify the Holbeins🥰

Thank you for this illuminating review. A few weeks ago I finally purchased a set of 40 Caran d'ache luminance colored pencils. I've wanted some for so long. Could you please do a review on the Derwent Lightfast colored pencils? Thanks 😊

Just to clarify - the Derwent Drawing Pencils are actually a separate line within the company’s product offerings. With a limited, muted palette of 24 shades and a soft but durable formulation, they are favored by many, especially nature artists. You may in particular have heard of the Derwent Drawing Pencil Chinese White as an open stock item; it well-known as the preferred white pencil of a large number of colored pencil artists. Hope this helps
