Ryan Anderson debates gay marriage with Piers Morgan

- 26 March 2013 -- Ryan Anderson, 31, of the Heritage Foundation holds his ground debating gay marriage with Piers Morgan on CNN live in front of a liberal audience. Mr Anderson sticks to the facts, remains calm and polite, and wins the day.
This young man in my opinion won the debate.
He is wrong in first sentence. If marriage is about children, then people that can't have children shouldn't be allowed to marry.
Agreed!!!🎉
@@goranmilic442 They are of the nature to beget children only that some circumstances prevent that. It doesn't put into question that man and woman procreate.
@@HendrickAlbina Is marriage about having children or not? Yes or no?
Am I the only one who thought this whole show was a setup to make this man look stupid even though he had some extremely valid points?
Could be that it was a setup... but his points being "valid"? Not really
He mentioned gay couples that do not have the same tax benefits as married couples could be helped by improving tax policy, not redefining marriage. I thought that was an extremely valid point.
George Waters I believe you consider that marriage is the union of a man and a woman. Right? How about men or women that can't reproduce? Can they still get married? If yes, what is the point of marriage? Love and Compromise between to people. So... gay marriage? Why not! Oh yeah... the invisible man in the sky!! That is the real problem!
chicagata I'm not really interested in getting drawn into a gay-marriage debate. My point is more how the show was bias. Piers Morgan should be fed to sharks
George Waters I imagined you have no interest in getting into a debate. Maybe because you have no way to defend your position. It's very christian of you, by the way, to suggest that PM should be fed to sharks.
Ryan showed intellectual brilliance and heroic charity in the midst of a mob of condescension. #respect
Yeah, but he didn't have any good arguments for his position. Just some Christian talking points about marriage.
When Piers coudn't handle Ryan, he turned to the girl for help. And when the lady coudn't handle Ryan, she turned to the audience.🤣🤣🤣

Can You be a Gay Christian? Gay = Happy, right? Can u love God, your family, fellow man, pet animal and be happy -absolutely ! Does that mean some grotesque abominable physical expression of that "love", sorry no! If not God, then nature is telling us such physical contact is dangerous, debilitating and sometimes deadly, should we not listen at least to what nature is telling us? We all have urges we ought not to act on, but anyone can say *"yeh, but I was born that way!"* If deniers say we're just semi-evolved apes and survival is the greatest singular instinct of any creature, then what survival advantage is afforded a species by homosexual relationships? Should not such a gene if it exists, have been bred out over 100s of generations?
Hiding behind a colorful banner that proclaims "love" "commitment", "freedom" etc is a clever ploy but it belays the fact that homosexuality in many studies have shown its a promiscuous, debilitating and soul destroying lifestyle. Ryan Anderson is 31. He displays more emotional maturity than the host and his guest combined.
Ryan is just trying to telling the plain truth of what your mother and father already know.
You should ask your mother and/or father about the birds and the bees my friend.
Lyrics:
Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called 'Love'
Let me tell ya 'bout the stars in the sky
And a girl and a guy
And the way they could kiss
On a night like this
When I look into your big brown eyes
It's so very plain to see
That it's time you learned about the facts of life
Starting from A to Z
Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called 'Love'
(Yeah)
+bradyspace He is obviously religious which would mean he is unlikely to mature above the age of 15. He seems nice but his views are just dumb.
+bradyspace That's because his personal rights aren't being threatened. It's easy to be calm when you personally have nothing to lose.
No, they want super rights. We all have the right to vote and all men and woman have the right to get married. Civil unions and private contracts were free to everyone. Forcing so-called 'gay marriage" will inevitably be an attack on the Church which will never comply just like those bakers.

