Or was it a corrective to the lack of historical research that Eric Mason, amd Jemar Tisby that were unable to document the greater efforts of Abolitionists like Jonathan Blanchard who created a college that moved quickly ti educate freed slaves and Black people whom othe colleges like Harvard University refused to admit. Amd even once they were admitted made their academic experience odious. No romanticized here Wheaton College got it right.

Justin Giboney continues to be one of the most balanced and important voices in the American church. The Gospel Coalition would be wise to have him back regularly.
As a white male in a midwestern Assembly of god church I sure Wish that this could be heard in our congregation because it is so true however I think people in our church would think that with the speaker is saying is untrue

I am not the sharpest but let me chime in with what I got from this. I believe that he is simply asking people to think critically about today’s issues. Use the Bible as a way to validate or invalidate things like CRT. Simply put some of these theories have truth in them and lies in them. The lazy take is to toss everything out or to receive everything without analyzing to see if it is Biblically true.

Unfortunately the lazy route is also the easy one, which is why so many take it.
Should we also evaluate Mormonism and Buddhism in light of Scripture and keep the true parts while we toss out the false? The problem is that, like other religions and ideologies, CRT is a worldview that coheres around a set of propositions that can't be examined independently for their truth value. Without the foundational theory the propositions don't make sense. This type of selective knowledge inexorably leads to some form of synchrotism. The historic church has never been fond of this practice. I think we would we wise to follow her wisdom.
@@jeffmarkus I try to see everything from a Biblical perspective. Naturally seeing things from a Biblical perspective does not make me popular among any group. As a Christian I believe Jesus provides the only solution to our issues. I believe the real issue is found in the fact that people do not love their neighbors enough to care about the problems they try hard not to see. I could care less about CRT but what I can’t do is go against the command Jesus gave..love your brother... This is not a intellectual conversation, this is a conversation about love in action. I don’t know about you but I need God’s help to love people correctly because my version of love is self centered at best.

@@jeffmarkus that's a bad faith argument / false equivalence. crt is an academic, secular theory; buddhism / mormonism are religious belief systems that have implications for your eternal soul. very different. a better comparison would be like psychology. should we use theories and methods of psychology or any social science, to the extent that they are in alignment of the Word? i don't see why not. churches uses all kinds of organizational theory that are not in scripture to organize ppl and lead ministries.

I wish that people could begin to see the fact that racism is NOT a philosophical or political choice; it is a choice between good and evil. If you choose to be racist, leaning any which way, then you have chosen the side of evil and darkness. I'm not making this up; these are God's rules.
I agree that racism is a moral issue, not a philosophical one. However, CRT largely redefines racism by eliminating the conscious, intentional responsibility that the individual bears for the hateful act of descrimination on the basis of skin color. That revised definition is not the sin of racism as it's understood biblically.

He sounds like he was taking shots at Voddie's message at the end there. I was surprised for the first 2/3 because I saw he's with the '& campaign', then the last third came in about social justice...he doesn't get it. He's trying to defend his worldview and what he thinks social justice means....kinda what I expected TBH, it's still disappointing.
100% his approach is more thoughtful than Voddie. I love Voddie and would agree in principle with what he says mostly but I feel like Voddie is leaning a little bit more towards believing the lie that even if you want to learn more or see the good parts in what the "other side, CRT" is saying, you are a fool or perhaps not in Christ? I don't believe that is the best approach nor helpful. You are just creating thicker walls in the name of..... well the gospel is made to offend people. Yes the core message but not using it as a dotted line weapon.

Oh you mean "appears to be nicer" or "he displays more compassion" or "is more christian-y". What does the Bible say about showing favoritism to the poor at the expense of the rich? What does God say about using his name to advance other issues? I think he speaks pretty clearly to both of these. "But that doesn't appear christian-y."
Then "christian-y" is the problem here.

