Welcome to my Channel,
My name is James and I live full time in my tiny van, however this is not just a van life channel. I enjoy travel, food and drink and making videos 🙂
When I turned 50 I decided I’d had enough of the rat race and working long hours just to pay rent and bills, life was passing me by and I needed a drastic change.
FAQ
Where is Helen?
Helen has a responsible full time job and two children so unfortunately she can’t join me on every trip. I really wish she could.
What equipment do you use?
My vlogging camera is a GoPro Hero 9 but I also use my pixel 6a phone and Lumix G80 camera for other footage
For editing, I used Premiere Pro on an old laptop but I’m saving to buy a more powerful computer.
Do you have children?
Yes I have a 6yr old daughter who lives with her mum but I see her quite a lot. I don’t usually put her on the vlogs and if I do, I block out her face for privacy reasons. I also have a grown up son.
How do you fund your lifestyle?
I don’t need as much to live these days since going full time van life but I receive a small percentage of income from the ads that RUclips put on the videos.
Why the sponsored videos?
I only accept sponsorship from companies I use and trust, this is my fulltime job and my income, it’s how I support my family. (I have Patreon if you prefer videos with no ads).
How do I contact you?
Please contact me here: james@bythecurb.co.uk
It was so nice to hear you ring your mum every day. I'm now 60 and rang mine every day until last July when she died. I take great comfort in the fact I told her I loved her every day... nice vlog as usual, James. 👍🏻🙂
I'm sorry to hear that mate. I always tell her I love her. Helen lost her mum recently and wishes she could still call her.
Feel your pain Terry, spoke to mine daily, lost her 16 months ago and lost without her.
@@bythecurb That's the trick James, never be afraid to say it, I had a health scare at 28 and realised I rarely told her. It came as a shock when I started telling her every time we saw each other or spoke but I know it meant so much to her.
@@TheCho-k4m Thank you, I feel your pain too...
My late Father used to say to me,
If you have a Mother, cherish her with care,
You never know her value,
Till, you see her vacant chair.
There's THREE types of viewer! Some of us enjoy both types of video!
Haha oh yes!! 😂
Love watching
As a fellow miserable Barnsley man.. I salute you James living the absolute dream 👍🏼
Thanks mate 😂
Hi there mate i like England its got lot of history in the towns and places old buildings art deko buildings

It was nice to see you pick up the litter (other people's mess)that's what my M8 (BUSHMAN & Blue) says on his blog "Leave no trace" thank you James
The weather is not your fault James it's England. Your content is always great 😊😊😊
Hi James, you really are a hero. My wife and I used to do six months or so stealth camping in our Pozl van. Fortunately after trying the UK - beautiful as it is - we decided that Spain and Portugal was much, much better. Not just the weather and cheap vino but also the aires some with electricity. All power to you amigo!
Thank you, I love Spain and if I didn't have family here, I'd be off!! 😀
@@bythecurb would luv to see you and Helen on a van trip to Spain. Thanks for picking up some lazy buggers trash, we do the same when out in the van. Hi de ho from New Zealand.
I don't care what anyone says, great Britain has some beautiful places, no matter what the weather!
Just really expensive
Had#
Very true. I think the nicest countryside in the world can be found in the British isles
Absolutely. We are so lucky 😊
We do indeedy, no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing 😅😂
Thank you for acknowledging and appreciating us watchers who enjoy a good ole fashion actually van life video. I enjoy watching the day to day routine and cooking, errands etc. not just talking, driving and a bunch of B-rolls!

It's gotta b southerners moaning. I think ya sense of humour is great.
Keep doin wat u n Helen r doin.x
Love Kenneth Williams 😂
That's what my dear old grandad used to say. When one door closes, another one opens, that's probably why he got kicked off the submarines. But I've got to say. Your van life videos are my favourite. I enjoyed it. 😊
😂😂 Thank you
'I've swapped seats again' Chuckling. Great stuff James.
I am an American, who is an Anglophile. I love the UK, with a real affinity for Cornwall. I love that you take us all around. Miss your banter w Helen but enjoyed your vlog on your own. Happy trails.
Thank you, so cosy in your van. Nice scenery on your walk 😊
Thank you so much :-)❤
@@bythecurb You’re welcome.