Religion is manmade. There is NO god that lives in the heavens. That is all created and crafted by primitive mankind.
Props to this guy for handling Piers and Suzi
She lost the debate because she had to ask the crowd how they felt.
I completely agree. Ryan definitely presented himself better, explaining his arguments clearly, not allowing himself to be baited. Piers and Suze were condescending, they appealed to emotions, appealed to the crowd to shout him down, and were generally far less persuasive. Purely in terms of debating style and effectiveness, I think Ryan won the exchange.
Having said that, Ryan's arguments were flawed, he was deliberately evasive on crucial points, and he was there to make a speech, not engage in a conversation. I was not convinced by what he said, and don't agree with his position.
HBJ
HunchbackJack Good to see that even in disagreement, you can see the obvious problems with the supposed arguments mounted against Ryan. He was evasive, but I don't think he avoided the question of whether he opposed gay marriage as overtly as the presenter made it seem. Ryan's argument seemed to be that he agreed with whatever was made constitutional. However, I do get the feeling he had a bias, which he should simply have voiced. It's okay to have an opinion. What you do with that opinion is what counts in my books.
Ryan wants to ask the voters what they want (as long as the polls hold his opinion) What is the diff?
Mexighetti The problem with your point is that you have made an assumption that he only wants what voters want, if they want what he wants. This needs substantiation.
No. Ryan couldn't even say it straight that he was against gay marriage. If u r gonna stand for something, at least stand tall

I'm part of the LGBTQ community. However, I kept my mind clear to really hear what Anderson was saying.
As much as Suze Orman is right about her argument, what Anderson were trying to say is those in the LGBTQ community should be able to form a union, but not call it a marriage.
Since marriage was originally defined as a man and woman joining together, the LGBTQ community should create their own term/version of marriage.
I think Anderson wants to be respected as a union with a woman (marriage) versus along with all the different types of unions put in one category.
Oh well, it's 2019. And marriage is now two adults joining together, after Obama legalized gay/lesbian/etc marriage.

Define what is "factual" and present an argument that moral integrity involves factuality rather than deception.
I'll start:
Leviticus 19:11
You must not act deceptively or lie to one another.
Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.
Romans 1:18-20
The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Johnny Hauser
so when are you going to start with facts, all i see there is religious bs
prove god exists, then you can claim those to be facts
I presented a basis for my worldview in which there are facts and I have a moral obligation to believe them. I'm not convinced by your usage of the word "facts" if your worldview can't account for them nor provide a reason to prefer them over falsehood.

what you presented was your beliefs, and a fictional book, claiming they are facts

How about bring in Muslims who in the Qu'ran are allowed to marry underrage girls why they want to deprive them of their rights?
Or two first cousins who can't help but be madly in love, why they would be so heartless as to object to their happiness?

