U2 is the band of my life. When I need time to forget this hard and complicated life, they give me strength, hope, joy, and above all, the desire to continue living, fighting and never giving up. I love you
Sonia Bw Ditto
This is so true 💯
Their music transcends time and is very deep.
Started listening as a child, and Im now 47, and forever a fan. Amazing stuff!
desiiiiier desieeer desire
Edge’s mushroom story is what keeps bringing me back to this interview
MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
All the Best!
Gary Lagstrom
My Dad and Bono's Dad worked together as amateur musicians and I have Bono's autograph. I saw U2 around growing up in the 80''s in Dublin. We left them alone in the pub, and even got served before them at the bar! 💚
can you share what instrument did bonos dad play?
I'm amazed at how Bono is still so hard on himself. It's inspiring to see someone with a bar set so high for himself. Goes for the entire band, just Bono is very vocal about it.
He doesn't think he did good on "Do They Know it's Christmas?" and Edge doesn't think their Live Aid performance was their best.
his singing is far better now than it was in 1987. I agree with him - that he finally does the song more justice.

So true about "Bullet..." Adam's playing during the guitar solo is a f**king masterpiece !
Not to be a pedant but if I remember correctly he plays the same thing verse chorus and solo...right?
@@mbrew3244 He does, the bass part literally never changes the whole song... I think it's a great part and somehow it being the same the whole song works, but I don't understand saying it is a "f'ing masterpiece" lol. The Edge's solo there is what I'd describe as that.
@@winterlogical maybe that's just it. Maybe that's the genius
Best interview i've heard in a long time. I could listen to these guys all day. They're oozing creativity, and the landscapes and pictures they paint with their words and tone is beautiful. Shame we didn't hear more from Adam and Larry because they are equal to Bono and Edge. I hope the legacy of U2 lasts forever
George McCauley I
George McCauley I feel the same
George McCauley your searching for negative thoughts in this , not everyone speaks at the table that doesent mean they re any less welcome at the table
Adam Guitar if you had bothered to read my comment correctly you would have seen that it is full of positivity.
I agree I would love them to release a feature-length documentary about the Joshua Tree,
I loved From The Sky Down, the Achtung Baby Doc. They are awesome live, looking forward to their next album.
Bono criticizing his mullet 😔, I'm convinced the brilliance of the Unforgettable Fire came from his mullet.
"The secrets of the universe were that close!"
Do you know around what time Edge talks bout doing the shrooms? Thank you!
Nick Grimm 16:00
Scott Smith 15:50, i was laughing the whole time
Thank you you're the best!
With Or Without You is my all time favorite U2 song, the one that really started my journey with U2. But I think I’m one of the very few that absolutely love ❤️ Red Hill Mining Town! I love watching Bono sing that song.
I remember hearing it for the first time after having been consuming the previous material to that date, pride and bad were ring in my ears for years....I’m staring at my bedroom wall hearing that drum machine and sequenced keyboard thinking, “this is so weird” ....then the bass came in. From that point on all that track did was build, and build and stop....and then only start to build. The created denial. Live versions take you where the album refused to go after that where love will tears us apart....again.
I love every MINUTE of this. The boys in a candid conversation......id watch a 3 hour movie of this.
me too!
More like Bono giving a soliloquy 98% of the time.
Bono’s comments on the lyric for where the streets have no name really interest me. There’s a scene in from the sky down in which Bono says that you can’t be intellectually proud when writing/‘receiving’ a lyric and implies that you sometimes get a lyric that’s apparently beneath your best work-or at least simpler than your mind’s highest pretensions. It’s not just Bono. In Bridge Over Troubled Water, Paul Simon also wondered if he was writing too simply or below his capacity with lines like, “when you’re weary / feeling small”... yet there’s this perfection of a a divine comfort speaking directly to the soul.
Some writer’s feel that what requires too much labour and revision probably isn’t worth keeping. Others think rewriting is really what it’s all about. Then there’s this other thing that happens and you take it down as it comes... and sometimes it’s very direct and simple and comprehensible. It doesn’t advertise your capacities or depreciate them. It’s something else. It fascinates me.
Timeline?
Well-said.
Loved the nod to the Unforgettable Fire ("sister" album to Joshua Tree) here. For some reason, it's my favorite U2 album. Bono criticizing his lyrics in Streets - wow.
Justin Sims couldn't agree with you more
On the deluxe version bono sings for help from tHe Holy Ghost.
It's my favorite as well.
Yeh it's an amazing album.
