Wish I could have made some Philly shows..all my shows were MSG, Nassau coliseum, Giants stadium and Brendan Byrne arena. I'd have to pick MSG as my fave cause they were always on fire in NY and MSG was a small place to see them at that point.. though the coliseum was even smaller... Nothing like the energy at the Garden. The JFK show was so perfect though from beginning to end! What a way to close down the stadium! 💜✌️🌷⚡💀🎶🎵
I wanna say they played the spectrum more than any major venue..more than msg, coliseum, boston etc and they always seem to put on a damn fine show in Philly but there was never a show I saw that didn't leave me smiling and pumped for the next. After all these years these guys still make me smile no matter the day I'm having. Can't wait til we're all reunited I bet the set list never ends. See you all there!

Cool. I love hearing Standing on the Moon, Jerry always nails it and his voice in these last years was perfect for this song. They only played it 50 times!
I met Jerry Garcia backstage at this show. We hit it off and he offered to mentor me in my guitar playing pilgrimage. We became very close and he confided many of his deepest thoughts with me. Miss him very much!!! RIP Jerry my dear friend!!!
I was at this show (and have it on DVD)...and I still have the ticket stub...section ER, Row 47, Seat 13. I have great memories of this night! Good times!
Same here bro! Remember when the band took their half-time break they left all the house mics on, (and several strange microphone stands in odd places all around the seating sections). The result was everyone's strange conversations coming through house PA all at once! I wish they would have captured THAT on the DVD! What a night that was! 31 years later and I'm still recovering! Whew! 😜

It's all kind of a blur but I'm pretty positive I was at this show. Lol. "So many shows, so little time" was my motto back then. A lifetime of the Dead isn't near enough. I'm sure I've been a Dead Head in other lifetimes, dimensions and realms. Just always felt right at home at shows. Didn't matter the state, nor the city. Always at home. My kind of people. My kind of crowd. And, thankfully, the music never died. RIP Jerry and Brent. It's been such a long, strange trip and I've loved every minute of it! Thanks for so many years of such exceptional music, boys! Keep them coming, please!
It's amazing that a band (with THAT lineup) has been gone for so long now, but we keep listening and commenting in such numbers... I miss The Grateful Dead so much it's a permanent ache inside my heart and soul... God, to stand at the front of that stage and see Jerry looking right at me with a huge smile and a look of such bliss on his face. I know it wasn't ALWAYS like that for him (or for anyone)... I know he suffered terribly for a very long time, and in that, I'm glad he's free... He certainly brought so much joy and happiness to so many for so long, and I know that it took EVERYONE in that band, to BE that band... It wasn't JUST Jerry... In fact, it wasn't REALLY Jerry's band... Bob became the musical director of The Grateful Dead in the mid 1970's... But in many ways they were a band that belonged to everyone!!! No matter what anyone believes it doesn't change how much I miss them! Someone early on said something to the effect of, it's worth being old now just to have been young then. I sort of agree with that! I do feel blessed to see all the amazing bands and artists I've seen over the years, but it's difficult for me that the majority of those bands and artists are gone now... Or WELL past their peak. It occurred to me the other day that we could easily lose the great Paul Mccartney and Ringo Starr in this decade... It made me realize that I really don't want to live in a world where there are no remaining members of The Beatles alive anymore. How foreign and empty that world will be! I'm ten years younger than Sir Paul, but part of me truly hopes I'm taken BEFORE him! Sorry to sound so bleak... It's been a hard year... Hell, it's been a hard life! Thank God for these recordings! They allow my heroes to still sort of inhabit a world they're not really in anymore! As always, ✌🏼 & ❤️ 2the 🌎🌍!
@@kevinlevine5543 yeah, KANSAS is still going strong... with only two original members! They really are a KANSAS tribute band that has made two decent albums, I've listened to them exclusively for a few years now... Great albums, great band, but not KANSAS!
Jerry and Hunter wrote the tunes. So, that makes it Jerry's band in many ways. Bob is the legacy, as are the remaining members. But without Garcia, No Dead. Jerry is smokin hot in this one.

