Pretending they don't know what the cause of the odor is must be hard.
Its genuinely hilarious how far people are willing to ignore reality.

People are defecating in the streets and parks due to lack of housing and facilities. During a heat wave that is absolutely what it smells like. Ive traveled and seen the same thing down in poor areas in other countries as well
Skytrain smells like poop and pee most of the time, and stations in downtown area smells like poop and pee too. Saw pee in the elevators all the time during the winter.

A lot of Vancouver smells like a toilet. I think they should probably stop the homeless from using our streets as their personal bathroom.
Stop. Underground subways are notorious for this problem. We weren't meant to live like bugs..
Or maybe they could encourage building more property to lower the demand and give the homeless basic shelters.

This. I’ve stopped going downtown, everywhere smells like piss and no one is doing anything about it.
If these problems are to get fixed it will be up to white Canadians or maybe asians like south korean Canadians to fix. Others like Indian people cant even fix issues like a bad stench in their own stomping grounds in India. Unlikely they’ll much be much help here.

In response to increased complaints of foul odors at SkyTrain stations in the Metro Vancouver area, a formal air quality study was conducted under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Canada. This study took place in May 2024 and involved air sampling across three major routes: Waterfront Station to King George Station, Waterfront Station to Braid Station, and Waterfront Station to Production Way-University Station. Air probes were systematically collected and analyzed to determine the levels of various compounds. The focus was detecting fat-soluble oils and inorganic salts, specifically sodium, chloride, and potassium, indicating human perspiration. The study revealed significantly elevated levels of these compounds along the Waterfront Station to King George Station route. The concentrations of fat-soluble oils and the specified salts were 374% higher on this route than on the other routes tested.

@@agewilson -- Right, yet they checked that too. They said they can't pinpoint the smell, so it is not structural. Sewer leakage would be the first place a city would check for smells.
I don't think it's that kind of smell. They're describing sewage, maybe natural gas, or decomposing flesh.
I went to Metrotown last week, it was a true assault to the senses. I couldn’t even use a change room; the odour was so bad they had to call in back up to get ride of it. The entire place smelled like a giant armpit.
Marlboros, old beer, onion and ass
My mother in law came to visit us in Vancouver (I live in the lower mainland). When I took her downtown by foot, after crossing the bridge on Granville side, we immediately got hit by the smell of piss, and I felt a bit ashamed that she had to see how the streets were filled with drug addicts acting anything but normal.

This is why Taipei's, Singapore's and Tokyo's ones are the best.. they find out about this and will be solved fast. Every time we go back to Taipei, that line handles millions PER day and yet no escalators are down.. either we have very bad trades or management getting kickbacks
Just one more reason to not go downtown. This city has gone down the toilet, how can anyone say things are better?

Now watch one of the original liberal rallies from 2015 with Trudeau and you’ll see everything he said he was bullcrap. All Trudeau had to do was say some kind of wishy washy things like “womens issues are everyone issues” and then get applause. Meanwhile womens issues have only gotten worse since then. Many women since then are now reaching middle age and still unmarried and growing very unhappy. The culture failed them. Lol

There's no way that lingers for 4 months and the smell is "on and off". This is something else. Likely sewage.
Between Burrard Station and Waterfront Station, there is a section underground beside the tracks that has graffiti and trash littered. It looks like nobody has cleaned up the section for years. For some reason, I assume it was left over from the 2011 Canucks riot. When commuting from Waterfront station to Burrard, look out on the right side facing the front of the train and you will see the mess.

I'd say it's most likely the old tunnel smell since that tunnel has existed since the '80s let alone the part that used to be used by freight trains which has been around since God knows how long
Check out the Vancouver Book for the History of the Canada line tunnel ? It older than your mom !
see my response. You are most likely spot on. good potential for sulfides in the tunnel but hopefully not related to volcanism. There are fault lines everywhere under the city.
Probably a sewer leak from a cracked pipe that is leaking into the vent system. Could be hard to find unless they run a remote controlled camera trolly through it.
i can smell piss in most lrt train stations both inside and outside in calgary

I noticed the smell when i went to the store the other day, my apartment is perfumed.