@@debbieoneal3383 ur proud of homophobic bigots?????
That guy held his composure the lady didnt that speaks volumes, good job sir
I agree with with Ryan Anderson.
I don't, because his arguments can be refuted quite easily.
1) "Marriage" means the union of a man or a woman, by definition
If we agree that gay people should have the same rights as straight people, then we can change the definition of marriage to accommodate them. The meaning of words evolve over time; there's absolutely no reason to use semantics to deny people rights.
2) "Marriage" is an institution to foster the raising of children
If this were a legitimate reason to prevent gay people from the right to marriage, then people who were unable, unwilling, or inept at raising children would also be denied marriage. People who had children who needed caring for would be prevented from getting divorced.
This also assumes (although it's never stated) that any gay couple couldn't possibly be as nurturing to children as any straight couple - regardless of how loving the gay parents are or how abusive the straight parents.
3) "People should vote on this issue"
Actually, no. This is a human rights issue. Just as the Federal Government wouldn't permit any city, county or state to outlaw mixed-race marriages, so we shouldn't make the right to marriage a matter of local opinion. It is entirely appropriate that the Supreme Court rule on this issue.
HBJ
HunchbackJack Dude, I think he is simply trying to explain how he defines marriage. Like he said early on, he isn't against it. He simply views marriage as the union between man and woman so that a child can be raised and be taken cared for. He says that the issue is how people define marriage.
That is why he implied "people should vote on this issue". It is not on whether there should be gay marriage or not, but people (as a society) should agree on how marriage should be defined.
Sorry, not try to argue with you but I just think you misunderstood on what he was saying.
Mau Mauster I think Ryan is playing a shell game with words. He is implying that gay people shouldn't get married *because* marriage is between a man and a woman, by definition. He doesn't come out and say that, but the inference is clear, and understood by anyone who agrees with him.
The reason the word is so important to Christians is because they consider marriage to be an act of God, not of man. "What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate", etc. So they don't want the institution of marriage "sullied" by something they consider offensive to God.
But Christians like Ryan don't say that, because religious belief alone isn't a valid justification for denying people equal rights under the law. So he tries to pass it off as a question of semantics rather than a matter of human rights.
HBJ
To my Black and Colored Brothers;
"By law and official policy Gays have not been segregated in Schools, buses, restaurants, housing, voting rights etc.
Gays have been victims of individual attackers who are punishable for their crimes against gays.
Offenses against blacks were authorized by state action, state laws, and official policy.
It's very misleading to compare Gay rights to Civil Rights of black people.
The point is that Gays are already enjoying Government Protection through Laws that punishes those who attack gays.
On the other hand, back in the days the Government and the Laws were not protecting Blacks, but in fact such law and government actions became the basis for discriminating blacks.
So the LGBT's attempt at elevating the status of Gay causes to that of the Blacks civil rights causes is a dishonest and unethical tactic."
Any Black Person who support LGBT agenda of insulting blacks by equating Gay causes to black causes (Gay is the new black) is a BIG TRAITOR.
Ollie X He's referring to America. This is a travesty of justice, but it is irrelevant to his point.
***** So just because it happens in another part of the world it is irrelevant? Well I'm from UK so all the travesties of justice against blacks that happened in USA are irrelevant.
I think the biggest irony here is how it is mostly black countries (who have experiences awful abuses of human rights I'm not debating that) are the ones which are the most intolerant to others' rights.
Ollie X The video is talking about current policy in the US. It's irrelevant to his point - his point being policy in the US. Keep up!
Ollie X When the discussion is framed around US policy...yes, discussion about ills in other parts of the world is tangential.
***** , KC Burns Maybe, however OPs comment was a general critique of the comparison 'Any Black Person who support LGBT agenda of insulting blacks by equating Gay causes to black causes (Gay is the new black) is a BIG TRAITOR'. Although segregation happened 60 odd years ago how is something more than half of a century old more influential on current social issues and policies than discrimination happening now just in other countries? USA isn't a bubble, foreign affairs do affect it's policies.
The whole purpose of comparing homosexuality and race in terms of equality is to highlight how discrimination has manifested itself beforehand and how similar the justifications of these views are. Undermining it by saying 'who had it worse' trivialises equal rights as some stupid competition and whoever had the hardest time should be more entitled to equal rights than those who didn't.
“Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it.”
― Leo Tolstoy, A Confession
Salnsd : God decided what is wrong
@Salnsd when was the last time you read it anyway. That is always the line of argument. From who decides right and wrong then you jump to which God then you jump to genocide. You forget that God dealt with the Israelutes the same way he dealt with any other nation when they sinned. I guess you have not even read Exodus to know that all that generation that left Egypt didn't make it to the promised land because of their sin of idolatry, murmuring etc just as the other nations did. And then you have never read that through one nation He was trying to bring a fallen race to a restored position of glory in the fulness of time. I wonder if 2 men or two women gave birth to you to support such an aberration of same sex marriage. There are irreducible minimum and it is a shame we all as a generation is eroding standards and can't even tell what is wrong and right. I am a biologists and even in all lower animals and plants the nature of order is Male female complementarity else you would not even be enjoying the trees and other pets we have
Salnsd That’s not nice, or tolerant. Also, where in the Bible does God condone all that stuff? The traditional interpretation is that He permitted that stuff at the time because of the moral decadence of the people but fully revealed Himself in Christ. Those Christian values ultimately lead to slavery being outlawed. Why is slavery wrong? You can’t make a coherent argument unless you believe in objective morality, a moral law. A moral law supposes that there’s a moral lawgiver, traditionally known as God. You can’t argue that slavery or all that other stuff is wrong without invoking God. The only other options are relative gibberish that make no logical sense
Notice how he keep cutting him off when he says citizens should have voted on the decision to make marriage legal in all states.
yeah, maybe because it will be evident that the majority would vote "NO to same sex marriage".

