- Fonts have a powerful effect to make us feel and think in different ways that many people may not be aware of. Can using certain fonts be a "brain-hack" of sorts?

Fun fact: I used to think it is called "Disnep" because of the hard to read Y
not alone man
Definitely not alone.
I used to think it was disnip
When I was a young kid I could barely read it at all
Before I thought it was Gisney
Dennis NEEDS to do a techquickie episode.
Ikr
nah, he'll finish too fast
yes
I'd prefer it if i never saw Dennis in a video again.
Power Senpai wow racist
When yous see somebody about to do a presentation with a comic sans powerpoint
"He's gonna fail"
Actually, Steve Jobs used comic sans in his presentation.
The content is the most important.
We once had this project where we had to make a presentation on anything we wanted, and my friend chose to do the Internet. Let's just say Impact and Comic Sans were his most common fonts.
He got a perfect score btw.
I believe he used Tekton.
One time my English teacher gave us a vocabulary list to fill out and he used Comic Sans to type out the vocab words. I finished it and wrote a note at the top saying "Please stop using Comic Sans" and turned it in. He then graded it and I got it back a few days later with another note on it saying my handwriting looked like Comic Sans. From that day on I worked to change the style of my handwriting and now I write like an architect (neat and in all caps).
But did your teacher stop using comic sans?
+Neil Bas I too would like to know this information.
I also would like to hear more
our year 10 and 11 chemistry teacher did everything in comic sans, even our assessment task sheets and all the work given electronically. I kept asking her to change and always groaned too her when she showed something on the projector, but she never did!
+The Valkyrie Oh my god
Helvetica...neutral? Okay.
Meanwhile, "Helvete" is the Scandinavian word for Hell.
When i was a child, i thought Helvetica was some kind of satanistic font.
I am offensive and I find this swiss
Being a Finn, I thought exactly the same thing xD
Our word is "Helvetti".
HELVETTI PERKELE SAATANA JUMALAUTA
juu terve
I'm so proud of this font! *Fly away to the Alps riding a flying San Bernardo and eating chocolate*
Amphibiot perkele vittu
As a graphic designer, this was awesome to see on the channel!
Same!
anyone else who instinctively get ready to close the video when luke says "speaking of"?
Yup
Omg yess
I start to read the comments when the add comes on...
Wouldn't have these videos is people didn't watch the commercials....just sayin....
+Idris Ahmed Lol mee too
I only use Open Sans, all other fonts give me an anxiety attack.
Why? xD
I only like arial even though I can't tell what font is what.
Trebuchet!
if a typeface gives you anxiety you have serious issues to settle, boy.
Even though your channel has tons of other fonts in the banner and thumbnails?
Try out Montserrat. I pair it with open sans when I do Web design. Google fonts has a ton of great pairings you can look up.
We had an entire exam in comic sans
me too, I wrote "why on earth did you use comic sans to write an exam?" underneath it. Also every announcement was set in comic sans at our school
Thats good because it was proven that if you get a harder to read font on an exam you will be reading the questions more throughout and you will score better
K want your school
My legal studies teacher uses Comic Sans for absolutely everything >_>
#RiP
People who don't appreciate Undertale puns have no Sans of humor.
I'm sorry but they talked about comic sans and Papyrus so you can't stop us now...
c:
S4lty They're talking about the actual fonts, not referencing those shitty characters from that shitty game
Doesn't matter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
btw I love your profile picture
Nailed it!
I don't think that works as much as you'd like it to because "sans" means "without" so "have no without of humor"? "Sans humor" would be someone without humor though. It kinda works like that
Wow Luke, get back to the Wan show, you slacker.
10 internet points for you
GUYS this was released while the wan show was going on#thinkaboutit
luke go to wan show dennis can do it himself.
:D
Couple things:
1. The IRS uses Arial, not Helvetica. You can see it in the "e".
2. Sans-serif vs. Serif legibility has been long studied and at best the evidence is inconclusive. Most designers don't take it seriously anymore as simply choosing a clear font with proper sizing, leading and kerning will affect legibility far more than serifs.
