The John Edgington?
David Gilmour always comes across as a gentleman with class and dignity. It pervades his music.
He made sure that Syd got all the royalty checks for when he was with Pink Floyd.....
The music industry is a cut throat business; it was good to hear that Gilmour stood up for Syd when Syd couldn't.
He's definitely one of the underestimated guitars of all time he's a great guitarist and a great music producer and he's never got up the credit that he deserved you got that right he's always been a gentleman class he's definitely less Act
@@christopheryoung383 I'm not criticising you but David Gilmour is in most people that have ever learnt the guitar's top 3, and most people that haven't top 3, in no way is David Gilmour underestimated. If you wanna talk underestimated you should check out Mark Knopfler or Peter Green, the number one and two of most underestimated guitarists in history.
How originally said for the 2 millionth time !! People can't say anything else other than what's been said a million times over 5000 years
Was he involved in some of Kate Bush early music.
I just love how respectful the interviewer is. Lets David speak without interrupting. What a fantastic interview!
Thanks so much for your kind words!!
In other words he didn’t learn how to interview from Howard Stern. If he had he would ask questions like: You really dislike Roger Waters don’t you? So Roger Waters was like dictator, you really hated working with him didn’t you? So you & Roger Waters used to get into fisticuffs quite often, how many times did you have to kick his ass? But you are so much better a guitarist than Syd Barrett, didn’t get you get angry when he was tripping on acid & you literally were carrying the band? But while Mr. Gilmour tried to answer Howard would bombard him with another idiotic question before he could even try to refute.
Unfortunately, we can't hear his voice as he asks the questions. His mic is too low in the mix.
I hope Howard Stern is watching/taking notes..
@@pasqualeporpora are you deaf??
Humility, simplicity, calm, no pedantry, no arrogance, just an artist talking about his life, his work, David Gilmour, a beautiful person who created beautiful music.
I just love Dave Gilmour. He is such a giant in the music business. His talent for shaping the music to stand on its own ‘before adding the weight of lyrics’ is legendary! I am and always will be a Pink Floyd fan! Thanks for a fantastic interview.
My pleasure !
David is my favorite musician. No one can play the guitar like he can.
Thank you for sharing. For me, David Gilmour is Pink Floyd. Part of my youth as for so many people. The Netherlands.
Same here. United States of America.
David Gilmour is what it looks like to be a rock star who has matured with grace and dignity.
im guessing he'd much rather be a musician who has matured with grace & dignity..
Seems like Waters is always on the attack...with everything - music, polotics, etc. He even contadicts himself, regularly. He's got some sort of grandiose mental-disorder. Very arrogant, and falsely self-assured.
@@Gorilla.Guitar 🤣
David is hands down my favorite guitar player. Lots of really amazing guitarist in the world, but David's playing gets my soul
I cannot believe that I actually watched the whole way through this interview and it kept me interested the whole time. It is the laid-back atmosphere, coupled with intelligent questions and (usually) leaving David time to answer that kept me on board. Future historians will be glad of this short goldmine of an interview. Thank you.
He’s very humble. He is one of the greatest guitarists. His guitar solos sound like they are breathing. When I was young, I thought he was using an effect. But it’s really his incredible playing style.
Amazing singer, too. The smoothness of his vocals mixed with Water’s neurotic, screaming vocals worked so well. The combo was brilliant.
This conversation got me deeply emotional… David is such an honest profound character ❤
The only thing i can truly say without doubt is Dave Gilmour is my HERO, as a musician with a guitar you are amazing
20 years later and I’m just discovering this gem of an interview. Thanks for sharing John!
Unlike any other guitarist, David’s playing seems to carry the same emotions as any lyric, pure genius!
John, I'm a massive Pink Floyd and Genesis fan and I've really enjoyed your unedited interviews with the various band members. I want to thank you for uploading them, especially when you have to deal with a thousand completely stupid comments about the video quality, the ads, or deranged rants about how member X was the true genius of band Y and after member X left Band Y was never the same etc.
Hi Zach. Thanks ! Your absolutely correct about the absurdity of some comments but I’m happy to say that the many positive ones far outweigh the negatives!
These unedited interviews are brilliant John. Great job. It's nice to see the natural flow of q&a with David. 👍
Thanks so much !
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES I read in the comments about taking down one of your videos due to audio video quality?
I think you should leave them up as some of us are interested in your filming process as well as the actual content.
It's not often that we get to see the making of this type of documentary film.
It's an education in itself.
I vote you keep them up. 👍
No worries. I’m keeping them all up. The only one I took down was a previous poor audio version of this Gilmour interview
Thank you so much for posting the full interview. I've had the DVD of 'The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story' since it came out, and the longer interviews on the extras of that are fascinating, so this is even more fascinating. You've done a service to music history, John.
