I never, never in a thousand years expected you to come up with this album! Kudos to you. Sally's music is very magical, romantic, peacegiving and.....just great to listen to.
This is an absolute fantastic album. So glad you dipped into it. It will get more adventurous as the songs continue. She has a magical voice with a great range. And the imagination that fits in well with the Oldfield legacy. Thanks for another great reaction video. Enjoy.
Hey Justin, you missed that you have heard Sally Oldfield before. She is the singer on Steve Hackett’s Shadow of the Hierophant. Beautiful voice, for sure. Thank you for playing this track!
”The Sallyangie were a 1960s folk duo consisting of siblings Mike and Sally Oldfield. In 1968 they released their first and only album Children of the Sun. The duo split in late 1969 after limited success and a national tour.” It’s a pretty good album too
I love her voice and the style of her singing. Water Bearer is my favourite album by Sally Oldfield. I think it is partly based on "The Lord of the Rings" and all songs merge into each other. Love it 🙂
I first paid attention to her for her lead vocals on Steve Hackett's debut album "Voyage of the Acolyte" and when I discovered her reocrd in a store I immediately bought it.. This album is a little bit special to me because it is relaxed but not relaxing: will say I need to be relaxed before I hear it to enjoy it. Otherwise it can make me more nervous than I am. There is no other album that has this effect on me and I find that really strange. But being in the relaxed mood I like the album very much. Her voice sounds so fragile sometimes that it is really touching. Some of the lyrics on it are inspired by Tolkiens's Silmarillion by the way.
The folk music sound is calling you Justin. Lash yourself to the ship's mainmast before it draws you onto the rocks. : )) Never heard of her. This was a pleasant surprise.
This amazing song/album was actually recommended to me by someone commenting on some of your videos long ago, might've been some of the usernames you mentioned. I remember he/she was trying to make up a band consisting of some of greatest female musicians and Sally was one of 'em, just a fun little anecdote lol... Anyway thanks to the people recommending this great music! 🙏 👏
Water Bearer is also another name for the constellation Aquarius. I see, or rather hear her as one of the "British school" folk singers in the vein of Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span, Annie Haslam of Renaissance or Jacqui McShee of Pentangle.
Beautiful vocals, ethereal, dreamy music drawing on her Irish roots. Love this track. Can I recommend 'Mirrors' as well - it was the top 20 single from this album.
This album really is a hidden gem. Though Mirrors reached #19 in the UK charts her work is highly underappriciated imo. I hope you will react to the rest of the album.
Wooooooah this is good!! I can't believe I never got around to listening to my favorite musician's own sister! It's a great feel, she has a really charming voice, super smooth production, sounds just a little ahead of its time. Yes I agree about the feminine feeling, I think in a similar way as Kate Bush and Bjork - tho much more even and gentle. I'm def gonna listen to the whole thing. I need to give the Sallyangie another listen too - that was when Mike and Sally did a one-off folk duo album before Mike was even well known! I remember it being decent but I wasn't struck by it, so I'll have to give it more of a chance. Just saw you post the Wall! Gonna enjoy that later today : )
O_o . . . what the heck. I just looked her up. She's got a bunch of albums! This is just her debut. I was still assuming she only did like one or two solos. What a surprise!
This was such an exciting album when it first emerged in the late 70s. Recommended trying Three Rings and Secret Songs which were high points from her later career.
I'd heard of Sally Oldfield but don't remember hearing any of her music before. This sounds fine to me. The water bearer is the constellation Aquarius, so maybe there's some astrological meaning in the lyrics?
Give me the pleasant folky ambience of this song ahead of anything her more revered brother has to offer. Would definitely like to hear more, if this track is indicative of the sound she is generally known for. Nice! ✨️
This, her debut, strangely is her best and most mature album. But the following four albums (Celebration, Playing in the Flame, In Concert, Strange Day in Berlin) also have great moments. After that she turned to rather boring mainstream pop.
I thought you would like this album JP, Sally has such a pure and unique voice, great production on this album too, this a a lovely album opener. Some of the songs on this album are remakes from her album she made with Mike in 1968 when they were the duo, The Sallyangie.
I recommend to listen sally oldfield álbum with Mike called Children of the sun from the 60's because you will find more sense in rest of music of mike and sally. What you said about the woman voice of Sally (little sexy I think) you can find as well (more examples) in the album children of the sun. You are a very intuitive guy because I have been listening this music for 30 years and you got everything (or almost everything) in the first listening so... wow. I appreciate your opinions a lot.
You really got the "elements" of Sally's music. Reminds you of Incantations era Mike Oldfield in terms of production, doesn't it? It was recorded the same year.
They both released their first album in 78, so i don't think one can claim having influenced the other. The main influence i hear is that of her brother Mike.
@@benoitdesmarais2948 Sally is older than Mike, on their early duo album she seems to be the driving force, and I think she has written more great tunes on her albums than Mike. Comparing their two respective best albums, Water Bearer and Tubular Bells, I find it hard to tell which is better. If I only could take one of these with me to a lonely island, I guess it would be Water Bearer because of the great voice.
@@NuntiusLegis I'm on Mike's theme, i only like a handful of songs of Sally's after Waterbearer, whereas i think Mike actually got better as the 70's went by (Ommadawn and Incantations are on top for me), and i would say his songs with Maggie Reilly are Waterbearer-like top material: Moonlight Shadow, To France, High Places...
@@benoitdesmarais2948 The later pop songs like Moonlight Shadow are a bit too conventional for my taste, Water Bearer is more idiosyncratic and mystical.
I do like her voice but some bits were a bit too repetitive such as the title sung over and over at the beginning and a riff later on that could have used a change-up.
That failed to hit any buttons for me. Rather tiresome, if I'm being honest, and the sort of thing I'd walk away from without a further thought as I sought out something more interesting and appealing. If I never heard any more of this sort of thing, I would barely miss it but I suspect there will be more coming now...
Humdrum, drab, repetitive, and with no redeeming features. And do we really need another oldfield on the channel. One's enough surely, and we get too much of him in my book without dragging his tiresome sibblings into the mix :)
Duck's off then? No! We still have Duck Surprise! & Wot happens if u don't. like. Duck??. Well I'm afraid you're.. rather stuck. Well fortunately I love it! Crises Crises u can't ger away. I personally admire post hippy Oldfield. So unhip it hurts. Yet strangely and stubbornly innovative in his own back yard. The ABBA of Progness. I for one will still enjoy discovering whether he adapted his guitar tones by the 90s and beyond!
@@HippoYnYrEira No, i've said it before, but it's worth saying again. He hit paydirt with his first LP, and from then on it was all downhill. Well, for me anyway... Now me, I love duck too, but I more in the mood for a Waldorf salad. Only if they haven't run out of Waldorf's of course :)

