  • summer dead at alpine valley '89. Jerry and the band in one of their greatest string of late shows. This phenomenal, rare pro footage was shot for the making of "Downhill from Here"-- this track however did surprisingly not make the final cut onto the resulting dvd.

No one mentions Bob Weir's incredible, haunting slide playing on this tune. Dude is so underrated as a compliment to Garcia's melodic genius. Such a wonderful pair on guitar, and this is a badass rendition of one of my favorite Jerry sung GD songs. NFA!

Was staying near Alpine Valley at the summer home of my wife's family. Older son was four, younger boy just a few months old. And my sweet wife surprised me for my birthday, handing me a ticket for this concert. She stayed home with the kids, and I caught perhaps the best Dead concert of the 20 or so times I saw them beginning in 1971. My wife and I met at a Dead concert freshman year of college. What a wonderful evening, weather and music perfect.

It's one perfect song, in each note and word, a kind of unity/convergence/communion. Whenever Jerry's on, he's the totally humble servant the music, to the muse; he just disappears down the rabbit whole and takes the band and us with him. First saw the band in 72; regret that I didn't see them more (just 2 more times). I've spend more time in the past 6 months listening to their studio and (mostly) live recordings than I did in the previous 40 years, and it's been bringing those big goofy smiles to my face---yeah...they WERE kind, they still are, and their music is just as precious now as it was then.

I named my cat for this song... I put the lyric "Movin' with a pinch of grace" on her tag before I discovered what a klutz she is. XD
Only heard it once in concert (Buckeye Lake '94) but it's always been a favorite, all stately and sinuous and sensual. The absolute, unbridled joy that went up my spine when I heard that opening riff was a genuine life experience I will always treasure.

A local alt weekly gave GTH a tepid review, and singled out Althea as "a lot of pointless noodling". For the longest time I thought I was the only one who loved this song. Jerry is one of those very rare guitar players who I recognize after just a coupla notes. I can recognize his guitar as easily as his voice. Carlos Santana and Keith Richards are guitarists I quickly recognize..but not so much the voice. Althea is a great song; it reminds me of Cold Rain and Snow. I love the line "...and now I'm trying to catch her." Jerry died in 1995 but he truly does live on.

Attended all three shows in AV rained every night. Helicoptered to the shows and back with the band and my friend Bill W. Choppers were grounded on the 3rd night due to poor visibility and bad weather. Drove back to Lake Geneva in vans. Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed a few weeks later on the same helicopter ride in poor conditions. God Bless SRV

I love how the notes Bobby plays after the mishap with the lyrics “friends are getting most concerned” sound exactly like “uh-oh”. Gotta love that!

definitely one of my favorite Jerry up front songs, in all its versions, quite possibly my favorite. I never thought that Bobby's cheezy, rubbery slide ever added anything to the song's magnificence

Recently, when I listen to the Dead, I get increasingly impressed with Phil Lesh's contrapuntal bass. He was always unfavorably compared to Jack Casady, who Phil admitted was one of his models. But in my view, he wins the competition (if indeed there was one) on subtlety.

Phil was the perfect bassist for that band: cerebral, open-minded, well-versed. Casady was the master of tone.

I read your comment and thought, 'gee I wonder what that looked like?' Then I scrolled back up at the video and much to my surprise it was at 8:15 and then BOOM! Nice call by you and good timing by me, the Dead, the Universe and the song.

Heck ya buddy this is prob my all time favorite Dead song. I actually really like the later stuff.

I often have felt that this was my favorite Dead song too, but its so hard to pin it down to just one. It certainly would be in any of my top 5 or top 10 for sure 100% . And I am with you as far as the later stuff, I think right about here they really hit a peak.
Strange, now that I am relistening to it while responding to you, it occurs to me that somewhere I do have a juicy Alpine Valley boot on cassette tape, and it just might have this very Althea. I guess I will have to look thru the boxes of tapes later, Cheers!
