I was at one of their gigs a few days ago, and normally I headbang a lot, but i just stood there the entire 2 hours in awe, without moving, basking in the Sunn. This gig was more physical and tangible than any moshpit I've ever been in, cause you feel the vibrations in your whole body. It's not a gig, its a fucking experience.
Everyone stands perfectly still. You don't need to headbang or dance, because you can't feel shit, I couldn't even see clearly because the air was vibrating like hell.
Could that cause you to get tinnitus?

But cheap foam plugs are enough to keep your ears safe. I removed them occasionally, and I didn't have buzzing or muffled hearing the next morning.
Everything sounded like an audiophile's heaven. Nothing too distorted, crunchy, lovable warm sound.

I've never experienced anything else that compared to seeing these guys live. They're loud...really, really loud but not in that painful way that some other loud bands are. It's different. The effect is sort of like sitting in an intense massage chair, you can feel the sonic vibrations in places you don't normally feel very loud music and it's somewhat unnerving yet also hypnotic. They're wearing those robes and there's smoke everywhere and you find yourself really anticipating that next dive-bomb swoop where it all just keeps being heavier.
They were so loud my drink was sliding around on the bar, no lie. I saw one guy literally running away in terror with his hands over his ears. All in all it was awesome and I wouldn't hesitate to see them again.

I remember watching this video and laughing my ass of thinking it was totally stupid and pointless. Today, a couple of years later, I really worship everything about this band, the sound, the riffs, and this kind of music overall. It really makes me sad when people watch 1 minute of a really low quality video, of music they now absolutely nothing about, and then dare to comment, criticize and judge the entire genre of music. Just like I did once. It's only a bad way of handling what you don't understand and cannot get your head around. And that's just fine. This music definitely isn't for everyone. But don't have the guts to be a dick about it. I know I was.
Maybe it will grow on me someday (?) there have been many things I didn't like at 1st that I caught up with later and I said "Oh that's what they were hearing" .. Sunn O))) definitely seems to have the love them or hate them appeal, just the fact that they get a strong reaction probably means that they are on to something. I guess it is different ...... just mark me as one that doesn't get it ...... kind of the empty canvass thing to be honest

it's real nice to sleep to those guys' music. despite everyone claiming that it sounds dark and vicious, it still makes me feel kinda comforted. like all of my thoughts and worries get blocked out by this wall of sound. love them ♥️
I listen a little differently. I put in good earbuds, headphones get too hot for me. I then lie down in a dark room, close my eyes and drift to the sounds. Like a meditation or emptying of the mind. I turn the volume down low enough so the sounds are not intrusive. Disjointed as much of noise is (think Merzbow). The wall of sounds floods over me and prevents my mind from wandering and focusing on anything but the sound. I suffer from anxiety so if i let my empty mind wander it will focus in on something bad. I find that this relaxes me so good! The sounds are recorded so loud and full that they are perfect for listening to at low volume. You do not miss a bit. In actuality it allows you to hear the patterns and the sounds underneath the sounds. I hope someone else finds this a useful tool in combating anxious thoughts. I usually go to sleep at night while listening to noise. Aggressive, ambient or whatever. My fave though is aggressive with a dark or ominous edge.

Who are hell are they ? At first I thought wow what a cool heavy guitar sound (it is pretty heavy) But after 5 and a half minutes of intro, without any change from the same barre chords over & over, I realized they have very little to say, musically or lyrically. Not exactly Rammstein. This "song" doesn't go anywhere or possess any type of dynamics. Our band, Sergeant Gypsy & The EYErish. Actually plays kick ass original songs for Christ sake. I wouldn't trade our chops for these guys....

I guess they call themselves a 'drone metal' band. I'm not sure how what they do qualifies as metal, but it's interesting. They're a niche band, for sure... you really have to be in the mood for what they do. It's interesting stuff, but I'm not sure how much droning I need in my life.
This was the "Grim Reaper" band that I was referring to. I love their amp set up and that is a pretty Les Paul, but I wouldn't trade one of my songs for one of their's. This isn't really even a song honestly. "Drone" is a good label but I bet they sound like this all the time. I try to make each of our songs sound different from each other.

It's definitely an acquired taste. You have to think of it more as "sound art" rather than music. You're meant to feel the vibrations, the atmosphere etc.

I can't believe it is not a joke
I've watched this video so many times and I finally got to see Sunn O))) live recently. The aesthetic of the green and the riff they played here (HellO)))ween) it's just all so amazing. Seeing them live was indescribable though. Like nothing else I've ever experienced. I had thought during the show that the voice of God must have a similar effect
for people who are new to this band, it may look super strange to you, and I'll give it to ya it is strange. it's the weirdest thing I've ever seen, but it's so hypnotic and amazing. It may seem like a few guys just playing random stuff on guitars, but it's not that at all. These guys are amazing in their own right. In normal metal concerts you headbang or mosh too, but in one of these guys concerts, you're so hypnotized by the act and the fog. It's truly amazing, I'd check it out.

WowGreatJob actually there is a member of sun 0))) who plays the trombone. His name is Gary and if you look closely you'll see him. He isn't as commercial friendly as the rest of the guys so he hangs to the back a lot.
I get it, it's more of a live show. You have to feel their sounds resonate through your body in a live setting.
I came back home in amazement from seeing Sunn O))) live for the first time, and showed my family a little clip I caught on my cameraphone. They all just burst out laughing!!! How dare they! As they say, "you had to be there". I saw Sunn O))) at the Cockpit in Leeds UK quite a few years back, and still it remains a firm favourite live experience of mine. :)

There's something beautiful about just touching those strings and making that wonderful squall appear.
Sunn and minimalistic music like this convey a sense of nothingness. It is emotionless in my opinion. Some have even went so far as to say drone and minimalism is very fascist because of the constant repetition kinda like how commercials are used. I love this band and many more like it. Perfect for meditations and just general thoughts on how pointless almost everything is.