Olympic village had a sewage pipe burst and all of downtown including where I live in west end stunk like poop this past weekend I had to sleep in heat with my windows closed when I needed them open to cool my suite...also whenever I'm on the granville bus 14 down granville it stinks on granville as well as around Clark drive....also every time I get on akytrain at stadium and head to surrey the whole skytrain stinks bad....something is wrong with the sewage pipes in our city
That tunnel must be the large colon of Vancouver, the ass is City Hall.😂
I wonder how many people secretly live in those tunnels.
Going too left is good. It also smells good?
That stench is particularly bad in Burrard but it's not unique to the SkyTrain - exact same smell in one particular station in Hong Kong apparently caused by an old leaky sewer in the area which seeps through the micro cracks of the rock...
Could it be our diverse population and migrant workers?
That’s exactly what it is
Nobody complained because it’s normal in india
I was at Waterfront a few days ago after I finished hanging out with a friend and the Expo Line SkyTrain platform smelled like f****** human shit. I’m telling you, the Expo Line underground stations are only smelling worse because of the nearby septic and sewage system.
I was a carpet cleaner a long time ago and we used to do the Mr Mikes steakhouse on Granville st and i can tell you it smelled like a sewer at the best times so having a sewer smell is nothing new.
I swear it is always around Burrard and Granville station. I travel to Vancouver everyday for work.
This has been going on for a long time, I usually smell it here and there on my way to and from work. Couple that with rising temperatures, and a heat wave this week? It's gonna smell real bad.
I'm honestly more surprised at the fact the news is covering it
Isn't there sewer main work going on near Burrard Station right now?
Not the sky train smells like several asses 😂
As bad as it is, at least it isn't the "funk" that permeates the Montreal Metro.... That smell tracks onto their busses in the winter too. It even survived a cross- country trip when their busses were shipped to Victoria to cover the busses loaned to Translink for the 2010 Olympics.
The last time I took the subway in Montreal was in the early 90’s until I got my first car. I remember it sometimes smelled of rotten eggs. I’ll bet that was more pleasant than what it smells like now, with all the homeless people living down there.
Did Freeland pay Burrard station a visit?
I have smelled that putrid odour for multiple years, trust me it's not just been an issue for a few months
Years ago, one skytrain attendant told me he knew what it was, but I forgot what he said.
The funk will be quite prominent in the Summer and permeate all of downtown core. Mark my words.
I think some people just need shower, on the other day, I was taking the skytrain from marine dr to oakridge, there was this guy smells like piss, and he is not even homeless, he actually got branded clothes and using a new iPhone, and on my way back, there was this guy, in suit, look like a professional office worker, smells like alcohol mixed with old gym bag. And then there was a guy carrying a big bags of take out. It smells nice at first, but after a few mins, I started to feel disgusted.
Didn't I hear that there was a rat problem?
Toronto's SRT had a bad smell at Midland Station. It was due to the cardboard recycling plant and Atlantic Packaging. It was pure farts lol
On a different note, there's been an influx of international students from India recently eh?
I wonder whats underground there?
It often happens before Huge Earthquakes like in Japan. I smelled some pretty nasty smells then bam its just all over and in Vancouver no one is prepared. At least in Tokyo they have the Oedo Line which is the deepest train line used in cases of emergency. Also the tunnels as well. Lets pray thats not he case. It would take a long long long time to get vancouver functioning again.
Don't want to take your words 🤞
wow, the comments section on this sure is something.
Well you have a point given the swarm off the coast.
Have they checked for a stuck dead something under a train
Over a million people living in the area and no one reported the issue to the city and the city hasn't even started investigating. Oh that's definitely the Canadian way. We are useless.
Hopefully its not a volcano becoming active somewhere
Did they find the cause of the bad smell yet?
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
That's not true that this smell has only been there for a couple of months. It's been there for years in the underground portions of the Expo Line, and the trains keep smelling all the way to Main Station or even Commercial.
To those who say it's the smell of homeless people, no it's not. Many homeless people smell strongly, but this is an entirely different smell. Walking around the Broadway digging operations for the Skytrain line extension, I occasionally get whiffs of that same smell, a bit like sewers on a hot day. If there aren't leaking sewer lines down there, maybe it's the ground itself that smells like that? Is it possible that the deeper soil has a high concentration of sulfur or something alike?
If you are smelling it. It’s inside your body now 🤢
When it smells so bad you can taste it, thats because you are in fact tasting it. 😝
Guys stahp 😆
When it grows on you inside it’s a tumor. Outwardly, it’s fungus like stain that’s dispersed with someone’s sprayer. Once the fungus flakes start flying - it’s over
It’s like that Smelly Car Seinfeld episode. Whoever goes in those trains will never get rid of the smell, it has attached to them forever. 😝
They don’t regularly clean the stations either. Granville is disgusting now

Let's ignore the MetroVancouver sewage pipe leak and blame minorities that are easy to scapegoat.
@ruslbicycle6006 the pipes downtown don't make Coquitlam trains stink. If you can't smell it or even acknowledge who is causing it there is a good chance you are stinking yourself.
This isn't some stereotype based in ignorance.
Its people's lived and smelled experiences.
We know how trains used to smell...we know how they smell now... we can visually see what has changed.
It's really not hard to comprehend
@@walkman6150 Wow, that's some long winded excuse for xenophobic nonsense. "Acknowledge who is causing it" is such a disgusting statement my nose is recoiling right through the laptop screen.
Who is causing it is you and me. Because we are distracted by online hate BS written for us by algorithms who care not what is written, just that it gets clicks. So then we don't hold the government to account in a reasonable way. Instead of getting the decisions made that will fund proper train cleaning, proper maintenance, the bureaucrats can point to xenophobic comments like yours and dismiss the whole thing as just "normal" and not actually fix the problem.
The hateful comments make the workers depressed so the really excellent workers quit and only the type who does the bare minimum sticks around.

Exactly the clue words were rotten eggs.
There is a very distinctive and unpleasant pong to hydraulic fluid. It's something like skunk plus armpits plus something vaguely chemical. The skunky quality suggests reduced sulphur. This can be spectroscopically tested, but you have to be looking for it.
I think that I must have first smelt it on the Montreal metro in 1974, but I didn't know what it was until working on a shaft-drive motorcycle a decade later. Once you've identified it, it's unmistakable.
I'm not declaring that this necessarily is what people are detecting on the Vancouver lines, but this hot weather is exactly when you should expect it to show up, if that's what it is. And vague speculations aren't plausible alternatives just because someone can wildly imagine something else. Try to approach this scientifically, people!
