These arguments for and against are tiring. I love love love Jerry. There is no substitute. I love love love Trey. He is one of a kind. They are both guitar gods who could inspire tectonic shifts in the earth's crust. I've seen both bands more times than I can count and love both equally, but in different ways. It's like poo pooing Thai food because you love Japanese. Jerry would have appreciated Trey's playing had he ever went to a show. No one, ever, is going to play a GD song better than Jerry. And Jerry couldn't drop a Tweezer bomb quite like Trey. Peace, love, and Jam
right on! its such a bs attitude about music. this ones a better drummer, that ones a better guitarist. People need to wake up and realize that music influences us all differently and what may resonate with some, may not resonate with others but its not right or wrong. and there is no music that you are garaunteed a ticket to heaven for listening to. all those guitar notes same the same from a mile away from a large festival on a mountain in Vermont. ribbons of sound weaving their way through the hills.
+TheGoKitchen I've heard the banter and I'm a thinker. Reasons people talk/fight/debate aside, I think that people who are strongly for one band more than the other just have all they need so have not sought out more music. Then they have one favorite. (It's often the deadheads against phish though, rare to find a phishhead who doesn't also love the dead). Going with your strong point, I feel super lucky to have the wealth of the music of both bands, that is just so much high quality song and show right there. Have a happy day ♥
There will never be another Jerry obviously, but the music must live on and there are few better musicians to carry on these songs in live performance settings than Trey Anastasio.
I remember screaming ALTHEA! like a maniac before this started. The feeling when I heard those first notes. I'll never forget it, I think I can honestlu say those were the funnest two weeks of my life
I have seen dead shows from 1975 live to the last ones many Jerry shows what trey did here was make me feel good again l don't care what anyone else think that althea was real good thank you trey
Huge dead head here. I will say trey does an amazing job every time he covers a song. Phil and friends had a wicked ripping Althea last year though and I’ll never forget how damn strong it came off.
Trey's guitar work feels solid, but I sure do miss the way Jerry's voice could ring out in this one... So grateful for all these videos floating around out there!!
Jeff is the best since Brent hands down. Wish Brent could have navigated the Dead’s success in a better way and he might still be with us. Some just don’t handle success easily, which ultimately ended tragically for Brent.
Huge Phan here, at these shows too, i jist heard an old interview and wanted to lostennto it again. So much love to all the youtubers and the bands for putting stuff up and not taking it down.
Trey does a damn good job as a lead in a band thats been around for 50 years with only a few months of practice. There are only a few times during the fare thee well shows where it feels awkward. amazing considering the way he stepped up and through the pressure.
I’m glad Trey got to play these shows with the fellas. I’m not even a Phish guy. But Trey is the right player. He can’t deliver a ballad like Jerry vocally, but he did damn good.
Trey and Jerry are both the most creative guitarists to me, and I think while Trey might be the more technically skilled player, I think Jerry was able to make music that stands up with the likes of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Miles Davis, and the kind of people who would be the Mount Rushmore of American music.
Love this as a GD/PHISH fan! I haven't watched it in a long time. I like it more now than I did before. Stop whining, critics and experts. By the way, Phish is still killing it in 2023. That's for the Phish nerds who crow about not being a Phan since '97 or some shit like that. Grow up!
I love this song. Good job Trey. I am getting tired of all the comparing Trey to Jerry. The dead shows sound better than I thought they would. For the past few years all I have listened to is Phil and Friends shows.
even tho im only 30 years old, have had several chances to see jerry live and passed all of them up because i just didnt understand im still eternally grateful forever. i miss jerry so much and cant wait to meet him on the other side. heres to another grateful 50 years and many more (~);}
Karol Kuyper im a decade older than you but im in the same boat.. I didn't get this kind of music when I was young.. discoverd my love for the dead after jerry was gone. phish helped me with that.
Trey did a great job stepping up to jerrys spot. Watch the new yorker festival interview with trey and he talks about how he perceived his role in the dead, and how the other members did, actually very interesting
www.relix.com/articles/detail/the_days_between_trey_anastasio_reflects_on_his_time_in_dead_camp#ixzz4QskfNlJj another great interview with Trey giving some insight to the shows
Being such a big Phish fan I was so proud of Trey for killing it musically but for also giving Dead fans a taste of what their Legendary band sounded Like for many many years. Hope to see lots of Dead fans @ Magnaball 🐟
trey looks like he got his first taste of "too many notes" when he was about to sing during the piano solo, he gets this look like "ohhh thats what mike meant."
Today I think Jerry is Althea. But I been listening for decades so it's bound to change I hope. The only thing I want out of life is to never know for sure what the writers meant.
Internal conflict with a "higher power", but also clever and subtle with relevant wisdom for the world. "I was born to be a bachelor", which is soon followed with the line about trying to catch her, which is likely atheism, accepting that there is no god, and the struggle for spirituality as an atheist Also, a lot of this is about self-identify and the struggle in finding it in a positive way
It's amazing that Trey was able to emulate Jerry's tone so well. Shout out to all the techs from years past who helped him out. I have a pretty good idea that Trey exhausted every resource he could in doing homework for this run of shows. I think Jerry would've dug this.
Where did this footage come from? I noticed the camera never leaves Trey other than one zoom out. The mix on the audio is fantastic, but I don't believe this video is from the original stream -- am I correct?
Great stuff! Trey's Languedoc just doesn't have the tone Jerry had (that thick, scary tone he cultivated over years and years) - Trey sounds a little "thin" tone-wise, but man is he an awesome player! I'm glad to see he sang Jerry, too. pretty great...thanks for posting!
Check out the piece of equipment displaying the chord names on the right side of the screen. I think it's a tuner they left on or something :P Cool stuff
This was one of my favorite performances of the Fare Thee Well shows. I can see why traditionalists wouldn't like it, because it doesn't sound like any Jerry version I've heard. Obviously nobody plays or sings this song as well as Jerry did, but I like Trey's take on it.
