As a Vancouver-born and bred human, I cannot get over these numbers! I'm 40 now, but all of us in our early 20s were able to modest apartments for under $800. It's wild to hear that people (including us!) are routinely spending $2K+ on 1 bedroom apartments.

I guess one important question that you're missing out on is 'how long have you lived in that place?'
Vancouver has rent control which can be a game changer. My roommate (the primary lease holder) pays 1480$ rent for his 2 bdrm place in KITSILANO because he's had rent control for 9 years. I pay 1000$ as a subletter/roommate so he only pays 580ish with utilities.

As some people wrote below, lots of money comes from other places, but tons of folks from here also have nice cars. These cars can be afforded by people who have stuck in their careers for a while and now earn $100k+ (aside from the bugatti, that's crazy money you need to have) but there are also tons of business owners here in Canada who do very well for themselves. People do make the money to afford those things here, but just not on average 🚗

I did the smart thing and saved for two years so i could buy my condo in Richmond. now 20 years later I'm still paying 800 a month for mortgage and condo fees combined heat hot water and electric included 905 sq ft . Nice video Adam. You should do a video of people who rented this year, the rent has skyrocketed. 2100 apartment must be gone for 2500ish... would love to see that.. otherwise I would feel I am the only one who is paying so much for similar apartment than others in this video :D

locals that lived in Vancouver for their whole lives spend about $1500 for a 900 sq ft apartment.
the people who move here spend more cause they don't know what they are doing.

I've seen places listed for RENT in newer buildings in Vancouver for $4,500 a month. What kid of JOB do you have to have to be able to afford that? Renters are really getting screwed when the idiotic banks tell people they "can't afford" a $1,050 a month mortgage, when they're *already* paying $1,600 in RENT. How does that make any sense?
