This guy is great. I don't know anything about chips, mods,or sodering but I feel like I learn a little watching you, thanks hope to get my neo geo soon.
Yeah I think they did a great job with this, even if the CPU is slow “by today’s standards” it works well and whoever they had make the PCB’s did an amazing job, solder looks good and the board itself is thicker then I imagined
ETA PRIME I am looking forward for your mod on this thing, the amount of space behind the screen seems enough to put battery pack. Great informative video as always, keep it up.
Sir, Doing a great job for people like us. It is an old video but not that old, not in the home town for a while. But gives us lot of thing to understand. Really appreciated your work and it takes lot of encouragement to tear down that kind of stuff.
I been watching your channel for so long.... Even thought my comments always end up in the bottom somewhere. Wanted to say..... You're THE BEST BRO.. LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS. :)
great info along w the review. convinced me to pre-order one today. NEO GEO was also my fave system back in the day. are you planning on doing a video guide on adding the batteries?
ATC2605 companion IC (switching regulators, ADC/DACs, low density mixed-function IC that contains the complete jungle of analogue parts needed for main chip to work) has a built-in Li-Ion battery charger and all that's needed to run straight from battery. Charge current is set by bootloader, so it might be disabled, or it might work, you might be able to have less wiring and remove power bank PCB.
This looks well thought out and built. It's nice they left it so open behind the screen for easy modding in a battery pack. Seems like it'll need some kind of battery indicator light if you intend to shut it off before it dies. Maybe cannibalizing an off the shelf pack with this feature would be a better fit... though it would mean more cutting. Overall I'm really impressed with the NG Mini. Even without modding it, it's easily the best of these mini arcade systems. It boots super fast and has save states which alone makes it better than most of the other mini arcade toys. The battery was the only thing missing... but seems like a fairly easy mod.
So, along with many others, I thought this was going to be $250. Come to find out that they are selling in Japan for only $150 and might only be $100 internationally when pre orders go up. Thanks to ItsLucasYap for having me dig even deeper to find this out.
No problem, back when this was first announced I thought for sure it would be $150. $100 is an amazing price considering you can hook up a controller to it and play it off your TV as well.
Damian Gash For now I believe it's just the controller they sell specifically for it but I'm sure some will pop up as time goes on. I'll be looking for that wireless hookup from 8bitdo, if they make a thing for it.
What do you want to bet that the official controllers just have some minor change to make it incompatible with standard controllers? Also, I find it ironic that when the NeoGeo first came out, each of the games cost hundreds of dollars and now you can get 40 of them in a tabletop toy described as "not very powerful".
I guess it will be soon possible to upload the almost entire collection of Neogeo games ! And probably play some other retro consoles on it. The mini Snes emulates neogeo games almost perfectly ! Thanks a lot for your efforts and great video
Excellent video. I like the idea of going portable. If the batteries did not fit an external battery pack would have worked. Placing the pack inside though makes it clean. I enjoy all your videos man. Keep them coming.
You meant to say that its not a micro switched joystick like the Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo CD controller. A gate would do nothing to change the fact that its an analog joystick.
He means a restrictor gate which physically limits the direction that a joystick can be moved, such as 4-way or 8-way directions only. Of course it'll still be an analog joystick underneath.
Lovely video, thank you ETA Prime. I might get one of these, and put a pi3 in it or something. I have a 640x480 3.5" LCD leftover. Maybe my old Odroid C2. I love that the control board is separate, makes modding other SOCs into it way easier. Also, it almost looks like you can cram 6 or even 7x 18650s in it.
Hi @ETAprime Was wondering if u could upload the video for the steps to do the mini arcade u did afew months back trying to make one with some parts i have laying around thanks N awesome video !
NIce vid! ThanksBTW, have you ever disassembled the ball knob from the stick? I'd like to exchange it with a bigger ball knob. I have an International version tho..
I tried finding a Japanese Neo Geo Mini, no dice. I mean, if I wanted to pay the price of a real Neo Geo I could do that, but I really don’t wanna do that. I’ll hold off until the international version.
Great as always. How’s the follow up coming, I bet your having to much fun playing it in the shade outside. Put it down and please make a vid showing us the finished mobile neogeo mini.
I enjoyed the video but can you show more about Lakka on the switch and why you prefer it over Yuzu? And more rom game play on the switch? Keep up the great work
I just bought this and noticed my joystick is a little wonky. Moving the direction towards diagonal up/left works only half the time. Really annoying and I'm not sure how to fix this. This was on clearance so there's not a good chance of exchanging it for a new one.
i'm hoping to get one of these and stick inside my spare neo geo x dock for the ultimate experience :D SNK were upset with Tommo with their shady shenanigans of the let down that was the neo geo x this looks promising indeed.
I find it interesting how this seems popular, whereas the Neo Geo X was a pariah for the longest time. Friendlier presentation? Better game selection? $100 cheaper? The right time? Probably all of the above!
I have a question about the screen on this console. What type of lcd screen is that exactly? I noticed the pixels are really crisp and tiny I would like to be able to purchase a similar screen in a larger size any where from 8 to 12 inch for plug and play but don't know what to look for can you help me?
Thanx for the amazing video. How will you be able to charge the batteries & how will you complete the circuit to get it fully running and charging? I would love to see the mod 😜
@@Chillywilly8818 I'm in Perth, but didnt really think the Neo Geo was worth it for me. I'm enjoying the Apicade its an Australian product that works with the Raspberry pi.
Hi friend! I have bought a neogeo mini yesterday and tested a nintendo switch hori hayabusa arcade stick just to see if it works and at the moment I connected the cable in port 1 someting happend because the neogeo's analog is not working properly animore and the game menu is scrolling endlessly. What shuld I do to fix it? I allready tried to power off and on the console but the analog eather is not responding at all or it works just right/left or up/down. The rest of the buttons work just fine. Only the analog stick seems to be damaged somehaw. I do not understsnd what I did wrong? I used an adapting cable usb-a 3.0 mother to usb-c father in order for me to connect the hyabusa arcade to the neogeo port. The dumbest thing I could have done. Me and my stupid ideas.
I think its worth the price if you want something that you don't have to tinker with to get working. That is if its going to be 100 dollars for the USA version. You could always emulate these via a laptop and a HDMI to your television. That of course would take a little more work. Your getting 40 games that you can play without a television. Some might be annoyed with the joystick. I can understand why this doesn't have a battery pack as it would add to the cost of the unit. I am very tempted to buy one when this comes to the USA
Bora Chreng Like a power bank? If so, YES! This is even shown and advertised it can do this with the Neo Geo Mini trailer. It's on RUclips. If you can't find it, go to SNK's official Neo Geo Mini website, and it's there.
Since the japanese version has a better design compare to the international but less good games (for me)...would it be possible to swap the board from one console to another?
Hmm... Wonder if anyone's going to install the console into at least a bartop arcade body with a 720p display. Unless the external controllers are built that much differently, one could tie in thier favorite arcade stick and buttons to the board and have some fun. :)
TrueSinister very disappointed in the mini. I will get for collectors purposes. But overall the neogeo X runs circles round this. Perfect CRT output and arcade sticks with a bit of tearing, now add a pi 3 to the dock and you have a dream come true. Filters, scsnlines and the lot.
NiGHTS1980 Last I saw on their official site, absolutely yes! More stock may not come until the international version is released. It shows either more stock, or more open pre-orders on more Japanese units. Let's just hope that International version pre-orders do well, and interest is high enough, for them to produce more. I have a Japanese unit myself! It's very fun, and I've put some hours into it already. Just sucks that the video quality coming through HDMI is muddy, even with the "enhancements" off. Looks good though on the 3.5 inch screen.
This guy is great. I don't know anything about chips, mods,or sodering but I feel like I learn a little watching you, thanks hope to get my neo geo soon.
Wow, the internal looks good. Well designed

