Last September I started walking to lose some weight. After three weeks I bought a cheap backpack and a couple of bags of sand. Every time I lost a kilo of body weight, I put a kilo bag of sand into the back pack. I started at 247 lbs. currently I weight 184 lbs. I do on average 15.000 steps a day. I no longer wear the backpack on every walk but I now do a lot of skipping and body weight exercises like push ups, squats and kettlebell exercises. Feeling pretty good at the moment.
how's it going now? Good I hope
Great job!
Congrats!! I just started walking 3 miles a day with my dog, weight training, and body exercises while intermittent fasting (16/8). I lost 14lbs in 20 days and still going! Wish me luck.
I commented something similar in another post. The main thing is to keep it enjoyable, which is the whole point of walking over running. If you make walking miserable, then you might as well be running.
@@jakemccoy this is key. You must enjoy any exercise
Make sure to hang around for the tips on getting your steps up at the end of the video xx
Glad I stayed. That tip has changed my world for the better 🙃
15 degree incline walk will double the calories burnt. Fairly easy but more boring on treadmill obviously
Thank god for those tips, it will make it sooo much easier!
Haha, sound😂😂😂
You can't go giving out sound tips like that for free!

@@JoeDelaneyy damn a reply from big joe himself! yeah it is, the dynamics kinda change when youre in a club/pub though, you can make a social group out of thin air pretty quickly if you just speak to absolutely everyone.
its interesting because if you approach people in the day, its almost more weird if youre doing it as a duo like you and tommy. like youre out with your mate just tryna pick up birds?
rather than on your ones going about your day and saying iya.
One more thing to note here is that, when you do high intensity cardios you tend to feel more hungry and eat those calories back (and more), but low intensity cardio like walking do not have the same effect. Yes if you do it outside - which you should if the weather is suitable - you might get thirsty, but most likely not that hungry.
Yup lost 10 lbs just walking daily for a month. After walking I just have some fruit and intermittent fast for the rest of the day. If I was doing HIIT
I WOULD BE STARVING and eat a lot more
I've found walking to be great for recovery too. It doesn't make sense to go from sitting on a chair like a sloth 95% of the time to full out explosive ape mode for the other 5% of the time. You need light/medium forms of exercise to balance everything out, in my opinion. Also, if you work at home like I do, it's the perfect way to get some fresh air and a change of environment, while also getting exercise. It can be a great reset for the mind too.
i fully agree . love your comment...
I think the main benefit of walking is it’s an easy way to burn calories without increasing hunger.
I’m 62 and don’t give a damn about being “shredded”. IMO that’s what younger people fall for, for all kinds of reasons. I walk with a weighted backpack and use dumbbell workouts to 1. help stay out of the dr. office. 2. to maintain my 175lb athletic frame. 3. so that I can still be active at 75 and not immobile.
My grandfather used to tell me "motion is lotion" he was in the navy and woke up and did push ups and exercised every morning. I'm now 39, I have 8 steel rods in my back. I walk/run 6-10 miles daily and I can say it's the only thing that keeps me going... keep doing what you're doing sir!
what's an IMO?

Walking I found to be the most managable, it was easy to keep steps consistency, while it isn’t as easy to do the same exact cardio everyday to keep a steady weight loss. Walking to get shredded worked for me but I was a college student with a lot of free time.
I wear a backpack with a 20 lb dumbbell inside on hikes
Was 300+ lbs 5 years ago am 180 now using low carb diet. Also lift 1 to 2 times a week I'm. 62 years old and feel amazing
The production quality in this is blowing my mind - animations and nicely laid out information elevates this video so much

Slight disagree: I think walking is the best solution long term because I've just noticed that more intense cardio tend to exhaust people to the point where they just stop at some point so even though you burn more calories quickly you still end up losing out on it in the long run.
He literally made this point in the video.
@@zg1920 at what point in the video does he say that walking is ultimately the best way of losing weight? Timestamp please.
@@nicholasfry4253 between 5:35 - 6:20 if you listen to what he says and read the text on the screen you will see that general point being made.
@@zg1920 At no point does he say that it's the overall best solution so you are flat out wrong. He said it's good for some, that's it.
@@nicholasfry4253 your getting lost in the forest and not seeing the trees. The general spirit of your point is there. This was soooo helpful...... Just the right info need, which is very difficult to find but so easily explained. Thanks mate 😊👏👌👍
I appreciate the time to analyze the differences. Many RUclips sites claim that just walking will do the job for everyone.

