As an avid bassist of 40 years, I really enjoyed your build . Fantastic work gorgeous the amount of time. Very impressive and I will definitely be looking for more similar episodes. Awesome!!
I've smoked my basses, too and it always looks better than not burning it. It adds so much character. That bass turned out GREAT and the pickguard looks great, and sounds great, too.
Certainly not the worst sounding bass I've ever heard. I'm actually surprised at how balanced it sounded. Probably best that you used the neck you did...otherwise you would likely still be trying to level the frets! Cool video. Thanks!
Interesting project, but if you add in the cost of labor, the total cost of the bass is well over the $139.00 you paid for the parts. Plus you need to have access to the tools and the necessary skills to build the bass. I know how to do a basic setup and intonation. But anything beyond that, I would need to take the bass to a local shop. Out of curiosity, I checked Sweetwater. They have a Squier Affinity PJ bass on sale for $219.00 (7/28/2024). I would much rather spend a little extra money for what would likely be a better all-around instrument.
Justin and his father are amazing at what they do, I think burning it was the best idea! It looks great! And $10 pickups?? Pretty cool for a neat project
That burnt look is kickass in my opinion! I tried that on an old acoustic guitar I sanded down and it was a mistake because it got too hot and burned away some of the binding! OOPSIE!!
The body is made of Candlenut (Aleurites Moluccanus). I know that because it looks exactly the same as the first body I bought from chinese seller. It was extremely soft and very hard to work (because it was too easy to damage). With time, patience and work I managed to make a good guitar out of it. The nice thing about these is that once finished, it looks great and naturally age very fast. Funny thing is that the chinese neck I bought at the same time was a extremely hard maple. Stronger than a gibson haha. My LP fell a lot of time on the head without a single damage.
Seriously, that actually looks pretty decent lads, burning the thing is so metal 🤘😂😂 Love it fellas, good job, I enjoyed this video even though I'm a total metalhead and not into the funky stuff, at least it's a bass 😉
When he said we're going to burn it I didn't think it was going to be well done! 😋 I was thinking a lighter burn to enhance the grain but that wood is obviously too soft for that method...looks cool though
I bought a "kit" from some guy from Craigs list! It is a FENDER Body, Neck, Hardware, everything Fender! Got it all together!! Took me WAY More than a Day!!! By The Way, I just bought the Squire Paranormal Rascall Bass! Love it so far!
Good video man. I think that body wood is poplar. When it 20 years old it will be so hard that it would burn up a drill bit. I have to build by hand also it can get to hair pulling stress sometimes.
How did it compare to your perception of the GLarry ? The GLarry is a sub $ 100 bass guitar ? Some sources, it may price out for what the build cost, with a gig bag, amp, cable & other items.
Did that sweet pickguard material come from Remu too? I was gonna say it looks like poplar but you said its so soft its gotta be basswood, I havent seen raw basswood before.
I tried to watch this. The TEMU portion was not the issue! The builder whining about not being able to just use the computer and CNC right off then all the way through to me quitting watching, the unintelligent comments that show his lack of knowledge of "Hardwood" and "Softwood" as Balsa is a Hardwood not to mention that a simple sand and smell test will tell you if it is pine. The overwhelming and pushed feeling of why am I making this video got too great at the half way mark. I don't know the channel but this is the presented video to get to know two apparent inept builders (if the one guy is a builder) on a hate filled "just why even bother" build made me never want to even try another vid or try to get to know these guys. I wish the channel good luck and hope this was a really bad example of their work suggested by RUclips.
😂😂 I never said I was a master builder or anything. I just started messing around building some guitars a couple years ago for fun. So I definitely don’t have all the knowledge in the world about wood like you do good sir lol. All I know is this wood was much softer than what I usually mess with. But also, get this…it doesn’t matter. It’s a cheap inexpensive bass made with TEMU parts lol. The channel is just not for you, I’m glad you got that figured out early on so you won’t waste anymore of your time. 👍🏼
