Notes and comments:
This is one of the greatest proshots of all time, and perhaps one of Metallica's best shows of all time! They played with so much energy this night, it's amazing to watch. The video quality is crystal clear as is the audio, you couldn't ask for anything more from a single show!

What a set list maaaaaaannnn
I have the MTV source of this show that includes Sad But True and Enter Sandman. I would be happy to send it to you through Dropbox or Google Drive if you will let me know how to get in contact with you.
@@lukepayne6525 wow, why didn't he get in contact with you?
P
Merci beaucoup
Why is James dressed like he`s about to rob a bank
Turk it was probably cold lol
Deltasquad382943
imagine it being cold in the middle of june
He'll rob Rob.
It was St. Anger period and everyone was in a weird phase
lmao, just rewatch the St Anger music video
"If I could have my wasted days back, would I use them to get back on track?" - St. Anger was a great album. Yeah, I said it, and I mean it.
Elmo Blatch few track, like St.Anger,Frantic and Some Kind of Monster are great.Sweet Amber and Unnamed Feeling are OK,but the rest is shit
St anger is my all time favorite metal record. It’s the most powerful and vulnerable record they’ve put out. And I’ve never heard any riffs that come close to what’s in st anger except maybe far beyond driven.
I agree, I’ve been able to listen past the snare drum.
Really good album that didnt get the love it deserved due to poor production
ttp plus the fact that people can’t accept Metallica was changing and so was their sound. Buncha whine ass baby’s. St anger kicks ass
This concert is awesome because it was the first major concert they've played after SCOM, James' Rehab, being absent since 1999. To all Metallica fans, this was a real back-to-form concert. I remember the night MTV aired it. I was on the edge of my seat.
I really got into Metallica in 2000, so this concert was really special to me. I was in front of my TV too. And saw them live for the first time a year later!
James stop drinking in 2001, not 1999.
@@juanrezende4914 i guess he meant absent from big ass huge concerts.
They played Download Festival, Rock im Park and Berlin before this show, but still awesome!!
I was lucky enough to see them play a warmup show at the Fillmore a month before they went on this tour. Greatest concert in my life
James: "We hopefully will make you feel better"... and they play Harvester of sorrow :D
+IIIRattleHeadIII That would make me feel better that's for sure!!!
yes same, but it's NOT meant to :D
1:22:52 unexpected brutal vocal from james hetfield and he nails it!
lars is really amazing in this concert
yeah the tempo is amazingly slowing down at the frantic's intro :P
LMAO you are delusional

+Daniel Carneiro thanks ;)
you are my Favorite kind of person :D
muchas gracias!
There's always a hero in these kind of videos.
lol
12:51 wtf this is by far the best growl i have ever heard from james!!!!
son of a bitch the guitars, james vocals....I'm blown away....really sounds a lot like the black album tour..james vocals definitely doesn't sound as menacing here as he did in his prime but still, he sounds great....gotta love hetfield
The guitar tone here is SHIT compared to the Black Album tour. Ridiculous people in these comments
@@blahzay_ I sometimes wonder if people really have ears...
23:29 Lars and James totally throwing Kirk under the bus lol.
Damn no remorse is underrated... i wanna hear it live a lot more.
overrated*
@@joserico3322 L
Hit the Lights, too is underrated
THE BASS IS AWESOME IN THIS WHOLE SHOW!!
St. Anger sounds fantastic \m/
Now only if they played more of St. Anger.
James Th Last week I've seen Metallica live and they've played St. Anger live. The crowd totally went nuts
Its got some really nice riffs but the goddamn drums are just awful
Frantastic*
Not a single camera phone in sight - amazing!
There were almost no camera phones in 2003 and the ones that were there sucked major ass.
Not that many quality cameras back in 2003
Plus the good ones were like the size of my head haha
Why do people have a problem with me recording a concert? Its no different than the fucking cameras that recorded this show.
Because people focus more on filming than enjoying the show to the fullest.
