Graduated in December 2023 and your video has given me more hope and motivation to just keep going. I have been lazily job searching since graduation as I have not had confidence that I can pass interviews and have been in this never ending cycle of "Im not ready yet so do not start mass applying yet." Just now these past 2 weeks have I been actually putting my foot down and grinding leetcode and applying. Thanks for the extra motivation to just keep going :')
so glad i could help a bit with it, and really hope things worked out!!! it’s a tough time, and it sometimes feels as if you can never prepare enough! but interviewing is a skill in itself, so def keep going for it! wishing you the best!
I'm a recent grad who just finished a post grad internship. I'm silently panicking at the fact I've basically been graduated for 5 months and don't have anything lined up. Class of 2024 truly graduated into one of the worst job markets lmfao.
can u tell me about like what kind of things you show to the employer i know you need a resume but as for github do you need to like participate in some kind of open source project or like just post your school assignments and in your resume just put everything you did during your internship like contributions. I am a Cs student who have 2 more years till graduate and i just want to know earlier cuz i have a lot of free time and i think a lot lol just want to get this out of the way.
i'm nowhere near qualified enough to be giving recruitment process advice, but i'm here to share my experience! i hope this resonates and helps even one person know that they're not alone in this. it's a freaking terrible process! anyway! here are some of the resources that helped me along the way. feel free to add some of yours :)) oh and for anyone curious - I DID NOT LAND ANY FAANG LEVEL JOBS LOL. i'm too dumb for that! so take my advice with a grain of salt hehe Some helpful resources during my recruitment process: - The Github New Grad Repo which lists a bunch of new grad SWE/Quant/PM roles (I'm linking the 2024 one) github.com/ReaVNaiL/New-Grad-2024 - The Grace Hopper Celebration which is the largest women in tech conference. If you're a student, your school will most likely fund your trip! ghc.anitab.org/ - CodePath which is a non-profit organization that teaches FREE courses to current university students. I took their advanced technical interview prep one! There's also a career fair in October that matches you with potential employers. This is one of the best resources I used!!! www.codepath.org/ - Leetcode which is a bank of coding questions similar to those asked during your technical interviews. leetcode.com/ - Neetcode which provides some structure and amazing explanations for your Leetcode journey. This was very helpful!! neetcode.io/ - Don't be afraid to cold message/email recruiters! Really put yourself out there - you never know what could happen! - And, this is gonna sound cheesy, but don't forget to believe in yourself. You're smart, and you're good at what you do. Never forget that - even when the process is absolutely terrible! p.s. if you saw that i put the wrong year at the end, no you didn’t🙈
@@Bingxiaohuang Hi! I just came across your channel. I am from the UK. About to graduate in 2 months and had been applying for jobs for around 10 months. And got rejection after rejection. Applying for probably over 1000 jobs and finally got a job this Friday. Super stoked to start working. But it still doesn't feel real, like I don't want to stop searching in case something goes bad. glad it worked out for you. and hopefully lots of others people here. don't give up!
This is inspiration right here I know someone who graduated for UX/UI and it took her almost a year to land a position. It can be tough but one thing I learned from you and others is to push through and expect everything not to happen right away and always stay prepared and persistent. I’m still on my self thought journey at the moment and I’m putting in a lot of work 🔥
I've been looking for a job in SWE and/or data science since November 2023, and still haven't found anything. The market sucks and I've only gotten about 5 interviews over the last year. I have 4 internships including my senior capstone, so I know it's not that I'm not qualified, it's the market being so oversaturated. Watching this video gave me some hope in finding a job, I might even document my own experience similar to this video once I get a job. Thanks Steph, and good luck to those in a similar position!
SUPER happy how things played out for you! I also graduated 2023 and I related to so much of the struggles and thoughts you had during my process as well (the feeling of life on pause hit hard). After a loong process, I landed my first job in March. Congratulations and enjoy your new monitor! I also wish good luck to everyone that in the job search currently!
this nearly made me cry, i am a freshman in my bach of cs and this gave me hope that i will be successful one day as long as i put in the work. i am so happy for you and so so excited for your future!!!