Hey Justin, you missed that you have heard Sally Oldfield before. She is the singer on Steve Hackett’s Shadow of the Hierophant. Beautiful voice, for sure. Thank you for playing this track!
Not to mention Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations!
@@moewil1744 True enough. But I know Justin loves Steve Hackett, hence the shoutout.
Well, that's a blast from the past! Good stuff, lol.

Yeah, you should definitely check that album out, Justin. It's got some strange and beautiful moments.
I love her voice and the style of her singing. Water Bearer is my favourite album by Sally Oldfield. I think it is partly based on "The Lord of the Rings" and all songs merge into each other. Love it 🙂
The next track is "Songs of Quendi" divided in several parts. :)
That brought a smile, on a bad day. Thank you. Peace & Love.
Hey Just... Let's see if you dare one day and react to a wonderful group from the 70s. The Rubettes and their song "Sugar Baby Love" A hug.
Have her album and connects nostalgically to my student days in Winchester UK 1975
Strongly recommend her 1983 record 'Strange Day in Berlin', co-produced by Hans Zimmer. The title track, along with 'Path With a Heart' are standouts.
I have a soft spot for some of Sally's stuff. I own this album and Strange Day In Berlin and both have their moments.
Me too 👍. Plus the 1982 live album Sally Oldfield in Concert
Celebration and Playing in the Flame complete the list of her good albums.
We also have Terry; their brother
:-)

This brought back memories! I purchased this WAY back in college. Thank you!
Yes Sally has done some great stuff too. She has about a dozen solo albums. Every one has some really great tracks.