We were beyond blessed to have them while we did. If you’re not moved and smiling by these performances, you’re wasting oxygen for the rest of us.
The prob was Jerry was never that haunted by his probs! I often wonder how modern meds-- esp. for diabetes could've helped him. Not to mention a better diet. Thing is-- Jerry never worried about stuff for long! (Look up the car crash he survived-- we could have lost him then!) And, you know-- here he is-- for the ages!
My late father kept me from this 4 night run, b/c i would miss a soccer game. And with honesty with a person that was an addict of multiple types, but still family. I like to look this as a view of heaven, but i stayed with Dad. No regrets..but man i would have loved to see those shows ;) So glad i can watch them.
Thanks ,to Craig Robert's, and Jim Thompkins. They introduced me to an amazing experience called The Grateful Dead, all the way back in 1977. Baltimore Civic Center. That was one of the most unforgettable evenings that I have ever had the pleasure of partaking of. It will always be one of those highlights of my life. WISH YOU BOTH WELL. YOU TOO Marshall!!!! Those were great days to be young.
Man, Brent's performance of Blow Away is just killer! Always loved that cat, brought a lot of heart to the band, and was a phenomenal artist and addition to the band. His performance here move me to tears. Miss him and Jerry so much sometimes. Great show!
He and Jerry were pouring fuel on each others fire during that interlude pure performance interplay . The guitar licks igniting Brents screams! one of the best dead song performanes i have seen on video. Don't ask for a favorite show ive seen
such a great show, I never tire of this one!!! boy, do I miss Jerry and Brent!!! we are so incredibly lucky to have so much fantastic material from 30 years of their brilliance!!!👌👍✌😁
I was born 4 years after the Jerry died and the grateful dead was no more. How I wish I got to be a part of this... At least we have this amazing catalouge of their live performances. Didnt even get around to seeing Dead and company. You old dead heads are lucky!!!
I didn’t realize the full magnitude of how profound the Dead were until I got sober. Man! Their music sober blooms, bubbles and bursts with pure, unbounded joy. No band like will there ever be. Blessing to Bob and the rest for continuing on. 💀⚡️🌹
Well, What A Long Strange Trip It's Been, Indeed! I have lived in the Philly area for most of my life, and this was one of most important events at that time! The JFK stadium was packed! And, of course, it was hot! But so was this performance! Uniquely beautiful in that way that only the Grateful Dead could create! God Bless the Grateful Dead!
Lot of people talk about their "desert island show," and how it's nearly impossible to really choose one. I honestly think this one is it for me, if I had to say. So much raw emotion start to finish, and Brent is just on absolute fire the whole way. First set is his. Jerry just loving it. Nobody captured the human experience quite like the Dead could, and this whole show does it beautifully. NFA
I was at this concert! It was phenomenal! The musicality of Bobby, Jerry, Phil, Brent, Bill, and Mickey carries on and on. A group of us crazy kids got there early to be at the front of the stage for Bruce Hornsby and the Range and then the first set. For the second set we walked around the field and found seats far away in the stands. It was the last event for JFK Stadium. Practice music! Practice peace!
Man.. losing Brent was really the beginning of the end. They had moments of greatness after but it was like the light went out for Jerry and it's easy to see he couldn't get over the loss. So sad. Jerry aged like 20 years in just a couple years 💔 So deeply and profoundly wish he could have gotten well...he should still be here! 😢
Mike Lenowsky I agree 100%. I’ve said the same thing for years. Brent’s death was the first celebrity death that really hit me. Brent was vastly under appreciated and underrated. The light went out in Jerry when Brent passed. The light flickered, occasionally. After all these years it’s really clear just how important Brent was to the GD.
@@mbass718 Well said. To see them interact and share a musical space. Was a real gift. Check them on July 4 , 89 Truckin' up to Buffalo (On YT) Whole show is a ripper but check Jer and Brent on Not Fade Away. NEVER seen them having that much fun. Oh, and 3-14-90 Let it Grow. Their DNA intermingled. After Brent cashed out Jerry couldn't get grounded, IMHO.
This is my Grateful Dead. I saw my first show in April of '87 and dropped off sometime after Vince Welnick joined. I didn't get as far as JFK, but probably saw them a few times within a week or two of this date. This is like seeing old friends. "Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there."
