  • Learning Final Cut Pro can be a little intimidating, so this quick video will help you get the app up and running by changing a few very important settings and creating custom keyboard shortcuts that will save a ton of time as you work on projects.
    Of course, all of these changes are purely my own recommendations, so feel free to customize anything and everything in a way that works best for you (but I do strongly recommend changing the S key to "Blade All" as it will really make things easy).
    🎬 I edited this video (and all my videos) with Final Cut Pro. If you want to learn how I edit, check out my online course: learnfinalcutpro.com

    Awesome video Tom! I've been considering Final Cut for awhile but have been pretty happy with resolve studio. Looks like it has some solid features for the price though- might just have to try it out and use both for awhile. Thanks for all you do with your channel. You helped me choose my RE20 from your awesome review of it. Keep up the great work man.

      Resolve is pretty rad, and if that's what you're used to there's no real reason to switch over to FCP. I like that both apps are the same price with no subscriptions.
      Glad the channel has been helpful and hope you're enjoying the RE20!

    Now, this is the tutorial that I need for FCP. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to produce this video. I shall certainly be incorporating what you suggest such as audio and auto-rendering. Just a quick question regarding as I have a slightly old computer (MacBook Pro 2019) - what would be a worthy upgrade for someone who uses their old Intel-based MacBook for online teaching as well as video editing? I need a suitable upgrade which wouldn't cost the Earth. I ended up spending £3,500 for my 2019 MacBook all those years ago which I regret.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 месяца назад +1

      I was in the same boat as you- my previous MacBook was a 2019 Intel i9 that I dropped a ton of money on. I liked it just fine, but then I bought the base model M1 Mac Mini for like $600 when it was released and it outperformed the MacBook in every way. And not just by a little- by a HUGE margin.
      So now at this point, any of the M series Macs will be a massive upgrade. My main MacBook for the past 2+ years has been an M1 Max MacBook Pro, and I have no plans to upgrade any time soon because it handles everything I can throw at it and more. It also has the SD card slot and HDMI output, which are hugely helpful.
      And if you're doing online teaching, an M series computer will also be a huge upgrade because they're so much quieter. My Intel MacBook's fans used to be so loud that I literally had to hide it under my desk sometimes when teaching online 🫠

      My MBP is from 2014. It stills runs great but certainly worthy of an upgrade. I’ve maxed out the MacOS on it so I can’t update it anymore 😅

    • @SeoulForeigner
      @SeoulForeigner 4 месяца назад

      @@tombuck thanks so much. I was considering getting the base model Mac Mini to help me with my online teaching, video editing and live streaming. I have noticed that connecting multiple devices to my five year old MacBook grinds it to a halt from time to time, especially if I’m screen sharing or connecting my Sony ZV-1 as a webcam.
      I suppose the benefit of getting a base model M1 Mac Mini is that I can connect my external SSD to it also and get things working hunky dory.
      I’ll have to do quite a bit more online teaching now to save up for the M1 Mac Mini and cannot wait. Looking forward to getting things moving for 2024.

    Well, In the future I’ll or might be going to use this (Final Cut Pro!) as my main video editor.
    And I’m still sticking with CapCut. 😅
    Btw, This is still my big dream to edit a video on a such professional video editor like this one. 😄
    because i like the professional editing stuff in there.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 месяца назад +1

      I've heard great things about CapCut (especially in terms of how fast it lets you make stuff)!
      I really love Final Cut, and I know it's not the flashiest app anymore, but it's so dang smooth and reliable. It gets out of the way and lets me do what I need to do. And there's a lot of power under the hood- it's just not always immediately obvious.

  • @PhillipRPeck

    I think it might be kind of the opposite with background render. If you have a powerful computer, you don't need it to constantly render your timeline because the computer won't struggle with smooth playback. But if your computer is struggling to get smooth playback, then it would be beneficial for it to render the problem areas so that you're not trying to edit a slide show. It's also important for people to understand that FCP will gobble up all the space on your hard drive in about 5 minutes with background render turned on so you really need to have a lot of storage or even just pay attention to where all those cache and temporary files are going

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 месяца назад +1

      I have a few videos that talk about deleting generated library files, because yeah, it's like a goldfish that will take as much available space as possible.
      As for performance, this is all just based on my personal experience, but even with a moderately powerful computer playback has been better with background render enabled (also including things like transitions, titles, stabilization, generators, etc). It also cuts down on exporting time significantly since the timeline doesn't need to be rendered from scratch.
      Could be a different story with an absolutely maxed out computer though.

  • @wnms

    I think FCP is less and less relevant... From the beginner level is bitten by CapCut, and from Pro level is eaten by DaVinci Resolve.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 месяца назад +4

      I could definitely share a few thoughts with Apple on how they've dropped the ball with FCP over the years, but it's still a rock solid app, especially for individual editors. Nothing else really comes close in terms of fluidity, reliability, and overall speed (once you learn the basics).
      CapCut is a pretty different beast so I don't know if it's a direct competitor, but like you said, it is becoming the go-to for beginners. Resolve is phenomenal and definitely deserves the praise it's getting.
      I think a big misconception is that Final Cut Pro isn't "Pro" enough, but I think it's just that it takes a very different approach form other apps.
      Resolve is like a buffet that puts everything it has right out in the open the first time you launch it, whereas FCP is more like a restaurant with a menu: you only see what it has when you ask for it. But in the end, each has very similar ingredients (Resolve definitely being more powerful with coloring though, of course).