20k steps every day for a month right now. I have good results (fatloss). However: the time needed is incredibly annoying. I spend around 3 hours a day.
As far as I can tell, 30 minutes of jogging (11 km/h) would reduce 553 kcal (compared to 150-200 kcal when walking 30 min).
That's a lot more manageable. Due to spinal chord and knee problems that I had a few years ago, I chose to not overdo it and start with walking.
I have to say: It works very well, but as I say: Very time-consuming.
As mentioned above: Im currently overweight. Therefore I consider walking superior right now. But in a few kg down the road, I will mix in some more jogging. Just to reduce the time.
A pro that I noticed: the hunger levels are not exploding as when I am jogging for a longer duration.
Fill up empty plastic bottles with water and fill a backpack to your ability. Weighted walking up and down hills is a full body workout. You don’t even have to do it outside if you’re self conscious, just move around for an hour while you watch tv carrying that kind of weight.
@@Rajamak This! Before I lost 128lbs, I walked in circles in the backyard, all while carrying buckets full of gravel. Lost a ton of weight, plus I got shredded!! All without going to a gym.
Treadmill with slight incline…or a indoor bike. I got a mix bike in December it works well. I have a lot of joint issues as well.
@Joseph Lucas I feel you! I had 17,500 steps per day in February. Be careful though: I felt my achilles sinew (?) after that month for 3 weeks. Don't overdo it, just because it's simply walking.
But it really helped with the weight. Currently Im doing just 10k a day. A lot easier to implement it into my daily life.
I don't know your line of work, but maybe you could schedule the bulk of your business calls to fall into that time frame. Also, add some intellectual value by listening to audiobooks.
But you may have already considered this or are even implementing it already to render your perception of walking more enjoyable overall.
Really nice evaluation of the relevant considerations!
Walk more really does cover it. I've always found the 10k steps per day mantra pretty myopic. 10,000 steps for some people is insurmountable, for others it's a shift at work. As a WFHer even hitting 5k in a day can be a ball ache, but I do notice a difference on the scale when I walk significantly over my daily average steps.
People who want to make walking a lifetime habit should start with one mile everyday for a week, and then go up from there.
I started using a standing desk and a walking treadmill. 10-15k steps is pretty easy to achieve.
Great video. To the point, no sales pitches or sponsors, understandable metrics, tips, etc. I wish more videos were like this.
Finally some good advice on how to get your steps in.

By walking … it sucked at first! … by walking and diet change I managed to go from 1/4 mile and needing a nap, to 4 mile walks or 30 minutes out / 30 minutes back = 1 hour total ish … 4 or 5 days a week now I am 215lbs … 61 yrs old
No bread, no sugar, minimal dairy cause I like cream in my coffee… I may not be “omg ripped” but who cares ?! I’m happy healthy and proud of what I have achieved … if being ripped is the only way you can be loved -- look for a better life seriously .. vanity is a killer
Good job!!
Nice. You proved this Bro wrong.
My fitness started with walking. Lost weight and felt great and then a I got a Fitbit and got really into the step count. That led to running to keep the intensity and now I do 5k runs three or four times a week and have a Garmin forerunner and am fitter than I have ever been. Getting 15,000 steps is now just part of my day and no effort at all. My son is obese and he has started walking to the river and back. I am 30 years older but no way he could run with me. Hoping his journey will echo mine although I was never obese.
You probably didn't have as much junk food in the house
Great video and good to see the difference between body types. On a personal note, my own situation is that I walk to and from my work Monday to Friday and it is 4 miles on the way in and 5.5 on the way home. I am able to keep this up for two main reasons. One, I use it as my transport and two, I am lucky enough to have my walk take me through a national park each way. Being emersed in nature is great at getting rid of the day before I get home. Walking is great, but yes it does require the time to put in.
Solid af vid. Such an underrated form of “exercise”. I lost a tonne of weight since the start of lockdown 2020 just from increasing step count so it definitely “works” but agree that formal cardio is far more time efficient
Very good video summarized and to the point all the time.