3. The Disney logo was designed based on the signature of Walt Disney, for the record.
4. Designers are starting to shy away from the use of Helvetica due in no small part to the fact that it's used almost everywhere (making it hard to stand out with) and the fact that it lacks any and all personality. Humanist sans-serif fonts like Gotham are becoming much more common now as a result.
5. Sans-serif fonts aren't new and have been considered "modern" for the better part of a century. They used to be called "Grotesque" due to their complete lack of ornamentation.
5:37 There IS a font for the like button. These things are called icon fonts and are used in web design because of their ability to group icons together in one file, for faster loading, interchangeability and easier modification.
Thanks for the video, as someone somewhat interested in fonts it gave me some great information.
By the way, I have no idea who Dennis is and found the presenter in this video very good.
Excuse me, but you were talking about typefaces and not fonts.
Luke, you actually did do a video explaining the difference less than 2 months ago!
Thi is my favorite TechQuicke Video so far. The humor was well integrated and you could tell Luke thoroughly enjoyed explaining this commonly overlooked topic. Well done as usual.
The police at my university use Comic Sans on their cars and every time I see it I just get so pissed off at how ugly it looks..
We must see this.
That was a very good and succinct video about, well, graphic design and its importance. Typology is awesome.
Typography is an art form and a science that few have really been able to master.
Illuminating, by word and, more significantly, by image. Well done!
The irs sign at 2:37 is not helvetica. it is very similar but the lower case "e" is wrong
HERE HERE! The ultimate hipster!!!
Yeah, the government uses Arial for everything. It has the slanted caps on the Es like that.
It's only similarity is it's a sans serif font. It's Avenir.
JazGalaxy It's in no way a modified Helvetica, it's very, very different. It's just designed to look similar at small sizes on a screen and to use the same spacing so you can swap the two out and take up the same page space. Lines will be the same length etc. If you want to look at something Microsoft clearly copied then look no further than Segoe and Frutiger. The former is an almost 1:1 carbon copy of the latter. It's so similar that it's actually considered an illegal reproduction and can't be copyrighted or trademarked.
They came to an agreement where Microsoft can still use and distribute it but they have no legal protections for it because of how similar it is.
And the R is wrong
I dedicated 10 hours of my life to studying Wingdings. It's like a foreign language, but now I am fluent which is quite useful in everyday life.
I ate my tooth due to toblerone. I had a wobbly tooth and after snapping a piece off, a quick chew and promptly swallowing it I noticed a taste of iron. I was distraught for days fearing the jagged tooth will cut open my "tum tum".
That was probably the blood coming from your gums as your tooth was ripped from them. Blood tastes like iron. You've never tasted blood?
I was 7...
Blood tastes like iron because it literally has iron in it :)
I'm sure this is generational, but to me, serif typefaces seem more "serious" or "high end".
I'm 31 and I'm still to find any really pleasing sans serif typeface...
+fcouperin Fira sans.
I feel the same for the meme font
+fcouperin Glad that my younger brothers see it! Whatever typeface Buick used in the '60s-'70s still said "important" and traditional typewriter "fonts" still "read" serious business! san serif type faces are OK for "lighter" work though.
Most professors in my university still prefer Times New Roman size 12 double spaced on A4 paper. Yea that specific.
Serifs don't necessarily make texts easier to read on a printed page. The thing is, under the high pressure of the printing press, badly formed letters tend to break. Small letters need to be stabilized by serifs. In traditional printing, you find sans-serifs letters in titles were the letters are big, but the smaller letters of the text are serif-stabilized.
Serifs made it possible to print antiqua. The medieval blackletter font is perfect for physical printing. It was probably developed for that purpose.
1,000,000! To celebrate, Dennis should do a Techquickie episode
RUclips needs to learn to notify me for new videos that I haven't watched not old ones that I've already seen
this tall slender font is a symbol of the companies owner
standing in his community (usually on a box), tight slenderness of the
letters shows how tight times are and not being able to afford a fuller font
to make a bold statement . The cunning copying of the Canuckadoddle Flag colors
is brilliant. well more like colorblind and contemptible.
video pitch: explain memes to the public eye, their presence, community, and culture would be really interesting to hear about because I've had absolutely no luck in getting straight answers regarding the more subtle social qualities behind memes to be more precise, but I imagine a video on the topic staying a bit more general
Handel Gothic Flipfont is my favorite font on my phone. It's so sleek and beautiful.