It’s simply IMPOSSIBLE to watch a late 80’s early 90’s dead show and NOT see multiple comments about Bobby’s shorts. It’s like, come on guys, we all notice it !
Oh, yeah. I try to find vids and boots where Bobby is up in the mix. I love the whole crew but as a rythym guitarist I am really drawn to Bobby;s very special presence.
@@newmania4242 I was just thinking that. In terms of rhythm guitarists, Bobby was and is, an extremely outstanding, and very underrated one. I mean, look who he had to play next to. That being said, seriously, from a musicians viewpoint, he did all the things an efficient rhythm player is supposed to do. He used inversions, thumb chords, triads and knew all the obscure chord voicings necessary to keep him from "occupying" the same range as Jerry and Brent. I swear to God, I can't remember seeing him play below the fourth fret, using open "cowboy" chords, and I have actually heard tapes of him swinging bends off Jerry. Plus he had a lot of charisma, and presence. Jerry made himself visible through his playing, but didn't really give a shit about actually being a "frontman", maybe the leader, yes. Too bad he was almost always too low in the mix. We used to make an effort to sit on Bobby's "side" so we were in the sweet spot. Dead center was all Jerry.
I've forgotten to appreciate the little things about a Grateful Dead show: those minutes in between the time they took the stage and the time the first song started, listening to their noodling and figuring out what they were going to open with by what key they were messing around in. The anticipation was amazing and I miss it.
Much, much love for this show, and the Grateful Dead! They've been one of my greatest guides as I navigate this crazy world we live in. I didn't catch my first show till 95, but I'm just as hooked now as I was then. Long live the Grateful Dead!!
I too was there! Someone had told me that they were filming that day. I had not known it then and now all these years later I get to see this. Thanks to RUclips.
Man, the solo in Ramble on Rose at about the 29 minute mark is just perfection. It's more than wonderfully melodic, it feels like a journey. As a life long guitarist, I put Jerry at the top. Above Hendrix, Clapton... all of them. Not just technical skill, but his sense of melody infuses everything. Nothing, and no one, can compare. While he is certainly well regarded amongst guitarists, I don't feel he is given his proper due. Rest in music, fat man. I sure you miss you.
Yep. It's the ability to capture melody so well and fluidly, where it's memorable. It's not just with the lead guitar parts, but all over the songs, obviously, as well. Most people have no idea what a gift that is. Plenty of guitar players can develop chops, rehearse a lot, play fast solos, some of them certainly great in their own right, but melody and feel is where it's at. Even when Garcia makes an error, it sounds great. Sign of a genius.
I agree. He was a musical genius. The guitar is like a natural appendage in his hands. It's like how us normal mortals just naturally open a door. To someone like myself without guitar skills it's like he just thinks the notes and his hands magically follow without missing a string or fret. Whenever he comes to mind I'm saddened that he left us so early, but glad that in a relatively short life he left such an amazing musical legacy.
My very first grateful Dead concert the tickets were given to me and my best friend Chris bartolomeo from his stepdad George Daugherty I believe thank you everybody for putting me on 32 shows with Jerry God bless the grateful Dead
That was a great show!!!! I’m so happy that I was going to see shows in the late 80’s early 90’s!!!! They were tight! Jerry and Brent were absolutely vibrating and Bobby was on point! Everyone in the band was just on their game!!!!!
Not often do I hear a board with Bobbys guitar out in front of the mix .... the guy was a genius of layering his chords into Jerrys leads ... this is refreshing and a great show to boot.
I like that you can actually hear Bobby in this mix, and his tone is actually really good! Not tinny at all. Bouncy, airy, vibrant. Phil laying down the bottom end with that casual magnificence like a guiding. And yeah, you can Jerry is very much "on" here, enjoying himself, engaged, and ripping happily throughout.
They certainly did an excellent job of recording the audio and also video recording was excellent..Terrific job..and the Band was grooving the whole show...they have said in interviews how much they love playing in Philly..and Philly loved them coming to play!! GBTGD✌☠🎶