Thanks so much Matt!
53:23 The part where he talks about Syd nailing the guitar solo on 'Dominoes' after flipping the tape over to record to the backwards music is just a diamond in this interview, thank you both John & David for sharing this!
I was born in 78, and to me these interviews with the band are a gospel on how the musical craft should be approached. Pink Floyd is an example of hard work and they are one of my strongest musical influences. Thank you for this incredible work.
Thanks so much for your appreciation!
Awesome I love your reply. As I've said it's really nice to see the younger people acknowledging what sadly has rather faded into the past. "They" just don't do it like that anymore. But I'm glad they did. And we can still talk about it and listen to it now.
Thanks for posting the interview! Much appreciated!
My pleasure!
I respect David Gilmore for his humble ways. The stardom didn't change who he really is and you can tell he misses his crew.....
Wonderful interview, this one is special, David has much love for Syd ❤
As a massive Syd fan, thanks for making these interviews available, I've been going through them since I first saw one at some point in the Summer last year, and it's been such a joy to have all of this great material available. Thanks again.
Thank you for your appreciation. Great to read such feedback!
A guitar god. An English gentleman. And one righteous dude. Who has such gravitas and such a serene calming voice of patience and wisdom. We Love Dave Gilmour the human being . Rock Legend
Could listen for hours and days when David is talking 🤘
I loved this interview SOOO much!!! Thank you for sharing, mister! PF and SB must be fairly documented for rock history because they earned it and they deserve it as a band.
Glad you enjoyed it!
David's way of puuting the whole Syd's situation is just so subtle and honest at the same time. Hands down for him 🙌 ❤
David has such a calming nature. I wish I could be more like that. He seems very at peace and grounded. I think it must be something of that generation. I honestly don’t meet anyone like that nowadays
I think it comes with age
Such a beautiful and genuine person in addition, an AWESOME musician.
Thank GOD for him! ❤❤❤
Regardless of some of the previous negative comments, I really enjoyed this interview. I think it's a fascinating insight into the personality and genius of Syd from the perspective of someone who obviously admired him and the guilt he felt for replacing him. It made me revisit Syd's albums which I hadn't heard for years. Always been a huge fan of Pink Floyd and I wish there was more appreciation of how lucky we are to be able to access material like this. I know I am biased as Gilmour was a huge influence for me when I was starting out, but to get such an in depth and honest reflection from someone who's music has touched millions, is something we shouldn't take for granted. In short, huge thanks for making and sharing this material.
Great to read your insights. Thanks so much for posting this!
I love when Dave plays wish you were here, that he looks away to not have the interviewer throw off his groove.
How tasteful his finger picked rendition is.. very soulful and heartfelt.
After all those questions you’d rather not answer, but decide to anyways, and show your quiet vulnerability.
Especially when he looks the interviewer in the eye at the end of the pattern of wish you were here. The interviewer misssed the fact that Dave opened himself up to him, and he missed it. That’s a very vulnerable place to put yourself in the context of getting to know someone and opening your heart up for those to see. If the interviewer didn’t see that I sure as hell did.
Thank you for that Dave.
That was beautiful!
Makes sense. I went back to that part of the video and watched his finger picking of Wish you were here. David Gilmour is really something!
Fantastic interview and thank you so much for posting John. I love David's expressions and emotions, he was quite the gentleman and was very patient. Wonderful feel through the whole interview. Superb job.
Thanks Craig. Much appreciated !

And imagine going to one of those 5 gigs with both David and Sid together, wonderful
Mr. Gilmour speaks as articulated as he plays guitar. Brilliant! :)
Pink Floyd in Pompeii was simply the best.
It was magical!
Thanks for this excellent interview. Despite its length it was never boring. You seemed to have good chemistry with David.
My pleasure. Glad you appreciated it
David's a class act. Love that dude and always will.
Having watched both the Richard Wright and Roger Waters interviews on Syd, this one seems the most genuine. And the most emotional.
What a gentle Soul. Thank you for uploading, Sir. 💜
All of these interviews are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. I became really fascinated by Barrett's music back when I was around 19-20 years old in 2014 or 2015. Back then I recall there not being that much information available online about him at all. Lately I've been returning to his albums and the early Floyd stuff, and my interest in him has been rekindled. It's been a joy going through these interviews now, since I discovered your channel a few days ago. I am yet to see your documentary but I hope to purchase it in the next week or two.

Thanks so much Alex. It really makes me very happy to get reactions like yours!
David's lucid mental state obviously extends into his style of guitar playing - nothing but praise for this man...