Now, the next lead-on is the use of colo(u)rs and what part they play in the "psychology of" ... Good work and keep it up
This is the THIRD unrelated instance of Toblerone in a WEEK - when I normally never hear it mentioned by anyone, ever.
My favorite font is Bembo.
Yes, I have a favorite font.
I don't know why, but it's the easiest for me to read.
I discovered my love of it when I was reading a trade paperback with tiny pages and tiny font and realized I had no trouble doing so. And that it was nice on the eyes. Flipping to the front, the publisher was kind enough to tell me it was Bembo.
I don't know I like it. I use the Bembo Std I have on my computer for every document. I think maybe I have a problem reading big, blocky letters. Maybe I should mention I have myopia and astigmatism I wear glasses for, and I find in eye test I often say things like 'that could be an E or a G; it's smearing together'. I guess it has just enough simplification and handwritten quality. I can see what italics are saying much more easily than typical and I like the numbers and the visibility of things like commas and lowercase i's. I like to change the font color and it typically remains readable.
One of my friends has dyslexia and she reads any font aloud without tripping all over the place about a third of the time and reads the dyslexic font on my Kindle relatively smoothly after a few minutes to adjust.
Also, I think the word 'Bembo' is aesthetically pleasing, easy to remember, and fun to say. Bembo.
Speaking of my kindle, I would pay for Bembo. Get on it, Amazon!
What font are RUclips comments in?
To answer your month old question, almost the whole of RUclips is in Roboto. One of google's own fonts.
The reason for Helvetica's name was not correct. It was designed by a Swiss typographer in a foundry in Switzerland. The name was changed from 'Neue Haas Grotesk' to 'Helvetica' for international appeal not because Switzerland is more international, but because it is easier to pronounce (less foreign to non-German speakers).
As a graphic design major I totally enjoyed this episode
"i heard people mentioning are names. any idea why?"
"I HAVE NO IDEA BROTHER. BUT THEY HAVEN'T USED IT IN ANGER."
For those of you who are interested, "Arimo" is a very similar font to sans serif - in case you want a substitute.
Helvetica is also called that because it was developed by Swiss people. Also, it probably would've been interesting for people not into typography how Trajan took over the world of movie posters by storm, only to suddenly disappear. Same thing with Gotham appearing everywhere, although it is still quite popular these days.
Gotham is pretty new too. I believe it was designed for GQ magazine in the early 00's so it's not quite outstayed it's welcome yet lol.
Here in Sweden we used to use "Times New Roman" a lot when writing essays. Nowadays it's kinda banned to use it because it's overused, "Calibri" is the new standard for essays it seems.
Isn't it Arial? We use Arial a lot (Arial, 12 to be exact)
Macky Clemen We started out with "Arial" at a very young age but then later on changed to "Times New Roman".
No, please no calibri.
Myriad Pro or GTFO.
I bet you all the money in the world the real reason for this is they're the defaults in Word. Times New Roman was the default for a new document until Word 2007 when they moved to Calibri.
People should really start to learn the difference between a font and a typeface. A font is only in which weight (regular, bold, italic etc) you use the typeface (helvetica, arial, futura etc).
I've always thought this in my mind, but it's great to see a video about it.
a friend of mine went to a media design school, and he said that his class was told that if comic sans was used at all in any of their work or projects that they would automatically fail, no matter the content of project
With SLICK looking graphics *wink* *wink*
eyyy
+wowitsbryce why are you on every video (even cubing)
+posaidon0802 cubers are not subject to having only 1 interest you know...
+John Smith k then
So this is Techquickie right?
I honestly felt like I was on one of those graphic design introduction classes
Please do a episode on Cams, proper cam usage, and the dreaded vertical bars...
Right up ur alley dude =D
This was fun to watch as a graphic designer. But i would say you nailed it pretty well :)
Could you do a Techquickie episode on the basics of video production, mainly filming?
I personally use Open Sans for text in my videos because it's easy to read and I won't have to worry about problems related to using fonts.
A lot of web designers use it too, myself included. Given that it's well designed and has a very permissive license.