@@Daneclaw Why do you care what OTHER PEOPLE do at a show? Is it directly affecting your enjoyment? No. It isn't, so quit your whining.
The Edge on rhythm guitar.
43:10 holy shit, chills
i love how James casually walks out and then bam straight to the main riff to blackened
James sounds pretty good here. His voice was lacking in the early 2000s
Nu-Metal-James is not real, he can't hurt you
Nu-Metal-James:
12:53 That growl WOW James looks like his 1991/1993 self (because of his mustache) and at some parts sounds like 1991/1993
I fucking love that growl at that part of the song ! always sounds badass
+Smixx I know right?
RickGrimes41 james was just turning 40 lmao he probably was like wtf i remember when i was just 20
RickGrimes41 2:33
Is it possible because it is the same person?
It's weird cos like these days I say "gee Kirk has gone grey" without realising that this concert is pushing close towards 20 years ago!
Love Frantic. They should play more St. Anger live songs in their set. It's a criminally underappreciated album. Yeah, I said it. I even like that garbage can lid snare.
St Anger is a criminally shitty album. I am honestly embarrassed that they even released it! They were just trying to fit in with the nu-metal scene of the early 2000s....bad times indeed!
Incorrect. That album is far far from any effort to try to "fit in" -- quite the opposite. At one point, Hetfield sings, "I want to set my anger free" four times in a row. The album is a raw howl of mid-life crisis anguish. It is heartfelt, mercilessly heavy, with great riffs and lyrics. Even if it somehow fell into a "nu-metal" genre, it would not diminish its greatness. They boldly made a departure and it succeeded. I listen to that album once a week.
@@patrickcrawford6392 They said many times St Anger was a album meant mostly for them than the fans (because of Jason leaving in 2001 and James going to rehab) so as much as much you want to bitch about how "bad it is" it doesn't change the fact they made the album and they were happy with it. And St Anger has some very underrated and awesome songs.
Patrick Remi what’s criminal about the album? Good thing for us fans your worthless opinion doesn’t mean shit to us. St Anger is one of the rawest albums I’ve ever heard in my life. And you clearly don’t know your shit. They were trying to save themselves on staying together, not giving people what they wanted. This was Metallica in 2002. Either accept it or fuck off.
@@patrickcrawford6392 it was mainly made to sound really angry, and the snare and drum sound was more of a angry garage sound attempt that I actually quite enjoy!
Fuck st anger sound fucking bad ass
Every Metallica live video is full of comments about Lars' double bass. Why has no one mentioned in this video that he fucking nailed the fast double bass in Blackened and St. anger?
+Nuunuu1234 'cuz he was still snorting blow in '03
Nuunuu1234 He was was pretty good on Frantic too!
Everything’s faster when you are on Coke
in this concert james voice is awesome
justice songs without Jason backing vocals aren't the same thing, i even hear his screaming in my head in the right times haha
I was there, literally front row. That was such a amazing concert. have seen them 16 times now. this one belongs to the better shows. Oh that fireworks and loud bangs starting the song one.......SOOO LOOUUDDD. its a shame they dont do it anymore although i can understand because it was absoultely damaging to the ears. Oh and when arriving at the festival, a week after st.anger got released. everybody played lots of the album on the camping ground at their tents whole weekend through, the album was received well. Was a great vibe that concert!
Master of puppets in this concert are simply awesome! I loved metallica after hearing this song! 78:06
I was 15 years old, and I met MetallicA backstage that day after winning a contest. I don't really remember the show, I was too star struck after meeting the man, the legend, James Hetfield himself!
I didn't know better and had them sign St. Anger, wish I could go back in time :p
St Anger my favourite albom. I'm glad to see 2 songs live!
AHAH worst metallica album!
I love St. Anger, too! It's not my favorite album but it's awesome! It's raw, emotional, and stylistically interesting.
i refuse to listen this album,i have only heard one song.garbage
People nowadays: Metallica now sounds better than ever
June 2003 Metallica: Am I a joke to you?