@@wishweknew2800 I think we are a bit sensitive here. I'm a fully inspired, literalist when it comes to Scripture but I think we get all tend to get excited when someone gives a strong word without apology in this day and age. Voddie is one that has a gift for that. I love it too because we need to be preaching the whole counsel of God. However, since this is a social issue, not clearly only a closed-hand doctrine of the faith, I don't know if this is part of the "tickling of the ears", the Bible is clear and CRT is clear and they are in conflict no doubt. I'm just giving Justin the benefit of the doubt that we need to be cautious and alert in these things. God's justice does include social elements to it as the gospel is related to the individual and to groups (the church) but we all tend to try and make things cut and dry relating Orthdoxy (which is black & white) to Orthapraxy (which may differ without being in error). I would spend my time going after those who clearly are using CRT as their religion. That's all I'm saying.

I really appreciated this food for thought. Lying is a sin, and we need to be willing to face that in all its guises. There are many things we can agree on here. Very much appreciate the affirmation of the sanctity of life both pre-born and born.

While I don’t think children should be accountable for the sins of their fathers, Christians should seek to lift up those oppressed and call for the changes in governance that unfairly impact people.
That's why I oppose minimum wage laws and the welfare state.

Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy all clearly state that because of God's nature, He "will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon the children's children unto the third and the fourth generation." KJV If you don't think your parents' sins are also weighing into your own condemnation, then you are clearly rejecting the Bible's teachings. This theme is repeated in scripture at least a dozen times nearly verbatim.
While Justin Giboney may speak eloquently, he is actually doing the very thing he is speaking about; he is actually promoting subtle lies that serve his agenda. Now I know many will read this and be outraged, but I want you to consider what he said and compare it to scripture, because we are called as Christians to study/search the scriptures to rightly divide it and see if something is true (Acts 17:11, 2 Timothy 2:15). In presenting his case about the "lies" that serve us, Giboney has actually made grievous, divisive errors that need to be pointed out:
1) The accusation of lies is a serious one according to Exodus 20:16, Colossians 3:9, Ephesians 4:25, and many other verses. To make this sweeping accusation, but to be vague about who you're directing this accusation to is subtly dishonest because it points to a group of people that can be unnamed (though the speaker knows who he is speaking of) while labeling them "those that would be against racism and labeling anyone in the church that speaks on it Marxist." The problem with that way of defining it is the fact that he doesn't take the time to address the fact that Christians (because he is speaking of Christians in the church) that address this issue want to keep it Biblical. So in doing so, they examine most of the talk about racism (from those like Jemar Tisby, Eric Mason, Thabiti, and a host of others) has its solutions in unbiblical ways more than Biblical. So to generally accuse Christians who rightly examine the CRT-woke nature of addressing racism as those that lie to "serve them" is itself a lie.
2) Bringing up the sins of the past in an unsaved world is a great way to stroke the emotions. In the year 2021, why do Christians in the church bring up the past as if there hasn't been any progress in the last hundred years? And since the world is unsaved, why would you expect perfect progress since these folks need the gospel (Romans 10:14-17) because of the depths of their sins (Romans 3:9-20, Ephesians 2:1-3, 1 John 3:4, Jeremiah 17:9, etc.). I work at a bank; Jim Crow laws, redlining, etc. are illegal. No government institution has a system set in place today to stop anyone from getting loans or a job. Stop bringing up the sins of yesterday to try to pin it on this generation as if they're responsible. There is no Biblical mandate for this unless you have specific evidence. (in addition, I can point out systemic sin in the world and show you who is behind it specifically, but TGC seem to belittle this sin in favor of racism. How about abortion? It is murder according to Exodus 20:13, Genesis 9:6, the end of Proverbs 6:17, and is shown as a grievous sin in Romans 3:15 and Matthew 5:21-22. And the millions of black babies killed in the womb over the past four decades promoted and done by abortion clinics, Planned Parenthood, and the platform of the Democrat party is wicked. I can literally show you the system that is behind this sin, but I can't find anyone to specifically show which system is promoting systemic racism. Is it the schools, government, law enforcement, etc.? Can you point to some specific examples?)
3) Using Jesus railing against the Pharisees and then insinuating that the Christians that address racism contrary to CRT are the same, is a lie itself. Not every Christian in every church is against discussing racism. And by the way, racism as a word isn't even Biblical, it is hatred and partiality (based on 1 John 3:15 and James 2:1-13). God has made all of one blood all nations according to Acts 17:26. And since all Christians are one in Christ according to Galatians 3:28, Colossians 3:11, Ephesians 4:4-6, and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, we need to be reminded about the partiality and prejudice in the church by reminding each other our position in Christ, and the power to live that out (in and outside of the church) through the leading of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18) and the truth of God's Word that sanctifies us (John 17:17). Notice this gentlemen didn't reference any of these verses that tell us as Christians how to address this issue in the church.
4) Isn't it ironic that this gentlemen want to discuss racism in the church, but he has not problem by saying "white nationalism" is in the church? What a sweeping statement to make about the churches in America as a whole. And isn't it ironic that those saying they're addressing racism (and others aren't) always mention "black" and "white" in terms of "blacks" being "victims" in the church while "whites" being "oppressors." Again, this is vague language and not specific. It's a sweeping accusation based more on the past and a narrative given outside of the church. Does this sin exist in and out of the church? Absolutely, but making a sweeping generalization is a logical fallacy. We are to judge all things in a righteous manner (John 7:24, Matthew 7:1-5) because judgment starts at the house of God (1 Peter 5:17), but how can you righteously judge this man's accusations he gave against the church if we don't know the pastors, leaders, or even church members that are doing these things? And if this is so wide-spread, shouldn't TGC reach out to the churches that they know are doing these things and exhort them to practice church discipline (Matthew 18:15-20)?
In conclusion, there are so many other things that I don't have time to address, but this much is true, TGC has a position against racism that seems to only use Bible verses (in a twisting sort of way) to promote solutions that aren't Biblical at all (again, read Tisby, Mason, and others that do promote an unbiblical way of addressing this issue). The God-breathed, sufficient Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) is a solution for any sin problem in and out of the church, but when you hear little or none of it from the loudest voices against it, then others that believe God and His Word will speak against it. That doesn't make Christians lying to serve their own purposes, it makes those Christians examining and demonstrating that the solution is in God's Word and the gospel.