John, these interviews are pure gold. I watched all of the Genesis ones, and now this... Amazing!
Thanks so much!
I've been watching this interviews since you posted them, they're amazing, and i love how honest and open they are. You're really easy to talk and hear. You're amazing man, thanks for doing this
Wow, thank you!

Hey there ! Thanks so much for your support ! Much appreciated!
Much respect for David Gilmour's humble massive contributions to music 🎶 🎵 👏
Nice interview man, manners, simple, informative, educational, and the interviewer doesn't interrupt him at all. good job!
Thanks so much !
There's something painful about this interview. I know David agreed to do it but it's odd to ask a person to fixate about the brilliance of the person you replaced.
Syd wanted him to replace him at the time he hated the spotlight and it made him sm mentally worse
One of the main reasons I picked up music 15 years ago, love david and all the Pink Floyd guys. I'm seeing Nick Mason and his band next month 👍👌
A man of immense talent to many, who with the benefit of age and experience downplays it all to just simply happenings. 🙏🏻
Not too long ago someone posted a video of Syd’s paintings, there were a lot and really beautiful. Glad he was able to express himself in other ways after he left the Floyd and find some semblance of peace
You should take down the other video with the bad audio and picture. I stumbled across this better version before watching the other one.
This interview is superb. So long, so patient. I've watched some of your Genesis ones as well, and in those, you also capture a certain depth that is rare in an interview. Please post anything else you might have. Any from the band Yes?
Gilmour is so articulate, intelligent, and reflective. He is willing to talk about anything... until you hit The Wall.....then he shuts down. That period is clearly so painful for him.
I love that he keeps the Comfortably Numb guitar permanently tuned for that song. He is as big a fan as we are, and he feels the emotion of the best Floyd songs the same way the audience does.
Let's hope Dave can mount one more tour for us. His shows have so much emotion and heart. And this interview shows why.
Thanks Scott for your very appreciative comments! I have thought about your suggestion to take down the other video and I will be doing that in the next day or two.; Just posted this info on it so people watching it now hopefully switch to this better quailty one.
I HAVE JUST UPLOADED A BETTER QUALITY SOUND/PICTURE VERSION OF THIS INTERVIEW HERE

@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES Leave it up as is. 👍 Authenticity is everything.
Pink Floyd would have never became what they did without Dave , they would not have made it playing that psychedelic type stuff from the syd era, Dave had the perfect blend of that psychedelic and traditional blue based stuff
David is a big inspiration on my guitar playing/style. Thank you David.
Such a pleasure to see and hear David Gilmour.
A guitar genius and the great voice of Floyd. Call my self extremely lucky to have seen them live in 1994, and i can still remember the great day me and pal had in london. Was an awesome experience i still cherish today. And still got the T shirt i bought there
I've seen the Wall with Roger. But as a self proclaimed guitarist, to Feel every bend Gilmour makes, I couldn't have a life changing moment without him a few hundred feet in front of me, scratching my brain on how lucky I am that he stayed in some shanty hotel room to play for me and my standers round for what he was a genius of making. I would easily say out of all the shows I've seen, a Gimlour show would be at the top. Bar none. I hope to get that chance, but who knows.
Who here agrees that "Wish you were here" is the best album Pink Floyd ever created? I think it is the most cohesive concept album ever made, it expands and contracts throughout the whole thing like the whole album is breathing emotionally. I like Dark Side a lot but Wish you were here is on another level.
Gotta say DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, but I love your passion :)
Yeah you’re right. Wish You Were Here sucks you in for the whole album. Dark Side has some jarring discontinuity at times.
I’ll still listen to Animals, too, but the Wall is garbage to me
My favorite is Animals, and i know it is not a popular opinion, but it makes such a statement on life for me.
My favorite of the incredible run of 5… Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH, Animals and The Wall is Animals. Animals is truly a concept album, each song part of the plot dissecting society and mankind, where the darkness of our existence is disseminated in sound and words throughout long journeys. It’s overlooked because it had no singles so it was not popular in the mainstream since the songs were long. Wish You Were Here would be my second followed by Dark Side. All 5 are perfect albums.
I think that "Wish" is the best Pink Floyd had to offer as David says in the interview. I think after "Wish", the rest of the band slowly transitioned to being session musicians for Roger culminating in "The Final Cut" where this was actual truth. This is not an insult to anyone involved. I think fame and fortune affected them all differently, with Roger, perhaps, being the only one to really retain the creative drive to keep moving forward. I've heard in numerous Gilmour interviews that he credits Roger with keeping the band focused when the others didn't always necessarily have the energy and drive to do so.