Funny that Helvetica is considered 'neutral' because people believe the Swiss are neutral. Historically, the Celtic/Gaulish tribe of the Helvetii were among the more warlike factions in Europe before eventually being conquered by Rome. I totally wiki'd Helvetii after playing Rome 2 Total War and listening to Eluveitie. :D
Luke's skin tone looks really green in this video. Is there something going on with the color balance?
I thought so as well.
+Lucus Levy Keppel Nope, he's just slowly turning into an ogre :P :D
Let's hope it's not exposure to gamma radiation.
My favourite font is "Nevis", quite a cool and clean one.
When I was a little kid, I spent months thinking I was reading books by a certain Grid Blyton.
I am still pretty convinced the man wanted to be ambiguous on purpose
You should definitely make a video about television QAM and what it is/how it works. It would be great for you guys to include some sort of explanation as to how it is used in large business settings like college dorms and apartment buildings as well.
First 6 seconds "Slick looking graphics"
SLICK move there Luke, I see what you did there!
IMO the most beautiful font is Segoe UI. i also really like Calibri, it's just a better version of Arial imo
+Federico Muzzo or hobo std
I like these documentary type videos.
How awesome will it be to have TWO gold play buttons in the LMG Studio? should hit 1,000,000 very soon on this channel! Congratz Guys!
Somebody else had probably already noticed, but the IRS sign and form are not Helvetica as shown in the vid.
Just imagine what if, in 150 years, Comic Sans becomes the most widely used and loved font ever...
Suggestion for a Techquickie/Fast as Possible video: CPU parking and how much it affects performance if at all.
When you go from IDEs like Code::Blocks to Qt or Visual Studio, omg the visual orgasms
As a very little kid I always thought Disney logo actually said "Disnep", and all grown-ups telling me otherwise were either idiots, or just fucking with me
I like how you mention the IRS's use of Helvetica and the sign isn't in Helvetica lol. It's Avenir. The name Helvetica is also as such because it's a Swiss font. Not because it's "neutral" (which it also is, but that isn't the main reason behind the name).
Segoe UI - Electronic
Arial - Documents in paper
True. I always use Segoe UI in my apps.
Segoe UI
Fun fact: Segoe UI is actually a copy of Frutiger Next or Myriad.
Indeed. It's so closely ripped off Microsoft were unable to trademark it or gain any other kind of legal protection for it.
whilst arial is mS ripp off of the helvetica sparing the nice looking r and a
I have a small correction to make:
*Helvetia* is latin for Switzerland
*Helvetica* is latin for Swiss
Other than that, great video!
Helvetica used to be my go-to font before I took my graphic design class. But that made me realize it's just stupidly boring, so now my default choice is Futura. I don't know why but I love it and use it for everything other than projects.
Helvetica is supposed to be boring. It's neutral, it doesn't get in the way of the message or colour your perceptions. At least that's the original intent and how it worked for years until it was used so heavily for corporate branding.
Kudos to Courier, the font family in that the world we know today was made of
I've always thought the Walt Disney font is stolen from Will Eisner's signature.
All these people who say "interesting" or "wow great video". Even though the video has been out for 10 seconds... You do know we all know you haven't watched the video yet and that you just want to be noticed.
If you ask me, I'm a big fan of sans-serif smallcaps typefaces, and even if it's not smallcaps, I at least appreciate it if they were well rounded.
This'll inevitably go into another subject, but why is it that the lowercase "a" in, say, Arial is written with the little hanger hook (as I like to call it), but it's rare for me to see anyone else write the lowercase "a" that way? And since the hanger-hook "a" and the sans-hangerhook "a" are both registered as the same letter, there's gotta be something in our heads that says that it is.
It's easier to distinguish an a with the hook above it in small type than one without. On lower resolution displays back in the day it could be confused with things like o believe it or not because it didn't have the precision to render it on old screens. The way the OS renders fonts also plays a part. Microsoft force things into a grid, so things could be squished up more than they should be or you get the classic example of r n looking like m when next to each other. On the Mac they render as the font file itself tells it to be rendered, trusting the type designer knew what they were doing when considering spacing etc rather than some algorithm. This is one reason designers preferred the Mac for so long. It's not really an issue these days given the software you use has its own type render engine (which is actually the same concept of how the Mac does it), so it'll look the same if made in Photoshop for Windows or OS X for example.