The van looks amazing since it’s refit ……. The tea for £3.99 a bargain Please don’t let the rain spoil your blogs We are British and right there with you. The sleeping arrangements are just what the rest of us are trying to manage van life or not but we don’t enjoy the scenery you have this is a top video keep up the great work loving the trips feels like we are right there with you. Man bag and all xx Don’t you just love the man who rings his Mum daily ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you Jill. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Wow very surprised at your age pal, had you down for early 40s. Loving your stuff.
I’d 100% be letting than rain wash me pots! 🤣🤣🤣
I wouldn’t leave rubbish though, nice one for leaving it better than you found it 👍🏽
Such scathing condemnation of hash browns...'There to fill your plate up!' Thats why we love you James!😂😂😂
Great vlog as usual mate.

No overnight parking
Take care pal
Absolutley loved seeing you in the back of your wagon cooking something up makes me envious lolx❤

The structure and style of your videos get better and better. We love 'em !
Thank you, glad you like them
You have got a lovely vannice and comfy😊😊
Wow, Are Hulleys Of Baslow still going? School bus days in the late eighties springs to mind. Those things always got through my old village in blizzards. Great vid!
Hi James it was lovely to see Hathersage on your vlog. Thank you. ❤
That looked scary in the fog☹, the stir fry looked lovely, your van looks superb now, a lot more room.
Take care James.
Beans in a separate pot does my head in. There's no need at all.
Fully agree, get 'em tipped out!
Me too.
Seems we are all in agreement 😂
@@bythecurb yes
James i bern there to when the kids were little there's also Will Scarlets grave at Blidworth Notts { my Border Collie Jet saw him)! There's also Robin Hoods grave at Kirkless....
Absolute love these vlogs gotta love a man bag😂
I also ring my mum every day and it's just something I have always done but you never know just how long you have left now that she is getting on, so I try to make the most of it. I like both the van life and the day trips but I hate to see people dropping litter and making lovely places become unsightly. James, thanks for the insight into Harthersage, much appreciated.
Hathersage wasn't rammed when I was young. That place called Sangams used to be The Bradgate Buttery, and if you look up, you'll see a double B back to back . I worked there for a short while and watched an absolute craftsman create a coat of arms in plaster, on the back wall. John Little came from Hathersage, he was Robin Hood's right-hand man or Lieutenant (pronounced leftenant) . These men were opposed to king John who was a proper tyrant. They would roam the land and avoid being captured, and the area that they covered was vast . Loxley was relatively close to Sheffield, and today is within its expanding boundaries. The sheriff of Nottingham was a particular enemy of the band of outlaws. There's far more to the story than meets the eye, and many want to dismiss it as "legend " but don't forget that the wicked king John was eventually forced to sign The Magna Carter. History is repeating itself with tyrants today claiming that it's been repealed, but a Law carrying a king's signature cannot be repealed, ever.
Robin Hood and his Merry Men is a STORY ‼️ And like all good stories, has an element of truth to them. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is another STORY.
However, I 'Grant' you, John, Dick Turpin actually existed ... along with his Horse. Pinocchio is a STORY too 😅😅😅😅
@joline2730 Oh for pity's sake! Why don't you stupid , uneducated fuktards give up flaunting your boundless lack of knowledge before the world? Do you not realise just how stupid and effing ignorant you are? There's more brain in a squashed dog turd. Do one Karen
Just 2 things missing for the perfect vlog, fish n chips and the lovely Helen. You sure packed a lot into that 30mins. Great to see the trip from Hillsborough through the Rivelin valley too, brought back memories. Your channel and St Christopher of Atlantis are competing for number 1 spot on my most loved channels list. Thanks for taking us with you 🤩
You are welcome. I love Andy and Claire, top channel
I had a few bottles of that coffee stout from Aldi a few nights ago. It was really nice.
hi like to meet you and helen when ever you come to nottingham keep up the good work james love your vidios john nottingham
Well it turned out to be a lovely day, we had a great time looking at all the old houses and a church and i'm originally from the home of Robin Hood (Nottingham)so it was good to see the grave of little John (real or not ! )...It is so good that you phone your mum everyday, stops her worrying about you.. See you next time !!!!!
Newbie here!! Just found your channel. Great vid!
Gotta say what a video ! i was glued to it ! well done James absolutely superb, i think what comes through is the reality of your van life, the in car footage was great, nice one mate a great video !
Thank you Lee :-)
Keep Vlogging love them.
True Detective series are worthy of a good coat of looking at.. xx.