I love how Gilmour being so patient answering all the questions. His honesty about sid and also with such respect and awe. Two greats that Kept pink floyed going and flourishing ✨️
Gilmour's guitar-work took Pink Floyd straight out of the scrap-heap.
Nope, it was Waters' songwriting and lyrics. But no disrespect to Gilmour as a guitarist, that would be absurd.
This is an amazing discussion and interview. Very insightful and honest.
very relaxing and chill interview. I loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Really enjoyed this interview, I’ve only recently pulled my turntable out of storage after 20 years, l feel the need, now to find wish you was here which is in a box of vinyl somewhere, and get it spinning. David Gilmore is a great guitarist, absolutely love watching and listening to him play.
I'm 61 now and was not taken by pinkfloyd till later on . When I started taking interest I found pinkfloyd pleasingly unusual . They looked unusual. Then there was the unsubstantiated stories about syd Barrett almost mysterious, then the final disintegration of the band , I followed in the years to come . This interview was very revealing and captured dave Gilmore's character in a natural way 👌
Gary Bowl, glad you now like Gilmour.
We, collectively, need more interviews that are conducted like this. Calm, thoughtful, intelligent, informative, enjoyable, and soothing.
As I get older I gain all the more respect for those who modulate the tenor and timbre of their voices to make it pleasing for the listener.
Young people...learn from this example. Good style never goes out of fashion.

W O W ! ! ! Once in the mid '80's I went to a job interview and one of the questions on a questionnaire that was handed out was, what person do you admire most in the world and my answer was David Gilmour. I seriously doubt if the guy even knew who he was and now, thanks to you John, I feel like I've actually met David Gilmour. He seems like a really nice, down to earth guy and so humble about his brilliant gifts but wouldn't hesitate to tell you if you bugged him. At the end when he was talking about Shine on You Crazy Diamond, that's exactly how it happens. You're just fooling around and you strike a certain chord or a particular note and something just clicks, it's magical. And this was a magical 1hr.40mins. Thank you so much.🥰😍💖🖖
My absolute pleasure! Thanks for expressing your appreciation.
Thank you, David Gilmore. For creating the Pink Floyd. For the vision. And the journey. From the days. To the recent days. And a finished version. Of Pink Floyd. Truly, we'll be heard from the deepest blue to the darkest side of the moon.🖖👍🤝🤲😇
Very intelligent person and of course great guitar player
I grew up listening to old war stories, and this interview feels that way to me. I love it! Mr. Gilmour telling you how it was. I'm so glad this exists.
Thanks for your appreciation!
I have all the documentaries on dvd, so I have seen snippets of interviews like this one, the Roger stuff, or the one with Bob Close... but never the whole thing like this.

David seems so much more at peace or happier when he is holding that guitar. Lovely interview. He's really sad about Syd, It is very sad. Great interview.
Great interview on so many levels. Thanks for uploading this and for doing such a great interview.
Thanks. My pleasure!
Great interview, and interesting to compare this to the interview made in Paris in his younger days. As I’m now 69 I can understand the complete contrast in the two. As you get older, common sense and reflection become more sensitive and sensible……hopefully! As seems the case with Gilmour.
As ABBA would say, thank you for the music, David.
Looking forward to this one John. 👍🏻
For me, the key remarks regarding Syd begin at 34:19. I’ve studied Syd most of my life. Seen, read listened to everything available. He was just one of those small percentage of people that shouldn’t have gotten deeply into the psychedelic experience. Certainly, Jerry Garcia took more, as did many others. As Syd came into his 20’s, the mental illness or just his incredibly original mind, began to run him from the reality rails. The shear brilliance and talent manifested anyway, but as the structure around him disappeared and the band moved on, he was stranded. It’s a tragic story, but he never embarrassed himself. He didn’t die from and OD. He found a way to live and eventually to paint and be content. David is largely responsible for Syd having made the solo albums and for making sure his songs got releases over the years, so Syd had money to live a quiet life. David is a good man…. And, I’m certain that at the Galactic center, where the cream of art is collected from all life forms in our galaxy, David’s solos are well known!
I think this interview need to be around 4 hours… and that won’t prob be enough
Not nearly enough!
For those who didn't read the video description, the title of this video should be : *_DAVID GILMOUR TALKS ABOUT SYD BARRETT FOR 1hr24 min_*
And so?
Heard all sorts of stories over the years about Syd Barrett. It was refreshing to hear it come from someone who knew about it first hand, David Gilmore no less. I noticed his body language changed considerably when the subject matter veers into territory involving RW. I guess that's a wound that'll never heal. DGs in the top three of favorite guitarists for me. Mind you, there's a handful tied for both second and third places respectfully.
