  • This video is for 1. people who make custom clothes for private clients and 2. people who take on freelance fashion design and illustration projects, whether you do this on the side outside your day job or do this full time. I formatted this video as tips because these projects are too varied to squeeze into one process template. These tips are gleaned from years of experience taking on freelance projects. This video also includes how to figure out what to charge people!

    Very imformative. I think I am a very good pattern maker and a sewer. I lecture pattern making. But I am really shy at promoting my self. I feel really weird talking about my products. I dont even post anything related to talking about my self. I havent even update my status. I want to do freelance work. I really love to make custom dresses. But it is so hard because I am not a social media person. So I dont know where to begin. Your vedio gave me really good tips. I gonna use them to build the business that I always wanted to do.

    I am currently studying Computer Arts but after one year of being in uni i realised that my passion is fashion and always has been. I am good at drawing and drawing only, it is what im good at and i have tried all kinds of styles and mediums both traditional and digital. I just keep going back to drawing pretty girls in pretty outfits! :D I remember as a 6y/o or somewhere around that age, i used to tear up lace curtains and wrap them around my body to create different outfits and walk in front of my parents to give them a mini fashion show :D This year i got into reading fashion books and something in me just sparked. I feel like i have a direction in life again. I love drawing and digital illustration and I thought that video game design and character concept art would be what i would be most happy doing, but after just one year i realised that this is not the case..
    So sorry for the long comment, my point is that you inspire me to parallel study fashion on the side of my degree and learn sewing and textiles and everything that comes with it. Thank you for your wonderful channel and that you are willing to be so consistent in posting and thinking of interesting things to talk about. You are wonderful!! 💜💜

    Hey Zoe! Thank you very much for you immense work. I'm really grateful for all the tips. I have one more question in continuation. Do you have an advice where to search an info about contracts for freelance designers. Or it always comes from the company you collaborate with? Is it possible to do by myself or it always takes a lawyer?
    Thank you.
    P.S. Maybe you also have some info about contracts with wholesale buyers. That would be so useful to have your video about all the legal issues of fashion design process (based on your experience).
    Thanks again.

    If not, something to add to the list perhaps? I am very interested in hearing them, or any you are able to disguise or work arounds with private customers. 🍍

    Thank you for this great info. I am hoping you can help me figure out how to handle this issue of working with multiple designers. If I am working with multiple designers and each of them wants exclusive rights to the patterns I design for them, how can I maintain exclusivity if I get asked to draft a similar design for another designer.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  3 года назад +1

      Legally, you change the design 10%. Ethically, I think you should aim for closer to 20-25% different. You don't want your clients to get upset that you're selling designs too similar to the one they have exclusive rights to. However, you should charge extra for exclusivity.

    So what if your work is 3D? I am still learning how to do 3D fashion art, but have a friend who is a wedding dress designer and wanted to know what I would charge to create her dresses in 3D for each bride to be able to see via AR. If she gives me the pattern I can create it in under an hour. Without, if there are just photos or her drawings, takes considerably longer. Few hours to a day or two. Don’t know how to charge for that. Also can create thread and fabric textures, different colors, can make a mannequin to put it on...could also animate it...suggestions?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 лет назад +2

      Nothing is different. You charge different rates for "Pattern Provided" and "From Scratch" and all the things you can do are different services you can provide with different rates.