This video is so so so inspirational to me because not too long ago i tried to shift from one discipline to another entirely (i didnt work out entirely as i didnt get all the subjects i needed but i got my major right), even though education system here is wrecked high key and things didnt go as planned i am really glad i was able to take the first big step like you :)
@@stephranaway really appreciated your gesture mate :) I talked with senior teachers and they said they can help me in chaging the subjects if they get a chnace, I will try my best to convince then and do someone either way I am really glad I was able to get the major I wanted :)
I am so glad you landed a job at the end. For those in a similar situation of doing a late shift of fields, know that it may be harder to get the job in the new field but keep at it. Also one bit of advice in preparing for a coding interview: in addition to leetcode, do mock interviews with someone. I only discovered this once I was interviewing folks at one of my jobs. Once you are the one giving hints, you get a better idea of what the interviewer is looking for. You get used to coding on the whiteboard and how to manage the time. Hope this is useful to someone.
I'm super happy for you, that ending is such a relief! SWE is a tough field to get in to and those feelings of failure when you can't find a job are only exacerbated by people saying how easy it is to get a job in tech when really, they're saying it to sell a course. What I can say is that once your foot is in the door, it gets exponentially easier and with a mindset like yours there's no way you'll be anything but successful.
I think this is really fun watching your journey. I am much older now but I can feel your frustration and pain. You deserve your curve monitor for all the grind. :) Congrats on your new job.
Steph, you are truly an inspiration. Genuinely happy to see how the efforts you made paid back, and congrats on landing the new job! Switching the path to a totally new realm takes so much courage. And while you might feel like you're behind - you're not! You just have a unique background and you never know how things you've learned in the past can come in your favor someday. Keep pushing and all the best wishes to you!
Congratulations.....for your achievement. The roller coaster you've been riding for the past couple of months....I felt in just 13 minutes. But anyway, I'm happy for you....keep the grind!!
Currently in this phase, looking for a role in machine learning. So happy for you. I'll try documenting my journey too on my phone. Hopefully, I stay positive all through :)
i literally just went through the same thing! i graduated with my B.S. in SWE in May and literally just got a job. i spammed applications too (about 800 🤪) and kept it all in a spreadsheet. it's super helpful because you can go back and figure out which job the company that finally got back to you is contacting you about when you apply to so many. also, i had a rule for myself that i had to apply to at least 10 every week day. this helped because i was always staying up to date with the most recent job postings and i could also see all the work i had put in in my long excel sheet when i was feeling discouraged. and even though i had a previous internship under my belt and applied to so many, i would say i only got around 5-7 companies that actually wanted to interview me. not to mention on TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS i was told i got the job technically but that they no longer needed the position 🙃 just know that whoever may be in a similar situation - it feels impossible but youll get there! the job market is awful rn in the tech industry and it could take many months, but keep applying and youll get one and know that it's not because of you
@@eat.sleep.study.cry.repeat2461 yeah you will get a job! i know saying that doesnt really help because people would always say that to me and it just annoyed me 😂 but i promise you will :) i know another person who it took 6-7 months to get a job in SWE so it's not your fault you dont have a job, it's the market

Congrats on finding a job! I'm a junior software engineer at an MNC with a mechanical engineering degree. I know, it's not CS because I don't need one👀. I didn't know Leet code existed until after getting the job 😅. Just wanted to let you know that there's a lot more SWE roles outside of the app/web stuff and they pay really well! Some examples are: semicon machine OEMs (eg TEL, Besi,ASML), Embedded systems/controllers (eg FPGA, firmware, sensors), Networking (eg DDS, intel), RTOS related (eg QNX, VXworks, controls). The SWE role exist before big tech and before the internet. Big tech has its ups and downs but there's always demand outside of big tech. I think app/web job market is brutal right now but the industries that I mentioned are actively hiring as they do not have enough SWE.
Thanks Gurl for all those links!!!! I'm a second yr tech student and I can't explain the horror I'm going thru.... I literally can relate to that desperately wanting to move to the next chapter of life. Well done you did great!

Just went through this myself and I made it to the coveted tech side, don't give up. There are plenty of us along with other's who are more qualified that have been laid off. I have had an internship every year in college along with most of them being extended, well past their supposed end dates practically working at a FTE and it simply did not matter. Gotta be right place right time and have the skills when the time comes for it. Make sure to do LC to ensure that you don't get as nervous when solving complex problems. Study system design or whatever skills you put on your resume. Also make sure to apply early. I put all of my eggs into one basket and it fell through for me big time.. so even if you have a position secured or that you think it is. Apply to another position anyway and get the job you deserve!!
omg just finished watching the entire college life video you posted five months ago, as an incoming-transfer student to UChicago sophomore class, it just feels so cool and I hope I can also figure something interesting out in the next three years of college
I really love your positivity and energy through the hard times. Keep it up and spread your energy to others, especially CS students, we all somehow go through times like this.