Likewise. He's always in my top 3, although the other people, that take the other two spots for me, change from time to time but he's always there. Phenomenal guitar player.
His voice is just unbelievable beautiful.
I shouldn't mention looks on a serious video but Dave Gilmour was absolutely beautiful as a young man.
He's still very dishy.
Oh and yes, he's also a brilliant musician.
Mention his looks! I agree he was literally beautiful when younger and is still a very good looking man.
You're gay, right?
Gilmore not only beautiful but one of the best guitarist of the century. Will always be remembered.
I completely agree. I'm a 70 yr old woman, but THIS guy still stirs my soul. He was beautiful as a kid and is still gorgeous. LOVE to listen to him play. My real regret is I never got to see him in concert.....
He's alive and kicking ;)))
Hé is so handsomr at Any ave I love his voice in fact I love everything from David ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
John, amazing interview with Mr. Gilmour! I read in a book about Floyd and Mr. Barret that Syd was the band's creator and that he was extremely artistic, and a touch spaced out. I had no idea that he suffered from mental disorders. David and the band had to do what they had to do to keep the band alive. I must have been rough for the band not include syd in their new direction. I have been a Floyd fan since I heard their music back in the 70's. David has a cool house with his musical instrument collection. Great job!
Thanks so much for your appreciation!!
It must be hard for people who didn’t grow-up in the sixties and seventies to understand the complete lack of understanding of mental illness and addiction. One only has to read/watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to get a sense of it. Listen to Dave’s story, near the end, of their trip to St. Tropez, and you can see that they were KIDS who grew up in the fifties and sixties-a generation ahead (or behind)-in their own understanding of these things. How is it possible that people expect they could have done “something more” for SB? That’s like asking a five year old “Well, when you saw your dad was having trouble breathing, why didn’t you just perform a field-tracheotomy. There’s a Bic pen right there? WELL!?!? 😳🥺😖. For crying out loud-quit flogging this horse!

I loved Dave’s drums and bass playing on Barrett. It is a stellar album and he had a big part in making it so. He’s an excellent drummer. I believe he played drums on Fat Old Sun and The Narrow Way. I don’t think anyone has ever created a guitar based piece that is more psychedelic than the Narrow Way. Absolutely brilliant piece that had a lot of jaws dropping back in the day.
FYI Jerry Shirley of the band Humble Pie played the drums on Barrett
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES Yes, you’re right. I thought Dave played on a track or two. But yeah, Jerry’s drumming on that record along with Dave’s bass playing and Rick’s keyboards really elevated Syd’s pieces.
@@soarornor David did however play drums on Dominoes. In my interview with Jerry Shirley (coming soon!) he says it’s the one Barrett track he loves best and the only one he didn’t play on!
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES Yup, I remember. I think he added some guitar to that as well. I’ve always been mystified as to how the two Syd albums are compared with Barret getting the short end. I love them both and I think Barrett has a bit more of a finished sound. I love Rick’s harmonium on it too.
Wow...as soon as I thought I knew it all, I find that some of the beginning to "Shine on" was played with wine glasses. Great stuff.
They had an entire album planned called "Household Objects", which was a sort of experimental thing where they produced music using only common objects found in most households. That's where the beginning to Shine On was born, with wine glasses. Roger went ahead and made an album called "Music From the Body" in 1970.
Truly marvellous interview, Gilmour never seems to grasp the brilliance he was, and will play second fiddle, his absolute love for the lost talent of Syd is so apparent
Thanks so much for your thoughts !
David Gilmour is such a cool dude. he seems like he’s achieved some kind of state of nirvana.
I just love Dave, what a classy guy. It must have been such an awkward, uncomfortable situation coming in to the band. Before everything else, Dave and Syd were friends, quite close friends at one point. My wife had an uncle who also fried his brain with acid. From what I hear, he was a bright, witty, charming individual before. I saw him a couple times before he passed, he was just not "there", like he could barely function. Could not even hold a conversation, just piped in with random phrases here and there. Just weird and uncomfortable to be around. So sad how absolutely damaged some were afterwards.
Such an incredibly talented guitarist, also appears to be a really nice guy, well spoken and articulated.
I am so touched and impressed by David Gilmore and his musical legacy. Love the pace of this interview. However it comes through as a Syd Barrett-interview rather than a David Gilmore one.
Undoubtedly Barrett is/was well worth his portion of attention. But in this case I’d rather know more about David Gilmore’s view on music, life et cetera.
Having said this; thank you for a great interview in a wonderful (gentle) format! 🎙️🎸
FYI The interview was in 2001 for my Syd Barrett documentary
