    : : : ABOUT THE VIDEO : : :
    The video above is footage from the last bass that I (Brian Ristola of Ristola Instruments) built in my New Hampshire workshop before selling the property (house and workshop).
    This bass was built for me…and is a prototype model….very much a one-off and not a production build. While it is Fender® inspired….the body, neck, and other aspects are of my own design.
    At the time of this instrument’s construction, I was in the process of selling-off most of my machinery, and occasionally was having to accomplish certain tasks in a way that was a bit unconventional. At the very end, during assembly, I was working in a family member’s basement, which is not a workshop, but it worked fine to complete the tasks that remained.
    The video is not meant to be instructional, and not even a great representation of how I like to build my production basses, but merely capturing my last build in the New Hampshire shop as my wife and I were selling our home…..and everything in it :). There are a couple small bits that I did not capture (pickup hole routing and neck shape dimensioning). Regardless, I hope you enjoy the video.

    I’ve watched a lot of bass builds, and the extra time you take to make the bass super comfortable and playable is why this is one of my favorites. The time others take to put a ‘special Pac-Man inlay’ or make some wild shape that takes 3 extra hours; you instead take that time to extra sand/conform the neck and body for playability. And also the extra care of shielding the cavity and the back of the pick guard. All the extra work put in to make a stellar ‘player bass’ as opposed to some others trying to make a spaceship out of their bass, but then it probably ends up feeling horrible in the hands and against the body. Love this video man!!!

      Thanks for your kind words Ralphy - After many years of building basses commercially, I was building this bass for me. It was the last one in my New Hampshire workshop (finished in my Mom's basement after selling the house/shop). Most of my building career was spent building more complex instruments, but ultimately, I simply wanted this style of bass, without regard for getting views or helping the algorithm here on YT. While I believe there is a place for art and pushing ourselves with interesting design and material choices, at this point, I believe I know what sounds good, and feels good.
      Something that a lot of players may not know, is that much of building a bass is not too difficult for an experienced woodworker. However, the fingerboard leveling and fretwork are not easy to do at a high level. There are plenty of cool looking basses that I've seen at NAMM or in high end instrument shops that play poorly.
      Playability, something that will cannot be experienced through a video, is an area of building that I have spent significant time honing skills.
      Thanks for watching!

    I like that you glued in the frets. Don't see that quite often enough

      Hi Wes - Thanks for checking out the video. I think it is worth doing. I definitely like hammering in frets, but the glue is just an extra step that is easy enough to do. If using super glue (as some do), be sure to tape off really tightly along the fret slot edges and have some solvent handy.

    Thanks for a great video: the editing must have been murder! Seriously, that's a beautiful, subtle twist on classic design. Incredible amount of detail to do a one- off like that, without CNC! Very clean. Time lapse of such pro work really shows how much goes into this. I only want to hear you play a bit more now!

    Very chaotic approach. The neck mounted and demounted several times (headstock even not started), stings mounted to unfinished neck several times, no template used...uff

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  11 месяцев назад +2

      Not sure what to say other than the result is a high quality instrument. As mentioned in the description, this particular bass was a prototype, so working without the net of some of my regular templates made sense given the time restraints and my ability to execute certain processes without a template. As mentioned, I was in the process of selling off machinery and my shop during the construction of the bass and the build was unconventional for me as a builder….and life was unfortunately very chaotic at that moment, but getting this final instrument built before moving was important to me. Regardless…thanks for checking out the video.

    Could you tell the dimentions of the neck pocket on this bass

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  2 года назад

      Hi Alan, the overall neck dimensions are: 1.5” at the nut and 2.5” at the last fret. If you draw that out, you’ll get exact neck pocket.

  • @mikeknowlden9617
    @mikeknowlden9617 Год назад +1

    When you rout out the body for the neck pocket do you rout in an angle to aid in lowering the string height? Approximately 1or 2 degrees im guessing

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  Год назад

      Thanks for checking out the video Mike. I do not route the pocket, but put a slight angle on the heel of the neck. You’ll see me sanding for this at minute 6:55. I am actually sanding down to a lines marked on each side of the neck heel.

    • @mikeknowlden9617
      @mikeknowlden9617 Год назад

      @Fat Bass Tone ah yes the other side of the issue. My profile picture is the bass I made for myself and it's my first from scratch. I've been told that the action is way to hi and there is no more adj at the saddle, so the neck set is my issue. Thanks very much!

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  Год назад +1

      @@mikeknowlden9617 In that case, changing the angle of the neck pocket may be the best solution. Another option (arguably less elegant for some) would be to route a depression in the bass body, lowering the bridge entirely.

      Hi Japhta - like most places in the world, even the US and Europe, builders are relying on having things shipped to them. Indeed the cost is higher in Cameroon unfortunately. Thanks for checking out the video.

    My goal is to build the lightest , slimmest bass body and neck to match from the lightest wood , so there isn't any neck dive.

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  Год назад +1

      Indeed, It is possible to build a very light instrument. Keep in mind that a piece of the neck dive puzzle - that is often overlooked - is where your upper horn ends. A good rule of thumb is to end it around the twelfth fret. That helps the bass balance well on a strap. One can also take the approach of honing in on the sound and use the woods you want to achieve that tone, and then having chambers in the body (holes) that are unseen.
      To your point about having a slim neck and body…I find doing a slimmer body to be comfortable as well as saving weight. With the neck, there are functional considerations, truss rod type and the depth it requires. The feel, neck resonance / stiffness balance.

  • @Loran1972
    @Loran1972 Год назад

    Donc, si j'ai bien compris, il fait tout dévisser pour accéder au truss rod si un réglage manche se fait ressentir !!! pourquoi ne pas avoir découper l'accès pour le passage de la clé Allen ?!

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  Год назад

      Très bon œil... vous êtes le premier à le remarquer ! Normalement, je coupe le trou pour l'accès au truss rod dans le pickguard lorsque je roule pour l'accès au truss rod dans le corps. Cette construction de basse a été faite alors que je vendais ma maison et que je voulais rapidement compléter un instrument de plus (pour moi-même)... mais je n'ai pas reçu le matériel de protection au bon moment, donc je n'ai pas pu suivre mon protocole normal. J'avais besoin de couper le trou du pickguard après. Il n'est pas inclus dans la vidéo, car il n'est pas dans le bon ordre de procédure :)

    31 minutes of building and just a few seconds playing a simple E minor scale? Why?

    • @FatBassTone
      @FatBassTone  3 месяца назад

      Hi Benji - Thanks for checking out the video. A couple reasons why there is so little playing at the end. I finished the bass in my mom's basement just after my wife and I sold our house and shop - I wasn't where we typically film our videos, so didn't have any of our normal equipment. That bass stays at my mom's place, so I have a good bass to play without lugging one on a plane when we visit her. I love that bass, and would like to have it with me all the time, but I also appreciate having a quality bass that lives at her place as well. Also, the video just got too long!