Felt your pain when the first Cafe was closed ...gutted for ya 😐
Wonderful start you really are getting good at this. How beautiful is the countryside even at this time of year. Thanks again James
You missed a crack age at the Lido 😊
That walk up from the brdige is super slippy but not as steep as it looks and not so far. I had my friend with me, but you may have got muddy going up! Lovely to see Grindleford and the walk up. It was my first hike so memorable of how tough walking and slipping was. 😊
Great up load what a treat thank you James 😊 love the van 👍
Thank you :-)
Fair play to you for picking that rubbish up mate 😊👍👍👍👍
don't leave a pineapple outside of van James when in strange areas keep going content always good
I love old graves with a story behind it... nice video, i like you🤭
In that same church yard there is a grave of a famous cricketer of old can’t remember his name . You doing great mate take care
Thank you mate
James, i do like those few paragraphs just prior to the comments, a good update spot i think. I feel a top tip coming on as you finished
your evening meal and it concerns cleaning dishes. Make up a spray (dont buy one just remember that the spray nozzle nearly always fits a
pop bottle type screw, choose a small bottle and attach nozzle. Fill container with a half and half mix of white vinegar and water. It works a
treat and the vinegar smell just disappears after a short while, nice clean dishes. Try it and report back :) Best wishes Mike in County
Durham
Thank you for the tip Mike, I'll try that
Respect for picking up the litter 10:02 A lot of people would just say it wasn't theirs, so they aren't picking it up. and the dog bag If they get caught, they should be made to eat it.
I liked the café bit, I'm sitting here, I sitting here now, I've moved again. 🤣🤣
Great video. I felt the Derbyshire Breakfast was lacking one key component - a slice of white pudding
Hi James, a worth while watch on yt is Susanne Sunley, shes at the posh end of her version of van life. You might find it interesting. Totally different way to skin a rabbit.😅
Thanks for the tip, I'll look her up
Sorry we late James it’s been manic recently so looking forward to catching up on ya vlogs ❤️😘💕love to you and helebobs
Well done picking that rubbish up james 👏👏👏
Welcome to the Man-Bag Society... we have been expecting you James 😄 Soon you will be wondering why you didn't get one earlier, makes life so much easier when the weather is changeable and you are constantly switching from jeans to shorts and not having to transfer everything each time. I started using one about 10 years back when I needed to carry a small medical device with me all the time. All the best mate, David
Haha thanks David, Helen read your message to me yesterday and we both had a good laugh!! 😂
1st time ive came across ur channel mate, i think its class 👍 u should come up to Sunny Scotland 😂🏴
Great video as always James ... Have to say your van looks amazing now ... Living the dream, but the freedom must be amazing .. Best wishes always ;)

Bakewell is nice i like Sainsburys…
Thank you for the upload James 👍
You're welcome :-)
I love to watch you cook , eat and watch tv in that van and I have no idea why 😂❤
Haha a few people have said that. I don't know why either but I'll try and do more 😂
@@bythecurb It's because we are a Nation of people-watchers - doesn't really matter what you are doing, most will watch (like paint drying only more interesting!!)
You madman, should have gone for a swim at the lido in Hathersage! They have a cracking little cafe for walkins as well.
Me and the wife now carry litter pickers in our van after coming across a beautiful spot that was covered in trash
Good on you 😊
For an accurate forecast, I find the met office site get it right, 9 times out of 10
Hi JAMES wonderful video matey .. I still live with my mum and look after her too U only get one mum ... Great breaky too mate great video cu on next one
I really hope I can get a van one day, that's so comfy. Got a diesel heater but your idea with electric blanket.. game changer.
As soon as I receive notification of your latest video I become both curious and impatient. Why? Your intros. Actually , your ' soundtrack', too. You never fail to surprise; you never fail to entertain our ears. You have become a maestro, young man!
Thank you so much I really appreciate that
Hi James my partner and i love watching your videos when we are cosy of an evening in our full time home on wheels. Love seeing both your cooking and the travels. Hope you are staying warm 😊
Thank you, Im nice and toastie :-)
Believe it or not, I really envy watching you havin a meal in your little van watching Carry On Constable in ye bed 😅
You're never boring, as you have a mixture of everything.
By the way, I'll have to try some of that Aldi chicken stir-fry. It seems like it looked better than it tasted ?
Well, James, Happy travelling and stay safe.
I'll be watching. 😂 👍
Ye mum's got a lovely voice, and I love to see that your phone her everyday 💌 Brill.
Thanks mate, I like Aldi food but that was not one of their best!
