Without a doubt there is excess number of resources in technology areas in almost every company. I personally know at least in 3 to 4 large companies where significant percentage of software engineers/data engineers/middle management have not more 10 hrs. of work in a week.
There is a huge difference between a programmer and software engineers. Those who are advanced degree holders know how to build software architecture and frameworks versus writing simple programs to do something. Optimised, scalable, fast software architecture is still game for software engineers.
But at the end of the day industry experience teaches more than advanced degrees. I don’t totally agree with CBS on advanced degrees losing value but some truth to it for sure
