To see a kid who used to play the dead at college parties in Burlington, VT go on to be the last member of the band, especially during the moment where he locks in with bob and phil, is truly a profound experience to witness.
In 1989 I was just drinking some beers in a Portland, ME bar, Trey played a solo acoustic set for about a dozen of us that night. Talent so obvious, still remarkable to watch this and know what a long, strange trip life really is.
Of the hundreds of shows I've seen, this song on this night was the pinnacle. Had prayed all weekend they'd save this song for the show I went to and I got my wish in epic fashion.
I thought I got to the party a bit late, 1969. As it turns out I caught most of the long strange trip. The late 70's and 80-81 were my most active touring years. Around a job and a few responsibilities, I still managed to get 3 or 4 6-7 show runs in each year. The surviving members are old and gray like I am. But the spirit still burns tremendously bright. And on my worst days, a Grateful Dead tune still puts a smile on my face and glow in my heart. It has been 45 years of listening for me, so lets just round it off and call it a life time. To everyone who ever graced the stage or filled the halls. For everyone who sold goodies in the parking lot and scrounged for tickets. To those of you filling the stadiums and who brought the cow pastures to life the day after a rodeo, this is where it all ends.............or does it? What a long strange trip it's been.
Fire is still burning Brightly here !!! 40 years of listening , under my belt to call me child !! Finding New Boxes of Rain every day on you tube, still music to fill the air !!! I learned a while back that The Music is the Truly one thing life that Never , disappoints , leaves , etc , Seems my love Still grows stronger every day 😇😇😇 , you can always count on The Heart of Gold Band always being there for us when we need a shoulder , to soothe our souls , make us Smile Smile Smile 😁 , Soo very lucky I wandered on to the Bus !!!
The vibe is never ending. It will always keep going with top tribute bands after they are dead or can't play anymore. I would bet for the next hundred years even!
set 1 closer on last day of the grateful dead....this is one of the best performances of all 5 shows everyone steps up and bobby finds his voice. trey you are the hero of the summer of 2015 and 20 years from now do this again when you are 70.
Can't say I've ever watched another video that put as big of a smile on my face as this one. As a phan who grew up with deadhead parents these shows were the child of my favorite two musical entities, doesn't get much better than this
Amazing that if someone predicted what the standout moment would've been from the Fare Thee Well shows prior to the concerts, I doubt you would've gotten a single person to guess that Throwing Stones would've been the highlight of the 3 days. Turns out that that just may be the case as this version was incredibly good, maybe the best moment of the 3 nights.
+Cam D. Nesbitt That's great and that's what it's all about. Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones that came out perfect. Just the fact that it felt sweeter to you is all that matters. Those moments are what made the GD the GD
I can't hear any lead guitar, aside from during the solo. I understand the whole thing where trey didn't want to overshadow the other band members with his playing, but actually I think it would've sounded better if he did play a little more aggressively, in my opinion
+rm1133 Always one of the best and under rated Dead tunes,Jerry always ripped on this tune.Definetly the highlight of the run.The only tune Bobby didnt ripcord Trey. TREY FACE!!!!!!
+rm1133 I agree with you 100%. I was in the building that night and I can tell you that everyone was buzzing during the set break over this solo. Trey was steering the ship for this one.
Gotta love that Bobby Weir, telling it like it fuckin is. Thank God for the Grateful Dead and all the boys, Bob, Phil, Billy, Mickey and Jerry, showing us all the light, one drop at a time.
This was an incredible moment of musical synergy. Forget the editorial to and fro, ebb and flow, etc. - too slow, too old, California was better, blah, blah, blah,..... All I can tell you is that I was there, probably 100 rows back, maybe 150. 33 years removed from my first show. This song was pure magic. My smile was so wide it hurt. Watch Phil break in to a an uncontrollable grin at about 8:20 into this video. That image says it all....
Possibly the last great jam with the core 4. Rippin jam in the traditional part after "we are on our own" Saw 250+ between 85 to now and i still jam to this one. 11-2-85 at richmond was my 2nd show and that version still rates.