I was thinking these same thoughts as I was listening to his rant. If there is any true racism going on in the church now, may we always use God’s Word in the right context, so we don’t misuse God’s Word and falsely excuse God’s people, by making general accusations against them, specifically when he mentions lies Christians are believing; WHAT LIES ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? And sir, give Christians specific examples of these lies. Generalizations will never solve any problem. I believe this guy has beef with the racist world out there, (world) not with God’s people (church) And by the way, Christians will ALWAYS have grievances against people outside the church no matter what color your skin is, This is a fallen, broken world we live in. Utopia is coming for us when Jesus returns. This guy would do better for God’s people if he would teach us the Bible.

It's sad many professed Christians don't believe the supernatural, sanctifying, and sufficient Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17) about any moral matter, even prejudice and partiality. Instead they lean on their own understanding or get caught up with man-made philosophies, which Proverbs 3:5 and Colossians 2:8 speaks against. I am genuinely curious why it is there are many Christians that seem, for lack of a better term, to freak, at Marxism? I think Gibiney makes a good point about evaluating worldviews in light of Scripture. Dumping what is unbiblical and what is embracing. How is that Marxist?
@@calebberens9692 Please go and read my original comment in its entirety: I explained the problem I had with Gibiney's presentation. And the reason Christians "freak" at Marxism is because it is an ungodly view. Read Colossians 2:8 and 2 Corinthians 10:5; we are not to evaluate or even embrace the sins of the world based on ungodly ideologies. You can't embrace worldly ideologies and pick the parts that are true and then say it's a useful tool. We have the absolute truth of God's Word that sanctifies the Christian (John 17:17), so why would I need to promote half-truths that contain half-lies?
And this is the problem with this social justice movement; they want to embrace aspects of Marxism, mix it in with Christianity, then scoff when someone notices it is from a Marxist perspective. This is syncretism, which the Apostle Paul addressed in the epistle of Colossians. And how did he address it? By showing that Christ has the preeminence in our lives because of who He is and what He did (Colossians 1:13-23). Christians are always to be aware of any system of thought that either contradicts or subtly tries to blend itself with a Biblical worldview. And we are to speak against it.
These comments are proof that either nobody was really paying attention to what he was saying, or they're actually ignorant enough to think that racism is no longer prevelant in society.