@@neoguitarconcepts20 The entire issue was the attitude. Fine that a guitar builder does not know wood. You keep to the traditional woods you can't go wrong. However no matter what you are using or where the parts come from the "Attitude" displayed was the issue. I noticed that you did not address it in your response. Wood types is easy to learn. Hell their are only two Hard, Broad Leaf and Soft, Needle leaf. Species is much harder and I did not bring that up at all. but again it was the attitude that the ignorant statement was said in being the main issue. Nice job trying to shift the issue to something that was stupid but not the main problem your attitude which you had no response to.
@@MrAaroncissell I didn’t try to shift the issue. You literally insulted my knowledge for me not knowing my woods lol so I was addressing that. And then in this response you said it’s “fine if a guitar builder doesn’t know woods.” So which is it? Insult me for my lack of knowledge or is it ok that I have a lack of knowledge? I’m going to need you to be more consistent with your jabs and critiques. I will admit looking back at the video that my attitude in the video is more along the lines of “I don’t think we can do this.” It was a lot to get done in one day and as I previously said, I’m not a professional. I just do this for fun so I was not optimistic that we could get the build done in one day. I’ll keep the attitude thing in mind for future videos. 👍🏼
Can i ask you something i been playing bass for few moments and i was thinking on getting a high price bass should i get a 5 string bass or stay on 4 strings?
I believe that as beauty is in the eye of the beholder... sound is in the fingers (and soul) of the player! with that said... I'll be considering Temu!... still haven't bought anything from them, as I thought they might be shady, but... this seems like quite legit. Also, if instead going for little more quality parts (for a total of under 300, which is double as what they spent on Temu), it should be possible to build something even better! :D
He didn't have to do the cutout for the J pickup on the CNC right? Or has he never used a handheld router with a follower bit? Mark out centerline, put on template, route away, literally 5min job. I have a whole stack of templates for neck pockets, pickups etc. You make one if you need one, and hang on to it.
Obviously I know I could do that…but I don’t own a handheld router. AND adding a pickup was a last minute idea we had so we didn’t have a template to put down on the centerline my guy. So without a template I just measured the pickup, designed it in the software with a bit of an offset, got the bass put on the CNC and made sure it was straight and boom…pickup hole was cut out. Sure it took longer than 5 minutes but we didn’t have the alternative. I used the CNC for the pickguard too cause we didn’t know if a random pickguard from TEMU would fit and line up with the neck pocket, etc. So we thought it would be easier to just design and cut our own pickguard out.
@@neoguitarconcepts20 I'd say get a handheld router, doing repairs and mods for people is a great (and quick!) way to bolster your revenue if you are looking to grow your business. IMHO, there probably are a lot more people looking to change the sound of their guitar by changing pickups, than there are people ready to buy a fully custom instrument.
@@jarnoverhoeven3118 you are probably right about that. I’m sure there’s more people wanting customization and work done on their instruments rather than buy new instruments. All I’ve ever done is build instruments from scratch. I’ve never done this kind of stuff to existing instruments. The few videos I’ve done with Travis are the only times I’ve ever messed with bodies and necks already made. But I’ll look into getting a handheld router. No doubt it would be useful in the shop.
@basstor1 Definitely looks like Paulownia (Empress) which I'm very familiar with. Extremely light and soft and not a great choice for basses with their added amount of string tension.

Everyone should get parts from Temu, so cheap! Bass parts : $136 only, equipment you need to make it: $90654 dollars...😂
THAT SO RIGHT! CAN'T MAKE IT WITH OUT MACHINERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tbh you absolutely can make it without the machines if you're super handy and don't need to do it fast
not equipment, everything can be manual, but to find someone who will actually spend time to make it work thats the expensive part.

Actually looks good and sounds pretty decent. Justin and his Dad both are killer guitar players.
Pretty sure Temu steals your information and sells it

Travis Dykes Signature Model 1. 🔥
I really like the burnt finish on this, but that pickguard can return to fires of hell from which it was cast.
Best part is the Lava pick guard.🔥🎸