We had a very long day although this song always chills me out the melodic rythym guitar is Awesome I had a long weekend but grateful times up the road God Bless America & May god Bless Martin dickey with a new Job at the Tulsa Oklahoma Home Depot 41st or 71st or downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma Home Depot! I talked to Monty & James tonite therefore my life has Changed for the better! This song was the definition of survivors it is A Classic May God Bless America & the world may world peace ring throughout all of our precious Earth peace I leave with you may God bless the Grateful dead' s music & may it be preserved for generations to come! Amen Bro
+Dean Esmay WTF? Barely there!? This band hardly rehearsed together for these shows, & yet they blew away any Dead incarnation since Jerry died. If it weren't for Trey & Phil these shows would've sucked & had zero energy. Just like Dead & Co. Every jaw was on the floor after the first set, & it wasn't because Trey was "barely there".
Yeah, John Mayer sings sooooo well. Makes me wet. And those generic "jams" just blow me away. You obviously weren't at Fare thee Well. I've seen Dead & Co. It's not even a contest.
Wherever he goes the people all complain 😂 nah, this wasn’t the performance that turned me into a phan, but it certainly got me to pay attention to him and Phish. Then 2 years later Baker’s Dozen happened and I told myself I would devote the rest of my life to seeing Phish as much as possible.
I remember watching. n at 7:35 trey n bob connection the sound n the feeling was so intense I started crying so awesome dead n company are on fire but I can't wait to hear throwing stones cuz thisone is gonna be hard to top holy shit
As a fan of Phish and the Dead, I gotta say I think Trey’s solo here is better than Jerry did on every live recording I can find. Listened to about 10 versions of the dead playing this and keep coming back for the Trey version!
Agree with all the posters re this being the highlight of Fare Thee Well, especially 3:52. I was at the Frost Amphitheater 10/10/82 trippin' and always thought Throwing Stones was among Weir's very best. Wearing a t-shirt saying "Let Trey Sing" he should've done so!
I'm a Dead fan through and through and I LOVE Phish as well..Trey's unique sound on the guitar took me a few years to find appealing..but it eventually did..I LOVE Paige and his incredible sound on the keys, Gordon's funky bass lines, Fishman's fast as hell drum lines and I absolutely love Trey's twangy and drawn out notes!! Phish is Phish and that's all there is to it..Trey's sound is so starkly contrasting from Jerry's single note picking though..a style that truly cannot and will not ever be matched..I've seen many Dead cover bands that are phenomenal with DSO being the absolute best ever..Kandlecik is great and Mattson is damn near as good if not better IMO..but having said that the only guitarist that I've ever seen perform that even comes remotely close to JG's sound is Stu Allen..I saw him in Rochester, NY around 2006 with what was the JGB Band and included the great Melvin Seals and Stu absolutely killed it..I hadn't even heard of him till that show..I watch his solo stuff and its great but I love when he jams with Phil and Jackie Greene and Chimenti..that's a SOLID lineup!!! But the 2015 Fare Thee Well shows w/ Trey on lead was somewhat painful to watch with Bobby pointing to Trey at every solo start/finish and Trey's reluctance to 'let loose' and not to mention his desire to sound like Jerry really was too much for me to endure..I just couldn't separate hearing Phish when Trey solo'd from The Dead..I would honestly rather hear John Mayer and Dead and Co. any day than the original GD members w Trey..I give Trey credit though..he gave it his all..I live in the FingerLakes region of upstate NY and there's a cover band based out of Ithaca, NY that used to be called The Lost Sailors who are now known as Terrapin Station and their lead guitarist is VERY good..as is their bassist, backup guitar and keyboardist..Can't wait to see them in the future...have a very Jerry Holidays everyone!!
This is thee first G.D. song I Ever remember hearing, I was probly 6-7 years old then. & then I got to see them play it(this) through my miracle. Frickin' AWSOME!!!!!!!!! LOVE.
Bobby was really relishing in his LEAD role w the band. I think, he was digging Trey... but, was worried Trey would TAKE OVER the JAM.. LOL.... but, Trey was chill.. overall some nice shows.
Ok I like this, don't get me wrong, but I feel like Dead stuff post Jerry has always been in like ever so slightly slower tempo, if it was one beat faster it'd be perfectly pleasurable to my ears
The deads best song. Rat cat alley roll them bones, to meet that cash to feed that jones,...........the rich man in his summer home, he says just leave well enough alone,...... The radical, he rants and raves, saying someone got to turn the page, the kids they dance and shake their bones because it all too clear were on our own.

