@@PeePsImAnyeah, I’d say gender roles only become a problem if they’re forced. If I have to be a stay at home mom, that’s an issue. If I choose to be bc that’s the role I feel I fill best, that’s fine. Part of what can be so bad about it is that some people have very rigid ideas of what women do vs. what men do, and there’s no room for personal strengths or individual choice. If the roles are treated as general ideas rather than individual requirements, it can work out well. There were definitely some forced gender roles in the show though, as well as characters trying to tear them down.

This is something I’ve been hating about adulthood tbh. To make it more “mature” you gotta add violence, sex, and swear words. But to make things really more mature, you bring mature topics to the table. That’s why atla was so good! It did bring mature topics to the table and executed them amazingly. This is all making me roll my eyes and honestly making me angry

Maybe some blood or burns when its needed because nickelodeon had its own rules with showing injuries, but it's not going to be goreporn. Sokka being sexist is as important as Katara fighting against sexism. They are BOTH products of their culture. Sokka’s sexism was born from literally being told he had to protect his home because he was the only guy left in the village. He was too young to join the war but still the oldest child. He took that and internalised that.
Katara and Sokka showed us both sides of the trauma of sexism on both genders of kids.

Suki's entire introduction is thrown off too without Sokka's sexism...it's a big character flaw that I've always seen as coming from him having to be the man of the tribe (literally singular) since all the older men have left, and it's something he has to be humbled about. His sexism is also echoed in the Northern Tribe when Katara is trying to get trained. Also, yknow, Sokka is the buttmonkey and "look at the sexist idiot" can be an easy haha.
I don't see why it would have to be changed since it's very clearly not something the show is putting in a positive light.

this is giving me the vibes that the showrunners are insecure about adapting a cartoon that they think is childish, and are now overcompensating to show how "mature" they are without understanding the appeal of the original. It's also funny that they're showing their own immaturity by dialing down Sokka.

That toning down Sokka’s sexism really goes to show how much they don’t understand the character, in which Sokka isn’t sexist bc he hates women but bc he was raised believing that he needs to protect his sister along with other women who he cares about. They want to villainize him when he was just raised that way

      Exactly.
He's a fucking child at the start of the show. Literally 12/13 (or 14/15 whatever my point is he was very young and inexperienced life wise at the start of the show) so his mindset and opinions are almost entirety based on influences from his environment and how he was raised. So it makes complete sense why he would think that men are meant to be warriors/protectors and women aren't because that's how his specific community operated during his specific time as a kid.
Then once he leaves and experiences life outside of his bubble he realizes "oh shit I was wrong about this topic and women can in fact be just as good, sometimes even better, warriors as men are". Showing a flawed mindset and then allowing a character to grow with time is a great way to teach that type of lesson to kids/teens watching the show.

The OP live actions is an alternate timeline that oda wanted to do in the past for the anime but was already set on what he had, so he gave direction and guidance on what was good and what to fill in, I mean baroque works being introduced early was a great example, obviously they didn’t follow the anime but it was enjoyable and also garnered a new audience who might just go watch the anime. And 2. The entire character flaw was more or less resolved within the first like 5 episodes of the show. They stumble across a tribe of people who are protected by warriors who are women and sokka thinks he can beat them in a fight, but is immediately humbled (physically) and asks if they can teach him their ways. After that, he basically has nothing but respect for everyone.

Like, if you're adapting an existing series from one media to another, you should strive to keep as many things the same as possible because it is an adaptation of an existing story. You can change things when needed on a case-by-case basis, but you don't get free reign to just do whatever the fuck you want with it and I don't understand why the fuck any of these people would think otherwise.
If they wanted to tell their own Avatar story so fucking bad why didn't they pitch their own concept for a story set in the Avatar the Last Airbender universe featuring a unique cast of new characters, following an Avatar from well before Aang's cycle where they can have a full sandbox to do whatever they like. Instead they're going to try and adapt something we already had, already loved, into something new.