Unforgettable Fire is my favorite as well. It has a presence as a whole that none of their other albums have had. I adore their new stuff as their old, and my favorite song isn't even on UF, but UF is cohesive and immersive in a way none of their others seems to have.
One of the greatest albums of all-time from one the greatest bands of all-time 💯
Wish Adam and Larry would talk more. Adam especially is probably the most eloquent of the lot.
kps88 same
kps88 adam is a fascinating character. Always what he says has some kind of spiritual meaning 😎
Adam is the man!
Adam is a special figure!
"There are some people who say you shouldn't mix politics and music, sports and politics. Well... I think that's kinda bullshit"
Next to the sound of my mother's voice, With or Without You would be the last thing I'd like to hear before I fly to the pearly gates. I can listen to it in repeat, and often do. It's been a magic carpet to serenity most of my life.
There’s so many.
Still haven’t found
Bad
Sort of homecoming.
Heartland
What can you compare with U2?
They keep cranking out anthems and ballads which are still relevant today.
If you are listening to there music, why not? And then what are you listening to.
ONE. Brillant til this day.
Give it a listen. Then critic it, album like, Vertigo, No Linee on the Horizon. Then Then The Unforgettable Fire.....
These a ground breaking albums.
Can anyone ever watch a U2 interview and not just love The Edge?
nope
It's a metaphysical impossibility. ;)
My musical hero
Can anyone NOT love the edge?
Bink Hinkle amen to that and I am an atheist
This band's music is what got me through High School I would have whatever day I had, then go home, sit in my room after dinner and listen to "Unforgettable Fire". I had/have the album, but I went through about 3 Cassette Tapes listening to it over and over. It is not one person, the 4 of them make the music, you cannot have one without the other, and I also include any band members that they have for studio albums. Years later I have realized how much they spoke about faith in their music, I love that so much. I still cannot add them to a playlist, if I am listening to U2, that is the only music I will listen to, nothing else.
Thank you, all of you, for putting out such incredible music.
A loyal fan, Stephanie McCreight
I didn't get U2 when I was young. Now they blow my mind and heart wide open 😊😎✌️
These guys are the greatest band in our history.
No, they are number 457 on that list….the last 7 albums are trash
most informative U2 interview ever, so thanks, you should do more, Achtung Baby next....
The interviewer did really well here.........He's so well informed (and you have to be when you're sitting down with Bono) He really got the band talking and found out loads of stuff many of us didn't know ! Great
Best band ever!!!
I remember how empowered they made me feel on that day they played that song during Live Aid..I was so happy being a long time fan, that the world finally saw what I had felt love as a fan of U2.
Possibly the best U2 interview I've ever watched. (I'm from Dublin, not a HUGE U2 fan but I respect them and the music. 'Angel Of Harlem' is a bit of genius on every level. There are other songs of theirs which delight and excite me. They get a lot of 'flak' in Ireland because of a certain national characteristic that distrusts/resents the very successful. Those people should get over themselves. U2 as artists have moved and even re-defined live performance in the way that David Bowie did. Their idea has always been to explore, push and experiment. It's funny to see them 'just chatting' in an intimate interview setting. As ordinary as they are extraordinary. Really nice, talented and honest people. xx SF
BEAUTIFUL JOSHUA TREE
I always loved "Running to Stand Still" so much
U2 has gotten me through hard times. Not to say how much they have inspired me.
As a teenager I bought The Joshua Tree when it was released. At the time it blew me away & it still does now. It was a fine balance of playing air guitar & ensuring the needle didn’t jump on the record player. Thank you Bono, The Edge, Adam & Larry. As we say in Australia.....this one goes straight to the pool room.
What I find so interesting with them is that they managed to stay friends all these years later (especially Bono and Edge who were friends before being in a band together). I think the fact they split things 5 ways (20% to their manager) helped a lot since so many bands break up over money. Really though, Bono could have asked for more since he wrote all the lyrics and was made the face of the band (he's an extrovert in a band of introverts so it was inevitable) but the fact everyone recognized that the band is better than the sum of it's parts is what kept them tomorrow.
Joshua Tree was life changing! Love it! and these guys seem so normal.
Brilliant. I'm sorry to every "punk rocker" who doesn't get it, but U2 is amazing.
Myb I’m a strange punk rocker, but I love u2
U2 was punk for a few albums
U2 has very emotional music that's what drew me to em in my early teens - War changed my life
I love the eye rolls from Adam and Edge when he says "you're a shy guy" about Bono.
Being a bass player for 40 plus years with Adam Clayton being my icon for all those years, like they have always say when ask when do you feel your ready with a song? It is when you are so prepared and played it so many times that you couldn't play it wrong if you wanted to! Now you're ready for tour!!!