The only technical assessment that I got was to make a chat system in just 4 hrs. It include the front-end, back-end, validations, and lastly a mysql test! :) Hope u have a job now... :)
If it makes anyone feel better I had a job lined up that was fully remote. I have my reasons and I don’t regret leaving. Definitely feels stressful not to find a job off the bat when you know you are 100% qualified for the role. Good luck to everyone! It’s tough out there but you got this!!
aww, i was rooting for you in the whole video, i'm so happy this had a happy ending! congrats even though I'm watching this 3 months later! Hey, I came from bio too. Only that I liked bio, I stuck with it mixing it with computation and during the hard times, I decided to switch to my software engineer identity. Funnily enough, apparently interviewers thought my story was interesting and thus I got interviews.

I am in the same boat. It’s really depressing times.
so glad i could help a bit with it, and really hope things worked out!!! it’s a tough time, and it sometimes feels as if you can never prepare enough! but interviewing is a skill in itself, so def keep going for it! wishing you the best!
I'm a recent grad who just finished a post grad internship. I'm silently panicking at the fact I've basically been graduated for 5 months and don't have anything lined up. Class of 2024 truly graduated into one of the worst job markets lmfao.
any update on finding work?
@@misu.b I signed with a pretty large tech firm (fortune 100). in a role i dont particularly like, but its the only one i got.
Thank you so much for updating us. Hearing these success stories really gives me hope, even if it's not the exact job you wanted :)
@@christinanguyen9753 absolutely, no problem. keep your head up and keep applying, best of luck.
can u tell me about like what kind of things you show to the employer i know you need a resume but as for github do you need to like participate in some kind of open source project or like just post your school assignments and in your resume just put everything you did during your internship like contributions. I am a Cs student who have 2 more years till graduate and i just want to know earlier cuz i have a lot of free time and i think a lot lol just want to get this out of the way.
I love how unfiltered, and genuine your content is. Kudos to you, well done 👏
ahh thanks so much, appreciate your support!!!
Thank you for sharing this
i'm nowhere near qualified enough to be giving recruitment process advice, but i'm here to share my experience! i hope this resonates and helps even one person know that they're not alone in this. it's a freaking terrible process! anyway! here are some of the resources that helped me along the way. feel free to add some of yours :))
oh and for anyone curious - I DID NOT LAND ANY FAANG LEVEL JOBS LOL. i'm too dumb for that! so take my advice with a grain of salt hehe
Some helpful resources during my recruitment process:
- The Github New Grad Repo which lists a bunch of new grad SWE/Quant/PM roles (I'm linking the 2024 one) github.com/ReaVNaiL/New-Grad-2024
- The Grace Hopper Celebration which is the largest women in tech conference. If you're a student, your school will most likely fund your trip! ghc.anitab.org/
- CodePath which is a non-profit organization that teaches FREE courses to current university students. I took their advanced technical interview prep one! There's also a career fair in October that matches you with potential employers. This is one of the best resources I used!!! www.codepath.org/
- Leetcode which is a bank of coding questions similar to those asked during your technical interviews. leetcode.com/
- Neetcode which provides some structure and amazing explanations for your Leetcode journey. This was very helpful!! neetcode.io/
- Don't be afraid to cold message/email recruiters!
Thanks for the tips and advice 😁
Not landing a faang level job doesn’t make you dumb!!!
But it still doesn't feel real, like I don't want to stop searching in case something goes bad. glad it worked out for you. and hopefully lots of others people here. don't give up!
we got this girl ! we can do it! I'm currently posting here and there whether it's SWE/QA/DevOps....

The job market is absolutely brutal rn, but don't give up and practice, practice, and practice.
no fr, practicing for technical interviews is so important!
I think they also meant practice building projects (web apps, mobile apps, CLI tools, anything you can think of)
This is inspiration right here
I know someone who graduated for UX/UI and it took her almost a year to land a position. It can be tough but one thing I learned from you and others is to push through and expect everything not to happen right away and always stay prepared and persistent. I’m still on my self thought journey at the moment and I’m putting in a lot of work 🔥
how many applications did you send out before landing a job?
Its so impressive how you perserved and kept going. Thank you for documenting your journey!
What programming language do you use?
Behind but still at it. Shows there’s never a late. Just a want and strive. You got this! We’re rooting for you! ❤
Nice! I am still in school! Can't wait until my first day.
this nearly made me cry, i am a freshman in my bach of cs and this gave me hope that i will be successful one day as long as i put in the work. i am so happy for you and so so excited for your future!!!