ATLA was already mature and took itself seriously. It was grounded, mature, and adult. Being mature and an adult doesn't mean you have to constantly bring out sex and violence, and it doesn't mean you swear and constantly pout.
You tell a story. You show, not tell. You know when to laugh, you know when to cry. To be a mature adult means you don't feel a sense of fear or embarrassment from consuming a good story. If one can't recognize the maturity and depth of the story being told and as presented, then you simply are not mature.
    As CS Lewis put it,
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Has it's issues but it's to me, one of, if not the best cartoon series there is in the west.

There is a lot of potential for showing darker things that were glossed over in the original series. The plot does revolve around a genocide and a hundred year long war spanning the globe. However, it would take some seriously robust writing to be able to capture the original charm of the series alongside grittier depictions of the conflict without some serious tonal dissonance. You kinda have to commit to one or the other to have a chance to succeed. The problem here is that they seem to be under the impression that the gritty is what the audience wants over the charm which could not be further from the truth. They probably have hope they can do both but from what I know of Netflix that's a foolish hope.

@@kylepessell1350 I agree with you to an extent. I think it can be done with expert writing and timing. Can't show the Airbenders getting wiped out and then cut straight to a comedic relief moment. But you CAN show those events with high action and dark results and then reel the audience back to a place of comfort/familiarity and then mix in some light-hearted fun or banter, this is done in almost every example of (good) cinema. I'd describe people today as working based on laws. I don't mean that back then we used to do illegal stuff and that was cool, just that now people are all following the same book on how to speak, express themselves and behave, like they're programmed in the same way. Goes far beyond than just agreeing on what's right and wrong.
This is bleeding in our fiction too, we're writing the exact same character with the exact same set of morals and reactions based on 3 types max regardless of context or the world they're in. This can really be felt with Marvel if you're looking for an obvious example.

Because they want kids more entitled, more rude, more unbearable, and become terrible adults.. there's no moral lessons in media anymore, awful characters are shown as heroes now, the most arrogant, rude, delusional, terrible to other characters, somehow able to beat anyone at everything, without years of practice..they are setting kids up to fail, to be weak and easily manipulated, they are creating better slaves, and the downfall of modern society..it was never accidental, its all by design..planned decades ago.

Media literacy has gone down! Genuinely, they aren't teaching kids in school how to read into stories anymore, soTwitter has them thinking that presenting an idea in a story = endorsing it. And now big studios, afraid of backlash, are catering to that, which only makes the problem worse. The stories don't challenge anyone, so audiences never learn to be challenged.

When are people gonna realize that politics has wormed its way into everything. Colleges are completely liberal and are breeding people who eat sleep and breath liberal politics. The people then get hired into the workforce and become writers but are incapable of writing a story without a political bias. Any TV show or movie written by a person obsessed with social politics will be trash. America has become so political over the last 10 years with Blue and red. conservatives versus liberals trump versus Biden that of course the people write material with politics slipped in. Charlie likes to say bad writers bad writers but fails to see that it is not that they can not write, it is that they are mentally obsessed with social politics. Colleges are creating liberal young adults who are very ideological and when ideological people write stories, it is impossible to not have the biases become apart of the writing. We use to have writers who sole goal was to entertain and write good stories, but now it is not about a good story it is about "positive social change" again because the writers are ideological. Why do you think some of the best media these days is now starting to come from places outside the US because other countries especially Japan does not have liberal ideologs writing shows ,movies and games. They have people doing that. People who care about a good products not a social message. The people who are writing more and more of the material you see coming out of Hollywood over the last 5 years are not writers they are social activists. Look at twitter before musk. - Misinterpreted and removed Sokka's sexism and character development
    - Removed Katara's nuturing characteristic of her personality
    - Misinterpreted and removed Aang's childlike qualities that also double as character flaws, removing his character development in the process
    - Removed all the side adventures they went on in the cartoon, instead opting to rush the crew to the Northern Water Tribe
    - Said that they're "not making it a show just for kids" when the original was aimed at all ages and tackled a lot of sensitive subjects
    - Aiming the show for GoT fans instead of AtLA fans just for the ratings???
If they already messed up 3/5 of Team Avatar, I'm not excited about whatever they might do to Toph or Zuko. As an audience, when we hear this, we understand the show runners are attempting to be respectful and faithful to the original work so we appreciate the show and are more forgiving towards any changes, as we see it as a mutual agreement between the show runners and the original creators rather than a "f**k you, your story sucks" or "this material has outdated social elements, so we will write a better one instead".