Favorite Band of all time! So much sound from 4 musicians! Seen them live 6 times.☮💜😎
I absolutely love how Bono repeats We,We’re,We are …….. Most frontmen or lyricists etc always come across I…… Me Myself My band my songs When egos start to mutate that’s when the band implodes too much wealth bravado will cost you dearly ….U2 are like a family unit a band of brothers no ones bigger than anyone else they get criticised for being liberated, political, philanthropists yet 45 years have passed now and despite their status they still act like humble kids with their roots hearts and soul focused on their art.
That’s why they have incredible longevity.
giggling uncontrollably at bono's little dylan impression. what a wonderful interview!
DAMN. After of this interview I love Where the streets have no names even more
The Best U2 Interview Ive Ever Seen , I Think The Band Opened Up With Zane Lowe Because He Is A Genuine Fan and They Seem Comfortable In His Company . So Laid Back Yet So Informative Superb
Yes, it's great to hear an interview from a well-spoken fan.
1. Don't capitalize every fricking word.
2. He was horrible. He talked way too much and didn't ask Larry or Adam one question.
Edge seems very taken with him in the beginning...then he starts pouring drinks.
Best interviewer of any band ever!
Love how edge takes a drink after Bono says Streets isn't finished to him. Also nice how Bono is looking his age finally
theplourde I was laughing at that moment quite a bit.😂👍
he's done a lot to that hair though. it was already thinning during the Zooropa Tour. not like The Edge, but noticable
If we have a whip round we can get him some botox, yeah?
My view is that HEAVEN is where the streets have no name only made of GOLD
Brilliant!! Just brilliant!
They should do a 30th anniversary of Achtung Baby tour, they should reprise the ZooTV tour setup
Ehhhh I'm not sure about that. I mean I'd love ZooTV 2.0 but I don't want U2 to bank on being a nostalgia act.
Imagine them playing that entire album would be gold just pure GOLD
this can only be done once. it would mean doing a parody of a parody
word.
Take My Money
Man I would cut my hands off to be able to sit down and hang out with this band.
9:45-12:45 They talk about Where The Streets Have No Name, really cool part of the interview for someone who loves the song
A friend of mine worked at windmill lane and borrowed one of the vans to move to his new flat. It was on the night of the listening party for the completed Joshua tree album. Only they couldn't listen because the master was sitting in a box in the borrowed van ha ha. Colm O Reilly. Miss you brother.
Larry & Adam should have been featured more here. It's a missed opportunity for sure to ignore them for a majority of the interview.
I agree. I felt the interviewer talked too much rather than asking and stepping out of the way.
Met these guys once, a lifetime ago. Blue light is just up the road from me. I love that Bono is so self critical. That what keeps him going and fresh. Would love to have a drink and chat at that table. Hopefully I’ll get to meet them again sometime. Great to hear these stories! 👍
I can't even imagine my life without that album! I once had a boyfriend who told me he had a dream of me on stage with Bono singing I still haven't found what I'm looking for, I think it even made him kind of jealous. Lots of people tell me, "every time I hear a U2 song I think of you Jeanna!" And im like yeah you better!!🤪 yeah I can't even imagine my life without Joshua Tree!
My favorite album ever.
@@69Mucci me 2!
U2 put incredible love and good intentions into every moment of its art. The music keeps giving me more, as I start to catch up to it. It’ll always be ahead of me. Bono demanding more of himself is critically important.
I probably misunderstood Bono, but the way he sang the A-side of the album was unreachable, extraordinary. In particular, I think of Running to stand still. There are amazing versions from the past.
It's the B-side songs, as we're listening to them in these lucky days, the finally revealed masterpieces. EXIT above all: please never ever drop it in the future.
Well said. And I think "Mothers of the Disappeared" shall be the saddest and most emotional song of the album.
I could do without the songs Running to stand still,Exit,Mothers of the disapeared,One tree hill,Red hill mining town and replace them with all the b sides.
Yeah they should've put Love Comes Tumbling on the official tracklist for the unforgettable fire.
I love / hate, “he said he was an artist, but he really painted billboards”. I get it, it’s a sketch from a period of working with Robbie Robertson.
Larry Mullen was my first crush ♥️
Larry's look after Edge said metaphysical experiment. Priceless
5 years ago , wow, time does fly
This tour was excellent.
I'm hoping that the next tour showcases
Boy and Achtung Baby.
If they announced that pair of albums as the showcase in 2020/2021,
I think I'd pass out for about a year.