It seemed a bit moist for a stir-fry.
I'll give that a miss then
Dinner looks good can hear the rain on your van at least it should shift the Fog!
Another great video. Top quality have a great evening
It's nice to see you out and about and on holiday but it's also nice to see the reality that crappy weather and dark days bring to the van lifer. The more mundane side of life is also interesting so keep it up.
The Indian in the corner is Maazi, an offshoot of the Maazi in Matlock. I've never been to the Hathersage one, but the Matlock one is exceptional, been there a lot over the years, I can really recommend it.
An interesting game of musical chairs.
If there was a Venn diagram of subscribers, I’d be right in the middle cos I enjoy the vanlife stuff and I also enjoy the travel stuff. 😃
It’s so cosy in your van. I really enjoyed that vlog. As you said, a little bit of everything 😁👍
Thank you 😊
Every video is a gem sir 🎩
Thank you 😊
Nicely edited. You're becoming a pro! Beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing it. Don't pack it in at 51! I don't wish a fall on ya, but you'd do just fine.
Thank you, I'm OK just a bit weary going to these places in the middle of nowhere by myself.
great vid as usual james, can i give you a wee tip, if u have some spare cash get some youtube stickers made up and any pub/restaurant you go to ,ask if they could display it with your channel name on it, worth a try m8. it definetely catches peoples eye and would increase the subscribers
Good idea, I need to design some first 😂
James...
I'm so glad you moved from the foggy heights. I was creeped out !
Put your cooked dinner back into its original container when you've cooked it when it's raining (obviously) -no washing up dirty for t'morning 🌄
I was annoyed with you risking tetanus and bochulism by picking up everyone else's c..p. but I know exactly why you did it. Losers don't realise they spoil it for evri 1 else.
"Not the athlete I used to be" just off for a full English. Love that x
The walk was lovely, thanks. I enjoyed the fresh air from me armchair as usual.
I loved your phone call to Mummy. How are they doing? Are they in their new house ?
Hope Helen is OK and enjoy your family day.
I can see you and Helen in one of those cottages someday.
Love, as usual, your devoted armchair fan.
What a great tent for brekkie.
Janice x
Thank you Janice. Mum and dad are great thank you. They are living the dream from their caravan in Bridlington. They might be having a granny flat built next to my sisters house xx
Another enjoyable watch . I like the same things as you , .vans like yours . comfy but not too big and cluttered with mod cons . my wife yesterday bought a heated throw blanket to help her arthritis .until the log burner has warmed up . buildings also . nature ,food , etc . went to Hathersage years ago ,saw Little Johns grave .my wife swears its genuine as she is from Nottingham originally . Robin Hood and all that . keep safe .
Back in the early 60’s while I was at Sycamore school in Cantley Doncaster we went on a school trip and I remember going to Sherwood Forest and Little Johns grave. I would have been around 7 or 8. I can remember there being a wrought iron fence around Little John’s grave. Thank you for the memories. I was born in Doncaster but have lived in Canada since 1966. I am loving your videos.
Thank you, I'm glad you like the videos. 😊
It's often concerned me, watching some of your videos if you ever got hit by a passing vehicle. Anyway I'm sure you know what you're doing sll, stay safe and keep making the great vids 👍
Thank you, I am always thinking about that too so try to park where there's not much chance
Hi james , me and wife love watching your content and the colours in the wooded area in Grindleford look absolutely stunning . Might be very cold for you but your experiencing some lovely wonders of nature , keep up the good work , nice change from keep eating fish and chips . Regards Glenn and Marg 👍
Thank you Glenn and Marg 😊
I would suggest "Riddick". For your next movie. Or "Jupiter ascending". I think you would like them.
I must admit there's something very appealing about van life you look very cosy me and the mrs have been to matlock and stayed at the spa hotel we love it 😎
Best thing Ive ever done is van life
Nice town, thanks for sharing with us.
And in the church yard on top of the hill in BLIDWORTH Notts , is the grave of Will Scarlet . The church is said to be where Robin met Marion at times .
‘Are they Heinz, I’m not a bean expert’ 😂. Just discovered your channel, really enjoyed the couple of videos I’ve watched so far 😁👍🏼
Thank you, glad you like them :-)
James a true honest entertaining vid, and how do you find them gems of a walk amazing countryside we have thanks for your video
Nice one! Bloody good van that beats you from Fox House and parks itself down at Grindleford station! AI???
Man bag 😂😂😂😂 great vlog