This video is so so so inspirational to me because not too long ago i tried to shift from one discipline to another entirely (i didnt work out entirely as i didnt get all the subjects i needed but i got my major right), even though education system here is wrecked high key and things didnt go as planned i am really glad i was able to take the first big step like you :)
proud of you for taking the first step! i promise everything will work out :) keep on going!!!💞
@@stephranaway really appreciated your gesture mate :)
I talked with senior teachers and they said they can help me in chaging the subjects if they get a chnace, I will try my best to convince then and do someone either way I am really glad I was able to get the major I wanted :)
Thank you for documenting your job search journey!! It is really encouraging to see how positive you were throughout the entire process!
The curved monitor looks soooo cool indeed! Hope can see you share more of your working experience in later videos
it’s my favorite thing in the world😭 thank u!! will be sharing more soon :)
Sooo happy for you! Job hunt is always tough as a new grad. Once you're in the industry things get simpler.
Lead SWE here - a massive well done! Perseverance is the game, it's a lot more difficult with current market too, but you made it!
I think this is really fun watching your journey. I am much older now but I can feel your frustration and pain. You deserve your curve monitor for all the grind. :) Congrats on your new job.
aw thank you so much!!:)
But anyway, I'm happy for you....keep the grind!!
thank u, you're so kind! it's definitely been a crazy time. appreciate your support!:))
why are you spamming the "..."
@@yipyiphooray339 what do you mean?
Currently in this phase, looking for a role in machine learning. So happy for you.
I'll try documenting my journey too on my phone. Hopefully, I stay positive all through :)
This is the cutest and realest video I've ever seen! So proud of you for getting through it all and landing a job!!
i literally just went through the same thing! i graduated with my B.S. in SWE in May and literally just got a job. i spammed applications too (about 800 🤪) and kept it all in a spreadsheet. it's super helpful because you can go back and figure out which job the company that finally got back to you is contacting you about when you apply to so many. also, i had a rule for myself that i had to apply to at least 10 every week day. this helped because i was always staying up to date with the most recent job postings and i could also see all the work i had put in in my long excel sheet when i was feeling discouraged. and even though i had a previous internship under my belt and applied to so many, i would say i only got around 5-7 companies that actually wanted to interview me. not to mention on TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS i was told i got the job technically but that they no longer needed the position 🙃 just know that whoever may be in a similar situation - it feels impossible but youll get there! the job market is awful rn in the tech industry and it could take many months, but keep applying and youll get one and know that it's not because of you
Wow thanks for this comment. It feels so hard at the moment so thanks for the hope
@@eat.sleep.study.cry.repeat2461 yeah you will get a job! i know saying that doesnt really help because people would always say that to me and it just annoyed me 😂 but i promise you will :) i know another person who it took 6-7 months to get a job in SWE so it's not your fault you dont have a job, it's the market
thank you for sharing this!!! and wow that’s amazing🤩 i’m so glad your hard work paid off! 800 is wild😭
wishing you the best!💛
@@eat.sleep.study.cry.repeat2461 I’m in the same situation. I graduated with my B.S. in SWE in June 2024, and I haven’t found a job 💔. I would really appreciate it if you could share what I should do and send me that spreadsheet. Also, if you could give me advice on how to improve my skills, I’d be very grateful. I’m feeling pretty lost. Thanks in advance! 🙏
hey steph! As a new grad who also documented the job search in my videos, I resonate with this (I am also in tech as a PM). 6 months was rough, but it taught me so much. Also it was so crazy bc I got my job at the end of the year too
glad we made it out the other side😤 congrats on finding the job!!!:)
This was an amazing video congrats on your first job and thank you for being honest and documenting this, it really is brutal out there in the it industry but it gives hope to anyone that if you can do it anybody can if they push themselves hard enough :)
So happy for you, made me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one going through this job search phase XD
you're not alone in this!! it's such a tough time omg, but you got this!!!
Congrats. That's a huuuge achievement. And kudos to you for not giving in even when burnout was knocking at your door!
thank u :)) burnout was kicking my ass lol. appreciate your support!!