Loving the Joey d videos when I’m high. Appreciating those chilled vibes
One of the advantages of walking in terms of weight loss is that it doesn't trigger as much of a hunger response compared to other exercises. That makes it much less likely for you to undo the progress you made while walking compared to running.
It makes me hungry.
Love the animations on this.
Weighted walking up hills is a great full body workout. Re-fill plastic bottles with water and fill a backpack to your ability. That way you can always just pour it out if you get tired or injured. You can do this in the house too, just move around for an hour or so carrying weight while you watch RUclips. My 70ltr pack can comfortably hold 16 x 1.5 ltr bottles so you can get a great scalable workout as you get stronger.
Brilliant, thanks

Great breakdown mate
Love your vibe man
I enjoy walking and was able to take 4~5 hour walks twice a week and an hour walk on other days during the past year. My legs got shredded and well defined and I did lose weight overall. I was also doing weight training 5 days a week at a moderate level. It's an enjoyable activity for me that I look forward to. Running is a bit harsh on my joints so I tend to avoid it. Now that it's summer, I view my lawn mowing as exercise too and that makes it feel more beneficial in my head.
I detail my vehicles and my Fitbit, on my left wrist, still clocks it as zone minutes. Still hit the treadmill and dog walks every day. I even have 30° winter gear for dog walks. There's a local lodge some miles from me that is building a very small water park, it is tiny, but I've been trying to convince my husband that we should visit it weekly on season passes for regular exercise.
There's no excuse to not be genuinely active in my book.
That sounds very time consuming, but kudos to you for sticking to that regimen
@@AnEmerald Walking 5 miles at once isn't much hard. In a casual walk on the treadmill for me I can hit 3 miles in an hour, nother 35-40 minutes later and I hit 5 miles easy. I can't physically run, have to walk.

The first 50lbs I lost last summer, at 300lbs then, was just by walking. Of course I was eating better as well. Still sitting at around 250lbs currently, but I've gotten back in the gym, and I mix walking in with my weight exercises. I gotta get my eating straight though.

I walk 5 miles 6 days a week at 3.2 mph. I used to weigh 305lbs. I’m currently 245lbs and my goal is 190lbs by September… I used to be diabetic and now I’m not. I have high blood pressure and I’m trying to get rid of that.. I’m super dedicated and my journey is forever!
Congratulations! Keep going wishing you all the best.
@@alhana8293 thank you so much ☺️
If you aren’t doing it already set your treadmill to the highest on your incline it makes walking twice as hard. I lost about 30 pounds in two months I walk seven days a week about 2 1/2 miles at 3.7 to4 mph for about 40 minutes and when I get done I am soaking wet from head to toe lol!! Good luck to you on your fitness journey👍
I do 20k steps a day, 10k of them at work (retail) I make sure I hit the 10k by the time I leave work then its 5k to the gym and 5k back. Since this it has made cutting a LOT easier but you really have to make an effort, it's not as simple as a walk round the block of an evening lol. Podcasts help a lot.
i recently joined a gym that's 2 miles from my house, so walking back/forth 4 days a week...will see how this works as my main cardio
Great work

I have been walking 19k steps for the last couple of months plus a deficit and dropped quite a bit. Sitting at a 100kg muscular build, Im walking my dog most of the time, but it takes shit load of time out of my day. Im planning on dropping the steps down to 12-15k and doing cardio a couple of days instead.
Great video. Super motivating