I'm actually surprised myself, especially with all the cheap emulation consoles being thrown around lately.
That is 🐃💩 stick and buttons. It was supposed to be microswitches so it could feel like an arcade fightstick.
🗑 ass console.

Thank you!
was waiting for this one amazing as always ;)
My first thought upon receiving this was that it needed a battery. Tnx for the teardown.
Excellent teardown and descriptions ETA Prime.. can't wait to see it run with the battery

Another great vid, lookin forward to the modding vids

Pimoroni just dropped their redesigned Picade cabinet. You should get a hold of one of those and make a sweet review! Great work as always.
The heck with a lit up marquee... throw an LCD screen up there and have it change to whichever game you're currently playing!!
Though, Neogeo games didn't really have traditional marquees so would be a custom one for each game...

Great vid ETA ! I'm almost interested it this.I just want the entire Neo library to fit and then i'm totally sold :p
Thanks for this video, Still shame about the stick because would be AWESOME to play with a mini arcade stick :) What do you think ?
A tear down of the PC Engine would be cool.
ETA do you know the screen part number? My Neo Geo Mini screen is dead. I will look for a replacement screen. ;(

Thx... Great video.
Gracias ... Video genial.
Great vid. Thank you!
By the looks of it, you should be able to use the type C port for charging. There's no charge circuit in there now, but adding one is totally doable.
Anyway to get bluetooth to get to work for it you think?

I was thinking of maybe just using a 10,000 Mah flat pack, I will have time tonight to mess around with it and I’ll probably be done by Sunday
Yay! I hope it all fits. With that little board, it'd probably get some pretty good battery life with those batteries.