It’s honestly Hollywood’s fault that animation is perceived this way, given how often it’s belittled and disrespected at the Academy, which is ostensibly a key sounding board for the public at large.
It’s the boomer effect of the entertainment industry where everyone knows animation isn’t solely a children’s medium but older generations simply refuse to acknowledge that despite overwhelming evidence.
It also ironically infantilizes adult audiences by acting like they can’t appreciate a story that doesn’t involve gratuitous sex, language or violence.

This is the perfect summation of it. It is a compounding effect as Boomers in Hollywood belittle animation and treat it like a child's artform. All that does is relegate American animation to the bottom of the totem pole. But they chose that almost actively!
It'd be like if a baker walked into a room and was like "Idk guys I was gonna bring cake but no one likes it." And then everyone's like "We actually like it. Not only do we want cake, we want many varieties of it" Then the baker shrugs and is like "I don't know I don't like cake. No one I know likes cake. Maybe people just hate cake" Like we all know the reality. It's just purposely being dodged because they made up their minds like 40 years ago.

Another thing I hate is this idea that live action is the ultimate art form, the ultimate transcendence of art. Video games need to be live action to be valid. Animated things must be live action to be valid. Repeat that into infinity. And people eat it up due to this age-old notion they had as kids that it would be so cool if the thing they liked looked realistic. That mentality only persists because no one came along with a grand statement to say "Hey no, your thing perfectly fits the medium its in. Animation is okay"
What's worse is how much it justifies soulless retreads. We could spend time and money on new stories for stuff like Avatar and TLOU that utilize those mediums to their fullest without retreads, but they don't want that.

It's how they meet several iconic characters. The entire reason they find out about the Day of Black Sun is by the gaang choosing _vacations,_ and the knowledge Sokka gains from that ends up being the central focus of much of the show. Sokka was the only "adult" male in his tribe after the rest of the men left to war. The Water Tribe are based on a much simpler civilization, like native americans or even inuit/eskimo people. And because of that Sokka adopts a very early (and somewhat ancient) worldview that men fight and women dont. But it wasn't until he met Suki, someone from an entirely different culture, that he was able to learn, apologize and change. Suki was also shown to be mature enough to forgive him, and even teach him a new way to see the world. Great message that people can be brought up with one world view and expand it based on those they interact with. Also, Sokka is shown to lose his "toxic masculinity" as the series went on and he evolves as a warrior. Ever notice how Sokka always used the club (very brutish weapon), but as time went on, he started to rely on things like his boomerang, strategy and eventually a sword? Remember it was he who wanted to go to the Library, he who found out about the eclipse, he helped with the submarines, and also planned and strategized much of the invasion. Also the only person who can read a map. Point being that something like "knowledge and intelligence" (something historically looked down upon by alpha males), became his ability to compete with the rest of the characters. He didn't stay a brute that hit things with a club, he grew and evolved into a character that was worthy of being a part of such a GOATED show. He literally went from a STR "Unga Bunga" build to "Chad" DEX user during the show run, and its fucking awesome. Also, there are so many amazing women characters in this show, that they do not need to be protected from Sokka's early character flaws. 90% of males who have watched this show, favorite character is the fucking 12 year old blind girl.