So from my observation:
Ryan: Answered with reason logical and understanding
Everyone else: Emotion!
*****
The reason why it is vital to understand that the word can't be changed is based on the principle that other things can be changed.
I saw that pedophiles are now trying to justify their relations straight after gay "marriage" became an acceptance. This is why there has to be a level of prudence from principle and not emotion.
*****
No if you notice carefully, I am talking about the principle. I don't have to use pedophiles, I was using that as an example because I have actually seen in articles that they are attempting to justify their claims. Search on google: pedophiles equal rights
I'll use another example. There are now some wanting to have a 3 way marriage. The principle I'm bringing across is that once the root is removed, the principle, then everything comes down....fast.
Things can be an issue for debate but if the definition of marriage has already been established and now is in aim for change, my point is what grounds do we have to not allow everything else to be changed.
*****
But again I think the context is different. Are we talking about rights or definition?
The definition of marry is under the context of man and woman. Man and man, woman and woman can not fit under that category of marriage. I believe civil partnership is more to the point of definition.
Excellent point Jonathan and that's how they went off of emotion
Jonathan Gardner I am really sorry to inform you that your statements are incorrect.
1.- "Marriage has always been since the beginning of time between man and woman" . The union between 2 people goes way beyond the modern era so we don't have evidence that it has always been between man and woman. It wasn't until 1563 that the sacramental nature of marriage was written into canon law, it was in the 8th century when the catholic church gained power and the sacrament of marriage was stablished, as a matter of fact, polygamy was common throughout history, Jacob, Salomon, Abraham, king David had more than one wife.
2.- "The result of marriage produces life ". Although this statement is true, the purpose of marriage was not always to produce life, early marriage was seen as a strategic alliance between families, with the youngsters having no saying in the matter, sometimes, parents married one child to the spirit of a deceased child to strengthen the bonds between the 2 families. In other cases, the purpose of marriage was to keep strong alliances within the family, it has been documented that the majority of all marriages throughout history were between first and second cousins without their consent.
3.- "the PRINCIPLE can be used for those who are pedophiles because of the same mental condition. And this is why today they want their equal rights too." You can not compare pedophiles marriage with gay marriage, apples and oranges, gay marriage can not open the door to pedophiles to get marry since kids are not and never will be consenting adults.

As for your post hoc rationalization for why "every great City or dynasty that has ever been" collapsed, your assessment is completely devoid of historical evidence. In most cases, the "collapse" of those polities was due to invasion or ethnic division, not disease. In fact, there are multiple societies with historical and literary references to homosexuality going back centuries that are still very much extant and thriving (China, Britain, and Persia/Iran to name a few).
@@samiramarley I'm not trying to throw the who's smarter guy up but I have a master's in ancient history.
Scientists proved that Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by some type of fiery disaster after doing soil samples. And secondly the cities that I named that I said had failed due to homosexuality and disease is fact. Some of them were conquered and the reason they were conquered is because they were so deleted of economics and military mostly. Greece, Rome and Sparta ran rampet with disease due to sexual immorality. Alexander the great said "For if we succumb to the desires of our flesh we will surely fall" speaking at a trial against the senators and governor's concerning what he called boy lovers. Rome was overrun by pedophiles and Sparta was known for taking and taking the children of the lower class. The Ming dynasty almost died out in 1607 due to a disease that to this day has only been seen in China and after the Ming dynasty fell in 1644 and they ran the rest of the Ming people into the north of China the disease almost left overnight. And there are scrolls in China today that speak of the downfall of the Ming dynasty sure to lesbians. It was forbidden for men to lay together but not women. Syria and Persia were defeated and divided. They did not succumb to sexual immorality. The USA never got into the state that it's in today until we started acknowledging gays and lesbians in the transgender community and ever since Obama signed the bill for gay marriage and put a rainbow on the front of the White House this country has gotten worse ten times over. People today in America don't fear anything and that's scary.