Is it just me or does it feel like three totally different dudes. I just watched the 2000 Baltimore gig and now this. It is so different. Of course I watched the "Some Kind Of Monster" Film, so I know what transpired but it has been quite a while since I've watched videos of this era.
his laugh during "the thing that should not be" hehehehehe i love james and metallica
Blackened is amazing
James sounds very good here
St Anger could've been a good album if they would've actually cared about production quality....songs sound a hell of a lot better live thats for sure....and that band that recorded the entire album with good production value proved that st anger could've been good......I kinda wish kirk would at least stick some solos in those songs live
Nah, it would feel off. St.anger should never have solos put in them, the songs are what they are
@@shamicentertainment1262 They have solos nowadays when played live. Sounds awesome.
I like St. Anger! It's raw, emotional, and stylistically interesting.
Kirk's backing vocals sounds so weird, looks like me singing in the shower, hahahahhahah...
+Henrique Benedusi I don't like it too. Neither Rob's backing vocal.
The truth is that they can't sing they just scream like two assholes in the mic, miss jason!
its because its pretty much the first time hes needed to do this since jason left
Jason on the microphone looks like a fool.
Juan Rezende jason sounded awesome
My first Metallica concert..
I was about 13 or something. That concert was on pirate DVD with S&M and some Apocalyptica's show.
God i miss this holy times!
Тоже после этого диска стал слушать Металлику
Holy shit Harvester sounded awesome!!! \m/
maybe one of the best concerts with Rob. But that doesn't say much when every single show before this is better.
Art Vandelay Mexico 2009, Nimes 2009, Rock am ring 2008
Coltallic no, this its better
rob is probably the best bass player that played in metallica, but he does not fit well in the band's sound. That makes he sound not so good
Miguel d Not even close. James voice isn't that great here, neither is the tone.
james voice fucking sucked in mexico 2009, especially when they played ride the lightning. "flash before my eyyeeeeeeeeehhz, now its time to di-eeehhhhhhhhhhh" like fuck that sounded bad
If you went to a Metallica concert in 03, you left with bleeding ears. Their mid range was turned up so high that year.
one of the best concert-experiences of my life
Love this show, but 41:24 made me lol :D
40:58-41:00 sow-ow-ound
The song St.Anger itself and the whole recording are amazing. Love it especially for work outs/runs
I love St. Anger! I don't workout or run. I just blast it!
One of metallicas best set lists EVER. Solid show
This was my first Metallica show. Made it twice as amazing for me to be there. great show!!
0:25 Lars drinking his German orange juice. Made with real German oranges!
James was so fucking hungry and into it here, it was like 3 years of barely playing live, you could tell they were excited to get back on stage, unlike now where they seem a bit bored
35:13 YEEAAH JAMES!!
This sounds really good! The backing vocals don't, but the overall ensemble and James's vocals, it's good. I'm used to Metallica's early 2000 shows sounding like shit, but this is an outlier. Wish they sounded like this now, although they still bring it pretty well live. James just doesn't have this voice anymore.
Swafflemanish you're an idiot
He got his voice back with the Hardwired Album and tour.
Eazy E ever heard of an opinion fuckwit
Amazing performance of "The Thing That Should Not Be" lars did amazing James is great, Kirk killed it, and I have yet to find a bad performance of Rob so
No remorse as seccond track ?!?! This is the most awesome thing ever !!!
This is the only show after '89 that I unironically like.
can someone please explain to me why people hate lars....the man is a legend
His importance was never put in question, however, he became very lazy after 1993 (ish) during live concerts, simplifying and at times avoiding whole drum fills. His footwork also noticeably declined in quality. Years later, he would admit that he no longer practiced his drums, treating them instead as a regular physical workout, like his daily jogs. Many old time Lars fans consider this to be disrespectful to both the fans and his legacy.