There's nothing quite like a Philadelphia Dead show. LET IT SHINE...and leave it on!
Lots of fun at The Spectrum...JFK too, but I LOVED The Spectrum.
Turn it on and Leave it on.
I couldn’t agree more.
I was there with my beloved husband Mitch. Mitch passed away in 1984 and I have missed him and thought of him every day since. Still love you baby xo

No, you weren't. This show is from 89. Unless you forgot or mistyped the year of your husband's death. My condolences either way.
@kengodwin3879 bro, bring it down a notch. "No, you weren't" like you know wtf she was or wtf she was doing. Lady is living vicariously through this show that reminds her of a loved ones passing and you're over here all "no, you weren't" like anyone gives af. We're just chilling with her story.

Scrolling down through comments and had to do a double take then go and check when I saw this. You keep coming up as people I may know on FB, we've got 2 mutual friends. I don't want to put their full names up here, but Mike Pink and Steve Lang. Weird, small world.

this show is pure fire - one of the best shows of 1989, and that's saying alot.

Box of Rain literally brought tears to my eyes for so many reasons.
Whew! 😜

Buy u a book on Jerry Garcia's life, there is plenty on E-Bay - his books have kept me "sane" during this crazy world going on lately, try it.... My books are getting worn out by carrying them around, like a baby - waiting on him to grow legs - he he
I can't smell him, can't even take his glasses off - and make holes in my book; but I can feel the "love' coming from the book - try it people - it works for me - may work for you, if you love .

I feel like you doooooooo!
I agree with most of what you said. I want to mention that Kansas is still going strong and Styx is fun to hear every so often.

I'm so glad this whole show is finally on youtube, best show of the late Brent era imo
I was there, after hitchhiking up from DC and getting a face-value ticket about 10 minutes after arriving ... one of the best shows I ever saw.
Seeing Jerry enjoying this gig so much is truly heart warming. You want to think he was digging these moments and not just haunted by his probs.

They were clicking on all cylinders this Summer Tour. Summer ‘89 though Spring ‘90 was one heckuva run. Losing Brent was such a blow.
rm1133 It was brutal
So brutal 😥
Man.. losing Brent was really the beginning of the end.
They were on! You can actually here Bobby's guitar too! Yay! 🔥⚡

The quality of this is amazing...looks/sounds fantastic!!
Super underrated! Thank you mister Garcia for sharing your brilliance!. It was magic. I miss the shows.
This is one of those shows that I just have to watch every now and then. One of my favorites.
Hell in a Bucket I like his parts on that. Unusual but just right.
The Grateful Dead is the spiritual fountain of youth.....
Thanks for posting. This is the Grateful Dead at their Best!

I miss Jerry Garcia's face, music+his amazing ❤️ he shared with all fans!I I know I'll see him in heaven I wish he knew how life was so much better, just by him being in it!!!

(And rest in peace, brilliant beautiful souls 💙Robert Hunter and Brent Mydland💙- you gave us SO MUCH)
One of my favorites. It's also a show to be heard, with good vibes and evident musicianship.
Wow! This tops "de whole ting" on fire, ending at "Heavens Door". The beauty and "real" love of Grateful Dead/fans just makes me feel well, glad to have partaken in several shows over twenty years. Thanks for posting this happy gem, bringin US back. Feel the love, spread the "real" love! We all need it, now America! "Turn on your love light and leave it on!"
Amen to That..
"Real" Love to all...

I just found it! A great way to begin the week!
I was hear as well, I love watching shows I was at. I was there in 87 too, the day it was like the surface of the sun!
It's great seeing the looks that Jerry gives when he's checking to see if everyone is ready to start.
This is the show that changed my entire world… and wrote my future in lyrics with musical accompaniment.. that will never be duplicated nor comprised. My heart is pure and true ⚡️❤️⚡️