This is a really good interview. I saw the Joshua Tree tour in Croke Park in '87 and '17.
Great! Such grounded guys. The Joshua Tree is as good today as when I first heard it!!
I saw U2 in Kansas City for The Joshua Tree tour first time around and it was one of my favorite memories in my life. The Bodeans opened up .
Amazing interview! Love it! They just keep getting better and better with time! U2 forever!
Great interview. Saw them in San Diego last month. Sounded absolutely amazing, like time stood still. Love you all!
Best interview in a long time!
What a great interview.
Bono's Bob Dylan impression - EPIC
Amazing interview, greetings from Chile!!,long live u2
Amazing four irish guys..... i L O V E them so much❤️❤️❤️❤️
Such a joy to see them live
Seriously, Adam and Larry need to stop hogging the camera and talking time.
1 of thee greatest group of all time!!!✝️🙏🏼❤️🎶🎶🎶
What a wonderful interview💪👊👍
Bono is so humble. Truthfully, his range is incredible, he also has such power in his voice. He can sing high notes in an open voice that would be deep into most male singers falsetto, and he never needed to be double tracked on a recording to get the power.
For me, the mark of a great singer is they dont need to double their vocals on the record. The emotion and subtlety of their voice comes through much more clearly, the sound is more organic. You just have to be a great singer to get away with it. Bono is.
I like Larry Mullen's analogy of contrast in styles that: "with 'Actung Baby', we chopped down 'Joshua Tree.'" Spot on.
& replanted it for this tour..
Truly great. Amazing artist, we should have more talks like this.
I feel so blessed and inspired when I get to listen to real people. These men are so humble and seem so kind. In this malinial society we have going on today, I truly hope young people who I see sometimes around could just stop and be grateful for the little things....the gift of a song in my mind is so precious to me because it allows me to dream and transcend me to a life I continue to try and make better for my family and friends. I hope one day I get to meet these amazing men to say thank you for keeping me dreaming and hopeful for better life for my son, and sister 🌸🙏
Wow. Amazing interview
Albums like Joshua tree will always be rediscovered forever so few present such an artisticly royal offering
Well I missed this Gem great interview I have been living under a rock.
Excellent interview. Always nice to hear the band members speak their minds.
Probably one of the best interviews ever the guy came loaded and his knowledge attention and his ability to connect with the band brings out a humble and genuine side of one of the biggest bands in the world he might as well be a buddy or a family member shooting the breeze with the lads hats of to the the man best interview
I would love hearing a round table interview like this about Achtung Baby, I have a feeling they'll do a similar tour with AB, another masterpiece, it's interesting how hard Bono is on himself as a lyricist and singer, great interviews
They wont do it again. They did this tour because of how relevant the record became again, not just the anniversary. U2 don't usually like to look back.
We can always dream
then watch from sky down.
Fantastic interview. EP&A has always been my favorite track, ever.
"we need new dreams tonight" ,,,, so very much true,,,, that has stuck with me. What an amazing interview,,,,absolutely loved every minute of it.
What a delight to listen to the stories and insights to their world. They have moved and touched millions with their music,,, we should be for ever gratefull. I love these guys,,,,
I really enjoyed this and wish it was twice as long.Joshua Tree is definitely one of my favorites.
Best interview with U2 I've ever seen.....
Outstanding
Very very good interview!!
Love these guys. Their music has applied some wonderful brush strokes to my perspective of this world.
Just 4 good solid human beings.
I was raised in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia - the Bible Belt.
My Mom was “different” people came to our home for her to “lay hands” but I was not allowed to speak about these things outside of the family.
My Mom states “What people don’t understand scares them. When people are scared they behave badly.”
Truth
beautiful
Great interview
Amazing
These are four REALLY cool guys!!
what a fantastic interview ..... he did such a great job!!!! Soooooo impressed with this interview I actually looked up this band .... WOW they are kinda good tooo.
Going to the concert tomorrow night in Suncorp Brisbane...so pumped!!!
I saw the Detroit date with Beck opening and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Though I had back and neck problems for two days (standing on the floor four rows back from the B stage) after and was just slightly deafened from “Bullet the Blue Sky” it was so much fun.
Also, Larry smiled in this video and my mind is blown.
It's refreshing to see an interviewer who makes knowledgeable remarks. And the image quality is outstanding. I feel like I'm sitting at that table with them.
Being comfortable with being uncomfortable with the unknown, is key.
Where the streets have no name
Is there best song ever.
Amazing interview. Thank You
I love that Bono calls the Edge, “the Edge”.
