  • Опубликовано: 21 сен 2024
  • Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by chair of Migration Watch UK Alp Mehmet as estimated net migration to the UK stood at 685,000 in the year to December 2023.
Some 1.22 million people are estimated to have arrived in the UK in the year, while 532,000 are likely to have left. This is down 10 per cent from the year before.
Mr Mehmet slams the figures, saying the Government has not got a grip on legal migration.

      @james970027 4 месяца назад +8

Yep, that claims been dismissed so many times now - the reality is immigration costs us more when individuals stay than the benefits we get from it.
The only people who benefit are business owners who get cheap labour, and universities who overcharge foreign students for subpar courses.
Don't get me wrong there are some highly valued people who come here legally - the problem is the bench is set so low the majority aren't really that valuable to the country. It was laughable for example to see many kick off when the change took place to the amount a UK individual had to earn to bring non UK resident to permanently live in this country... Like why should you be able to bring people to this country whether they are your family or not when previously the wage boundary was so low - you couldn't even afford to support yourself on that wage, let alone other people.

I did my bit standing for this party but voters decided to put Labour into power again here on those occasions.
They got a bloody nose this year. Labour ousted by a Muslim independent candidate by 348 votes with the Labour votes down. Muslims rejected Labour for one of their own and why not? He said he will fight for minorities rights.

If France knowingly allows overloaded and unseaworthy boats carrying migrants to depart from its shores across the English Channel, it raises significant legal, moral, and political questions. The issue of whether France is facilitating a crime depends on the application of both domestic and international law, which imposes obligations on France that it cannot disregard.
    1. International Maritime Law and France’s Legal Obligations
Under international maritime law, France, as a coastal state, has clear duties regarding the safety of vessels departing from its ports:
    - UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Article 94): France is required to ensure that vessels flying its flag or operating within its jurisdiction are seaworthy and comply with international safety standards. If France knowingly permits unseaworthy and overloaded vessels to depart, it could be seen as neglecting these obligations. The law compels France to prevent such vessels from launching, as their departure breaches these safety standards.
    - SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea): France is also responsible for enforcing safety regulations on vessels within its jurisdiction. Allowing boats that are clearly unfit for crossing the Channel to leave its shores violates France’s obligation under SOLAS to ensure maritime safety. The law mandates that France take active measures to prevent the departure of unsafe boats, making inaction potentially unlawful.
In principle, if French authorities knowingly allow unsafe boats to leave, they fail to meet these international safety obligations, which could be interpreted as facilitating dangerous activity. Although these treaties do not directly criminalise such behaviour, they compel France to uphold safety standards and take preventive action.
    2. Facilitation of Human Smuggling and Domestic Law
Facilitating illegal migration and human smuggling are crimes under both international and domestic law:
    - Protocol Against the Smuggling of Migrants (2000): This UN protocol, which supplements the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, requires states to take action to prevent and combat the smuggling of migrants. It criminalises the act of enabling illegal entry or transit into another state, particularly when done for financial gain. France is compelled by this protocol to take proactive steps to prevent smuggling operations from its territory.
    - French Domestic Law: French law criminalises human trafficking and knowingly facilitating illegal migration. This includes actions (or deliberate inaction) that enable the departure of boats which are clearly unseaworthy and pose a significant risk to life. If French authorities are shown to have allowed these dangerous journeys to proceed, they could be accused of complicity in facilitating illegal migration, which is a criminal offence under French law. The law obliges France to intervene and stop such departures.
    3. The Role of Evidence and Media Reporting
Recent video footage and media reports showing French police standing by as overloaded boats are launched bolster claims that France is neglecting its legal duties. Such evidence suggests that France is not fully complying with its obligations under both international maritime law and its own domestic legislation.
If it is established that French authorities knowingly allow unsafe boats to cross the Channel without intervention, the UK could argue that France is failing to meet its international commitments. This evidence could be used to exert diplomatic pressure, with the UK demanding stronger enforcement and a more proactive approach from France.
    4. Comparing France and Belgium’s Approaches
Belgium’s stricter stance on preventing migrant crossings contrasts sharply with France’s approach. Belgium actively intercepts boats and dismantles smuggling networks before they can launch. France, while conducting patrols, has been criticised for not doing enough to prevent departures. The difference in enforcement reflects not only operational capacity but also varying interpretations of legal obligations.
The laws compel France to take similar measures to Belgium, ensuring that no unsafe or illegal crossings are permitted. However, the current situation suggests a gap between France’s legal duties and its actions on the ground.
    Conclusion
International and domestic laws clearly compel France to prevent the launch of overloaded and unseaworthy boats from its shores. The presence of video evidence showing French police standing by raises serious questions about whether France is fulfilling these obligations. While it may not constitute direct criminal facilitation, France’s inaction could be seen as a breach of its international and domestic legal responsibilities. The situation is complex, with legal, political, and operational factors all influencing France’s approach. Stronger enforcement, similar to Belgium’s strategy, is legally mandated and could reduce illegal crossings, but implementing this requires political will and resources. ❤🇬🇧