Kirks solo in “One” should go down in rock history, thats the Best performance of it ever
Like holy shit man
Can't understand why today's Metallica videos have so bad audio quality. This performance has incredible audio SZ, thanks a lot!
I don't care what you think, this is the band at their most real and ferocious. Even though not played here, Dirty Window and Sweet Amber are the cool tracks on the record.
I remember seeing this show live on TV back then. 14 years ago, fuck!
43:13 tell it all
Anyone saying Lars was bad after 1991 or 2000, please note that he nailed every single bit of every song at this gig (the exception being Sanitarium, but that wasn't just Lars). Also note, that he beyond nailed the double bass parts in Blackened, St. Anger, One, and Battery, and actually ADDED double bass fills throughout the entire second half of No Remorse.
I wish Metallica have this concert in their repository and will do a remix like they’ve done it recently with Seattle and couple songs from AJFA.
Blackened is my fav song, and kirk messep up the solo. nononononono :(
The last year James had the blonde/brunette moustache
i was at this concert. my first metallica show.
1:35:08 I`m Creeping Deaaaaaaaaaa
I wish there was video of the comeback concert like the one that was teased in the SKOM movie, I thought this was it but it's not. Still a sick show!
Been searching RUclips for it, and still found nothing! If you do, please share. Really wanted to watch their first ever live after all that.
Just like the video description claims, this is one of their best shows. Ever.
They sound great, they play great, Het's back from re-hab & while the fury of youth may have waned, their passion burns hot as ever here & it's a joy to watch & listen to.
A concert by Metallica without any songs from the load and reload is a good concert.
Im glad, that Metallica had returned back to the roots with Death Magnetic and Hardwired .
amazing gig
amazing frantic version
Sanitarium! Don't cry don't be afraid don't ask so I want to say after listening to this track!!! 22:25
James vocals are amazing
This was my first festival. I can remember that St. Anger came out on this week and somebody of us brought it to our camping place. We listen to the album once and said "hopefully they won´t play anything of this on sunday".
And then they played it and blew your head off because it sounds so badass live. Almost 20 years later it's a very unique and classic addition to their discography.
Had to check the title 5 times because I didn't believe this performance was from 2003 it sounds too good
They always do Nothing Else Matters better live than it was on the album. A change as to when the drums come in, builds better, and a more satisfying close.
Absolutely insane performance, kirk's shred in One was facking amazing Holy Shit🤘
Rob bemutatkozó koncertje a Metallicával! Isteni volt!
I saw them in Scotland a few days before or after this show. It was awesome.
Lars is playing so good here, i'm surprised
You clearly didn't watch "Sanitarium". Watch from 23:10 to 23:47.
metjovi i truly didn't hahah
I don't know. James terrible singing is making Lars look good actually...
Can someone tell me what song Lars plays from 23:10 to 23:47?
I know the band is playing "Sanitarium", but what the hell is Lars playing?
That's actually true lol
Frantic! Man i love this song
When James looked like The Edge from U2.
That bass in harvester of sorrow! Totally awesome!
James voice had left the building at this time. Actually just a little before 2000. And that one, ughhh...so bad. ;o(
I love those Mesa stacks on both sides. So Rock and Roll... ;) Cheers.
51:33 holy shit
Jake Bonn Who is that?
James Hetfield, Frontman for Metallica
legendary band, legendary festival, legendary circuit I love this
I don’t think anyone will ever see that many Mesa Rectifiers in one cluster like that ever again. God damn...
Sanitarium best woooooooooooooah !
James' singing is fucking great
I think this is an amazing guitar tone!
love the beginning and the concert but the 2014 concert of metallica is even better wow
AWESOME SHOW / MIX!
Papa het sounds so powerful here, beasting with the handlebar
well besides roberts backing vocals...lol.....Blackened is FEROCIOUS!!!
After this show Trujillo got the memo of just wearing Black. 🤘🏻🔥
I like the Rectifier Mesa Boogies in the back of them, great amps I hope they still use them!!!!
Great tone here