This 31 year old man is one of the bravest and smartest people defending the institution of marriage. Susie and Piers had to resource to emotions because they realised they could not win based on facts. This guy tore them up!
Do you not resource to emotions when deciding if you love someone? Do you not resource emotions when making financial decisions? Do you not resource emotions when you decide that killing, stealing, or rape is wrong? Obviously you do, as its part of being human. You know what's also part of being human? Being embarrassed and dishonest with ourselves about our emotions and how we feel, because of other emotions like fear.
Emotions and Rationality are BOTH part of what make us human beings.
Changing laws can not be based only on emotions. We have to take social science into consideration. Marriage is not just about "love", it is also about creating the building blocks of society and to secure the propagation of the human species. I believe in treating everyone with respect regardless of sexual orientation, but I don't think that we need to redefine marriage in order to do so.

Stand your ground Ryan.
The hell was that? I actually wanted to hear the man's point, they kept interrupting.
because it was pointless and completely went against separation of church and state which is what this country has been for over many many years
When did this become a separation of church and state issue? As pointed out by Dr. Anderson, all of civilization (regardless of religion) recognized marriage as a union of man and woman before the year 2000. It is much more to do with common sense and biology.
Same-sex marriage has existed throughout history, there's plenty of evidence that shows this. Google "Same-Sex Marriage and the Construction of Family: An Historical Perspective" and read the first PDF, written by Richard Ante, for a brief look at the historical evidence.
Regardless of the historical or religious legitimacy of marriage, the moment marriage became part of law, it was separated from religion and made entirely civil. America was founded on the principles of separation of church and state, the term was coined by Thomas Jefferson himself. The First Amendment of the Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Marriage is a legal institution in American civil law, as such any religious definitions or connotations are rendered irrelevant. From a historical and social perspective, same-sex marriage has always existed. From an ethical and moral perspective, marriage equality for all and free access to marriage for all American citizens, should be a reality.
Stop bringing up religion. This has NOTHING to do with religion. One does not have to be a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Hindu, etc...to know that the marriage institution is just a reflection of human biology. Only through the sexual complimentary bond of male and female can a life be created. Marriage, regardless of any obscure propaganda you can find, represents the brick of society : the foundation of the family unit.
What is wrong by simply recognizing this fact of uniqueness and then building an institution that promotes this type of engagement for the betterment of society? What does two men shacking up have to do with bringing forth the next generation, and why in the world would the government care to get involved? If marriage is only about love and has nothing to do with children, then as Dr. Anderson says, why not make the throuple qualify for marriage? Why not let the Mormon's practice polygamy legally? What principle allows for same-sex marriage but denies other arrangements from being legally recognized, apart from sheer bias? Once you take something and distort the definition, it opens the door for all kinds of lunacy. So many questions arise from same-sex marriage, one needs to be extremely short-sighted not to recognize the consequences.
Look at a dictionary before the year 2000 and you will see that marriage by definition is the union of male and female. So based on the inception and understanding of what marriage actually is, there was NO inequality against the gay community. All gays were permitted to marry, but...they simply were not looking for marriage. Asking why two men should not allow to marry is like asking someone why they cannot draw a four sided triangle. Meaningless question.
Ethics and morals? I find it unethical that the LGBT community think they can bully society into altering the meaning of marriage and have business owners, who object based on conscience, be forced into providing services that participate in (by their judgment) immoral ceremonies.
"access to marriage for all American citizens, should be a reality."
You mean all American citizens should be able to decide for themselves what marriage means, and then force the government into legalizing it. To me marriage is just the bond between two people in a living arrangement. I want to marry my sister. Please grant me my "equality". Dumb.
Google "man marries dog in India". Let's let people marry their pets...