Centuries of racism aren't going to disappear just like that when we've only started undoing those systems in the 60s. Colored television was starting to become mainstream when the Civil Rights Act was passed. That's not ancient history. And interracial marriage wasn't legalized until the 70s. The freaking 70s. That's basically yesterday in the grand scheme of history. Remember, Evangelicals called MLK a "woke Marxist." Those claims didn't age well, did they?

Max Aplin, too much extremism where if someone goes against your narrative it is common practice for it to get ugly. I have listened to hours of Dr. Tim Keller and he is being painted as a cultural “marxist” for advocating social justice but along Biblical lines. Trying to help those in need is now leading to communism. Have never heard anything aberrant out of Dr. Kellers’ teaching. He preached on the levitical code regarding the rules Israel lived under. No freebies for the poor. Farmers were commanded to leave a portion of the field to be harvested by poor people. They had to work the field to tend to their needs. Shalom…
Except Keller's view on social justice don't fall along biblical lines. He has been a great teacher on all other things except culture, race, and justice.

@@michaelbrickley2443 Yes, the Bible - both Old And New Testaments - is full of instructions to help the poor. And yet we want to do this in a way that doesn't make people lazy.
As I see it, a problem often found in right-wing politics is lack of compassion for those in need. And a problem in left-wing politics is lack of acknowledgment of personal responsibility. As Christians, we need to fight hard to get the right balance between these things and to adjust our views if we think they could be improved.

For someone who refers to straw man arguments as lies he sure does not stray away from the practice (4:30). These are very revealing times, and the Gospel Coalitions “truth” is on full display.

Click on the blue 4:30 and it takes you right to his straw man argument. The fact that he is standing up a straw man is not a matter of opinion. It is what he is objectively doing.
This entire speech was centered around sins of the past and drawing parallels between white evangelicals and the Pharisees, all the while offering nothing in the way of what to do going forward to further the Kingdom of God.
It concerns me that he and, presumably, The Gospel Coalition as a whole, embrace theories and systems so inextricably linked to Marxism and Socialism.

Thoroughly unhelpful in my opinion.What does this have to do with the Gospel and the heart of the reborn man? This man sounds angry and is focused on race and class. Highlighting inequality and division. I heard nothing about an identity in Christ (outside of race and grievance) as the solution, only highlighting the nature of fallen man in the world. Speaking on problems without presentjng solutions is just venting.

I make my comment as a middle eastern descendent, 1st generation Australian born, reformed Christian. What is the point exactly of this talk? Yes America has a bad history of slavery, racism etc. But look how far it has come? Where in any of the existing systems and institutions today can be found any policy or rules that reflect racism? Is Jesus's sacrifice not for all sin?
Are the sins and systems of the past completely emptied from the present systems in America when you see the problems in the African American community today? Does Jesus's sacrifice for our sin not also call us to work out our salvation in fear and trembling by loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30) with knowledge and discernment (Phil 1.9) of the historical situation American Christians find themselves in? In that light, this talk points to the truth of the situation that helps Christians move forward.

Yeah like a lot of pastors nowadays prophesying without any use of scripture. Doesn’t mean it’ ain’t biblical. Where’s the gospel and scripture in your comment?
So something is invalid unless it explicitly explains the Gospel or uses the direct quotation of scripture? Biblical themes are present throughout his entire talk, but more importantly, he probably didn't feel the need to directly quote scripture to convince people that God cares deeply about justice and the oppressed because it is so commonly talked about in the OT prophets. Read Amos.
To be fair, this is a "talk" about politics, not a sermon meant to give exegesis.