another great one !!!!
Just put the treadmill on 15% incline and walk at like 3.5 to 4mph. Everyone can do it and it burns hella calories. Also remember, *never* hang on to the treadmill while walking. It defeats the purpose. You don't hang on to anything when you're walking in the streets. Don't cheat, you'll burn a lot less calories otherwise.
Oh shit I didnt even realize that, thanks man
Dude this is exactly it. This is my exact protocol that I use for cardio. If I'm starting a cut. I'll usually start with 10-15 min everyday and then add 5-10min to each session when I plateau losing weight. So simple but it does wonders
@@linkmeuplink its what I do as well but I put my hands on the treadmill lmao
Yeah but when walking outside I have fine balance but on a treadmill I swing wildly😅
@@ashham8859 Doesn't come naturally to me to walk normally on the treadmill, I always end up having my hands on the sides.
Always thorough and insightful advice, but that last tip was 👌 🚶
You could mention that walking with a weighted vest / chucking some jugs full of your favourite beverage in a backpack and going for a stroll is a pretty good varient for lighter people that find walking too easy for an effective method of cardio 👌
I used to put 20kg in my rucksack and hike....*** me my ankles and feet were screaming in agony. I gave that up. Maybe 5-10kg is ok, 20kg was too much strain.
Carrying buckets full of sand or gravel, will also shred you!
That last segment fuzzy delayed ending…it almost seemed like you were having a stroke…lol hilarious
Bang up the incline on the treadmill, or hill climbs for outdoors, add a weight vest (no more than an hour though) to take it futher, I live on an island so beach walks and hikes are daily for me to easily get past 16k steps and seem really enjoyable with them pods in
Inclines with a weight vest? How is that on your ankles?
around a year ago I started swimming and cycling for pleasure and to keep my higher-level CV system fit, and walking for primary calorie burn. much prefer throwing on a podcast and enjoying a walk for 90 mins in the evening than forcing out some HIIT session that feels like a chore. the whole "fitness lifestyle" can be mentally taxing relative to taking shit easier; walking reminds me to just relax and be at peace. anyway, nice vid~
very good points, joe. i take my dog on several walks per day and it helps burn calories, but i also do calisthenics daily. one size doesn't fit all, and for heavier people (i'm not one) it's a good way to begin exercise. people forget about the perceived, or even actual, difficulty of the exercise. i used to push myself with road cycling, but it made me ravenously hungry and wasn't that good for weight loss.
Beautiful video
best thing about walking for me is it gives me time to reflect and think.
Best video on this subject by far 👍
bonkers production quality
Bonkers... I appreciate this as a descriptive term.
I am making the deficit only by walking, i have lost 15 pounds in 4 months and i plan to lose much more by this method, the only downside that i see it's that it takes 1h and a half a day to do this, but its very easy to do, almost effortless and you don't starve yourself which is nice lol (i do 5km a day, about 7500 steps and 460 calories for my wheight 264.55lbs at around 30 % body fat)
I love walking. spare hour go for a stroll. It's a great free leisure activity.
Running....only from the mother in law
addicted to your vids atm
In the end it depends how much time you have and how quick you want to get the weight off. The main thing about walking as it doesn't burn much glycogen and it doesn't really increase your appetite. So if you walk for an hour every day(and it doesn't have to be exercise as such it could be sight seeing or just walking around/sight seeing) and you burn about 300 cal and then you just cut back your food intake by another couple of hundred calories you could lose a pound a and not really suffer that much or should I say stress your body that much. I know I tried doing a lot of swimming and cycling and just ended up knackered because really it's to do with the glycogen stores that that try as hard as you can they do get depleted. I hope this makes sense. What I found was the best was to go for a walk do some light cycling and swimming basically because I love both and some weight training too. In addition keep active rather than just lolling around. Just personal preference but it's something to think about.
This is the most critical point. Walking is often better than cycling or running purely because it doesn’t affect appetite as much. That’s the key to the magic of walking.
It's true. Sometime we are in such a rush we miss the easier/ steadier progress.
300 cal's from walking and from a calory deficit is 600 day
about 18,000 a month or about 5lbs fat loss.
Presto..EASY..LOL
Even half of that that's a steady 2.5lb fat loss every months.
3:38 I like to compare this with engine blocks of cars. A 3 liter engine uses more fuel than a small 1 liter engine
Ah yes, very good tip at the end, thanks for sharing 🙏 not all heroes wear capes :)

The video omits a few important issues. Role of hormones in fat gaining/burning (pure calories in/calories out is an outdated concept), injury risk walking vs running or any intense exercise, oxygen role in fat burning (differences in breathing when walking vs running or any intense exercise thus aerobic vs anaerobic).
This was a chill relaxing tutorial

If you have a backpack you can add weight to or a weight vest, the intensity and calorie burn can be increased. Walking uphill or stairs the same if you have terrain near you that will accommodate either of those. If you're overweight walking is not only easier RPE but significantly reduces risk of injury compared to running.
Thank you, Joe...
