Staying in the theme of playing faster, here's a snip on the concept of the OODA Loop! Hope I've explained this well enough so that you can apply it to your own play

Where does movement speed fall under bpm... cuz I know that is aspect of playing but not easy to quantify

i don't know how you do it but you keep uploading videos about the exact problems i'm having at the perfect time actually so clutch

If I’m going to be honest, when I first your channel I was quick to dismiss you as another one of those channels who aren’t really good. After being able to actually listen, I really think how you describe and explain what someone should be doing and comparing it to how they should be playing is so good.

This decision making technique is doing wonders for my Super Smash Bros. for Ultimate gameplan! As a competitive player your analysis has always helped me the most and I learn so much on how to play my character on tournaments in the Netherlands. Ramses you are the best coach out there with the best theory concepts information smash coaching

Yooo, I also play Rocket League and Smash Ultimate! Pretty cool, two of my favorite games for sure.

My guy really placed hybris in a coaching sesh sheesh
Impressed by your demonstration of the theory which appeared as very relevant to me and the choice of words you used.

Okay, so I really like this idea. But i do have one problem. And that problems is that the order of the steps, Observe, Orient, Decide, Act seems to imply that DECISIONS are made in the exact moment that they need to be executed.
Now, I don't know the context (you mentioned military) in which this process was developed, and so maybe the order (namely, "decisions" coming 3rd) makes more sense in that context. For example if you're scouting or something in the military and you have a bit more time to make decisions based on situations that don't change in matter of milliseconds idk.
In smash, I would argue that decisions should typically be made BEFORE you even find yourself in a given situation. Now, "Before" could mean many things. It could mean when you're watching your replays a week before your next tournament, ("okay, i see im doing XY and Z against Lucina at ledge, AB and C look like better options I'll do those instead NEXT TIME") or it could mean in the middle of a match after you notice a habit of your opponent ("okay, this is the second time he rolled from the ledge, NEXT TIME i'll position myself accordingly and punish with forward smash").
But the other part of this is being able to take those first two steps (observe and orient) and do them immediately. Which also requires practice and experience. Ultimately, I don't think smash is a game of quick conscious (key word here) decisions that are made in the moment, I think it's a game of quick recognition of situations, and rehearsed (whether habitual or prepared) responses to those situations.
That's not to say that you are wrong about anything, in fact iirc you mentioned in the video something about this process being used when reflecting on games or something to that effect, which I agree with. This is just how I made sense of it.
Edit: would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this!

Honestly, I feel like you could either make the decision before or after the observing stage. But naturally, people do Observe and Orient first. I agree that a lot of decisions are subconscious, but at top-level play I’d argue that the majority of decisions are conscious.
I think you have a lot of interesting ideas tho. I rlly liked reading ur comment

Hey! First of all, thanks for the comment. It's very well thought out and I appreciate another perspective.
This process does not need to be completed consciously every single time. It is just a way to dissect the steps that go into a decision. You cannot decide on an action if you have not reacted to the current situation. Sometimes, you act based on a prediction. For example, you see that someone is about to grab the ledge, so you position for a ledgetrap. This is still observing the situation and based on the orientation of your options, you decide and act. In this same situation you could decide to chase if given enough time to, or you could decide to 2 frame. All of these are options that you should orient on before deciding. That, again, does not have to be a conscious process, but through conscious practice your subconscious gets more adept at orienting quickly and accurately.
I hope this adequately informs on some of the gaps that this video did not include. If you have further questions, I invite you to join my Discord (link in the video description). I'm very active and am very willing to discuss this :)
      Have a nice day!

@@RamsesEsports yeah I think we are totally on the same page. I figured you didn't think that this was something that you did every si gle interaction in a game... (there can be hundreds of interactions in one game, itd be impossible). But i was curious to hear about it from your perspective. I'm not amazing at smash and I dont coach anyone like you, but I find a lot of joy in thinking about this game philosophically(?) for lack of a better word.
Also I'd love to join your discord! Thanks for the invite!

@@williamcodd3347 no, i think youre on to something there actually. Decisions can be made after the observe stage, again using my example of watching your VODs and then deciding there to take a different option next time. Afterwards (ideally) you'd practice that situation many times, (in training mode, then in friendlies etc.) So that, one day, in real match, you'd be able to orient yourself as quickly as possible without actually having to conciously make that decision. Idk... lol. That's how what you were saying fits into my philosophy maybe you meant something completely different 😅
