As an Irish-American but, to paraphrase Judge Daniel Cohalan, an American first, I wonder if, had my countrymen knew that by buying Irish Republican bond certificates all they would be doing was contributing to the security of Eamon DeValera making for himself a lucrative career outside of politics and government (ie the Irish Press newspaper/s), they would have bought any at all. Hindsight's 20/20 of course.

Thank you for this. I like your unbiased viewpoint. Would you have any information/photographs etc on the first Irish consulate (and its consul) that was set up in New York in November 1919. He travelled with De Valera around the country as well as helping Irish immigrants, promoting Irish industry, forging trade links between Ireland and the US as well as helping to set up a direct shipping line between the two countries (contrary to the wishes of the British). He is mentioned in Dail records and many times in de Valera's archive. However, he is not mentioned by historians despite the success of the consulate and his own personal popularity amongst the Americans with whom he came in contact. HIs name is Diarmaid Fawsitt and I am researching his life. Many thanks in advace.

Thanks for checking out the episode. I don't have any information on Fawsitt but if you haven't done so already I would suggest emailing Ruairí Lynch. He is a grandnephew of Diarmuid Lynch and has done extensive research on the Irish-American side. I have contacted him a number of times and he is always glad to share what he has researched. His website is diarmuidlynch(dot)weebly(dot)com

The image used in the outro is Dublin in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising.

Five million dollars is a hell of a lot to keep under your mattress, I agree.