More deep stuff about tech and society would be great for techquickie.
Congratulations on reaching 1 million subscribers! :-)
Luke seems to be a Helvetica fanboy. Usually when people mention popular fonts, they go with Arial or Calibri.
9/10 that's because they have those fonts. Unless you have a Mac you don't get Helvetica by simply owning a computer. Apple license it and it's a default system font that comes with the OS, Microsoft don't, which is why they used Arial instead, to avoid having to pay for a license. Same reason they use Segoe instead of Frutiger which is a blatant rip off of the latter.
Verdana all the way
Serif fonts - Tell difference between "I" (i) & "l" (L)
Sans Serif fonts - no difference between "I" (i) & "l" (L).
This is a problem if your name happens to have a lowercase-L near the start and people mistake it for an uppercase-i even if the letter is repeated later on and they can recognise it there (too many folks have typed my name as "EiN" when it's "eL" yet they recognise "Diablo"/"Devil" just fine -.-;).
Comic Sans is the best font. It is down to Earth with the hard written look.
techquickie is so close to 1 million! :D
I just can't contain my excitement when i see comic sans font.
I feel like I am one of a few people in the world that kinda likes Comic Sans, might be because it reminds me of a simpler time where I wasn't pay $20,000 a year for a degree that I may end up having to go back to school in a few years to make sure I can keep a job in the industry I want to work in and instead where I could be a sweet innocent child with no cares in the world of terror around me and just be blissfully happy most of the time. Damn now I am depressed for being an adult.
I love condensed fonts, like Bebas or Oswald.
lol who else knew comic sans was going to mentioned
Yup.
Yay Sans and Papyrus together in a video!
If you are a Firefly fan, belive me, Papyrus ain't so bad.
Anyway. I found nice and pretty sci-fi square-ish fonts like BankGothic, Xirod, Eurostile, Orbitron, etc.
I used to build InDesign servers, and other proprietary ACE servers. Fonts make me want to dig my brain out with a giant flaming wooden spoon. You want to hate yourself, audit font licenses on ~1000 farms which run UPS/Staples/Office Depot/Office Max/Microsoft Web2Print sites. I'd rather set myself on fire.
When you reach this point, fonts mean nothing, unless it's Comic Sans - then you can go to hell.
This is one reason I was happy to see the inclusion of TypeKit with the CC license. The selection is pretty slim but it covers all the basics and then some.
Using the default fonts (e.g. Calibri) in important documents like resumes or reports can make you look a bit generic or amateurish. Use a different font to stand out and make an impression!
I remembered that scene in American Psycho when Bale's character compares his calling card with other borderline psychos. Its bizarre.
Idk if 4 years ago they had it but you missed the dyslexia fonts, like open dyslexia! They fonts help people with dyslexia as shown in their names lol
Comic Sans looks good on really low-res screens, for which it was designed
This is why I write in comic sans for every single piece of paper for a teacher I 'love'.
I love the Futura font!
Helvetica was my default font on my Arch Linux installation. Now I know why
Congratz on 1.000.000 subs!!
Typefaces! It's typefaces, not fonts.
The hero we need.
They said they'd use "font" for "typeface" for their previous video. Yeah...
What's the difference?
Yeah, I feel ya, But I gave up, It's like "caliber / calibre" vs "cartridge" in firearms if a say an M-16 is a .22 people think I'm nuts....
Typeface = family. Font = style. So Arial is the typeface, Arial Bold is the font.
This pretty much sums up a community college psychology pre rec...
This subconscious suggestion of the font changing our perception of sour is also known as having more sensitive tastebuds because the study didn't even have a large number of people to make the damned research credible.
I can get 5 people now and test two different situations with them and 5 others, it doesn't mean that anything I just did meant anything.
just around 800 subs for 1 million so close at the time of current.
okay you better have been making a low key reference to undertale when you mentioned comic sans and papyrus immediately next to each other.
I love the Ubuntu Fonts a lot, they feel me comfy
HAPPY 1 MILLION MILESTONE!!
What is with the colour of this video?
In our school, English exams, tests, worksheets all use Comic sans, totally over using that font, isn't it?
Man, that Lynda.com sponsor spot really came out of nowhere