Y'know that thing we all do sometimes ( at least I do anyways)....when you are 'singing' along to the guitar solo, and trying to re-create those sounds with your mouth? Trey is totally doing that for a large part of his soloing!
To see a kid who used to play the dead at college parties in Burlington, VT go on to be the last member of the band, especially during the moment where he locks in with bob and phil, is truly a profound experience to witness.
So right next to ya, bruh. Wanna hit of this?
In 1989 I was just drinking some beers in a Portland, ME bar, Trey played a solo acoustic set for about a dozen of us that night. Talent so obvious, still remarkable to watch this and know what a long, strange trip life really is.

Your an awesome brother. Reading that just made my day. Love seeing the videos, pics and memories. Rock on!

2022
Music is never gonna stop. It'll just keep on playin'
Still coming back again and again. Pure magic. And amazing to watch Trey's fingers work their magic.
Jerry always shone so brightly on that solo. It was just glorious. Trey gets tons of credit of doing it justice.
the best performance of the entire run.
set 1 closer on last day of the grateful dead....this is one of the best performances of all 5 shows everyone steps up and bobby finds his voice. trey you are the hero of the summer of 2015 and 20 years from now do this again when you are 70.

I was there and this made me so damn happy to hear! Wonderful. Whenever I hear this version it brings me right back to that night. So epic!
Still get goosebumps from the we're on our own jam until the close.
Same!!
Great quality sound & video! I keep playing this over & over! Gotta love those rhythm devils! Thanks so much for sharing!
i was there that night and was grateful to bask in the enormity of this song!
@LazyLightning55a Thanks much, you do a really good job at capturing these moments.
This was the peak of all 5 shows for sure. . . amazing rendition, criminally underrated Grateful Dead tune. Thank you Bobby!
No matter how many times I watch this (or listen to it) it gives me one of those huge, unstoppable grins that kind of make my face hurt.
Amazing that if someone predicted what the standout moment would've been from the Fare Thee Well shows prior to the concerts, I doubt you would've gotten a single person to guess that Throwing Stones would've been the highlight of the 3 days. +Cam D. Nesbitt That's OK, I was just stating an opinion, obviously not all will agree. What was your favorite moment?

powerful shit . I'll never forget the energy in that stadium during that jam.
Love how Mickey is pounding away like just another day at the office. Beyond excellent video as it captures the mood of everyone
how the hell can u dislike this
Devin Reese underrated comment
Easy - where's Bruce Hornsby? I don't think any of the video from this concert shows him.
Maybe they're rich men in their summer homes?
@@thomasberry1379 West La Fadeaway
As good as it gets never again will the music be so bittersweet thanks LL55A
Bobby sounds great. Never forget seeing him do Blackbird live. Love that one!
3:50 bobby giving me chills even 3 years later

Trey nailed it

thanks a ton for posting. TREY IS KILLING IT
Do we know eachother?
TREY ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!
But you can only here him do anything during the solo, otherwise basically nonexistent
+Dean Esmay Hit "like" without even watching the video
Stephen D
Well watch it silly, he's great here. (He was kind of barely there a lot of the time, to be honest, but he was great here.)

Thanks for your great recordings. Wonderful sound, and it's really nice to see the video and see them playing. Great stuff!
1:42 Mickey Hart says to Bill Kreutzmann "Were going too slow" -(SHRUGS, WOOHOO)- lol! ;)
great catch.
musicain5 I caught that to. He said " you were going to slow."
Awesome sound and video quality!!! Thanks for sharing!
Bob was pulling the ripcord on the tunes all weekend long. Still such an epic set of shows, and to me, this was the highlight
He def ripchorded the intro jam there... He was like pull it back in
Amazing! Best videos on RUclips of these shows so far.
Amazing Sound quality, thanks.
Ripping good Throwing Stones to be sure!
thank you for these videos!!! they're incredible
Trey and Bob trading licks, with the Rythem Devils keeping time. WOW !!!!
The torch has been tossed...❤️
This was terrific! Thanks so much for posting it!
trey killed it bobby cut him short, none the less bobbys band. treys solo def gives me goosebumbvs.
Good Lord!!! Trey killin' it!!!