He should take his own advice and talk about how modern day calls for racial justice are predominantly built off of strawmen as well. TGC advertises this as both sided, yet he spends the vast majority of this talk on only one side.
I would add that if he wants to talk about racial injustice, then speak about SPECIFIC instances and who perpetrated them. Putting out broad-brushed accusations of systemic racism is NOT helpful. Has there been racism in America? Of course, nobody denies that. Btw, to be more specific, Democrats are the party of slavery, Jim Crow, the KKK, Robert Byrd, opposition to MLK and the Civil Rights movement, aborting over 30% of all black babies, being anti-school choice and thus entrapping poor black kids in bad schools, and incentivizing unwed births that leads to fatherless families (the root cause of most current black maladies). Also, be specific by acknowledging the fact that great progress has been made in race relations (or at least until 2008 when Obama seemed to enjoy fanning the flames of racial division for political gain). Again, the speaker needs to be SPECIFIC. Broad accusations of racism and hypocrisy aren't going to win over many of the people who he unfairly accuses of racism when the overwhelming majority of them are also opposed to racism.

I just listened to this. More than once he used a pretty large strawman, which under normal circumstances isn't ideal, but in a piece highlighting the importance of truth-telling and also labeling hyperbole or strawmen as lies, it particularly stands out. He probably could clean up some of those and it would strengthen the talk.
But more fundamentally I don't think he takes seriously the fundamental differences in the conflicting worldviews. I would argue that the reason one might, or should be sounding the alarm about CRT and Marxism is precisely because they care about biblical racial justice and not because they're closet white supremacists. I would also argue that many of the men he mentions like Booker T. Washington would be 100% in that category as well were they here today (although I lack a time machine to bring them here, so obviously that's an opinion.) Does his framework account for that? It seems more like he thinks everyone should accept a little CRT and a little Marxism and if they don't it's because they're telling lies and don't care about racial justice. I find that very unpersuasive.

I’m not talking about what any other group of people didn’t do. I’m talking about what some churches in America are not dealing with and not talking about.
In 1845 the Southern Baptist convention was started based off a split and a disagreement about slavery. South Baptist conviction was started because of a desire to maintain slavery. Now today there hundreds of Southern Baptist churches who’s foundations were built on a lack of for all people. Historically in my own and other SBC churches in my area I’ve seen this. Churches not only built on racism but selfishness and a country club mentality. The problem is that churches did not build their foundations on Christ. That is a problem.
If a churches foundations are built on anything other than Christ, that church needs to take a good look at its core beliefs, values, and culture, and make sure they align with Christ. That goes for any church of any ethnicity of people.
If that’s CRC than I’m sorry, but any church (white, black, etc.) that has its foundations built on racism or anything other than Christ needs to reconsider it’s ethics and make sure it’s in alignment with Christ.

@@seekinggodfirst754 Thank you for asking, there are a number of ways (and please know that NONE of these excuses true racism and sinful bias that people treat others who are unlike them all the time): #1 It "fixes" racism with racism, or bias with bias (yet the Bible commands us not to show bias James 2:1, and also to "fight evil with good", i.e. forgiving an enemy), which leads to #2 CRT prevents reconciliation - the Oppressor can never be forgiven which is totally ungodly. God's good news of the Gospel is that ALL can be forgiven. When Jesus said "it is finished" He meant the debt was paid, all was accomplished for all sinners. CRT disagrees with Jesus in that regard. Grace is a gift from God because we are an undeserving people. We ought to look for ways to serve and love our neighbors in an effort to unify (without going against what God commands us to do) and not just cancel those we disagree with, as those that I would call “religious elites” aka “Christian Nationalists” are doing.

TGC has become very unhelpful on moving forward with grace. There was some good truth to this but also many facts he left out on race and responsibility. The very fact we have these conversations in public without fear is a good indicator white nationalism isn't the boogie man we make it out to be. The vast majority in the public seem to not have racial issues now as much as class issues which is just as un Biblical.

Even Martin Luther King Jr. believed & preached that - ‘you (all mankind) are not known for, identified by, nor are to be judged by - the ‘color of your skin’.
Your Personal - Individual - ‘Character’ (your personal behavior & words) identifies your ‘heart’, the Color of your skin - does not expose your hearts intent.
Skin-Color does NOT = Character.
It doesn’t matter WHAT color your skin is - God looks at your heart’s intent, God judges your heart.
Please stop ‘labeling’ people by their personal ‘skin-color’ - be Responsible for your own words and behavior, so that your ‘Character’ (NOT your ‘Color’) - exemplifies Jesus.