I can definitely imagine the sheer joy when you got that job offer and the long-coveted curved monitor! I'm currently in the boat as you were looking for internships. Hope I can someday come back here with some good news
Me not even out of high-school yet, but I feel for you😭. I don’t have it hard at all because I haven’t started applying to jobs yet, seeing you grind makes everything feel worth it. I’ve had similar feelings like feeling behind. The way you format this video makes it feel like I’m listening to a long-time friend sharing their ups and downs after being busy for so long.
aw this is so sweet😭😭😭 i promise you’re not behind (if anything you’re way ahead!!) it’s super cool that you’re thinking about these things already. wishing the best in your studies, and keep us posted on how things go!💞
Felt as if I'm watching myself. I just graduated and have no offer as of now, but I'm gonna grind to my fullest and going to keep an optimistic mindset. Ik things will work out in the end! I hope everyone who is in a similar situation doesn't lose hope and just keep moving forward.
I'm learning English and your videos help me sm as your voice is really clear and pleasant to listen to.
Hi Steph, I just want to say I am in the same grind and hunt for jobs as you were... seeing you overcome it has really given me energy to push myself more harder. Thank you so much for sharing this with us and I am really really glad from whole of my heart that u got to where u wanted! still a way big more things to come for you!!
Hey guys I am back again, the universe has been very grateful and God has blessed me with a job that one can only imagine. Wish me luck I will be starting from this Monday that is 16th of Dec 2024
this gave me so much hope, im in the exact spot you were with switching my career focus towards software towards the end of college. im so glad to see this!!
I've been out of college since 2019. I entered a position that wasn't particularly what I wanted, but I decided to stick with it to see what experience I could gain. Now almost 5 years later, I've decided to get into a role that is frontend and backend dev focused and I'm finding it hard to find a job. You've given me inspiration to keep grinding. Thanks! Nice monitor btw :)
Hi thank you so much for this video. I can relate to this in a super personal level, and seeing you got the job makes me inspired to do so!! I graduated Jan/2024 in Brazil but i have been looking for a job since September/2023. It's been a hard grind and I've found myself worthless a lot of times. Hopefully I will get a proposal soon! I'm so happy you got it.
huge respect for you and thank you for putting that vid up. I am currently in the same spot you've been and I really needed that kind of real raw story of someone going thru similar stuff.tysm!
this was so inspiring, in my senior year, also currently freaking out!! i followed these steps with you!!
Love your Journey, wishing the best to all those still trying to get into industry!!!!
Hey Steph, I'm watching you from Brazil. I'm a bachelor in Computer Engineering, and I just started to look for a internship/job. Just wanted to tell you that I appreciated your video. Congrats! Enjoy that much as possible! Go further! You're an inspiration!
hi kauan! thanks so much for your support - it means a lot! good luck with the rest of university and the job hunt, you got this!! :)

don't give up!!!! you can do it! keep on grinding and you'll get there i promise. burnout is tough, but so are you😤 it took forever for me, and i reaaaally wanted to quit and had the worst self doubt i've ever experienced, but just keep on going. keep me posted on how things go :)

Wow Steph . Congratulations 🎉. You did it . I have seen very few passionate girls in tech especially as a software engineer, you are one of them . Glad I found your channel. All the best and lots of love from India 🇮🇳❣️
I was in biology before switching to computer science, and trust me, you can be successful too! Keep pushing forward, and you'll find your place in the tech world! Best of luck.✨🎊
Literally this is the type of motivation I need to hear! Thanks for keeping a log of the process even though I know some days you literally want to give up on recording the process and just give up in general. But it really means a lot for you to have even posted it to show that it’s normal to go through such struggle before you finally get to the top
Thank you this was a really informative comment I actually had to come back the next day to look at save this! Appreciate you sharing some knowledge
Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🌷
You've got this!
Lots of love from Berlin!!

It takes so much strength to show this much honesty and vulnerability, massive respect to you for that
You definitely deserve all the success you have worked so hard to achieve.
thank u jordy, appreciate you being here!🤩
Thanks Gurl for all those links!!!! I'm a second yr tech student and I can't explain the horror I'm going thru.... I literally can relate to that desperately wanting to move to the next chapter of life. Well done you did great!
aw you're so sweet - that felt like a big pat on the pack. appreciate you :)) and ugh i feel u, it's such a scary feeling. but you're doing amazing, and you still have time so just keep grinding and i'm sure things will work out! good luck with everything - and lmk how it goes!!
Apply to another position anyway and get the job you deserve!!
all amazing advice. thank you for this!!!💛
This was so replenishing to watch!!!!
❤❤❤
omg just finished watching the entire college life video you posted five months ago, as an incoming-transfer student to UChicago sophomore class, it just feels so cool and I hope I can also figure something interesting out in the next three years of college