Big Red slayin’ it!!
Trey Rocks it with the Tube screamer!
I wish I went to that show. Great song.
Always love your vids, this is so sweet to see and has meant alot to me. Thanks!
I remember watching. n at 7:35 trey n bob connection the sound n the feeling was so intense I started crying so awesome dead n company are on fire but I can't wait to hear throwing stones cuz thisone is gonna be hard to top holy shit
Travis Otero Same here. Never shed a tear at a concert but there was a few minutes during this song that absolutely blew me away.
Great job
I love it when Trey starts to get into the groove...
trey dig down deep to sound like jerry love it
too much fun! we're all going to miss this!
Nice video man. I was there and it was magical.
As a fan of Phish and the Dead, I gotta say I think Trey’s solo here is better than Jerry did on every live recording I can find. Listened to about 10 versions of the dead playing this and keep coming back for the Trey version!
Throwing Stones brings the house down. Even in the Rose Bowl. 1990
PRAISE GOD!
Two thumbs up.
Nice to see Jay Blakesberg working hard up front...
Bobby is excellent at changing things that NEED said for the time ... @ 3:52
and the whole world full of petty wars >> main staple
this mountains of the moon > throwin' stones that closed set1 on the final night was one of the best segments of the whole run I thought.
I'm a Dead fan through and through and I LOVE Phish as well..Trey's unique sound on the guitar took me a few years to find appealing..but it eventually did..I LOVE Paige and his incredible sound on the keys, Gordon's funky bass lines, Fishman's fast as hell drum lines and I absolutely love Trey's twangy and drawn out notes!! fucking stop
Great work man, really great.
Wow that was so f'in good holy shit
This is thee first G.D. song I Ever remember hearing, I was probly 6-7 years old then. & then I got to see them play it(this) through my miracle. Frickin' AWSOME!!!!!!!!! LOVE.
What a great first set closer this was!!
Bobby was really relishing in his LEAD role w the band. I think, he was digging Trey... but, was worried Trey would TAKE OVER the JAM.. LOL.... but, Trey was chill.. overall some nice shows.
Best video ever
Can't believe it's been one year
The future is here, we are it. We are on our own.
Wow. It slowed down so very much when Bob started singing.
So? It still rocks don't Old people slow down. You're living in 69
Ok I like this, don't get me wrong, but I feel like Dead stuff post Jerry has always been in like ever so slightly slower tempo, if it was one beat faster it'd be perfectly pleasurable to my ears

According to the camera Man there is no keyboard 🍄🍄🍄
The deads best song. Rat cat alley roll them bones, to meet that cash to feed that jones,...........the rich man in his summer home, he says just leave well enough alone,...... The radical, he rants and raves, saying someone got to turn the page, the kids they dance and shake their bones because it all too clear were on our own.
john layden this song is Barlow’s best lyrics, for sure.
Wondrous!
Hey Mickey, wake up. You're putting us to sleep. As usual.
Picture a bright blue ball
Just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity
Paint it with a skin of sky
Brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face
But afraid, we may lay our home to waste
There's a fear down here we can't forget
Hasn't got a name just yet
Always awake, always around
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down
Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime falls
And again the hunt begins and again the blood wind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Staking turf, dividing up meat
Nightmare spook, piece of heat
It's you and me, you and me
Click, flash blade in ghetto night
Rudie's looking for a fight
Rat cat alley roll them bones
Need that cash to feed that jones
And the politician's throwing stones
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down
Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price
Money green or proletarian gray
Selling guns instead of food today
So the kids they dance, and shake their bones
And the politician's throwing stones
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes all fall down
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink, yeah
History's page, it is thusly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own
On our own. On our own. On our own.
If the game is lost then we're all the same
No one left to place or take the blame
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or that shinning ball of blue we can call our home
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
And the politicians, throwing stones
Singing ashes to ashes all fall down
Ashes to ashes, all fall down
Shipping powders back and forth
Singing "black goes south and white comes north"
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing "I got mine and you got yours"
And the current fashions set the pace
Lose your step, fall out of grace
And the radical he rant and rage
Singing "someone got to turn the page"
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing "Just leave well enough alone"
But his pants are down, his cover's blown
And the politicians throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause its all too clear we're on our own
Sing ashes to ashes, all fall down
Ashes to ashes, all fall down
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities
Ashes to Ashes, all fall down (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down) [Repeat: x4]
Wo, fall down, (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down)
Wo, fall down (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down)
Ashes, Ashes all fall down (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down)
Wo, fall down, (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down)
Wo, fall down (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down)
Ashes, Ashes all fall down (Ashes to Ashes, all fall down) [Repeat: x3]

Y'know that thing we all do sometimes ( at least I do anyways)....when you are 'singing' along to the guitar solo, and trying to re-create those sounds with your mouth? Trey is totally doing that for a large part of his soloing!
Ashes to ashes...we all fall down...
rock and roll can never die...
Picture that bright blue ball, spinning, spinning free. It was better a better place with the Grateful Dead for you and me. Thanks LL
Too bad Jerry and Trey were never on stage together. My two favorite musicians - it would have been utopia.
what do you mean? Jerry's right there! ;)
...in spirit
Dear God please let these guys keep playing.......................
Trey's little pull off at 4:29 is fucking filthy.
3:30
I swear listening closely I can hear jerry singing in the crowd and even if it isn’t him it’s nice to think he’s there
Was so much fun to be there

50 years to reach perfection
AWESOME THANKS ❤
Bob is in top form on this one---enjoying his numbers so much more than the ones the other guitar player sings
What's the point of pretending you don't know who "the other guitar" player is?
masterfuol7 whats the point of peretending you think I know who it is?
BlankUberEverybody Bob seems to be a better musician now than ever, since the 70s anyway
